I know Durban already has the infrastructure to support the event. I just wanna know what event goes where. And if there will be facilites to be built in the future.

Here are the list of Summer Olympic Sports
•Archery
•Athletics
•Badminton
•Basketball
•Boxing
•Canoeing
•Cycling
•Diving
•Equestrian
•Fencing
•Field Hockey
•Football (Soccer)
•Gymnastics
•Handball
•Judo
•Modern Pentathlon
•Rowing
•Sailing
•Shooting
•Swimming
•Synchronized Swimming
•Table Tennis
•Taekwondo
•Tennis
•Triathlon
•Volleyball
•Water Polo
•Weightlifting
•Wrestling

I understand Moses Mabhida Stadium will host many events but which ones specifically? (the non obvious ones) And just other places where the events will (probably) be held.

Also (for fun not offically) they should have a ski competition at Tiffindell since it will be SA's winter.

I also understand that multiple South African cities have expressed interest in hosting the 2020 Olympics but this is specifically for Durban as it is South Africa's sports hub. I think South Africa has a good chance at winning due to the success of the World Cup and the fact that the Olympics have never been held in Africa.

This is a total thumbsuck which I'm sure someone more in the know will correct.

•Archery - Next to Kings Park Athletics Stadium (not sure what the range is called)
•Athletics - Moses Mabhida / Kings Park
•Badminton - UKZN (Westville Campus)
•Basketball UKZN (I think the sports centre on Francois? Rd can do that)
•Boxing - ICC Arena
•Canoeing - We'll have to build a course
•Cycling - Cyril Geosomething Stadium next to Kings Park
•Diving - Kings Park Pool
•Equestrian - Shongweni?
•Fencing - UKZN Westville
•Field Hockey - There's an astro in Westville and prob others around
•Football (Soccer) - Mr Price / ABSA/ Kings Park Stadium
•Gymnastics - ICC
•Handball - For the life of me I don't even know what this is
•Judo - UKZN
•Modern Pentathlon - Moses Mabhida
•Rowing - Umgeni River / Inanda / Shongweni
•Sailing - In the sea I'd assume
•Shooting - Next to the archery place (although it's not difficult to find a place for it)
•Swimming - Kings Park Pool
•Synchronized Swimming - Kings Park Pool
•Table Tennis - UKZN Campus somewhere
•Taekwondo - Wherever they do Judo
•Tennis - Westridge Stadium
•Triathlon - Suncoast
•Volleyball - Beach?
•Water Polo - If Kings Park Pool is overutilized, there's a bunch of other pools
•Weightlifting - ICC
•Wrestling - ICC

I think we need to see if the city is going ahead with its proposed indoor high performance centre (at the Stables Fleamarket site) to do proper venue allocations as I am sure some events will be proposed to be hosted there in the event that Durbs bids.

That said, in relation to the above 2 sports, while I personally think Inanda Dam would make a specularly scenic venue, it seems (and makes sense that) the city wants a compact Olympic bid and will likely focus either or both the above sports in the Umngeni River / Blue Lagoon area....

Umngeni River Green Hub Opens
14 February, 2011
THEMBA KHUMALO

DEPUTY Mayor Logie Naidoo has urged Durban residents to spread the word about the new Green Hub on the banks of the uMngeni River at Blue Lagoon. Speaking at the official opening of the facility, Naidoo said, “We expect this place to be the centre of attraction during this year’s UN climate change conference.” He said the uMngeni estuary was one of the most important bio-diversity assets in the eThekwini Municipal Area, as it was one of the few remaining estuarine habitats on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

“The estuary is surrounded by unique riverfront parkland and is the only place in the city where people can experience the combination of the beach, estuary and river, with all their associated activities and offerings, in a setting that protects and preserves the crucial biodiversity of the area,” Naidoo said. Project Manager, Sustainable Development, Gary Cullen said one of the Municipality’s goals was to position the uMngeni Valley for Olympic water sports in support of Durban’s possible bid for the games. The aim was to portray Durban as a beautiful, lifestyles city working to preserve its natural environment, roll back poverty and achieve social harmony and local economic development “We want to transform the uMngeni Valley into an iconic leisure zone for adventure sport, nature-based recreation and cultural and ecotourism.

Adventure

“The core concept is a network of multi-use trails and adventure activity nodes linking the beachfront and sports precinct with the estuary, along the valley up to the eThekwini boundary and, ultimately, through to the Drakensberg,” Cullen said. City Manager Michael Sutcliffe said the Green Hub was one of the City’s many world Cup Legacy projects. “We were the only city ever to hold a carbon neutral event. This place is going to do a lot in promoting eco-tourism,” Sutcliffe said. The R4-million building was designed by the Municipality’s architecture department. It gets its power from solar panels, harnesses rainwater and uses low-energy lights. Breezeblocks under the building allow for cool air to enter the building. It is open every day from 8am to 4pm.

•Handball - For the life of me I don't even know what this is

It's a bit like basketball, but with a small football- (soccer-) style goal instead of a basket.

(sorry, commentay is in German)

As for venue, whereever the basketball is held could double as the handball venue.

I am very sure Durban, and any city in Africa, would have a limited number of facilities for a Summer Olympics.

As would most cities in the developed world. VERY few cities have the facilities ready and waiting just look at how much China built for 2008 and london are building for 2012...heck even Sydney did.
