View Full Version : Make this forum more international?

Well, in the thread (Korean forum was so silent), some people suggested to give a more international life to this forum. So, after the post of "little round fort" (Singidunum or something like this. I slept too much in my latin class to find the exact word by mind) on Serbia.

I think people from foreign countries should show more faces of their country.

So let's begin with..... France (surprise). Since (assuming there is still someone here that hasn't noticed it) I live (and was born) in the southern France.

The history of the tricolore flag is to be linked to the revolution. The red and blue are the colors of Paris. And white is the color of the kings. You can see the image of Paris encircling the king.
http://www.french-at-a-touch.com/Graphics_F/French%20Flag.jpg

Ok, so when you ask someone what he has in mind about France, what does he first think about? Paris..... but does France has something else to offer than Paris, well what does he think apart of this? Eiffel, wine, cheese eating surrendering monkeys..... ok none of those are landmarks or architecture.

Sadly, outside Paris, France isn't that known. Worse, when one says "Notre Dame" people only think of the cathedral of Paris. While tons of churchs in France are named Notre Dame (and the one of Paris is certainly not the most beautyfull, far from that).

A lot of churchs are gothics (of course, considering France has the oldest and first gothic churchs). Some Romanesque churchs and Byzantine ones too. Where are the Baroque churchs in this, France is supposed to be a catholic country, why is there nothing Baroque? Well there are no full Baroque church in France, but sometimes you'll see some details in some churchs bu rarely. Most French Baroque stuffs aren't present in churchs but in other buildings.

I usualy give the name of the city where you'll find it, but if I don't, it's you have it in the name (Notre Dame de Chartres, is in..... Chartres)

You'll notice that in French, Chateau doesn't exactly match castle, and palace doesn't exactly match palais. We use different definitions.

Anyway, let's begin, pictures borrowed on the net. But I also link the websites with.

I'll do it civilizations by civilizations. Because France isn't an homogenous country. There are several civilizations inside it (and I'm not talking about ethinicity because it could be divided even inside it). The fix the civilization, language are the main criteria I'll follow. Those do not match kingdoms either.

http://www.tlfq.ulaval.ca/axl/europe/images/France-aires-lng.jpg

Ok, first:
France

It is the one that absorbed the others. It's also the biggest and most powerfull. It has the most interesting architecture but is rather poor about landscapes. It should be bigger and include Wallonia in Belgium to be complete. Among with the Channel Islands.

http://www.worldstatesmen.org/fr-ilefr.gif

Since it has no real symbol outisde the French flag, the flag of Ile de France is the most appropriate. It's 3 Fleurs de Lys. Symbol that has been took back from the crusades. It means prosperity. The language is the French and the cultural capital is Paris.

So let's begin with Paris and its surrounding.

The Chateau de Versailles, the palace that cause this biggest palace war in Europe and kept the status of most impressive palace. The modern view say that it absorved 25% of the state income just to maintain it. And France was the wealthiest country of Europe (it was our golden age).

Notre Dame de Chartres (Cathedral): was a very innovative church and introduced new way of building. That has been used in many gothic churchs since. It was a monster in size when they made it. 115m tall and very big for a church built in 1260.

Saint Pierre in Beauvais, was a mad dream. They wanted to make the world tallest church (and made it but for a short time), the roof nearly is 50m above the gound (world tallest choir), in the end it nearly uses only glass to maintain the stone, because with a stone suspension it would collapse. The bell tower reached nearly 170m but collapsed very soon getting for a short time the title of world tallest structure. Leaving an uncomplete church.

Notre Dame de Rouen, in Normandy, this one was originaly quiet old, but it was modified several time. The last one in the 19th century, raised it at 153m and taking the world tallest title to Saint Nicolas, to lose it one year later to Cologne. It is here that Richard Lionheart, Norman king of England, is buried. As Rouen was his prefered city.

The 2nd biggest civilization of France is Occitania. It's rather large and is the only one having access to both the mediteranean sea and the atlantic ocean. It also has a large part of mountains. Occitania is the opposite of France, it poorer architecturaly talking (still it has things to offer) but older. In the other hand, the landscapes are fabulous, to say the least.

http://jf.blanc.free.fr/oc.gif
The official flag of Occitania, and still used, is the one of Languedoc and is used for the whole Occitania. The cross is an old symbol and the 12 point show the 12 zodiak symbols. Yet, in the middle ages, the cleric seen the 12 apostles in it. Wich is wrong. The origin of the symbol itself are lost in history.
To be complete Occitania should the Valle de Aran in Spain, the very northwest Italy and Monaco.
The language is Occitan (wich sounds like an old form of Catalan) and the cultural capital is Toulouse.

So here is the Languedoc.

The main city is Toulouse:
Saint Sernin (Basilica), in Toulouse, is the biggest pure Romanesque church. Built in the 10th or 11th century (can't remember). That's my city :D, the bell tower remind me a lot of the Ensemble Conventuel des Jacobins (same city), I should say the opposite considering Saint Sernin is older.

The cathars' castles are often impressive especially considering where they are built. Yet they didn't survived history and most of them were destroyed during the Albigensian crusade. But they protected the southwest France of nearly quiet a lot of centuries of continuous war with the muslims from Spain.

Here is the Château de Montaigne. This is where Montaigne was born and was raised. Because he went to his exodus in southern europe to discover himself. And created the essay who became a style in itself. The castle was burned in a fire and only the tower and the library survived sadly. Written on the wall: "Le bout du savoir pour l'homme est de considérer comme bon ce qui arrive et pour le reste d'être sans souci" (in Occitan of course). I agree that about architecture only, it's not such a monument. But still interesting.

Brittany is the last celtic part of France. At least the last one that kept a real celtic identity. Their language is the Breton and the cultural capital should be Rennes (not sure about this).

Corsica Various pictures, the whole island is crazy beautyfull. It was ruled by Genoa when France bought it to Genoa.
http://www.vdiest.nl/images/Europa/France/fr-corse.gif
There are several stories about the origin of this flag. One says it came from the muslims invasions of Europe. The Vandals who lived on the island had for tradition to behead their ennemies. And when the Moors invaded Spain and attacked France, they also attacked the islands like Corsica. And the Vandals defeated them and place their head on spikes, on the coasts to put terror in the mind of the muslims. And so, it's a story among others.

Euskal Herria, is divided between France and Spain. It's the homeland of the oldest civilization of Europe. Yet, the genetic analysis showed the western Occitania and the Euskal Herria were the same ethinicity (that's why I say I talk about civilization and not ethinicities). The origin of those two peoples are still unknown. The language of Euskal Herria is Euskara. Wich isn't an indo european language and has no connection to any other language, at least none confirmed. The cultural capital of the French side is Bayonne.

Flanders was a bilingual country, Flemish and French. So the two languages are represented in the history of the French flanders. The capital should be Lille for the French side. But it always been a French speaking city and is now more bound to France than Flanders even culturaly.

Famous French generals, sometime heros and soldiers in pictures. Without comments. Most of those are artistic view by famous artists and aren't even close to the reality (William the Conqueror, for insistance, is wearing an armor invented centuries after his death).

I have a question: why is the region surronding Paris called Ile de France? I'm pretty sure it's not on an island..

Matthieu
September 18th, 2004, 07:15 PM
Well, there are many explication. The one I trust is Paris was originaly made on an island by the Parisii (people of the river) on the island where you can find now the cathedral Notre Dame. And the land named ile de France, match the land one of the son of Clovis got.

As you know Clovis was of the merovigian dynasty (and only king of this one that is really famous) wich considered land and its people as a property. And divided it between sons ect.... until Charles Martel, mayor of the palace, defeated the merovigians kings (who were quiet a lot) and placed the Carolingian dynasty. One of Clovis son got Paris, wich is the one that absorbed all the others. As it was the capital chosed by Clovis for the Frankish empire.

Charles Martel wasn't a king, yet he is buried with them in Saint Denis.
