Looks like a very clean, organized, and modernized city.
I wish I could visit it someday.

Is Malaysia going to move their national capital there?
or it will only be the admintrative captital?
I know it's very close to KL, what is the distance between the 2 cities?

^

Is that traffic???

Nope....that's not traffic. That is when the regular parking is full and the public uses the huge roundabout surrounding Putra Square as temp parking. There are usually a surge of people visiting the place (like in the picture) every Friday afternoon for Friday prayers and when there's an occasion/festivities in that area ;)

When the Putrajaya Monorail starts operations (probably in a couple of years time/when there's demand for it), that entire area would be closed for this temp parking (only opened to moving traffic) as the monorail would be passing thru Putra Square (underground). :)

Nope.....Malaysia's capital would still be KL as the parliament, the King's Palace, Army HQ and Police HQ are all still in KL. Putrajaya is like the 'protocol city' for visiting dignitaries (so that the motorcades wouldn't choked up KL's main road) and the seat for most of the governmental offices. :)

It is so close to KL that as of last year.....both cities have basically joined thanks to KL's sprawl! :D As for the distance between KL's official boundary and Putrajaya's official boundary......I guess it should be less than 20kms.....I'll try to get a more accurate figure soon ;)

Yes, but isn't it slated to be the future capital of Malaysia? That's why there is a lot of construction here now on a grandiose scale.

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city 45 minutes away from the new administrative city Putrajaya..

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/2/9klpanorama.jpg

Malaysian economy kept growing steadily last years...In Kuala Lumpur, I think ppl are trying to keep the city as green as possible...like preserving the oldest rain forest(Bukit Nanas) inside the city, some city parks, and lake gardens...they got not much space left apart from KP Baru.
So Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, etc are the prodcuts of careful urban moving and replanning programme...not too far from Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya, unlike purpuse-planned adminstrative cities in USA, Australia, or Brazil..Putrajaya is a city itself and surbub ciy of Kuala Lumpur or a twin capital cities feeding each others. Maybe due to a small country as malaysia is in term of size and population...

A day out in Putrajaya

By GEETHA KRISHNAN

WHEN a visit to Putrajaya is suggested, Klang Valley folk are often daunted by the distance involved and sceptical of what the federal administrative capital has to offer, ultimately.

Yet, the distance should hardly matter to a community used to battling traffic daily within the city, and there is much in Putrajaya that would amaze, enthral, educate and inform.

Driving to Putrajaya is a pleasant experience, as a network of highways ensures fast and easy access. For those who prefer not to drive, the Express Rail Link from KL Sentral stops at Putrajaya, where they can hop into taxis and NadiPutra buses which will take them around the city.

The Star Metro has drawn up an itinerary for those keen on a day-trip with the family:

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2004/10/p22visitor.JPG

A visitor to Taman Botani Putrajaya taking his child on a ride through the park.

8am

Head to Taman Warisan Pertanian (TWP) in Precinct 16 where the Penanggah (Live Kitchen) offers a variety of delicious Malaysian breakfast. The rustic setting here exudes a homely atmosphere that most would bask in.

The agro-park that opens at 9am serves as a living museum for the nation’s agricultural treasures, so a morning jaunt here is educational. TWP offers visitors the chance to see, touch and smell over 180 industrial crops, fruit trees, palms, herbs and spices.

10am

Hop on board a tram at Taman Botani in Precinct 1 for a quick glimpse of the sprawling botanical garden or rent bicycles and embark on an exciting journey of discovery of the plant life that thrives in the tropics of Africa, Tropical America and Asia Pacific.

Visitors are also welcome to explore the garden on foot. When the sun bears down, head to the Visitors’ Interpretive Centre where the children can gaze at the interactive exhibits on flora and fauna and take part in basic science experiments.

Noon

Escape from the blazing sun to the cool confines of Alamanda Shopping Centre in Precinct 1. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Rasa food court or the various cafes and restaurants here before embarking on a shopping escapade.

Meanwhile, energetic tots can be dropped off at the Little Buds facility where they can play and rest under the watchful eyes of the staff. The service is free for the first two hours.

3pm

Head for the Lake Recreation Centre in Precinct 13 where the family can enjoy a range of watercraft activities. There is a café serving snacks here if you wish to enjoy an early tea.

Duffy boats will also take you to coin-operated BBQ areas that are, however, accessible only till 7pm.

For an enriching experience, gather the family to quietly watch the pelicans and Mandarin ducks of Putrajaya Wetland when they come out to feed.

5pm

Dataran Putra and Putra Mosque in Precinct 1 are the two popular landmarks in the garden city. They attract droves of locals and tourists during weekends but are best visited in the evening.

The Turkish bazaar, Souq, below the mosque area offers a wide range of souvenirs and trinkets while the nearby Selera Putra food court offers a splendid view of Putrajaya Lake.

6.30pm

The family might never make it to Venice but at least they would remember the gondola ride on the Dondang Sayang perahu, operated by Cruise Tasik at the nearby Jeti Putra.

The leisurely ride offers glimpses of famous Putrajaya landmarks and an up-close view of Istana Darul Ehsan, the holiday palace of the Sultan of Selangor.

7.30pm

Putrajaya assumes a different appearance by night when the entire garden city is bathed in lights. Monumental buildings like the Palace of Justice feature an amazing façade while the bridges are simply breathtaking.

To cap a memorable outing, enjoy a great drive around Putrajaya before you head for home.

ASTAKA MOROCCO

Peremba Construction’s excellent track record in delivering quality fast track design and build projects especially in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya has not gone unnoticed. The company was selected to undertake the design and construction of the Astaka Morocco project in October 2002 and successfully completed it in less than a year i.e. in September 2003.

Refined architecture and skilled craftsmanship deeply rooted in the Moroccan heritage has often been regarded as unique and well depicted through its buildings and monuments. In fact, Morocco undoubtedly has one of the richest and most remarkable urban architecture in North Africa. People all over the world will certainly relate to its fascinating interior and exterior craftsmanship replicated in its ceilings, walls, pillars, mosaic, furniture and ornaments.

In recreating the Moroccan ambience for the contemporary scene, the Astaka Morocco, set to become a prominent landmark in Putrajaya, showcases the unique Moroccan and Moorish architecture, which is incidentally believed to be first of its kind in the ASEAN region.

According to Encik Azman Marzuki, Peremba Construction’s Chief Operating Officer, the Astaka Morocco embraces the remarkably unique and famous Moorish traditional Islamic design typically found in Spain with a composition of intricate design finishes, landscape, water features, arts, and handcrafts.

"From the onset we believe we should not simply replicate the Moroccan building and architecture. It will be too literal and simple, and would not do justice to this great art form. Neither would it be appropriate to the era in which it flourished nor to Putrajaya as a city for the 21st century."

For guests, the first glimpse of the Astaka Morocco captures the mystery and excitement of the exotic North African Kingdom. Once inside, one cannot miss the interior scene, a recreation of a typical Moroccan pavilion.

Development of the Astaka Morocco is an idea mooted by the Malaysian Government. Construction of the building symbolizes the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries especially with its people and culture.

In making this a reality, Peremba Construction Sdn Bhd was entrusted to be the contractor to oversee completion of the project.

Peremba Construction’s expertise and experience as one of the country’s leading players in the construction industry have been channeled into the development, offering Malaysians a Moroccan experience.

Successful construction of the building reflects the Company’s pursuit in being a company that is diversified in its expertise.

En Azman Marzuki cites the Astaka Morocco as being a challenging project for Peremba Construction in terms of the building’s complexity and intricate craftsmanship.

"The project was predominantly challenging in terms of the intricate skills required, tight timeline to observe, and materials needed."

For example, fabrication of different forms of artwork for the ceilings, pillars, walls and others were done in several villages in Morrocco. This therefore demanded elaborate coordination on the part of the contractor.

Skilled Moroccan artisans were also brought in for the final touches to create the detailed and intricate geometric patterns, which are part and parcel of the building, a characteristic of Islamic style and colour. These skilled craftsmen had expertise in zellij architecture, gypsum plaster and woodwork. These components define the Astaka Morocco and its unique architecture.

Guests who walk into the Astaka Morocco are bound to be fascinated by the arched columns, beamed ceilings and delicately carved wooden doors and feel as though they have been transported to a setting typical of the elaborately ornate famous cities in Morocco.

Reminiscent of Morocco’s Ancient Cities

Stretched over two acres of land with a built-up area of 18,000 square feet, the pavilion also incorporates the design styles and elements of the four "Imperial Cities" of Rabat, Meknes, Fez and Marrakech in Morocco. Two smaller rooms, the Essouira and Rif Atlas, represent the Atlantic coast on the west and the mountain range on the east.

The grandeur of the place lies in the three major zones or components of the Astaka comprising of the entrance courtyard, King’s Court and Granada Court. Each of the three zones is celebrated by the installation of ‘gates’: City Gate, Palace Gate and Splendour Gate respectively.

As in many buildings found in the Islamic world, Astaka Morocco has many ‘hidden’ qualities and symbolisms portrayed in the courtyards or gardens leading to the inner sanctum - Granada Court. Traditionally the inner sanctum is regarded as the most private space, adorned with wealth and beauty.

http://www.pecd.com.my/imageproject/picspecial/astaka1a.jpg

Granada Court - View at corridor area

http://www.pecd.com.my/imageproject/picspecial/astaka6a.jpg

Classic symbolisms in Islamic architecture and landscaping, such as water bodies reflecting heavenly qualities, are also incorporated in the design of Astaka Morocco.

Some are quite evident and commonly used for example the resplendent looking columns of pillars representing the 5 Pillars of Islam.

The design also addresses the Duality of Forces in nature (akin to the Chinese Yin and Yang) that is ascribed to early Islamic art which explain the presence and interplay between positive and negative aspects of life, male and female, young and old, and day and night.

http://www.pecd.com.my/imageproject/picspecial/astaka5b.jpg

The water fountain situated right in of the Granada Court, was modeled after the Lion’s Court of Alhambra. Instead of the famous lions, the fountain represents the symbolic presence of Lions. The walls of the courtyard are adorned with calligraphic verses from the Quran. Details of the arches and roof eaves are a sight to behold. The floor pattern found here is typically Moroccan.

There are many other hidden aspects incorporated in the design of this pavilion, and these will be revealed to those who care to observe. What is certain is the unique attraction of the Astaka Morocco architecture that lies not only in its structure but also in its awesome manifestation of aesthetic values.

The unique Astaka Morocco, located within the Taman Botani in Precinct 1, Putrajaya will definitely enhance the beauty and serenity of the place.

Hey everyone, I am trying to find some wetland or habitat enhancement areas that are manmade and recently were built in Malaysia - by the way Putrajaya is absolutely incredible - what a place to work and live! Does the city have any of these "restoration" type areas or developments within any of its suburbs? Here in Florida we almost always have to create one when ever we build a subdivision.
Thanks!!

A mini-Putrajaya for Pakistan
By Fauziah Ismail

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12:
A Malaysian company is designing a mini-Putrajaya in Islamabad, Pakistan. The mini-Putrajaya, on 2,600 acres of land, will serve as the new General Headquarters of the Pakistan Armed Forces.

TAK Management Consultants Sdn Bhd, the master planner of Putrajaya, beat four other short-listed companies, including another Malaysian company, for the contract.

A total of 11 companies had vied for the contract to design the mini-Putrajaya, which will see Pakistan's Armed Forces moving from Rawalpindi to Islamabad.

TAK Management Consultants managing director Teo Ah Khing (picture) said the mini-Putrajaya would have all the essence of Malaysia's Putrajaya where, in an eco-symbiotic manner, nature and man-made structures co-exist.

Hills remain intact while the dry ravine in the area will be turned into a cascading river with water flowing from one lake into another.

"It will be an ultra-modern city like the Putrajaya here," he told the New Straits Times at his Bangsar office.

The mini-Putrajaya will have office complexes to house the Ministry of Defence and divisions of the Armed Forces, namely Army, Air and Navy. The residential areas can accommodate 60,000 people.

Two new components to the project will be an Army university and a recreational area. The company began designing the mini-Putrajaya last June. Physical work will begin next February pending approval ofthe design by Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf.

Teo has held monthly meetings in Islamabad on the designs of the project since the company secured the contract.

Like Putrajaya, the mini-Putrajaya is expected to take three years to complete.

In Pakistan, besides the mini-Putrajaya project, TAK Management Consultants is involved in the design of the Lahore Golf Course, hotel and housing developments for its client, Bandar Raya Developments Bhd, and the proposed Army Heritage Museum and Theme Park at the Ayub National Park in Rawalpindi
