Feel free to post photos in this thread!

However, there are a few rules I apretiate if you follow:
1. Maximum two images per forumer per day.*
2. No offensive pictures.
3. The photos should have an urban character. That means preferably not pictures of your dog, or your last mountainclimb.
4. The photos must be taken by you.
5. You are encouraged to describe where and when it was taken, but this is not necessary.
6. Apart from this, they can be from anywhere in the world! :)

* This rule has changed from one to two images during the lifetime of the thread.

I'll start. This morning, on my way to work, I had my camera with me. This is at Jernbanetorget("Railwaysquare") outside the centralstation.

Nice photo and buildings, especially that located in the centre of your picture, but the street lamps are not nice. Those should be replace by more "stylish" lamps.

Cars in Old City. There is high price to be paid to enter the Old City. When leaving the Old City, the ticket is checked once more. Unintentionally this has turned Old City in fine car parking place for rich people.

Fabulous idea, my fellow wannabe urban photographer. :) I'd like to comission you and Gatis take more photos of your cities' downtowns!

I took this photo in downtown Helsinki last July. It shows a crowded Alexander's street, one of the main shopping venues in the city. It's also known as our very own little Wall Street, for during lunch hours all you see are stockbrokers from the Helsinki Stock Exchange and people working in insurance companies and banks.

Traffic on the street is limited to taxis and trams. Senate Square with its cathedral is located along this street, which starts from the Mannerheim street, going all the way to the sea near Uspenski church.

Tram number 3 (on which the camera was focused) is the one I use to get to my apartment.

Nice stuff guys and thanks for the comments.

I took this picture last evening near Hotel Torni, the only high-rise building in downtown Helsinki. One of my favourite streets, Bulevardi (boulevard), goes horizontally across this picture where that building under renovation is. Notice the sign of a Russian restaurant on the left.

Helsinki wasn't designed for cars and this shows whenever you look at the sides of the streets! Then again, I wouldn't want to have huge parking lots in the downtown either. Underground parking halls are probably the answer, but there ain't enough of them!

@Mantaz: there's plenty of "open areas" outside the old town.
Old Town should be rebuilt as much as possible imho.

John
September 9th, 2004, 06:12 PM
That's what I mean, this "open area" formed thanks to fucking commies who were preparing land for a new 4 lane street in there just after WW2, the plans were abandoned and now we've got that shitty "open area", it looks awful.
But that's ok, this thread is about urban photos :)

I was talking about the commieblock, the only at the corner. Maybe others were built mostly during the stalinist period, but only buildings at the right side going from the townhall are "noticible". However, rebuilding the houses in that street won't tear those commie buildings down and will become a half stalinist and a half kitch street. Is it good? I don't think so, better restore it as an open area. Oldtown charm isn't all about the buildings anyway :|

Urban moments from Helsinki

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/oberleutnant/threadpic.jpg

First part - top of Hotel Torni, August 2003. I took it during the Helsinki meet-up with Jonas (John), Nicke (Designwise) and Jukka (darkmage).

Middle row - Alexander's street, July 2004. The one on the right - Mannerheim's street, April 2004.

Below - July 2003, near the central railway station.

PS

I couldn't imagine myself living in a city like Hong Kong or Shanghai. Also, while those places might look cool with their 'scrapers, ordinary folk there aren't that lucky. It's all just exterior and superficial beauty.

(then again I haven't been to those cities, either :))

Hehe, I see you left some of "Finns looking left" out of the picture, Toni;)

I've now began to take the camera with me everywhere I go. This is from yesterday morning. You may recognize the building in the background.;) This is taken at the eastern entrance of the centralstation, where the pedestrianbridges from Oslo City and the bus terminal meets. You see the latter one in the image. You may see the beggar that sits there. It's his regular spot, he always sits there, summer and winter. Although relatively few people give to beggars, I bet he makes a pretty nice income, as this pedestrian bridge is used by 100.000 people a day.

Also thanks to Toni(Oberleutenant) for helping me with the photo.

Today's image is a response to yesterdays photo by Oberleutenant. If you like buildings from different eras right next to eachother, clearly Oslo is the place for you:D

Like this photo I took last week demonstrates. It shows the same buildings as in my first photo in this thread, only from a different angle. Here we have from the left; shoppingcentre from the 80'ies(barely visible at the edge of the photo), hotell from the 50'ies, offices from 2000, 60'ies(guess), and 19'th century(guess).

Today it is time to show some of the bad aspect of an urban enviroment, and also to moan about the fact that winter is around the corner. I took this sometime during last winter, when the smog in Oslo was at its worst. You see, every winter, we get a few weeks where the air pollution is as bad as in Mexico City and Cairo. That occurs when we have had a dry, cold period with little wind. Oslo lies in a pot, so in those weather condtition, the polluted air don't get a chance to escape, hence it lies as a brown lid over the city. Part of the reason it gets so polluted is also because of the iron-knots that is common here on wheels on cars in the winter.

To the right is Posthuset. We also see what is awarded the ugliest building in town, Galleriet, that long one on the left, spanning over a motorway brigde. All in all a pretty grim picture.

And, sorry about the bad quality:D

Yeah I agree. I hope they never hire me as a tourism promoter :D. But that is a "real" picture. I kinda like "depressing" pictures, they usually have something beautiful to be found :). And urban things can sometimes be depressing. The most urban picture i can IMAGINE, would be something like shot in NYC or a similar city, it would have a begger/homeless guy in it, some fog/steam, red brick walls and perhaps an elevated traintrack or something like that. :D.. yeah tell me how many movies is that scene in :D

Autumn is on it's way. Some interesting facts about the 9 buildings in the picture (all are not showing). Built in the early 50's, 9-10 floors + attic=11-12floors. There are 11km of steelconcrete-piles in the foundations of the buildings, and the walls contain about 9 million bricks, interesting isn't it?? :D

To be honest, the idea to take a photo of Radisson Plaza from that angle was not my idea, but the idea of a drug-addict. It was used in a campaign a few years ago to tell people that drug addicts are people too. Under the photo it said something like "This is what happens when you give a camera to a drug-addict".

Tourne, I'm again so happy to see you participate this thread. (yes, that was from Tampere)

Grendy, now that's more tourist brochure worthy! Let's just slightly increase the propaganda-o-meter, and these foreign devils will believe that all what Tampere has are beautiful buildings and a stunning high-rise hotel.

From the city center of Kouvola, a small town in Eastern Finland with a population of 30,000 inhabitants:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/oberleutnant/hansataas.jpg

"Hansa" tower, a mixed office / residential building.

Considering the fact that the town really has only 30,000 inhabitants, but five high-rises in its city centre (yes, five!) that's quite an achivement.

Indeed, let's not do that! I walk past that place every time in Kallio and all those 1970s buildings and concrete structures near Merihaka (none of them are visible in the pic) really ruin the place when you think what it could've been without the 1970s period of tearing down old buildings.

Again I'm digging in the archives. This was one of the first images I posted on this forum. Taken around christmas last year, at Youngstorget(marketplace). This is where most demos are held, important speaches is done etc. In front, you see what was probably the first highrise in Oslo, Folketeaterbygningen from 1935. You also the the HQ of the progress party. And in the background....well...;)

Arvid, should you change the rules so that maximum number of pics per day could be two instead of one? It could be done so that there still would have to be few hours between posting the pictures.

You can see the railway tracks leading to the station - which according to Jarmo "isn't much to see". Despite the neglected look of the area, it looked interesting from far away. *wants to check it out someday*

awright, I'll change the rulez to maximum two pictures per day:okay: It won't matter if the two are in one, or in separate posts. And since I am the dictator of this thread, I'll be the first to take advantage of this new rule:D

The best club in Oslo imo, Blå (means blue), and one of the most important clubs in Europe for new experimental music that crosses genres like jazz/house/funk etc. The reason for me posting this today, is that I'll be there later today, at a concert with norwegian Tom Hell.

The entrance is around the corner.
