View Full Version : BELGIUM | Port of Zeebrugge
Meurisse February 20th, 2011, 03:22 PM The second port of Belgium (after Antwerp): Zeebrugge. One of the fastest growing ports in Europe!

As a result of the large-scale development of Zeebrugge as a deepsea port in the seventies and eighties, the port consists of 3 major parts :
The outer port
http://preview.mbz.be/sites/all/files/u9/voorhaven_18.jpg
The outer port has been constructed on land reclaimed from the sea and is protected by two breakwaters having each a length of more than 4 kilometers. Because of the direct access from the sea and the substantial waterdepth the outer port is appropriate for the fast roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. LNG vessels also moor in the outer port. Vessels, berthed in the outer port, do not pass through the locks.
The inner port
http://preview.mbz.be/sites/all/files/u9/achterhaven_2.jpg
Via the Pierre Vandamme lock (1985) and the Visart lock (1905) vessels sail towards the inner port. The inner port houses two large docks, the Northern Inlet dock and the Southern Canal dock. Around these docks logistic centres are located for the handling, storage and distribution of either new cars, breakbulk cargoes or food products such as vegetables, fruit, fruit juices, fish, meat and coffee. Many of these cargoes receive added value in Zeebrugge .
The seaport of Bruges

Via the Baudouin canal ships sail to the port of Bruges. In this port zone terminal activity is mainly focused on bulk and conventional cargoes.

Meurisse February 20th, 2011, 04:27 PM the results of last year, 2010:
http://www.zeebruggeport.be (http://www.zeebruggeport.be/en/node/788)
Zeebrugge cargo throughput rises by 11 %
In 2010 the total cargo throughput in the port of Zeebrugge grew by 11 per cent to a volume of 49.8 million tons. All port sectors gained ground. 2010 is marked by a strong rise of the roro traffics and the recovery of the traffic of new cars.
RORO (+30,9%)
In 2010 the roro traffic recovered and grew by 30.9 % in comparison to 2009 to a volume of 12,450,000 tons.
This constitutes a growth of 5.4 % in comparison to crisis year 2008.
Beautiful results were registered by the traffics on the United Kingdom and Ireland (CF Purfleet, CF Killingholme, DFDS Seaways Rosyth, P&O Tilbury and C2C Dublin).
Also the Transfennica service to Bilbao registered a strong growth.
A total of 1,020,000 trucks transited in Zeebrugge.
NEW CARS (+24,8%)
The traffic of new cars started its recovery in 2010. With a handling volume of 1,605,000 units the traffic rose by 24.8 % in comparison to 2009.
This constitutes still a decrease of 24.5 % in comparison to 2008
The automotive business will probably need 2 to 3 years to set a new record.
CONTAINERS (+7,4 %)
The Zeebrugge container traffic rose by 7.4 % to a record volume of 2,500,000 teus.
In 2010 the container business was growing until August, in comparison to 2009. In comparison to 2008 the container volume grew by 25 % (in tons).
In tonnage the Zeebrugge container traffic clocked at 26,500,000 tons. This is a rise of 6.4 % in comparison to 2009.
Especially the services of CMA CGM largely contributed to these results. On 6 December the terminal of CHZ/PSA handled its one millionth teu of the year. A handling record.
As from the second half of the year the growth of the container traffic weakened (discontinuation TNWA/SCX and interruption Maersk Line AE9).
LIQUID BULK (+0,5 %)
The liquid bulk clocked at 8,030,000 tons. This is an increase of 0.5 % in comparison to 2009 and a rise of 29.5 % in comparison to 2008.
The lng traffic accounted for 4,960,000 tons.
The remaining liquid bulk (bunkering, fruit juices, molasses) amounted to 3,070,000 tons.
CONVENTIONAL CARGO (+25,9%)
The conventional traffic grew by 25.9% to 1,090,000 tons in comparison to 2009 (+ 28.2 % in comparison to 2008).
More wood pulp (from Brazil), timber and potatoes (weekly to Saint Petersburg).
SOLID BULK (+7 %)
The solid bulk grew by 7 % to 1,710,000 tons. (sand, grint, cereals, fodder, coal).
(-12,4 % in comparison to 2008)
CRUISES (+7 calls)
In 2010 a record number of cruise vessels called at Zeebrugge. 66 calls in comparison to 59 calls in 2009. (43 in 2008).
In 2010 Zeebrugge welcomed 201,250 cruise passengers, in comparison to 168,204 passengers in 2009. A growth of 19.6%.
PORT SHIFTS (+20%)
In 2010 a total of 281,000 shifts were executed in comparison to 234,786 shifts in 2009. This is a rise of 20 %.

Meurisse February 24th, 2011, 02:52 PM recent pictures (~nov 2010)

Meurisse March 2nd, 2011, 01:37 PM Some time ago some Flemish dredging firms presented their plan, "Vlaamse Baaien" (http://www.vlaamsebaaien.com/) with several artificial islands for the Belgian coast. Also in the same plan they suggested to enlarge the port of Zeebrugge massively:
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww67/meurisse/buitenhaven-zeebrugge.gif
http://vlaamsebaaien.com//sites/default/files/images/project-background.jpg
It's hard to say if anything will become reality in this plan but definitely they are planning/dreaming the future!
Meurisse January 7th, 2012, 02:34 PM www.zeebruggeport.be
2011 Second best year
Until mid 2011 Zeebrugge maintained the level of the handling volume of 2010. Due to the economic slow-down the traffic slackened as from the second semester. The decrease occured in the container business. The other port sectors showed an increase.
As a result, 2011 is Zeebrugge's second best year, with an estimated cargo throughput of 47.3 million tons (-4.5 %).
(figures mentioned are an estimation)
Roro
The roro traffic rose by 5.9 % to a volume of 13.1 million tons. The traffic increased to Finland, Ireland and Spain. A total of 1,050,000 trucks transited in the port (+3.8 %).
New Cars
The traffic of new cars grew by 10.5 % to a total of 1,777,500 units. Despite the important impact of the Japan tsunami wich affected the imports of new cars in Zeebrugge during 5 months.
Container traffic
The worldwide container business is facing turbulent times. The stakes are high on the Europe/Asia route. The scaling-up and the expansion of capacity emerge on a moment of economic growth recession in Asia and stagnation in Europe.
The Zeebrugge container traffic, which is focused on the Europe/Asia trade, was affected by the deteriorating economic situation and the slow-down of the Europe/Asia trade. Various deepsea services have been reshuffled. In Zeebrugge this also affected the related container feedering services.
The container volume dropped by 11.1% to 2,222,000 teus. This is just beyond the 2008 result.
Liquid bulk
The total liquid bulk grew by 6.4% to 8.5 million tons, 5.2 million tons of which is lng. 2011 was a record year with 81 lng calls instead of 77 in 2010.
Solid bulk
The solid bulk fell back by 2.8% to 1.6 million tons.
Conventional cargo
The conventional cargo increased by 4 % to 1.2 million tons. More wood pulp was handled.
Cruises
2011 was a record year for the cruises in Zeebrugge. The coastal port welcomed 75 cruise vessels in comparison with 66 in 2010 (+13.6%)
We received 243.444 cruise passengers.
The daily passenger service of P&O Ferries to Hull included, Zeebrugge received in total 624,997 passengers.
Port labour
In total 278,111 shifts were executed, a status quo in comparison with 2010.
