Hay nako, may kasama na palang iba. Pero wala naman kinalaman yun sa pagiging boxer niya. If it will give him his 'mojo'. Hindi naman siya politician pa na ang pambayad sa querida ay galing sa bulsa ng bansa.

So wait, that was Krista Ranillo? The daughter of Matt Ranillo III?

Dancethingy, don't get mad at dinabaw, he wasn't the one who started that Gayweather thing, it's not here in SSC it started... I hear that from many pinoys even here in the US while watching pacquiao's match, that's even before i see the people here in ssc call mayweather, gayweather.

Mayweather is just so happy and gay that he can see lots of $$$$ in his future fight with Pacquiao. Siempre, pakipot muna siya...pero dahil sa pera, kahit humiga na lang siya sa unang suntok ni Pacman, ayos na....do you think he cares about the prestige of his unbeaten record? Me presyo yan, at his financial state right now, he need that big moolah, then he can by his fame and glory again with his million$.

Yeah-- Dreamthingy, I agree with you. Nobody here started it so we shouldn't really blame folks here. But even if the whole boxing community is doing this trash talk doesn't mean we should do it-- just goes to show how some macho cultures are still unevolved. If you think this is problematic, look at the MMA and pro-wrestling cultures, which I think are more homophobic despite the more homo-erotic nature of those sports/entertainments. I watched MMA once at a bar and everyone on my table (me, the lesbro and my gang of lesbian homies) were like "That's so gaaaay!" (not as a derogatory term, the way the whole "gayweather" crap is like, but in how MMA, as an expression of toughness, is really an expression of machismo and a hypersexualized version of fighting)

By the way, the whole N-word comparison doesn't work in this case. There's a difference in reclaiming the meaning of a word for the sense of empowerment, and the use of a word as a derogatory adjective.

Wanda Sykes got it right:

Pacquiao remember with great power comes great responsibility, now that all eyes are on you and you are looked up to as a rolemodel , especially you playing up your god fearing man image, better be careful where you tread or be labeled a hypocrite.
God that Krista ranillo has no respect for JInkee following Pacquiao even in JInkee's presence. sobrang lantaran, ganyan na pala mga artistang gold digger ngayon. ha ha
JInkee was with him before he became "Manny" It's a shame to break up his nice family over a dime a dozen gold digging pok pok.

Krista Ranillo is the cover story in the August 2008 issue of FHM Philippines. Krista Ranillo is back in Philippine Showbiz after finishing Interdisciplinary Studies major in Communications and Psychology at no less than the Ateneo de Manila University where she is a consistent Dean’s Lister. Isn’t it ironic though that after finishing with those honors in Ateneo she has to just go sexy in the movies..Reportedly, her father, actor Mat Ranillo III cried and oppose her going the sexy route.

Pacquiao hits out at romantic rumours
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=327046&version=1&template_id=45&parent_id=25

AFP/Manila

Manny Pacquiao yesterday brushed off rumours his marriage was on the rocks amid reports the Philippine boxing superstar flew a starlet to Las Vegas to watch him win a record seventh world title.
In an interview aired over local television station ABS-CBN as he prepared to fly home to a hero’s welcome after taking Miguel Cotto’s World Boxing Organisation welterweight title in Las Vegas, the Pacman sidestepped the issue.
Pacquiao, 30, instead admonished the local press to report his achievements in the ring, “not the private lives of people”.
“I hope they honour the achievements that I have won for my fellow Filipinos,” he said.
The glow from Saturday’s one-sided contest has been partly tarnished by reports that Pacquiao stayed in a different hotel from his wife, Jinkee, with whom he has three children, while they were in the US.
According to the reports, the champ paid for the air tickets and hotel accommodation of Filipina starlet Krista Ranillo, who watched the bout live with her own family, helping fuel rumours of a romantic liaison.
“Let us avoid what I call our crab mentality. I am appealing to all of you to avoid that. Let us unite so we will all be happy,” Pacquiao said in the TV interview.
He was referring to a saying that many use to explain widespread poverty in the Philippines, drawing an analogy with Filipinos and crabs trapped in a vat.
As one crab tries to claw its way out, others beneath it try to pull it back down to their own level.
Pacquiao, who claimed a historic seventh world title in as many weight divisions with Sunday’s victory over Cotto, is no stranger to controversy surrounding his private life.
He had earlier been forced to deny reports of a romantic involvement with another Philippine film star, Ara Mina, after the two were photographed dancing the night away at an upscale Manila nightclub.

Problem with these celebrities, they like that fame and glory, they should know, just like politicians, they are supposed to be a symbol and an example to the youth and alot others, they would start a fire and when they are confronted by it, they would pull the "don't pry on their private lives....." Well , news splash!!.They are not ordinary people where people doesn't give shit about except what their families would tell them, the moment the accepted that responsibility of being a public figure, they should hold that responsibility at any cost, it's tough but it's just the way it is.....

For all I care, he should be all proud by it because hadn't it for his money, even bugs won't even pay attention on him... LOL

Rock star welcome at home for boxing king Pacquiao

The Philippines rolled out the red carpet in a rock star reception Friday for pound-for-pound king and newly crowned World Boxing Organisation welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

High-ranking officials and fans flocked to Manila's international airport as the 30-year-old Pacquiao flew in five days after he demolished Puerto Rican champ Miguel Cotto to become the only fighter in history to win seven titles in as many weight classes.

His right hand and ear still bandaged, the future boxing hall of famer talked briefly about his fight, dodged questions about his lovelife and gently poked at his potential next opponent, the brash American, Floyd Mayweather.

"We are not forcing a fight with him. It is right that he is the one challenging me, because my fights score more on pay per view," a smiling Pacquiao told reporters with his wife Jinkee beside him and his three young children playing with his belts.

In the background, a banner read: "Welcome home, the world's best boxer of all time.

He said he first wanted to relax at his mansion in the southern island of Mindanao, before taking care of business -- including filing his candidacy for a congressional seat.

A convoy of 20 plus vehicles escorted by police outriders whisked him to a hotel, arriving to wild cheers and a shower of confetti and balloons. He then had breakfast while enjoying a replay of the Las Vegas fight before motoring to a Catholic church in Manila's Quiapo district to pray.

In a break with tradition, church officials allowed Pacquiao to deliver an inspirational message during the mass attended mostly by ordinary Filipinos who had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the boxer.

"I live my life like everyday is the last. I am proud that for having attained this record," he said.

"It is because of God and your prayers that I succeeded in my fights. I belive in the power of God, one hundred percent," he said.

Pacquiao now has seven titles ranging from 112 to 145 pounds. He weighed just 106 pounds in his pro debut in 1995 and captured his first title in the 112-pound flyweight division.

Doubters who had initially questioned the Filipino's power were silenced in December last year when he forced legendary Oscar de la Hoya to retire, followed by a devastating second round knockout of Britain's Ricky Hatton in May.

His victory over Cotton then cemented his reputation as the best pound for pound fighter, a title disputed by Mayweather, who once held that distinction.

Pacquiao is considered a national treasure in the Philippines, a boxing-mad nation of 92 million people, where police say even criminals and Muslim insurgents take the day off whenever his fights are carried on television.

He has also parlayed his boxing fame into a successful showbiz career, playing starring roles in top-rating movies and a television sitcom, and making him more popular than the president.

His fame though has also brought him trouble. Earlier this week, he brushed off rumours his marriage was in trouble amid reports he flew a starlet to Las Vegas to watch him win.

Pacquiao parade draws cheers, stalls traffic

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 3) Traffic on the streets of Metro Manila ground to a halt as the victory parade of Manny Pacquiao made its way through the metropolis on Friday.

Despite the scorching heat, thousands of Pacquiao's eager followers filled the streets to show their adulation for the Filipino boxing sensation whose latest conquest of Miguel Cotto earned him a niche in history as the winningest boxer of all time, with seven world titles to his name in as many weight divisions.

Near the corner of Roosevelt and Quezon Avenues in Quezon City, a driver climbed on top of his passenger jeep and raised a bottle of soft drinks as if offering a victory toast.

"Mabuhay ka, Manny [Long live Manny]," the man shouted.

Work in almost all business establishments along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City and Manila virtually stopped as employees went out of their offices to greet Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's convoy left the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Quezon City around 10:30 a.m. and is expected to tour around the major streets of Quezon City, Manila, Pasay and Makati.

With Pacquiao are his wife Jinky and Environment Secretary Lito Atienza who feted him with a rousing welcome at the DENR earlier Friday.

Pacquiao arrived at the DENR office at 9:25 a.m. to a shower of confetti and band music.

In a short speech in Filipino at the DENR, Pacquiao thanked his supporters and dedicated his victory to the people.

He will be conferred the Order of Sikatuna, rank of Datu, by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila at 4 p.m.

The Order of Sikatuna is normally awarded “for distinguished service in the field of foreign relations,” according to an executive order that created it. It is usually awarded to diplomats, officials and nationals of foreign states.

Previous recipients included US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the late Jaime Cardinal Sin.

Earlier in the day, Pacquiao went to Quiapo Church, as in the past, for a thanksgiving mass. He arrived in Manila at 5:30 a.m. Friday.
With a report from Alcuin Papa, Inquirer

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Manny Pacquiao’s big win over Miguel Cotto on Saturday was the biggest boxing show of the year, selling 1.25 million pay-per-view buys to best the 1.05 million sold by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez in September.

By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

The much-anticipated bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is all but set for March 13, a source told Yahoo! Sports. Mayweather has agreed to terms and promoter Bob Arum is making a trip to Manila, Philippines, to finalize a deal with Pacquiao, the source said.

Las Vegas, Dallas and New Orleans are the front-runners to host the bout, which is expected to become the highest-grossing boxing match in the sport’s history. Pacquiao is the top pound-for-pound fighter in nearly every major ranking, including Yahoo! Sports. Mayweather is No. 2 in most rankings and was No. 1 in nearly all of the polls before he briefly retired in June 2008.

Pacquiao is coming off a 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, a bout in which he won the World Boxing Organization welterweight championship and erased fears that he is not a legitimate welterweight. Cotto was a legitimate welterweight in his prime and Pacquiao dominated, knocking him down twice and cruising to the one-sided victory.

Mayweather routed Juan Manuel Marquez, who had previously been ranked No. 2 in the Yahoo! Sports poll, in a Sept. 19 fight at the MGM Grand. The public demand for the fight has been enormous, putting pressure on Arum and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who represents Mayweather, to get a deal done.

Promoters had targeted May 1 for the fight almost from the moment that Pacquiao stopped Cotto. But Pacquiao filed Tuesday to run for Congress in the Philippines and the election will be held on May 10. Given that, the bout with Mayweather had to be moved up to March 13 or pushed back until September.

Though there were reports that Arum was considering matching Pacquiao with new WBO super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman on March 13 in Dallas, that was a diversionary move and was never serious, the source said.

A survey team from Top Rank will inspect Dallas Cowboys Stadium as a possible venue. The MGM Grand Garden Arena and the New Orleans Superdome are also in the running to host the mega-fight, the source said.

Is that too soon? Nov 14 to March 13...

Will Pacman to have enough time to recover and rest from the cotto fight... then mentally get ready to fight Mayweather? This would mean he should start training around mid Jan...

I wonder how much the timing of the elections affected this bout...

Arum to meet Manny, ABS-CBN execs today
(http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/sports/view/20091203-239883/Arum-to-meet-Manny-ABS-CBN-execs-today)
LEGENDARY promoter Bob Arum is expected to plane in today to meet with his superstar fighter Manny Pacquiao, and possibly ink a contract with giant television network ABS-CBN.

Although there have been reports that Arum will discuss with Pacquiao a possible clash with WBA 154-lb champ Yuri Foreman in March, there have also been indications that the promoter will offer a hard-to-resist deal for a March 13 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"He’s going to see his star client with a firm deal in hand for Pacman to face undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 in a Las vegas mega bout," reported Michael Marley over examiner.com and carried by Philboxing.com.

"Forget the smokescreens about Pacman fighting junior middleweight champ and rabbinical student Yuri Foreman. And ditto for the one about Mayweather going to Manchester to beat up Matthew Hatton," added Marley.

After Pacquiao filed his certificate of candidacy for the Saranggani congressional seat, the plan was to give him a less risky opponent for March with a victory expected to boost his chances against congressional opponent Roy Chiongbian.

There had been earlier assurances from certain groups that Chiongbian would give way to Pacquiao, and a planned May 1 fight with Mayweather will then push through.

With Chiongbian apparently not giving up the congressional seat, a March 13 bout with Mayweather is now being pushed.

Arum is also expected to meet with ABS-CBN executives to sign a deal with the giant network, most likely over rights to air Top Rank-promoted cards.

Pacquiao's fights, however, will still be aired by Solar Sports which owns the rights to air his remaining fights.

Pacquiao was featured on yesterday's "Morning Edition," NPR (http://www.npr.org/)'s radio show, in their sports section. Here's the text and podcast link.

Pacquiao Gives Filipinos Reason To Cheer (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121482903)

It may only be games, but nothing in culture can galvanize a nation the way a world championship can. And it just so happens, in the months ahead there will be nearly a surfeit of sports nationalism.

It's only weeks now before the Winter Olympics and then, come June, the soccer World Cup, which is by far the most passionate international competition of all.

Yet in 2010, there is one little athlete who can mean more to his country — and to his sport — than all the skaters and skiers and soccer teams in the world.

The man is a boxer, Manny Pacquiao; his country, the Philippines. And what he signifies to his people everywhere is perhaps unmatched in sports history.

Lennox Lewis, the thoughtful former heavyweight champion, has even said that Pacquiao's "grip" on his country "is similar to Nelson Mandela's influence in South Africa."

The Philippines, of course, is an impoverished island nation, which has led to a diaspora of its people. In fact, Filipinos make up one of the largest groups of immigrants in the United States — and they've shown well what they can do with the main chance. Filipinos here are better educated and wealthier than the American population at large.

But Pacquiao is so special to all ethnic Filipinos, rich or poor, in the islands or abroad, because his country has never before produced any champion that it could hold high before the world. No Filipino has ever won a single Olympic gold medal.

Pacquiao is so beloved that when he ran for Congress in the Philippines a couple of years ago, he was soundly beaten largely because, as the adored national icon, his fans voted against him to keep him out of office so he wouldn't dilute his attention to the ring.

He's an extraordinary boxer, the first ever to hold seven world titles, for he began fighting at a tiny 106 pounds and now, incredibly, holds the welterweight crown at 147.

Already, there are those experts debating whether he is the greatest fighter ever — better than Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali — better at his craft than anyone who ever has laced on a pair of gloves. And at a time when boxing has descended so in popularity, Pacquiao has come to mean almost as much to his sport as to his country-people.

He's as exciting in the ring as he is talented. When Pacquiao fights the undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the dream bout that appears to be set — probably on March 13 — it will almost surely produce the largest gate in the history of the sport.

Should he win over Mayweather, himself previously acclaimed the best pound-for-pound fighter, Pacquiao's place in the boxing pantheon will be sealed. But already, he has taken this brutal sport and distilled from its blood and guts the pretty pride that Filipinos never shared before.

Pacquiao Gives Filipinos Reason To Cheer (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121482903)

And at a time when boxing has descended so in popularity, Pacquiao has come to mean almost as much to his sport as to his country-people.

the fact that he is already being talked about with the likes of all these boxing greats mean that pacman is already an all-time great himself. you barely read those kinds of debates concerning mayweather. pacquiao is truly the transcendental fighter of this era.

i hope come march 13, he can do greater damage against floyd than what he did against cotto. and when pacman can achieve that, perhaps, the inflated ego of the airhead mayweather would go pfffftt.

Testing Issues could derail Mayweather-Pacquiao
By Kevin Cole, Yahoo Sports

Nearly every detail is finalized for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao to fight on March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas but one. That one detail, though, may kill the fight.

Negotiations are at an impasse over Pacquiao’s failure to agree to random Olympic-style drug testing, said Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, on Tuesday.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said his fighter is willing to comply with strict drug-testing standards, but Roach won’t allow Pacquiao to have blood drawn 48 hours before the fight.

More From Kevin IoleMailbag: Distractions for Manny? Dec 22, 2009 No denying Freddie Roach is the very best Dec 21, 2009 ADVERTISEMENT

Ellerbe said he would not let Mayweather enter the ring unless Pacquiao agreed to it.

Both sides agreed that the drug testing issue is the only hurdle preventing the fight from being finished. Earlier Tuesday, Golden Boy Promotions officially requested March 13 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission to host the show.

“As Floyd’s management, we are insistent that there be a level playing field,” Ellerbe said. “This is in the best interests of the fighters, the fans and the sport. If you want a level playing field, the best way to do it is to have Olympic-style, random drug testing administered by the premier agency in the world, the [United States Anti-Doping Agency].”

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said the demand is “absolutely crazy,” done simply to harass Pacquiao, who is squeamish about needles, and is proof that Mayweather doesn’t really want the fight.

Arum said the request has been an unsettled issue since the first day of negotiations last month.

“We’re not going to agree to have Manny give blood in training, because that’s stupid,” Arum said. “Every doctor in the world will tell you that is stupid. He’ll give his blood at the beginning of the year and he’s willing to be urine-tested 24/7, but blood doesn’t show [expletive] and he’s not going to do it.”

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser and de facto manager, said Pacquiao believes drawing blood so close to a competition harms the body, but the boxer is willing to have his blood drawn a month away from the fight as a compromise.

Koncz said Pacquiao was willing to pass on the fight if it came to that.

“Manny has a lot more options than Mayweather does,” Koncz said. “Manny is clean and he’s never done a thing, and he’s willing to go to great lengths to prove it. It’s my understanding that this stuff doesn’t just leave your system overnight.

“He’ll take a blood test immediately after the fight, if that’s what they insist upon. But Manny believes very strongly that it would be harmful to him to draw blood that soon before the fight and he plain and simple isn’t going to do it.”

In a statement released by his publicist, Mayweather said he is willing to submit to the testing. There was never any suspicion that Pacquiao had ever taken banned substances until earlier this year, when Floyd Mayweather Sr. suggested he was on steroids.

Pacquiao has passed every urine test he’s been given in connection with boxing matches.

“I understand Pacquiao not liking having his blood taken, because frankly I don’t know anyone who really does,” Mayweather said in his statement. “But in a fight of this magnitude, I think it is our responsibility to subject ourselves to sportsmanship at the highest level. I have already agreed to the testing and it is a shame that he is not willing to do the same.

“It leaves me with great doubt as to the level of fairness I would be facing in the ring that night. I hope that this is either some miscommunication or that Manny will change his mind and step up and allow these tests, which were good enough for all these other great athletes, to be performed by USADA.”

Blood tests for illegal drugs and banned substances are not required by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which would have regulatory control of the bout if it is held in Las Vegas.

In Nevada, a fighter is required to submit to a blood test that screens for HIV and Hepatitis B and C, as well as other blood-borne diseases, as part of the requirement to gain a license.

A license in Nevada is good for one year. In Pacquiao’s case, he received his 2009 license shortly before he fought Ricky Hatton in May. He submitted his blood to the commission between April 5 and April 20, said Keith Kizer, the commission’s executive director.

Kizer said all fighters who fight in Nevada are subject to random urine tests as well as any other medical tests, such as an MRI or a CAT scan, that the commission deems necessary. Arum said Pacquiao is willing to submit to testing by an outside agency but won’t give his blood. Roach said it’s an issue because Mayweather’s side has been insisting Pacquiao give blood as close as 48 hours within the fight.

“We’ll accommodate their requests and do urine testing up the wazoo and we’ll agree to have them done by an outside agency,” Arum said. “Manny has nothing to hide. But he’s not going to give blood because that’s crazy. He’ll do it at the beginning and he’ll do it at the end. That’s how it is done. Ask some former Olympic boxers how many times they give blood.”

Ellerbe said having the testing administered by USADA would quell suspicions about the procedures or the result.

“This is no rooty toot organization,” said Ellerbe, who noted that such testing was accepted by elite athletes such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps and Lance Armstrong.

Roach scoffed at such talk and said it won’t matter to him if the fight is not held.

“I really don’t care, because Manny doesn’t need Floyd Mayweather,” Roach said. “The tests he’s requesting are not commission tests, they’re not boxing tests and this is not an Olympic sport. A urine test is just as qualified as a blood test. [Human growth hormone] is not detected by blood or urine.”

The World Anti-Doping Agency successfully used blood testing at the 2004 Olympics in Athens to test for HGH.

I dunno, if they have proven Paquiao to be taking performance enhancing drug, it would be a big issue for sure. There might be no Mayweather-Pacquaio match if Pacquiao would not succumb into having his blood tested. But since he claimed to have been free of any of these controlled substance, I don't see why he would refuse to get his blood drawn. IMO, Many is not taking one by just looking at him and his features, I would somehow be suspecious of Mayweather as he fits right into a profile of a "steroid face' type. I know these because I have been around alot of guys I know personally and some professionally whose been taking "performance enhancing" substances.

This may also be Mayweather's ploy to avoid the match so he has been blabbing alot to harrass Pacquiao so the latter would not agree on the match, why? who knows, your guess is as good as mine, for all I care, it's a reverse psych to get Manny to refuse and Mayweather would not look like he is chickenning out...

Roach BLASTS Mayweathers - "Mayweather is a coward!"

December 22nd, 2009

8CountNews contacted Freddie Roach to get his thoughts on the recent reports of Manny Pacquiao's refusal to give blood the day before the scheduled fight with Floyd Mayweather. Roach says that he is the one advising Manny not to give the blood the day before the fight. Roach blasts the Mayweather's calling them cowards, and scared. Check out what else Freddie Roach had to say in this exclusive 8CN interview.

8CN - Freddie, todays headlines all say that Manny Pacquiao is refusing to give blood the day before the fight. What is your response?

FR - Well the sanctioning bodies and the state commissions run the boxing world, not Floyd Mayweather. Who is this guy to tell us that we have to have blood tests, or urine tests, or any tests? He's just looking for a way out of the fight. He is scared, and he's just afraid that he's going to get his ass kicked. We don't work for Floyd Mayweather. We fight for the state commission, since when does the fighter make up the rules?

8CN - To play devils advocate, Floyd's people firmly believe that Manny is taking steroids. Why not just take the test and prove them wrong?

FR - So, what if I think Mayweather is taking steroids too?, so does that mean I go out and change the rules in boxing? This guy isn't going to walk all over us, he's not railroading us. This is bullshit, we will go by the rules of the commission, and that's it. We'll go on to other things, and he can make no money fighting some bum. My fighter is clean, I have trouble giving Manny protein shakes and vitamins, let alone steroids. We will pass the drug test, because my fighter is clean.

8CN - Is it Manny refusing to take the blood test or is it someone deciding for him?

FR - It's me, I am not going to let my fighter give blood a day before the fight.

8CN - What can giving blood a day before a fight do to a fighter?

FR - It's just like having sex before a fight. You're not supposed to have sex before a fight, it makes you weak. If you mentally think that, it will. When Manny gives blood it takes him 3 or 4 days to recover from it. I am not going to have my fighter going into a fight feeling weak and not sure of himself.

8CN - Is it true that Manny never wanted to give blood the day before any of his fights?

FR - We will never do it a day before a fight. We never flunked a urine test, and there is no reason to think my fighter is dirty. We have passed every test ever given to us. We go by the commission rules, not no rule Mayweather puts out there.

8CN - So it's fair to say that the ball is completely in Mayweathers court now, you guys are not budging?

FR - Yes it's fair to say that. If Floyd wants to fight us, then step up and fight us. If you want Manny to take a blood test after the fight, no problem, but not a day before.

8CN - Wouldn't a blood test the day after the fight be the same as a test a day before? I mean if Manny was taking steroids, wouldn't the test the day after the fight show the same thing as it would the day before?

FR - Yes agreed. A urine test will show the same thing too,but if they want a blood test the day after the fight, I have no problem with that. I will not have my guy giving blood a day before the fight, that will make him weak. Why is Floyd Mayweather dictating what we do in life? It's crazy... he's a coward and he's afraid to fight us and that is all there is to it.

8CN - If this fight gets scratched, what's next?

FR - We go up and get Yuri Foreman's title. We will go up one more weight division, just for you Floyd!

Why not wait for the winner of Berto vs Mosley?
Especially if Mosley wins. Eh takot sa kanaya si Mayweather.

Malignaggi tinalo yan ni Hatton. Not big enough name for Pacman to fight.
Marquez - nilapa ni Mayweather.

They fight in Jan so maybe laban si Pacman ng mga July. Very early naman talaga youn March 13 na laban... Let Pacman body and mind rest muna.

Both sides are really risking it. I don't see them making even half the money they will make if they fight each other.

Megafight talks take another strange twist (http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ki-pacquiaomayweather122509&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)
By Kevin Iole Yahoo!® Sports

Negotiations to finalize a lucrative boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. took another bizarre twist Friday as Pacquiao threatened libel lawsuits and the chief executive officer of Golden Boy Promotions was accused of telling a Filipino journalist that Pacquiao is using performance-enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said Friday that reporter Ronnie Nathanielsz of the Manila Standard told him that in September, Nathanielsz was in the Golden Boy offices in Los Angeles when Richard Schaefer accused Pacquiao of using PEDs.

Schaefer, whose company is representing Mayweather in a fight expected to be the largest-grossing in history, recalls meeting Nathanielsz in his downtown Los Angeles office but denied the allegations.

Nathanielsz, whose newspaper has not reported the alleged conversation, declined via email to comment.

Talks to finalize the bout between the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world hit a snag on Tuesday when Mayweather issued a statement demanding “Olympic-style drug testing” administered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Top Rank, on behalf of Pacquiao, declined and the sides have exchanged bitter words since.

On Friday, Arum said he spoke on the telephone late Thursday with Winchell Campos, a Pacquiao publicist. Arum said Campos told him Pacquiao planned to file a lawsuit against Mayweather, Mayweather Sr., Golden Boy Promotions and Schaefer for allegations Pacquiao says they made without evidence that he is on performance-enhancing drugs.

Arum said he tried to talk Campos out of issuing a statement from Pacquiao announcing plans for the suit. But Arum said Campos then put Pacquiao on the telephone and that Pacquiao was as angry as he has ever heard him.

“Manny is usually this mild-mannered guy, but he was unbelievably angry,” Arum said. “I never heard him like that. He told me to make it stop. This was a different Manny than I’d ever heard. When I hung up, I said, ‘What the hell was that about?’ ”

When he spoke to Nathanielsz by telephone 30 minutes later, Arum said Nathanielsz recounted a meeting in Schaefer’s downtown Los Angeles office in the buildup to the Sept. 19 fight in Las Vegas between Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez in which he alleged that Schaefer told him Pacquiao was using performance-enhancing drugs.

Arum, who flew to Mexico on Friday for a week-long vacation, said Nathanielsz’s comments clarified things for him. He said he had been puzzled by Mayweather Sr.’s public allegations against Pacquiao, but said they began to make sense after speaking with Nathanielsz.

“Ronnie said he came over early for the [Mayweather-Marquez] fight and he met with Schaefer,” Arum said. “He said they met for a half hour and that Schaefer went on and on and on that Manny is a cheater and that Manny uses steroids and that Manny was on performance-enhancing drugs.

“Ronnie asked him, ‘Why would you take this attitude with this young man?’ Ronnie told me he thinks Schaefer is pissed off that Manny chose us over Golden Boy, though Schaefer is happy to take the money.”

Pacquiao signed promotional contracts with both Golden Boy and Top Rank in 2006. Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya met Pacquiao at Los Angeles International Airport and gave him a suitcase filled with $250,000 in cash, which Pacquiao later was forced to return, as an inducement to sign.

Lawsuits were filed and the matter was eventually settled in arbitration by retired judge Daniel Weinstein. Weinstein ruled Pacquiao would be promoted by Top Rank, but that Golden Boy is entitled to a percentage of profits in perpetuity from all Pacquiao fights as long as Top Rank had Pacquiao under contract.

Arum said he has asked his attorneys to have the arbitration reopened and have Golden Boy eliminated since Schaefer’s actions were not in the fighter’s best interests.

Schaefer said Nathanielsz has had a good relationship with Golden Boy, particularly with its matchmaker, Eric Gomez. Schaefer admitted he hosted Nathanielsz in his office, but denied he made any accusations about Pacquiao and performance-enhancing drugs.

“I would never accuse anybody of anything and those who know me know that’s just not the way I am,” Schaefer said Friday. “I would never go and allege anybody is doing anything, so that is absolutely not true that I would have said to anybody that Manny is cheating. I didn’t.

“We have a pretty good relationship with Ronnie. I think Eric does. He came to see our offices, but there was no accusation of cheating. And in this process, over the last few days or weeks, not once did you hear me say, to you or to anyone else, that I am accusing Manny of taking anything or doing anything illegal.”

Schaefer also questioned why, if Nathanielsz had such information, that he had not reported it.

Mayweather Sr. began inferring that he suspected Pacquiao was on steroids or some other performance-enhancing substance in September, not long after Nathanielsz visited the Golden Boy offices.

After Pacquiao’s victory over Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas, Mayweather Sr. suggested to Yahoo! Sports reporter Martin Rogers that Pacquiao’s improvements were not natural.

“You know there is something going on with him,” Mayweather Sr. told Rogers. “If I was Floyd I wouldn’t fight him because of that. It just don’t add up. Take a look at them old pictures, man. That’s a different dude. And he got knocked out when he was 30 pounds lighter, but now he can stand there and take Cotto’s best shots? Come on.”

Arum reiterated Friday that Pacquiao is clean and said the fight can be salvaged if Mayweather backs off his insistence that testing be administered by USADA. USADA’s procedures demand random testing up to and including the day of competition.

Pacquiao has an aversion to giving blood close to an event, both Arum and his adviser, Michael Koncz, have said, believing it weakens him. Arum said Pacquiao would submit to testing if it were done under the auspices of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

“They’re corrupted in this thing; they’re complicit,” Arum said of USADA. “Both sides here know the people involved in the Nevada Athletic Commission. It can handle the testing and we can work out a protocol that will prove Manny is not on anything and that won’t interfere with the fight.”

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions and the fighter’s closest friend, refused to say Friday whether his side would accept testing done by any group other than USADA, as it has demanded.

Ellerbe said he and Mayweather adviser Al Haymon came up with the idea to require the testing, not Mayweather Jr., as a way to protect their fighter.

“We’re waiting to see if Manny Pacquiao is going to do the Olympic-style drug testing,” Ellerbe said. “The bottom line is that neither Top Rank, nor Manny’s camp, nor Mayweather Promotions or Golden Boy Promotions are going to dictate how the blood and urine testing is conducted.

“I understand this could be the biggest fight in the history of the sport, but all money ain’t good money. You can’t put a price tag on anything when it comes to a man’s livelihood. The fighters are the only ones stepping up, putting their lives on the line. It’s the fighters who are putting their lives on the line, not me, not Top Rank, not Golden Boy, not Al Haymon. Our responsibility here is to protect the interests of our guy and that’s what we’re doing.”

In his statement in which he threatened to sue, Pacquiao denies taking steroids and said he didn’t sue Mayweather Sr. earlier because he didn’t want to create distractions during his preparations for Cotto.

“I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work, hard work, hard work and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it,” Pacquiao said in his statement. “I have no idea what steroids look like and my fear in God has kept me safe and victorious through all these years.

“Now, I say to Floyd Mayweather Jr., don’t be a coward and face me in the ring, mano-a-mano and shut your big, pretty mouth, so we can show the world who is the true king of the ring.”

Arum said he plans to continue parallel negotiations with Lou DiBella, who promotes Paulie Malignaggi, and plans to resume those talks on Monday for a Pacquiao-Malignaggi fight on March 13.

Malignaggi has suggested Pacquiao may have taken performance-enhancing drugs and Arum said Pacquiao would agree to some type of testing administered by a regulatory agency like the Nevada Athletic Commission to quell those fears.

Arum to Mayweather: Goodbye

(The Philippine Star) Updated December 26, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - On Christmas Eve, Bob Arum closed the door on Floyd Mayweather Jr. and opened new ones for Paul Malignaggi and practically anyone else drooling for a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

“Life goes on. We’re not going to let Manny get pushed around by Floyd. Floyd wants to play his games, let him play,” the Top Rank chief told USA Today Thursday, the day before Christmas.

“This all has to do with Mayweather being Mayweather. He never wanted to fight Manny. He wanted a way out. Well, he’s got his way out. Goodbye,” said Arum, adding he’s not about to lose sleep over the matter.

Arum, who represents Pacquiao, and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, for Mayweather, took very little time to get the negotiations going for what should have been a historic fight on March 13.

But because of certain issues regarding the blood testing, the fight came to a screeching halt and again, unless Mayweather sees the light shining on a $25 million paycheck, Arum is looking elsewhere.

Mayweather wanted an Olympic-style drug testing by the US Anti-Doping Agency, one that may require as many as five blood tests and a dozen urine tests, in the months, weeks or a day before and after the fight.

But Pacquiao would have none of it. He has agreed to do three blood tests, on the first week of January, the month before the fight and right after the fight, under the same agency that does the NBA or the NFL. But Mayweather would have none of it.

Pacquiao said it’s Mayweather’s way of running out of the fight.

Now, Arum is looking at Malignaggi as Pacquiao’s next opponent. It could happen on March 13, anywhere in the world, or past the May 2010 elections in the Philippines where Pacquiao is seeking a congressional seat.

There’s also Tim Bradley who wants a fight with Pacquiao, with or without the blood tests, or Yuri Foreman, Juan Manuel Marquez or Edwin Valero.

And Shane Mosley, too, if he beats Andre Berto on Jan. 30.

Whoever it may be, Arum said it’s going to be a big one.

Mayweather can go to England, face Matthew Hatton, earn a few millions and keep his unbeaten record without being touched at all, boxing sources said.

For the meantime, Pacquiao spent Christmas with his family in Gen. Santos City, and should be on the flight to the United States the first week of January, not for the Mayweather press tour, but a family vacation.

Malignaggi, under Lou DiBella, is a fighter, lasting the distance with Miguel Cotto in 2006 then losing to Ricky Hatton before bouncing back with a victory over Juan Diaz. Now, his next fight could be against Pacquiao.

“Manny would absolutely love to fight Mosley. Shane is a super, super young man. We’re not going to start all this crazy nonsense with drug testing given Shane’s background with that unfortunate incident,” Arum told USA Today.

it's disconcerting that the mayweathers' hypocrisy robbed off on the GBP. For GBP's top honchos (notably Richard Schaefer ) to object to a blood test on their own boxer (the cancelled Mosley/Judah fight) and yet their insistence that Pacquiao has got to agree to the blood test is total double standard. When did they have a GBP fighter go through a blood test? This allegation is a scam and the biggest joke that Floyd/GBP started in the media to crucify one man that brought boxing back to its feet.

Manny Pacquiao

For fear of the fight going down the drain, the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr. has softened up a bit on its position that an Olympic-style drug testing be mandated on Manny Pacquiao to ensure a level playing field, Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer said on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

“As long as there’s a blood test, as long as there’s a urine test and as long as it’s random, a [specificied] cutoff date is agreeable to us,” Schaefer told Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times. “We’re saying, ‘We’re OK,’ and we hope Pacquiao [and his promoter and trainer] are OK.”

Pacquiao and Mayweather have both agreed to face each other on March 13, 2010, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but a demand by Mayweather that Pacquiao be subjected to Olympic-style testing was met with opposition by Pacquiao’s people, including promoter Bob Arum, who declared the fight dead a few days ago.

Pacquiao’s camp said the testing being conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) should be more than enough to determine if the Filipino pound-for-pound king is taking banned substances.

Schaefer also told ESPN’s Dan Rafael that “we are OK to move off USADA, “What we’re saying, and what is important to us, is four things – that the tests be random, that they include blood and urine and the time frame, meaning when do you stop the tests before the fight but know they will still be effective. Three of them we have agreed on –random, blood and urine. So now it is a matter of the two sides working out the specifics of the cutoff date to assure it will still be effective.”

Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal was the least surprised over the new developments.

Speaking from General Santos City, Gacal said there’s no other choice but to make the fight with Pacquiao happen.

“I knew that they would revert back,” said Gacal.

Arum said if GBP petitions the NSAC that additional tests should be done on Pacquiao, he will respect it but cautioned that he will not allow Pacquiao to be tested during inappropriate times.

“I will not let this kid get pushed around,” said Arum from his vacation spot in Mexico. Still, Schaefer said doing a compromise is a “two-way street.”

“The pressure is on Pacquiao,” he said. “They keep moving the goal post like they did with the $10-million weight penalty [if either fighter is over the contract maximum 147 pounds], which we agreed to. They didn’t think we would accept that. When we did, they had to find something else to make into a problem. So now they’re saying it’s up to the commission instead of wanting to negotiate the drug testing with us. I don’t want to hear that if the fight breaks up it was because of us. When they came to us with a $10 million weight penalty, they didn’t expect us to say yes. They thought we’d say no. So when we said yes, they had to come up with something else.”

“We are making compromises. It’s a two-way street. If they back off again, I will shut off my phone and spend the rest of the Christmas and New Year’s time with my family, and good luck to all of these fools,” said Schaefer, who represents Mayweather.

Irony reigns if Pacquiao-Malignaggi is made
By Martin Rogers
http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ro-pacpaulie122609&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

It is the most bizarre of sagas, a spasmodically woven tale of speculation, innuendo, litigation and public feuding, and boxing awaits its outcome with feverish anticipation. The political, legal and tactical wrangling that has overshadowed what is supposed to be 2010’s greatest battle, Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, has often been so outlandish that it could not have been scripted.

Paulie Malignaggi (above) publicly insinuated that Manny Pacquiao had taken performance-enhancing drugs.

(John Gichigi/Getty Images)
Yet the emergence of Paulie Malignaggi as Pacquiao’s proposed next opponent, as the Filipino’s promoter, Bob Arum tries to take a step back from what is rapidly degenerating into a twisted mess with Mayweather, is merely serving to provide the greatest contradiction and irony of the entire story.

Other Popular Sports StoriesShocking exit for top college football coach NBA crowd protests by throwing foam fingers Most ridiculous college football bowl names ADVERTISEMENT

It was late on Christmas Eve that Pacquiao’s publicist revealed his client would seek legal action against Mayweather and Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. for actions and comments which suggested Pacquiao had used performance-enhancing drugs.

Hours earlier, Arum had already instigated moves for a substitute bout for his star, assuming that his group and Mayweather’s would never reach common ground on the type of drug testing to be implemented for the proposed March 13 showdown.

The choice of Malignaggi, however, is the ultimate paradox in this extraordinary situation, one which looks increasingly likely to rob the sport of a once-in-a-generation contest between the men widely acclaimed as the finest two pound-for-pound boxers on the planet.

Malignaggi, who re-entered the world title picture by defeating Juan Diaz in a rematch earlier this month, spoke out vigorously recently, using an interview with Boxing Truth Radio to publicly insinuate that Pacquiao had taken performance-enhancing drugs.

“Look at what Manny is doing,” said Malignaggi on the program. “He is absolutely crushing world-class killers. And here he is, this little midget.

“He gets a broken eardrum and he is walking around afterwards like he was dodging spitballs. There are things out there that can do that.

“You are hiding under a rock if you can’t see what I am talking about. This is a guy who was life and death with Juan Manuel Marquez at 120 pounds, and now he has got 15 -17 pounds of muscle on him. Look at how short he is. He didn’t get taller, did he?”

With the chance to make millions by fighting Pacquiao now on the table, it is highly unlikely Malignaggi will be so outspoken in the future.

But, in a telephone interview with Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, the 29-year-old reiterated his position on the subject.

At that time, Pacquiao had not yet issued his legal writ and despite the ongoing dispute, it still appeared the Mayweather fight would probably be made.

When I questioned him about the response his initial comments during the radio interview had generated, Malignaggi responded emphatically.

“Money generates greed,” he said. “Manny Pacquiao makes a lot of money for a lot of people. This is an issue that people don’t address because there is too much money to be made.” When discussions turned to how rumors that linked Pacquiao with drugs had started because of the way the pound-for-pound king had retained his power while climbing through the weight divisions, Malignaggi said: “I think it is pretty obvious.

“People don’t like what I said, but I tried to educate people. But they don’t want to hear it.

“People get killed in boxing, literally not symbolically, so this is an issue that has to be taken seriously. Records are getting destroyed.

“I never knew people could be so stupid. I say what people are scared to say. Why doesn’t boxing want to talk about this?

“Instead I get people coming after me for it, vilifying me, asking why I am doing this. Money always talks. But this is something we should be talking about as well.”

The argument between Pacquiao and Mayweather has centered upon the drug-testing methods to be used in the lead-up to the fight.

Mayweather’s team demanded Olympic-style United States Anti-Doping Agency guidelines that would allow for random blood testing up until two days before the bout.

Pacquiao’s advisors agreed to unlimited urine tests, but did not want blood testing within a month of the fight for fear it would weaken their boxer – who is also said to be frightened of needles.

Malignaggi spoke of a “cover up” and likened the way Pacquiao has remained clear of implication to the Major League Baseball scandal of the late 1990s.

“Major League Baseball knew that more home runs equaled more fans,” said Malignaggi. “Boxing knows Manny Pacquiao destroying bigger guys is a phenomenon. But it is too good to be true, like all those home runs were.

“So it is all covered up and it won’t be addressed.”

We probably won’t hear too much more from Malignaggi on the topic of drugs, not unless he wants to risk legal action and the collapse of what would be the biggest payday of his career.

Yet as the latest chapter of boxing’s biggest drama passes, more twists and turns will surely follow.

Whether each jagged development is merely a precursor to an eventual resolution between Pacquiao and Mayweather and the biggest fight in recent memory, or the latest example of the sport shooting itself in the foot, only time will tell.

Nevada orders urine tests for Pacquiao, Mayweather (http://mb.com.ph/articles/236081/nevada-orders-urine-tests-pacquiao-mayweather)
By TIM DAHLBERG
December 29, 2009, 9:57am

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The head of the Nevada boxing commission ordered Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. to submit to urine tests Monday as a way of trying to break the impasse that has threatened to derail their proposed March 13 megafight.

Pacquiao and Mayweather must submit to the tests within 48 hours or face possible fines or suspension by the Nevada Athletic commission.

"That at least starts the ball rolling," said Keith Kizer, the commission's executive director.

The ball may not roll very far, though, as time continues to run out on the big fight. There was no communication between the two sides Monday, and Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said he planned to announce another fight for Pacquiao on Tuesday.

"There's been absolutely no movement," Arum said.

The tests, which were ordered by commission chairman Pat Lundvall, fall under an out-of-competition testing regulation which went into effect last year and allows state boxing authorities to order boxers to comply. Kizer said about 30 of the tests have been ordered in the last 18 months.

The commission's demand comes a day after Arum said he would not budge off a proposal to do just three blood tests on the two fighters - and none within 30 days of the fight. Arum, who had suggested the NAC decide next month who will prevail in the dispute, said he planned to begin negotiating a fight with Paul Malignaggi if Mayweather's camp didn't agree to the terms.

But Mayweather's manager, Leonard Ellerbe, said Monday there would be no fight on Arum's terms, and charged the promoter with trying to shift the blame for the fight not happening from Pacquiao's side to Mayweather.

"If he's unwilling to do random blood and urine it's a nonstarter," Ellerbe told The Associated Press. "He knows that. If they want to walk away from the richest fight in the history of the sport, that's their decision."

Kizer said the urine tests could play a part in breaking the impasse, though Mayweather's camp has said blood tests are necessary to find performance-enhancing drugs that may not be detected by urine tests. Mayweather backed off earlier on a demand for the tests to be conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency but has insisted all along that they be done randomly and include blood tests within 30 days before the fight.

Ellerbe said his fighter had already made many concessions to get the fight, including the financial split, the penalty for coming in at more than 147 pounds, and the gloves to be used. He said there would be no further concession to meet Arum's terms.

"There's no way," Ellerbe said. "The ball is in their court. But you have to ask yourself why they aren't willing to make sure both fighters are clean to ensure that the biggest fight ever can take place."

Kizer said he informed both fighters that they must take the urine tests, saying Pacquiao would have to find an accredited agency to do his in the Philippines. The state of Nevada is paying for the tests, which cost about $150.

"We're always hopeful that when we do drug testing it comes back negative," Kizer said. "I don't know if this will help the chances of the fight happening. But with all this talk of drug tests, let's actually do one."

Arum delivers final proposal (http://mb.com.ph/articles/236025/arum-delivers-final-proposal)

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Promoter Bob Arum has delivered what he says will be his last proposal to salvage the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight is in jeopardy because of a blood-testing dispute.

Under Arum’s proposal, the Nevada Athletic Commission would have the final say in how much testing there would be for the fight and when it would take place.

Preparations for the fight would go forward and there would be three blood tests – none within 30 days of the fight – unless the commission decided otherwise at a mid-January meeting.

Arum said Sunday that Pacquiao’s side would go no further than the proposal, and that he will begin negotiations Monday with Paul Malignaggi for the March 13 date the megafight was supposed to take place on.

Floyd camp rejects Arum final offer
By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) Updated December 29, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Hopes of salvaging the megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are slim after American promoter Bob Arum’s”final counter offer” was quickly turned down by Mayweather’s chief adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, and negotiator, Richard Schaefer.

Arum, main man of Top Rank, had given the Mayweather camp until Monday (today in Manila) to decide on his final proposal that both parties let the Nevada State Athletic Commission to make the final decision on the blood tests issue.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Arum suggested that both sides explain to the NSAC why their “preferred (blood) testing system” should be used or followed, and let the Nevada body make the final decision.

Mayweather wanted an Olympic-style blood testing to be supervised by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Under the set-up, both fighters should agree to as many as five blood and 12 urine tests - randomly.

Freddie Roach said it’s so random that that USADA can knock on your doors in the middle of the night to get blood or urine samples, in the weeks, days or just hours before the fight, and shortly afterwards.

Pacquiao’s camp said there’s no need for such, and has agreed to three blood tests (one on the first week of January, then 30 days before the match and another after the match, but was again unacceptable to Mayweather.

Arum made the offer of letting the NSAC to decide. And if the Mayweathers disagree, the Top Rank president said he could seal a Pacquiao fight with Paulie Malignaggi on March 13 “within an hour.”

Arum may find himself making the phone call when he wakes up Monday morning while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after Ellerbe and Schaefer literally thumbed down the final counter offer from Top Rank.

“Random is random. We are all intelligent people and we know what random testing is. That is what we want and it has not changed,” said Ellerbe.

“It does not make sense for this to become a commission matter. This is a contractual matter. The commission did not decide the weights or the purse split or how the foreign television rights would be sold.

“If this is Bob’s final ultimatum, then that’s what it is. That is his decision if he wants to take that position. I very much hope this fight can be made, but the reason it is at a standstill is because of the way they have handled things,” Schaefer said.

Pacquiao is vacationing with his family in Gen. Santos City and his adviser, Mike Koncz, said the 31-year-old superstar doesn’t want to make any further comment on the matter.

The other day, Schaefer said Mayweather can do away with the USADA, and it’s just a matter of both camps agreeing on the dates of the blood tests just to make sure that they’re still effective.

But that was the other day.

“We are prepared to have this handled in a way that is not us deciding or them deciding,” said Arum. “The commission meets on Jan. 19. Mayweather’s people can say why they believe additional testing above what we agreed to as necessary and we can give our viewpoint.

“Let the commission decide. If they come away and decide Manny needs to be blood tested every single [expletive] day, then we will go with that. This is the way to go to give this thing legitimacy. I hope they [Team Mayweather] see reason.”

World’s best should fight, says Mayweather adviser (http://mb.com.ph/articles/236793/world-s-best-should-fight-says-mayweather-adviser)
By NICK GIONGCO
January 3, 2010, 7:27pm

If Manny Pacquiao eventually decides to fight somebody else other than Floyd Mayweather, the Filipino fighter won’t be able to justify the mythical title of pound-for-pound king, Mayweather’s key adviser told the Bulletin Sunday.

“Manny Pacquiao says he is the best fighter in the world but Floyd Mayweather knows he is the best fighter in the world,” said Leonard Ellerbe, who is Mayweather’s right-hand man.

“So this is the best fighting the best and Floyd is ready, willing and able to make a fight with Manny Pacquiao,” said Ellerbe, stressing that “they’re going to cheat the public if they go the other way and fight somebody else.”

The camps of Pacquiao and Mayweather have already dotted all the Is and crossed all the Ts save for the demand of Mayweather for them both to undergo Olympic-style drug testing in a bid to “level the playing field.”

Ellerbe reiterated that Team Mayweather has remained firm in its stand for the two fighters to be tested randomly.

“Random blood and urine testing,” Ellerbe said.

Pacquiao, stung by Mayweather’s nasty accusations, has filed a defamation suit against Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), vehemently denying that he has ever taken performance-enhancing substance.

Still, Ellerbe believes there is no other sound alternative but for Pacquiao “to step up to plate” and junk plans to take on lesser-known foes like Yuri Foreman, the Belarus-born Israeli-raised current world super-welterweight champion who now fights out of Brooklyn, New York.

“Pacquiao has intelligent people around him who can advise him to step up to the plate,” said Ellerbe, rattling off Canadian Mike Koncz, lawyer Franklin Gacal and trainer Freddie Roach as men who can persuade Pacquiao to give in to their demands.

While Pacquiao is considering other options, Mayweather is not.

“Our focus is fighting Pacquiao. If they want to go the other way, then God bless them,” added Ellerbe.

Meanwhile, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, back in Las Vegas from a week-long vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, also told this paper that there is still a chance to make the fight happen.

“We’re going to see on Monday or Tuesday,” said Arum, who has a backup plan already in place in the event both parties fail to meet halfway.

Arum said he was glad that Pacquiao “refused to be bullied and stood his ground” by filing a lawsuit against Mayweather and GBP.

Arum said Pacquiao will fight either March 13 or 20 and that there are interested parties in hosting a Pacquiao fight, including the Cowboys Stadium of Texas billionaire Jerry Jones.

“There’s also Atlanta (wanting to host a Pacquiao fight),” Arum said.

Top Rank, GBP face mediation: Pacquiao to hear proceedings (http://mb.com.ph/articles/237081/top-rank-gbp-face-mediation)
By NICK GIONGCO
January 5, 2010, 5:11pm

Manny Pacquiao will be given the opportunity to hear the proceedings when the warring parties – Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) – face mediation this Wednesday in Santa Monica, California.

“We will have a line open to (Pacquiao adviser) Michael Koncz,” Arum told the Bulletin Tuesday from Las Vegas.

Koncz, a Canadian, is the Filipino fighter’s key adviser when it comes to delicate matters like fight negotiations and other pertinent issues.

Arum will lead Top Rank in the talks with his step son Todd DuBoef and a topnotch lawyer joining them as well. Mayweather will likely be represented by GBP Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer and possibly Mayweather advisers Leonard Ellerbe and Al Haymon.

The mediation is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am of Tuesday (early Wednesday morning in Manila) with retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein on hand to make sure the two groups agree on a compromise agreement with the staging of Pacquiao’s fight with Floyd Mayweather scheduled March 13 tops on the agenda.

Mayweather is demanding that Pacquiao undergo random blood testing as a prerequisite for their mega fight.

Pacquiao, however, has lashed back at Mayweather and GBP owner Oscar De La Hoya and Schaefer, filing a lawsuit for defamation for the allegedly nasty allegations that they peddled to the media the past couple of weeks.

Arum said the main objective of the mediation is to save the fight owing to the tremendous response it has been getting from the general public.

Pacquiao and Mayweather are guaranteed to receive $25 million each. Both stars stand to earn as much as $40 million once everything – pay-per-view and closed-circuit viewing sales and gate receipts – are counted.

It was also Weinstein who arbitrated the 2007 dispute between Top Rank and GBP over promotional control over Pacquiao, who had signed with Top Rank and GBP, but later pledged his allegiance to Top Rank.

Boxing: ABAP will be busy the whole year of 2010 (http://positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Sports_28/Boxing_ABAP_will_be_busy_the_whole_year_of_2010.shtml)

MANILA. Jan. 6 (PNA) -- After a successful performance, courtesy of the lady boxers in the 25th Laos Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) last month, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) has drawn up a program that will keep its athletes busy for the rest of the new year.

The Filipino boxers, all 40 of them who are in the national pool, can look forward to tournaments starting off with the National Championships scheduled January 25 to 30 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Ed Picson, executive director of ABAP, told Tuesday's PSA Forum at the PSC main dining hall along Vito Cruz that Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn has already signed the memorandum of agreement with ABAP regarding the hosting of the tournament.

The boxing association, proud of its five gold, three silver and one bronze in Laos despite sending only 10 boxers, is also holding an international tournament that will coincide with ABAP chairman and PLDT/Smart big boss Manny V. Pangilinan’s birthday on July 14.

"It will not be in the level of the King's Cup in Thailand that attracts around 30 countries. We will start small. We're looking at six countries.

"We will call it the MVP Cup, and it's already in the drawing board," said Picson on behalf of Pangilinan and ABAP president Ricky Vargas.

"Then there's the National Championship. We just got word that Mayor Hagedorn has signed the MOA," he added in the same session presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR, Shakey’s and Accel.

As far as foreign competitions are concerned, Picson said up next is the one in Azerbaijan in April. It will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Youth Olympics in Singapore on August 14 to 21.

There are other foreign trips being considered, all leading to the Asian Games.

The quadrennial event, which is the closest to the Olympics as far as Philippine participation is concerned, will take place in Guangzhou, China in November, and ABAP will be hard-pressed to match or surpass the two golds Violito Payla and Joan Tipon won in Doha, Qatar in 2006.

"Five or six international tournaments before the Asian Games will be good for us. The level of competition in the Asian Games is much higher so we will make sure that our boxers are properly trained, taken cared of and well-equipped," Picson said.

However, he said they will make sure that the women boxers will be given exposures as great as their counterparts. The female boxers, led by Annie Albania, accounted for three of the five gold medals in Laos where the Philippines jumped from sixth to fifth overall after 2007.

"I have full confidence that we will be competitive although I cannot promise anything. We're there and it's just a matter of being more focused on our programs. With proper support from government and private sector I don't see why we can't succeed," the ABAP executive said.

Picson added that for this year, the association is going all-Filipino with its coaches.
"To us, the number one factor in coaching is still communication. Even if you have all the knowledge if you cannot communicate well with your boxers it means nothing," said Picson, adding that they have decided to do away with the Cuban coaches, at least temporarily. (PNA)

Mayweather blames Pacquiao for bout's failure (http://mb.com.ph/articles/237500/mayweather-blames-pacquiao-bouts-failure)
January 8, 2010, 2:43pm

LOS ANGELES, January 7, 2010 (AFP) - The proposed mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is off, and Mayweather said the Filipino fighter was to blame after a failed attempt to salvage the bout through mediation.

Mayweather said Thursday that Pacquaio's refusal to accept a compromise on drug testing procedures - including blood tests sought by Mayweather - had scuppered a fight that many say could have been the richest in history.

"Throughout this whole process I have remained patient, but at this point I am thoroughly disgusted that Pacquiao and his representatives are trying to blame me for the fight not happening when clearly the blame is on them," Mayweather said in a statement on Thursday.

Not only did he want to fight Pacquiao, Mayweather said, he wanted to "whip" him.

The fight had been tentatively scheduled for March 13 in Las Vegas. The two sides had successfully negotiated agreements ranging from a split of the purse to the type of gloves to be used.

Mayweather's insistence on pre-fight anti-doping blood tests, however, proved a stumbling block.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said Wednesday the fight was dead, insisting Pacquiao wanted the fight but Mayweather didn't.

On Tuesday the two sides had taken their cases to a mediator in hopes of a resolution.

"In the end, the parties could not agree on a testing protocol acceptable to all," Daniel Weinstein, the retired federal judge who oversaw the mediation, said in a statement on Thursday.

Weinstein also said that details of the discussions were confidential, but said both sides participated in good faith, submitting proposals and considering those of the other side.

"The Mediator himself did not formulate, recommend or issue a Mediator’s Proposal," Weinstein said. "The Mediator did not make an evaluation or finding that any one of the many proposals considered by the parties was the correct protocol."

Mayweather initially called for repeated blood testing up to the day of the fight. Pacquiao wanted a 30-day cutoff before the bout.

Mayweather says he eventually agreed to a 14-day cutoff prior to the bout before medation began, but that Pacquiao wouldn't accept.

"The truth is he just doesn't want to take the tests," Mayweather said.

"In my opinion it is Manny Pacquiao and his team who are denying the people a chance to see the biggest fight ever," Mayweather added.

The negotiations had been further muddied when Pacquiao filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Las Vegas alleging that Mayweather and others defamed him by falsely saying he had used performance-enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao, who has supplanted Mayweather in the estimation of many as boxing's best pound-for-pound fighter, has earned titles in seven weight classes.

Some have estimated their fight could bring each as much as $40 million.

Berto pulled out of the "Berto vs Mosley" fight due to the events in haiti.

Now it looks Pretty Boy won't be able to run from sugar shane anymore.
He's cornered and needs to save face.
No good fighters out there for him to face except Mosley or Berto.

If that fight does push through then "Pacman vs Clottey" fight will be 2nd rate compared to the more intriguing "Mayweather vs Mosley" fight. They are going head to head March 13.

Pacman might lose the PPV numbers contest to Mayweather.
Only thing going for Pacman's fight is that its going to be held in Jerry Jones's new stadium and they have a head start to prepare and market the fight.
If Mayweather vs Mosley is going to be on March 13 then they have less than 2 months and counting to prepare and market the fight.

Ring hails Pacquiao as decade's best
By NICK GIONGCO
January 25, 2010, 7:09pm

The Ring magazine has named Manny Pacquiao as the best boxer of the 2000s.

In its March 2010 issue, Pacquiao was listed on top ahead of Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Juan Manuel Marquez, Winky Wright, Shane Mosley, Marco Antonio Barrera, Rafael Marquez, and Israel Vazquez.

Eric Raskin, The Ring’s contributing editor, wrote that “as far as we’re concerned, Manny Pacquiao is the only choice for number one.”

“In terms of quality of opposition and success across a broad spectrum of weights, nobody else comes close,” wrote Raskin, noting that in the division rankings,
Pacquiao rated No. 2 at super-bantamweight (122 lbs) and feather (126), first at super-feather (130), fourth at super-lightweight (140), and third at welter (147).

The mere fact that Pacquiao was even voted Fighter of the Year thrice (2006, 2008 and 2009) by The Ring and was 23-1-2 in the 00s, is more than enough to name him as the recipient of the accolade.

“And to name anybody else Fighter of the Decade would be unfathomable,” said Raskin.

Pacquiao’s biggest wins during the decade were those over Barrera (twice), Erik Morales (twice), Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao is revving up for a March 13 defense of his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against Joshua Clottey of Ghana at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

Mayweather vs Mosley Fight

Mosley, who said he unknowingly used two anabolic steroids and EPO prior to a 2003 fight with Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas, has agreed to the testing Mayweather requested. Both fighters will be subject to random blood and urine testing which will be administered to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Mosley flew to Las Vegas on Friday to meet with Burstein and sign the contract. Ellerbe on Friday vehemently denied that Mayweather ever considered fighting Paulie Malignaggi or Nate Campbell, both of whom are super lightweights.

“Floyd tried to fight the guy everyone thought was the best guy available and we couldn’t get that fight done, so we went to the next guy on the list,” Ellerbe said. “As I’ve said many times, when Floyd decided to come back to boxing, he did it to be in major events. He’s going to face all of the top welterweights and one by one, knock them all off.”

A news conference to formally announce the fight is expected to be held in New York within the next week.

Gay taunts forced Morales into boxing (http://mb.com.ph/articles/241794/gay-taunts-forced-morales-boxing)

While most boxers enter the sport because of poverty, world title challenger Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales was brave enough to admit a rather different reason why he’s now into prizefighting.

In an interview from his training camp in California, Morales said his friends made fun of him by calling him a homosexual during their childhood days.

“My uncle was a big fan of boxing so I asked him to teach me how to box. At first we tried using a pair of slippers as our punch mitts,” said Morales as he vividly recalled his younger days.

Instead of getting back at those who teased him, Morales tried his luck in several non-commissioned fights usually held in barrio fiestas within their hometown of Talibon, Bohol until a local promoter noticed his raw talent.

“Those who called me gay before are now my closest friends and they now show me some respect. What I want now is to get the respect of our countrymen and I hope to achieve that in my next fight,” said Morales.

Undefeated in 14 fights, Morales, 22, will battle current World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico in a 12-round title fight that is part of ”Pinoy Power 3” card on February 14 (Manila Time) at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Tourists raid Pacquiao stores before Clottey fight

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 02/06/2010 1:30 AM

MANILA, Philippines - If there's anything you can't miss on a trip to General Santos City, it's a visit to boxer Manny Pacquiao's clothing and accessories stores.

This is according to Manila-based and foreign tourists who were seen browsing a Team Pacquiao store for signature jackets and t-shirts that double as tourist souveniers.

General Santos City, located in the southern part of the Philippines, became famous as Pacquiao's hometown more than its booming tuna fishing industry.

The city, located in South Cotabato, is home to many of the Pacquiao family's businesses, including coffee house franchises and boutiques by his wife, Jinkee Pacquiao.

"Ok ang store. [Ang dami ng] pagpipilian. Sinadya talaga namin pumunta dito. (The store is okay. There are lots of things to choose from. We really went out of our way to come here)," said tourist Aida Timbreza.

Team Pacquiao stores, located in both Robinson's Place Mall and the JMP building along Osmeña street in GenSan, are stocked with complete Pacquiao merchandise.

These include new slippers printed with Pacquiao's face, clothes for men and other accessories. Pacquiao, as a brand endorser for Nike, has signature t-shirts, shoes and jackets marked with a special seal.

'Money not an issue'

Dr. Wilma Heramil, who came from a neighboring municipality in South Cotabato called Polomolok, spent more than P5,000 on t-shirts and caps alone.

Heramil told ABS-CBN News that these apparel were specially requested by her relatives in San Diego, California.

"Ipadala ko doon. Gustong gusto nila. Suotin daw nila sa gagawing party. Reason ng gathering nila si Pacman. (I will send it there. They really want it. They will wear these for as party in Pacman's honor)," she said.

Heramil added that her relatives will be wearing these merchandise in time for Pacquiao's March 13 fight against Ghanian boxer Joshua Clottey.

The Team Pacquiao's store supervisor, Rex Aniero, says tourists often flock to the shop every time Pacquiao has an impending fight.

He said items that sell the most are signature items like boxing gloves and Victorinox wristwatches that each cost P30,000--the store's most expensive item.

Aniero said money is not an issue for die-hard Pacquiao fans who come into the store, most of whom are foreigners.

The Victorinox watches have reportedly sold out.

Expecting a new surge of clients in the days leading to the Pacquiao-Clottey match in Texas, Aniero said Team Pacquiao stores will carry special Pacquiao vs. Clottey t-shirts.

He's sure that, just like with other merchandise, these shirts will click with the Filipino boxing champion's fans. Report by Anne Santos, ABS-CBN News.

Floyd’s mouth roars

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. continue to hold the top two spots in the Yahoo! Sports boxing rankings. And it continues to seem as if they’ll never meet each other.

The two men agreed on virtually every aspect of a bout, including a date, a site, a name (Mayweather-Pacquiao in the U.S., Pacquiao-Mayweather internationally) and, most importantly, money.

Mayweather even agreed to a Pacquiao demand of a $10 million per pound penalty for any weight over 147 pounds. But they couldn’t agree on random, Olympic-style drug testing and the bout fell apart.

Mayweather gave a revealing interview with his hometown newspaper, The Grand Rapids Press, in which he suggested that he’ll no longer agree to a 50-50 money split.

Instead of meeting each other, as sports fans were demanding, Mayweather is fighting Shane Mosley on May 1 in Las Vegas, while Pacquiao faces Joshua Clottey on March 13 in Arlington, Texas.

Both fights are on pay-per-view, but the Mayweather-Mosley fight is expected to far outdo it in sales. The Pacquiao-Clottey fight, which is at Cowboys Stadium, will draw perhaps as many as three times as many fans, though the Mayweather-Mosley gate will be larger due to substantially higher ticket prices.

But if Mayweather-Mosley, which has stronger name value between both fighters, does better on pay-per-view than Pacquiao-Clottey, the likelihood of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight ever occurring diminishes greatly. The sides had quickly agreed on terms before, with each man guaranteed $25 million plus a share of the pay-per-view proceeds.

Mayweather, though, will be watching the numbers intently. And if Mayweather and Pacquiao each win, agreeing to financial terms won’t be as easy as it was the first time. “Instead of 20 or 25 (million dollars), he may have to drop to 15, or 17,” Mayweather told Mayo. “And you know me, they may have to throw that extra five or 10 on mine, and we can rock and roll. Take it or leave it.”

And Mayweather also told Mayo that he won’t compromise any longer on the drug testing issue. He agreed to halt testing 14 days out from the fight as they were attempting to reach a deal, but Pacquiao wanted 24 days.

Now, Mayweather says, there will be no cutoff or there will be no fight. “I gave him a chance, up to 14 days out,” Mayweather said. “But my new terms are all the way up to the fight. They can come get us whenever, all the way up to the fight, random drug test. That’s what it is.”

Roach: It’ll be over in 9; Arum disagrees
by Roy Luarca

HOLLYWOOD—Master trainer Freddie Roach believes Joshua Clottey will fall in nine, but topnotch promoter Bob Arum says he expects Manny Pacquiao’s foe to go the distance.

Roach, who had earlier predicted that his prized ward would hand the Ghanaian challenger his first-ever knockout loss, said the end will come in the ninth round of the 12-round bout.

http://media.mlive.com/mayweather_impact/photo/pacquiao-arum-roach-15jpg-6c25b1e1aa657903_large.jpg

Arum, the head honcho of Top Rank which promotes both Pacquiao and Clottey, offered a different scenario, however.

The 77-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer said Pacquiao’s defense of his World Boxing Organization welterweight title on March 13 against Clottey will be “a distance fight.”

Arum said he’d be surprised if Pacquiao carves out an abbreviated win over Clottey, who has been knocked down only once in 38 fights (35-3).

He said Clottey is a very dangerous welterweight who is capable of bucking the odds and clipping Pacquiao’s 11-game winning streak, the last four by knockout.

If Clottey wins, Arum said he’d see to it that there would be a rematch, although that is not stipulated in the fight contract.

While Roach agrees that Clottey is a tough, durable fighter, the four-time Trainer of the Year insists Pacquiao (50-3-2 with 38 knockouts) is going to add the Ghanaian to his list of vanquished opponents.

“We know his pluses and his mistakes,” said Roach. “He has a good defense but is very predictable. If his chin holds, we’ll destroy him downstairs.”

Roach added that Clottey can’t afford to coast against Pacquiao in the late rounds because the three-time Fighter of the Year will “finish him off if he does that.”

While Roach is happy with the way training camp has turned out, Arum is ecstatic that paying fight fans have vigorously responded to the showdown between Pacquiao and Clottey.

Praising Pacquiao’s drawing power, Arum bared that only about 7,000 tickets have remained unsold for the fight, dubbed as “The Event” and scheduled at the spanking $1.2-billion Cowboys Stadium, which has been reconfigured to accommodate 45,000 fans.

Arum said Top Rank plans to stage more big fights at stadiums, rather than at hotels in gambling havens which can hardly sit 20,000.

He said boxing must be seen by the masses and with lower ticket prices, the sport will sustain its revival.

Mexican pug sees Pacquiao victory (http://mb.com.ph/articles/246500/mexican-pug-sees-pacquiao-victory)

LOS ANGELES – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the fancied son of Mexico’s greatest ring warrior, predicted on Friday that Manny Pacquiao will encounter rough sailing against Joshua Clottey of Ghana when the two collide next week in Dallas.

“It’s going to be a tough fight for both fighters,” said Chavez, who didn’t mind waiting for close to two hours for Pacquiao to show up for workout at the Wild Card Boxing Club just to see the Filipino showcase his wares.

Asked whether Pacquiao is going to become the first to deal the Ghana banger a knockout loss, Chavez answered in the negative although he says with conviction that Pacquiao is going to retain the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown.

“Manny on points,” said Chavez, who, once upon a time, had been mentioned as a possible foe of Pacquiao.

Pacquiao and Chavez are both promoted by Top Rank Inc. owned and operated by Bob Arum.

The 5-foot-11 Chavez Jr., who fights in the super-welterweight class, has a record of 41-0-1 with 30 knockouts.

Teased by the Manila-based writers that he might be considered to face Pacquiao in the future, Chavez just smiled before saying his piece.

“Maybe, someday,” said the 24-year-old Chavez, grinning.

Bet $800 on Pacquiao victory, win just $100
by Roy Luarca

HOLLYWOOD—It’s easy to see why Filipino ring superstar Manny Pacquiao exudes confidence just six days before he tangles with Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey.

Unlike before, Pacquiao has been training at the Wild Card Gym here on a full stomach.

“Kain ng kain (I keep on eating),” Pacquiao told Manila-based sportswriters Sunday in his unit at the gated Palazzo residences here. “Sobra-sobra pa (And I had a lot more).”

No wonder, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has lavished superlatives on his favorite ward’s training form.

Boxing writers, observers, photographers and visitors gushed at the way Pacquiao has toyed with experienced sparmates and sweated it out for over two hours each day.

And betting odds only underscore Pacquiao’s seeming invincibility going into the World Boxing Organization welterweight title fight on Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

According to bookmakers, Pacquiao is now at minus-800 and Clottey at plus-550.

It means that an $800 bet on a Pacquiao victory will earn just $100 while a $100 bet on a Clottey win will yield $550.

An attractive proposition is in the “will go” the distance (minus-180) and “won’t go” the distance (plus-140) betting.

If the bout lasts less than 9½ rounds, a $100 “won’t go” bet will earn $140. A “will go” bet of $180 will net just $100.

Pacquiao’s speed, power and strategy have so impressed Roach that the trainer said he expects the Filipino superstar to inflict Clottey’s first knockout defeat.

Because it was Sunday here, Pacquiao took a break and attended to his spiritual obligation. He heard Mass and skipped road work.

“Okay na, ready na,” said Pacquiao, who continues to evade questions regarding the outcome of the pay-per-view tussle. “Good luck to both of us.”

The seven-division world champion closes training camp Monday morning with four rounds of sparring against Raymundo Beltran at Wild Card.

Team Pacquiao will take the three-hour flight to Dallas on a chartered plane along with an entourage of some 150 people.

Pacquiao reaches Texas

DALLAS—From a convoy of vehicles to a customized luxury bus. This time, a chartered jet flies the world’s top boxer.

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and his mammoth entourage arrived here in style from Los Angeles late Monday on a 170-seater Boeing 737, emblazoned with fighting images of the Filipino superstar.

After the two-hour, 20-minute trip, the seven-time world champion in as many weight divisions still had time to reflect on his World Boxing Organization welterweight title defense against Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey this Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I’ll put up a great show for fight fans,” said Pacquiao, who won his two battles—against Marco Antonio Barrera in 2003 and Jorge Solis in 2007—in this huge state, which prides itself with the slogan “Everything is Bigger in Texas.”

After a photo shoot with the media at a private airport near Dallas, Manny’s wife Jinkee and the rest of the 141-strong Team Pacquiao, motored to the opulent Gaylord Texan Hotel in three buses and two Lincoln Navigators.

The entourage was treated to a catered dinner of chicken adobo, beef steak, bulalo, fried boneless milkfish, sweet and sour pork, cassava, peach cakes and fruits.

Fight promoter Top Rank earlier gave the group big a sendoff at the Atlantic airport in Los Angeles. An all-girls cheering squad and a four-man band performed for Pacquiao as he walked the red carpet toward the waiting plane.

In his previous fights, Pacquiao left Los Angeles in a convoy of vehicles. Top Rank boss Bob Arum later hired a luxury bus that had the Filipino ring icon’s image all over it.

http://images.inquirer.net/media/sports/articles/images/pic-03100220070276.jpg

This time, Top Rank wrote a check for $100,000 (about P4.6 million) for the chartered flight on a modified 737 aircraft dubbed “Air Pacquiao.” The plane is similar to the ones used by the likes of the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and other professional teams.

After an early-morning run, Pacquiao is slated to hold his media workout Tuesday afternoon at a makeshift ring in the basement of the 1,511-room hotel.

Clottey arrived Monday from New York on a commercial flight.

Pacquiao’s entourage was the biggest thus far since he started campaigning in the United States in 2001.

Pacquiao registers 146 lbs, Clottey still overweight

By Roy Luarca
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 16:11:00 03/12/2010

GRAPEVINE, Texas – It wasn’t only natural hard work ethic after all.

When Ghanaian Joshua Clottey was spotted doing a very early morning run at the lobby of the Gaylord Texan Hotel on Monday, he was not just trying to keep in tip-top shape. He was actually trying to lose extra poundage.

The suspicion that Clottey, a big welterweight, was still overweight was confirmed Thursday when he and his gang of four were spotted by Team Pacquiao member Roger Fernandez at the convention hall jogging wearing thermal suit for 45 minutes and then skipping ropes.

“Masama nga ang tingin nila sa akin, pero di ako umalis [They threw dagger looks at me, but I didn’t leave] said Roger, younger brother of Buboy, who is Pacquiao’s bosom buddy and trainer.

“I’m sure Clottey’s still overweight,” said Roger. “Otherwise, they wouldn’t do that [wear thermal suit].”

“He looks haggard and his stomach appears to be deep already,” added Roger.

In the final press conference Wednesday, Clottey’s chief trainer Lenny DeJesus claimed that Clottey, who has fought above the welterweight limit (147 lbs) 11 times, twice at 154, has made weight in his challenge for Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.

As Clottey scrambles to shed pounds, Pacquiao relaxes as he weighed 146 even after a hearty lunch of beef stew and pakbet (vegetable stew) Wednesday, according to Roger, adding that the seven-time champion in as many divisions would still eat a full meal, hours before weigh-in Friday afternoon.

Making weight hasn’t been an issue for Pacquiao at 147 lbs. Fact is, conditioning expert Alex Ariza continues to give him protein shakes so as he’ll keep weight.

Arnel Pineda to sing National Anthem at Pacquiao-Clottey fight

Journey lead singer Arnel Pineda will sing the Philippine national anthem (Lupang Hinirang) in the fight between Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao and Ghanaian Joshua Clottey on March 13 (March 14 in Manila), at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

According to Pineda, it was Pacquiao who invited him to sing in his upcoming fight. “I’m really happy kasi matutuloy na dahil nahihiya na ako kay Manny kasi pangatlong invitation na ito sa akin. Baka kasi isipin ay iniisnab ko.” he reportedly said.

I somewhat agree with our flag and heraldic code:

SECTION 37. The rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.

SECTION 38. When the National Anthem is played at a public gathering, whether by a band or by singing or both, or reproduced by any means, the attending public shall sing the anthem. The singing must be done with fervor.

But, not a lot of Filipinos knew who's Julian Felipe and his musical arrangement of our anthem.

To me, as long as it is done with fervor and it doesn't hurt my ears, ayos na yan.... wag lang yung style ni Martin Nievera at sobrang inalis sa tono at tiempo.

Under 1 minute dapat...

Yeah, under 1 minute. Even President Ramos did tried to restrict the rendition of our national anthem.

Pacquiao’s Challenger Clottey Follows in Footsteps of Warriors
by Greg Bishop

ARLINGTON, Tex. — Even here, with Saturday’s welterweight title fight in Cowboys Stadium, with nearly 45,000 seats sold, with Manny Pacquiao defending his latest world championship, the fight that fell apart looms over the proceedings.

Every day, someone asks Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, about the other fight, the dream bout between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., boxing’s undisputed kings. Roach gets that question in grocery stores and shopping malls, from Magic Johnson and the celebrities who train at his Wild Card Boxing Club, even from a waiter at an ice lounge in Los Angeles.

“I was wearing an Eskimo hat,” Roach said. “Same question. Everybody wants to see that fight.”

Instead, Pacquiao will face Joshua Clottey under the most jumbo of all jumbotrons, in the fight few wanted except for the participants, none more so than Clottey. To get here, he survived poverty in Africa, career turmoil and four years spent out of boxing, all to become the latest challenger from the most unlikely of boxing hotbeds.

Pacquiao travels in a luxury bus with his image plastered on the side. On Thursday, Clottey rode to Cowboys Stadium in a hotel shuttle van. Pacquiao houses his sizable entourage in two homes in Los Angeles. Clottey lives in a one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx.

Clottey lives a simple life, born out of necessity, buoyed by boxing, each of his 32 years defined by struggle and by spirit.

“I have the mentality of a warrior,” he said. “I love to be in the ring.”

Clottey grew up in Accra, Ghana, a place he described with two words: small and poor. His father worked in road construction, earning barely enough money to care for six children and Clottey’s mother.

Clottey grew up in a house with one room. As many as 10 people stayed there at a time, sharing a single bed, sleeping in shifts.

Clottey, part of the Ga tribe, grew up in a neighborhood called Bokum. He said the Ga fancied themselves as warriors, and that translated naturally to boxing.

“There is no help from nowhere,” Clottey said. “That makes you a harder boy. You have to be hard. Because if you don’t do that, you’re not going to eat.”

Boxing reigned in Bokum, like football in Texas or basketball in Harlem. Except, instead of pick-up basketball, the boys in Bokum had pick-up boxing.

Clottey said his neighborhood was split into seven areas, each with its own gym. He used the word “gym” loosely, because fights often took place on concrete, inside a thin rope, without hand wraps and with torn, mangled gloves. “Like there,” Clottey said, pointing to a dilapidated parking lot.

From this warrior mentality sprung dozens of warriors, the modern-day kind who fought their battles inside makeshift boxing rings. All the fighters — from the featherweight champion Azumah Nelson to the bruising welterweight Ike Quartey, among others — came from this small, poor place.

Many boxing champions have risen from similar circumstances, but the concentrated volume made Bokum different. Boxers became the area’s chief export.

“Manny Pacquiao’s poverty makes an American kid’s poverty look like luxury,” said the promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Boxing. “From what I’ve heard, Clottey’s poverty makes Manny’s poverty look like luxury.”

Throughout his career, Clottey carried with him the spirit from the neighborhood. He endured a disastrous stretch in England, where he said he never faced top competition. He returned to Ghana, where he began plotting his big break — which was available only in the United States.

He arrived in 2003, broke, and landed in the Bronx, minutes from Yankees Stadium. The first time his manager, Vinny Scolpino, watched Clottey spar, Scolpino had never so much as heard of him.

“I didn’t know him from a hole in the wall,” Scolpino said. “Joshua Clottey was nobody, basically, just another 10-round fighter. I always thought he had something, a spark. Maybe because he had so little, he needed something.”

Clottey compiled a 35-3 record, with 21 knockouts, and his losses came against world champions. He beat Zab Judah. He lost by close decision to Antonio Margarito, despite fighting with a pair of broken hands. In his most recent fight, last June, he lost by controversial split decision to Miguel Cotto.

None of those fighters knocked Clottey down, nor cut him, nor left any mark other than three losses on his record. The only mark on Clottey is the tattoo he had inked a few weeks back, his initials interlocked with boxing gloves on his right forearm.

Roach predicted Pacquiao would become the first fighter to “stop” Clottey, to end the fight before the scorecards are tallied. Clottey responded: “Why would Manny Pacquiao knock me out? That surprises me. He can’t knock me out with punches.”

After the Cotto fight, Arum consoled an emotional Clottey in the dressing room by promising bigger future fights. Neither Scolpino nor Clottey envisioned what came next, when the Mayweather negotiations fell apart because of blood testing and Clottey landed the biggest of all bouts.

All week, these fighters tossed compliments at each other. Pacquiao called Clottey a gentleman and a “nice guy.” Clottey, while vowing to attack the smaller, quicker Pacquiao, lauded his place in boxing history.

Scolpino believes his fighter can shock Pacquiao on Saturday. He pronounced Clottey to be in the best shape of his career and said, “If he comes out with a ‘W,’ man, he’s on top of the world.”

If Pacquiao wins, and Mayweather defeats Shane Mosley on May 1, negotiations are expected to resume for the fight that would transcend boxing. But first, Pacquiao must topple Clottey, a fighter familiar with long odds.

“People have lost sight of Clottey because of the Mayweather stuff,” Arum said. “He’s never had the exposure. He’s never been a network favorite. But people who say this is going to be a walk in the park for Pacquiao are crazy.”

Inside Cowboys Stadium on Thursday, Clottey leaned forward in the stands, his eyes fixed on the scoreboard that read “Pacquiao-Clottey, The Event.” Clottey had secured the fight he always wanted. For him, Mayweather-Pacquiao could wait.

Barrera sees win by Pacquiao
By NICK GIONGCO
March 13, 2010, 8:34pm

DALLAS, Texas — Marco Antonio Barrera is in town and he will be rooting for Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night against Joshua Clottey.

Not only is Barrera, one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever, cheering for the Filipino.

Barrera also told Manila-based reporters in a chance encounter that he sees Pacquiao winning the 12-round welterweight title fight on points.

Because Clottey is big and strong and is a legitimate welterweight, the Mexico City-based Barrera doesn’t see a knockout taking place although if it did, it would come in the late rounds.

“(Starting the) ninth (round),” Barrera told the scribes.

Barrera first met Pacquiao in Nov. 2003 in San Antonio where he suffered a devastating 11th round stoppage.

In their rematch four years later in Las Vegas, Pacquiao fashioned out a 12-round unanimous decision.

Another Mexican fighter, former world flyweight champion Jorge Arce, also of Mexico, was on hand as well and he predicted a Pacquiao win “by decision.”

Fans fear blackout may stop them from viewing Pacman-Clottey fight live on tv (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=264136)

COTABATO CITY, March 13(PNA) –Engineer Reynaldo Trasmontero and Veterinary Medicine Dr. Robert Malcontento, two of the thousands avid fans here of world’s pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, expressed fears that they will miss the fight live on television due to power outages in Mindanao on Sunday.

Trasmontero, an employee of city government, willing to do all to watch how Pacquiao would demolished former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight king Joshua Clottey of Ghana on Sunday, rushed to airline companies ticketing office here Saturday to secure tickets to Manila or Cebu just to watch the bout on wide screens or on TV without fear of power interruptions.

To his dismay, the two leading airline companies had the Cotabato-Manila flights fully booked.

Dr. Malcontento, on the other hand, has planned to proceed to Davao City, or Gen. Santos City, to witness the fight without worrying an outage would take place in the middle of the Pacquiao-Clottey fight.

But Davao and Gen. Santos are also subjected to power outages, they learned.

They are among the ever worried boxing aficionados here that the Pacman-Clottey bout will not be seen live on TV due to limited power supply.

“I have witnessed all previous world fights of the Pacman, missing his fight with Clottey is the last thing I will ever gift myself,” Transmontero said.

Malcontento agreed.

“If I have my way, there should be uninterrupted power supply during the scheduled fight,” Malcontento said.

As his family name simply means, Malcontento said he will not be content with watching the fight on a delayed basis.

“I hope Cotabato Light will not fail us,” he said, adding that “we will never complain if power interruption comes before the scheduled fight and after the fight.”

Cresente Ferolino, resident manager of Cotabato Light and Power Company, could not assure an uninterrupted power supply during Sunday’s Pacquiao-Clottey fight.

“But I tell you we have not experienced rotational service interruptions the past two days, hopefully all of us can watch the bout on television,” Ferolino said.

He said the power demand on Sundays is lower as compared to Monday-Saturday demand.

“We need cooperation on Sunday so power demand will not increase and create shortage,” Ferolino said.

“What we can do is help reduce power demand by delaying the use of washing machine, air condition units, forego ironing and electric pressing of clothes, shut off unnecessary lights, etc…so all of us can watch the fight,” he said, stressing this is voluntary.

Ferolino said the generation capacity using diesel-fed engine of Colight had improved, thus its franchise service area had “zero brown out” since Thursday.

Cotabato City Mayor Muslimin Sema said boxing fans, who have no cable connections can watch the fight at the City plaza where wide screens would be provided for free.

“This is our little contributions to our people, let’s all enjoy the fight,” Sema said in a statement.

In Midsayap, North Cotabato, Celestino Rapacon, provincial board member, was so worried that he thought of buying satellite dish and generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply while Pacquiao and Clottey meet in Dallas, Texas.

“It is not that easy and quick to acquire one,” he said. “Should worst come to worst, meaning blackout hit on Sunday, I will content myself with listening to live radio coverage with my battery operated transistor radio.”

The National Grid Corp., in a statement, said the power consumption in Mindanao during Sundays was lower.

Belinda Canlas, NGCP corporate communications officer, said electric cooperatives could manage power supply on their own if Mindanao grid supply were limited.

NGCP said it was in the hands of electric cooperatives to rotate power interruption and ensure power would be enough during the scheduled Pacquiao-Clottey fight.(PNA)

Round 1: Pacquiao, in red trunks contrasting Clottey’s satin red, ducked a left and went right to the body. He bobbed in his southpaw stance and unleashed a left that Clottey blocked. Clottey covering. He jabs, tries a right that misses. Pacquiao goes to Clottey's body. Pacquiao jabs, sneaks in a right. Pacquiao more active. Round to Pacquiao, 10-9.

Round 2: Pacquiao lands a hard left to the head, and big right to body. Insiders said that was his plan, to pound Clottey’s gut. He aims for head, then dips to the sides of Clottey. Clottey gets in a right to the body and left to Pacquiao's face. Clottey mockingly buckles his knees. Nice Clottey left to face. Clottey still covering, Pacquiao punching at head, a little in vain. Round to Pacquiao, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 20-18.

Round 3: Clottey jabs. Pacquiao scores with left, unleashes a wild left. Clottey trying to counter. He throws a right, Pacquiao counters with lefts, goes back to the body. Clottey lands a good left to the head. Clean right by Clottey, very nice. Pacquiao jabs, pounds body with right, gets Clottey on ropes. Clottey gets in a scoring combo. Pacquioao hammering on the body, Clottey squeezes in good right.Pacquiao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 30-27.

Round 4: Pacquiao throws right, pushes Clottey off him. Pacquiao to body. Clottey loves to cover face. Pacquiao targeting body, like, “cover this!” Then Clottey double-punched Pacquiao on sides, laughing. Ref separates them. Pacquiao corners Clottey on ropes, bringing roars. Clottey back in middle of ring. Pacquiao beating Clottey about the body. Clottey too inactive, Pacquiao urges him on. Pacquiao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 40-36.

Round 5: Pacquiao using feet to leverage positions. He shrugs off a Clottey jab. Quick right by Clottey lands. Nice jab by Clottey. Pacquiao has expended a lot of energy so far and is backing off a bit. Big lull in action. Clottey will have to increase this pace, unless he’s just satisfied with decision. Pacquiao lefts back Clottey to the ropes, and Pacquiao stays on him. No response from challenger. Pacqiuao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 50-45.

Round 6: Pacquiao jabs, backs off. Clottey blocks face. Clottey is working left jab-right combo, not often enough, though. Pacquiao gives nice assault, Clottey placing both gloves to top of his head, peering for an opening to counter. Pacquiao beats him back. Punch totals will be one-sided. Pacquiao batters Clottey on ropes. Nice Clottey jab at bell. Pacquiao averaging 98 punches to Clottey's 30. Pacquiao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 60-54.

Round 7: Clottey tries to work Pacquiao against the ropes to no avail. Pacquiao goes jab, jab, jab. Pacquiao punishes Clottey's body again. Clottey has to uncover to deal with attack. Manny has lump under his right eye. He’s the battering ram, though, body, body, head. Nice right by Clottey. Pacquiao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 70-63.

Round 8: Pacquiao’s punching advantage through seven rounds is 677-225. If Clottey went to the ‘I hope he gets fatigued” plan it’s a questionable endeavor. Pacquiao jab and left. Low blow by Clottey brings timeout and boos from crowd. Pacquiao likes to give a great show, but Clottey’s cover game makes that tough. Manny big right to body. Another low blow by Clottey bothers Pacquiao at bell. Clottey misfires on right. Pacquiao wins round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 80-72.

Joshua Clottey proved to be indestructible but that did not prevent Manny Pacquiao to pull-off a unanimous decision victory on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in their WBO welterweight title fight at the Dallas Cowboys Stdium in Arlington, Texas.

The three judges – Levi Martinez, Nelson Vazquez and Duane Ford – all scored in favor of the seven-time world division champion as Pacquiao successfully defended, for the first time, his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight strap that he won over Miguel Cotto. - GMANews.TV

Pacquiao dominates Clottey in front of 50,994 (http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ki-fightearly031310&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

ARLINGTON, Texas – Joshua Clottey may have been bigger, but that was his only edge on Saturday night. Manny Pacquiao clearly outworked Clottey, outpunching him four, five and even six to one at times in winning a wide decision before a standing room-only crowd of 50,994 at Cowboys Stadium.
Pacquiao punished Clottey with combinations to the body throughout in winning the unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight title and his status as the world’s finest boxer.

It was no contest as Clottey simply kept his guard high and rarely threw punches. According to CompuBox, Pacquiao landed 246 of 1,231 punches; Clottey connected on just 108 of 399.

Pacquiao took advantage by using his blazing hand speed to rip through Clottey’s gloves and land hard, punishing shots.

He made the former champion wince several times as he fired off hard combinations at Clottey’s midsection.

Despite the exhortations in the corner of trainer Lenny DeJesus, Clottey never opened up and fought aggressively. He was backed up all night and, except for an occasional shot, never did much to Pacquiao.

It was another virtuoso performance for the Filipino superstar who has won titles or has claimed the linear championship in seven different weight classes. Pacquiao is on a collision course with unbeaten rival Floyd Mayweather Jr., who fights Shane Mosley on May 1.

The Clottey team knew that they're not gonna triumph anyway so probably it's part of their plan for their guy to be overly defensive instead of being aggressive. Pacman will surely be much more offensive once Clottey put up an aggressive fight. You know it's better to lose by decision rather than being knocked out.

This was the first time i saw Pacman not super ripped.
The Cotto fight had a catch weight of 145 lbs this time its 147 lbs.

Was worried that Pacman would get tired and Clottey would get a lucky punch.
You can see Clottey is really strong - Pacman's head really snaps back when he gets hit. Pacman didn't do what he let Cotto do - There were times pacman let Cotto hit him in the body to see if he can take it.

Good thing Pacman was in great shape.
1200+ punches thrown - I can't even imagine how much shape you have to be to be able to do that. ^^

Congratulations, Pacman! ^_^!!!

I haven't seen the fight but I was happy to know that Pacman just won. Pacquiao winning is equivalent to millions of dollars being poured into Philippine economy again! Well, I just hope that most of the money will be invested or spent here in the Philippines though.

anyhow, can we now call Pacman "the invincible"? Looks like he has never lost a fight for half a decade now... ^_^!

Natawa din ako dito. This match is really a JOKE!!! I think it's for money all throughout. Clottey knew it all along he won't win this match, he was playing safe not to get KO. They probably put their money down in favor of Pacquiao so they can make money out of this crap. Atleast it's a good time for Roach and Pacquiao to challenge gayweather to fight manny he he

IMO, if Clottey had released more punches than he had, Manny would have been badly injured. he was clearly stronger and tougher than Manny, but got scared when he saw Manny's speed, he wouldn't dare open up to throw punches. even though he was able to take Manny's power, he knew he would still be taken out anytime if he was careless.
overall, it was a lousy fight, with both fighters trying to show off - Manny with his double-fisted punch to the ears, and with Joshua's air-kicks. I never felt tense throughout the fight, unlike the one against Barrera or Marquez.
undoubtedly, Manny was the superior fighter with his speed, angles and power, and would have won the fight with points if not a KO. Clottey had the bigger guns, but didn't have the guts to unload them - lucky for Manny.
thank goodness I did not subscribe to the PPV to see it. I'd have regretted paying for it. :cheers2:

Pacquiao marches on as true star of boxing
(philstar.com) Updated March 15, 2010 11:01 AM

ARLINGTON (AP) – The fight was long over and most of the biggest crowd to see a fight in the US in 17 years had found their way out of massive Cowboys Stadium. Manny Pacquiao was in the shower, where one member of his entourage surely was in charge of selecting his shampoo while another had the task of making sure the towels were just right.

Pacquiao had easily disposed of a timid Joshua Clottey, and now he had a concert to perform. He finally emerged in an argyle sweater that would have looked better on the golf course and sunglasses more suited for the beach, with the entourage swelling about him, each jockeying for position in case he could be the lucky one chosen to fluff Pacman's rice for him.

There was only a few minutes to talk about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his run for congress in the Philippines in May. The postfight party awaited, and once more the star was ready to perform.

"The first song I'm going to sing is "La Bamba,"' Pacquiao said.

It's a good time to be Manny Pacquiao, and Texas proved to be a good host to the hottest fighter around. Nearly 51,000 made their way into the edifice built by Jerry Jones to watch him fight Saturday night and few seemed to leave disappointed, even if Clottey's reluctance to mix it up deprived them of a spectacular fight.

The win was about as easy as they come, with Pacquiao capturing every round on one judge's scorecard and all but one on the other two. By the time they count all the pay-per-view receipts he'll probably head home at least $15 million richer, and he didn't have to put up with Mayweather's antics to make another huge payday.

The fight that never was may still happen, perhaps in November, perhaps at Cowboys Stadium. Pacquiao made it clear he still wants it, and both his trainer and promoter seem to want it even more badly than the fighter himself.

"We will crush him," trainer Freddie Roach said.

It wasn't an idle boast, and it wasn't a way to hype the fight because it doesn't need hyping. Before it fell apart over Mayweather's insistence on blood testing, the bout was supposed to have taken place Saturday night and likely would have been the richest ever in boxing.

But Mayweather must first now get past a fight of his own, a May 1 bout against Shane Mosley that may be his toughest yet. And promoter Bob Arum made it clear that there will be no negotiations this time around about any sort of blood testing no matter how much Mayweather might try to raise the point.

"That was a stupid mistake I made by playing Neville Chamberlain and negotiating this issue," Arum said, drawing an analogy that only a boxing promoter could. "You don't negotiate. You don't appease. Chamberlain negotiated with Hitler on Munich and look what happened."

History lesson aside, there clearly isn't any need for Pacquiao's camp to bend on the issue. Any thought that Mayweather diminished his popularity when he insinuated Pacquiao must be juiced to have won titles from 112 to 147 pounds evaporated when they opened the doors at Cowboys Stadium and throngs of people poured in hours early for the party.

And a party was what it was, despite Clottey's attempt to preserve his boxing future by spending long stretches of time in the ring holding his gloves in a peek-a-boo style to avoid getting hit. Pacquiao did the best he could to force the issue, throwing punch after punch after punch — more than 1,200 in all — but if a fighter goes into the ring just to survive the odds are good he will do just that.

Someone who managed to get a microphone at the postfight press conference congratulated Clottey for making it through 12 rounds, and asked him what his secret for success was.

"Manny Pacquiao is beating everybody," Clottey said. "He's knocking them out. I have to do what I can and I think I did my best."

Arum didn't seem to mind that he had just paid someone $2 million to go into a shell. This was a party, after all, and the fight was secondary.

"What was he supposed to do?" Arum said. "If he played offense he'd get knocked out."

This was a freebie for Pacquiao, and one he had probably earned. It's hard to blame him for having an opponent just trying to stay upright, not after what he did to Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto in his previous three fights.

This, apparently, is what it has come to with Pacman. No longer just content to beat fighters he's now a 145 3/4 pounds of sheer intimidation, kind of a junior Mike Tyson who takes on his business with a smile instead of a scowl.

He's so good that a very good and veteran practitioner of the sweet science decided that it was better to survive intact than go down in a blaze of glory. So good that there wouldn't be any question about his place on boxing's hierarchy if there wasn't this annoyance named Floyd Mayweather.

So good that the only worry in his camp is that he will actually win a seat in congress back home and not fight anymore.

"He's probably going to win the election," Arum said. "But that's all right because if their congress is anything like ours, they don't do anything anyway."

The glow of his latest win had even his tough guy trainer speaking fondly about the fighter he has helped transform a tough sport.

"I'm just happy to be a part of Manny Pacquiao's life," Roach said.

He's not alone. Just ask the guy lucky enough to be chosen to fluff his rice. – Tim Dahlberg, AP Sports Columnist

Pacquiao's $12-M to boost standing in Forbes' list

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 03/15/2010 4:03 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines' "People's Champ" Manny Pacquiao's latest victory over Joshua Clottey of Ghana also means another windfall for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion.

In 2009, Pacquiao was listed as one of the world's best-paid athletes by Forbes Magazine. (Read: Pacquiao debuts in Forbes' highest-paid athletes list)

He ranked sixth, with estimated earnings of US$40 million, around P1.9 billion, from June 2008 to June 2009.

The Pacman earned more than tennis superstar Roger Federer and Cleveland Cavaliers (former Phoenix Suns) center Shaquille O'Neal, who earned US$33 million each in the same period.

For the Clottey fight, Pacquiao had a guaranteed purse of US$12 million.

He also stands to earn through pay-per-view sales, ticket sales, gate receipts, merchandise and television rights.

It was only last year when Pacquiao joined sports icons Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in “The World's Highest-Paid Athletes” list of Forbes Magazine.

“The Pacman” tied for the sixth spot along with 2009 NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James and golfer Phil Mickelson. They raked in $40 million last year.

Last year's entry on Forbes.com states that Pacquiao “hogged the boxing spotlight over the past year with victories in two blockbuster fights,” pertaining to his 8th round TKO win over Oscar de la Hoya in December and 2nd round KO of Ricky Hatton in May.

“The People’s Champ” earlier debuted in the “Forbes Celebrity 100” topped by Angelina Jolie. The list named the 100 most powerful celebrities in the world.

Lording over the world’s highest-paid athletes list in 2009 was Tiger Woods with $110 million.

Sharing the list’s second spot were Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Kimi Raikkonen with $45 million.

David Beckham, meantime, clinched the No. 5 spot with $42 million.

Coming in at No. 9 was motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi with $35 million. In 10th place with $34 million was Nascar race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.. -- with a report from ANC

Maybe Clottey was actually punching more during the Cotto fight compared to the pacman fight. If Clottey had thrown more punches Pacman would have taken advantage of it and would have found an opening. Clottey knew that.

Some people view it as boring fight and say Clottey just showed up for a big pay check.
All I can say is... Look at Pacman's face at the end of the fight. When he hits Pacman you can really see his head snap back. I was tense the whole time because I could see that Pacman was breathing deeper as each round passes by. He didn't breath that hard during the Cotto fight. I was concerned that if Pacman got tired and Clottey gets a lucky punch - It could have been bad.

Pacman had to keep the pressure. Its not that Clottey didn't want to throw the punches. Pacman made him not throw punches by not giving him a chance to throw them.

1,231 punches thrown.
Incredible.
