Nick in Atlanta September 11th, 2004, 04:43 AM De Snor, great photos. Obviously I've seen tons of Atlanta photos but you showed me some great new angles. You really show how Atlanta is a very green city. If you get up too high its hard to believe that the metropolitan population is over 4 million people.
9/10 because of the innovative photography.
DamienK September 12th, 2004, 12:45 PM 7.5/10. Nice variation of architectural styles.
Kaneda September 12th, 2004, 02:11 PM 8/10 .. Has some nice buildings, but isent very dense.
james2390 September 12th, 2004, 04:35 PM 10/10. I love Atlanta's post modern architecture.
ROYU September 14th, 2004, 02:16 AM I love Atlanta , the only thing it needs is more density 8.5
kikyurazz September 14th, 2004, 03:26 AM 8/10 in some cases it looks all nice and compact. In other areas it looks very spread out, but I like the architecture.
Atlanta rocks :righton: :gunz:
Nick in Atlanta September 15th, 2004, 04:43 AM DeSnor, looking at your beautiful photos again I noticed that what really makes them all unique is that you have greenery (ie, grass, trees, etc) in the foreground and you place the buildings in the top of the picture. Really nice work!!
Icanseeformiles September 17th, 2004, 09:02 AM pleasantly suprised. 8/10
Þróndeimr September 17th, 2004, 11:40 AM Nice city....8/10

Nick in Atlanta September 24th, 2004, 05:41 AM Too much suburban sprawl: 6/10
Citizen, how can you see suburban sprawl in the pictures that De Snor posted? The purpose of "Rate Our Skylines" is to give a score for the pictures displayed, not to advance your agenda against a city's other issues. :)
GetOnDaTrain October 28th, 2004, 09:33 PM 9/10. Second after Houston, Atlanta has a pretty Intown skyline, also when well lit at night.
Monkey October 31st, 2004, 10:18 PM Some nice buildings with a good mixture of styles, and plenty of surrounding greenery.
I'm actually quite surprised - I heard some very negative comments about Atlanta from some people on here recently, but when I actually see these pictures for myself I really like it. :)
8.5
SeeMacau November 2nd, 2004, 08:14 AM This is the kind of skyline i like. Tall buildings but not dense and makes it looks powerful !!
9/10
goschio November 2nd, 2004, 11:20 AM I like it.
Reminds me of Frankfurt!
9/10
elliot November 3rd, 2004, 01:05 AM I gave it a 4 because it photographs well with the right lens.
But 4 or 5 talls don't add up to a great skyline. This aerial shows just how disappointing this over-rated skyline is. More like Buffalo than NYC.

mike_p November 3rd, 2004, 10:18 PM The last pic looks like 2 skylines
nice tall buildings

i_am_hydrogen December 9th, 2004, 03:28 PM 6/10 ... I've driven through ATL a few times. It has some nice post-modern architecture, but the skyline is just too loose.
kcMO4eva January 22nd, 2005, 08:39 AM Atlanta is a great city. One of my favorites 9.5
MIMICA January 22nd, 2005, 08:23 PM atlanta seems to be a very strange city to me. first of all, i personally love the way that those new modern buildings come together into a nice little skyline, but really...the size of the city and it's skyline don't match at all! i'd expect alot more from atlanta, rather than just that dinky little skyline for it. i'm not saying the skyline is bad, i'm saying it doesn't match the city.
final vote - 7/10 :)
hauntedheadnc January 23rd, 2005, 12:04 AM The architecture is a treat, and so is the green setting, which I especially love. The only thing that keeps me from giving Atlanta a 10 is the fact that its skyline is a little too spread out. Think of how magnificent it would be if all the skyscrapers were shoulder-to-shoulder downtown!
But on the other hand, think of how great it will look when skyscraper developments fill in the space between downtown and Midtown! I know that there's a lot of activity inside the Perimeter of Atlanta these days.
In the meantime, though... 9.5.
Atlman1 January 28th, 2005, 09:25 PM Atlanta has an amazing skyline. There are so many new buildings under construction in the downtown and midtown areas. The next few years Atlanta's skyline will be unbelievable because of all the new buildings. Of the cities I have lived in, Atlanta is the best place to see new buildings being built. They build skyscapers like it is nothing.
DarkFenX January 28th, 2005, 09:44 PM Nice. 8/10
SkyHigh529 January 29th, 2005, 08:25 AM I give it a 10.
I don't understand who in the world would rate Atlanta's skyline below 3... I love the city, but even if I were from a million miles away and hated Atlanta I couldn't rate the skyline below a 7. Truthfully, I'd guess that those who rated it 3 and below are probably more jealous, or from cities that Atlanta is routinely competing against on these boards.
Even so, Atlanta still averages out to one of the top American cities in the Rank Cities section.
IRAZU January 29th, 2005, 08:36 AM I give it a 10.

100% Agree!
SkyHigh529 January 29th, 2005, 08:40 AM Glad I'm not alone! :) And to be honest, I think most of the cities on this board that are trully represented are so because they have pretty decent skylines. I couldn't rate most of them below a 5. You really have to work at it to get below a 3, at least when I rate (see El Paso, Texas).

Atlman1 January 30th, 2005, 12:36 AM Atlanta does have one of the best skylines in the country. The city also lights up a lot better than most other cities. People who vote Atlanta below an 8 are jealous because they know there city sucks when it comes to their own skyline! People are just jealous of Atlanta's great progress and beautiful skyline, simple as that!
Qualtagh January 30th, 2005, 01:42 AM Pretty nice. Since I'm wearing a licenced Coca-Cola t-shirt, the most known Atlantic company, I give that 7.5.

i give it a 9.5; if only Buckhead and Sandy Springs were mixed into downtown and midtown, i'd give it a 10. it's great, it's just in bad need of some adequate, densifying filler.

SkyHigh529 January 30th, 2005, 05:51 AM Man, that last pic of Atlanta at night is awesome. Yes, the city lights up better than most. I'm sure there is plenty of low voting going on from certain other cities, but thats how it works I guess.
MuddyZehbra32 January 30th, 2005, 06:09 AM Wow its very spread out. What is the name of the building in the very center of the 2 sets of skyscrapers? i like it
edit: never mind about the building i didin't bother to look at that last set of pics.
mic January 30th, 2005, 01:32 PM Looks like one big suburb with no substance downtown, just a few towers here and there in one long stretch-and that qualifies as a city-I dont think so...
4
I mean really look at it-be truthful now-that is barely a 6 let alone 10
It isn't dense, the quality of towers is minimal and there seems to be no inner city of dense apartment/row house living with vibrant street culture, just one big office park with not too much going on. No tree lined avenues, no alfresco dining, nothing to distiguish it as nice/special/interesting/vibrant. Even though this arial does not show the entire city, the rest is just the same, thin, lacking street density from older established buildings, which to me look like they don't even exsit.
http://www.upside-down.ca/sdphotos/ugh-atlanta.jpg
LSyd January 31st, 2005, 02:02 AM heh, some of these "i hate it, blahblahblah" or "sucks compared to my great city" comments are funny. so hypocritical and ignorant...
here's an interesting shot with downtown, midtown and buckhead in it. it looks a bit dated though.

mic January 31st, 2005, 02:26 AM I don't hate Atlanta, I find it unusual that a city of over 4 million in metro has such a small skyline thats all, It seems long narrow and lacking density. But my main agrument is more about what existed there before the skyscrapers-was this the original city centre. Where are the old city buildings, the old apartment complexes and old offices and churches. This city seems to lack real solidity in older buildings.
I*LOVE*NY January 31st, 2005, 03:50 AM 8/10
mic January 31st, 2005, 04:07 AM So let me get this straight people are giving Atlanta 8 , 9 and 10 and cities like Brisbane Australia are getting 6, 7 and 8. I'm not even from Brisbane and I see the great injustice
http://tinypic.com/dxqx5
SkyHigh529 January 31st, 2005, 06:02 AM Mic, that's a beautiful picture of Brisbane and I'd give it a 10. If you haven't yet, check out my comments on Sydney (in the Sydney section), made before you made your point about Brisbane. Obviously people who rate that low must be from places that compete with it or are just plain jealous of it. I like Melbourne, too btw.
However, Atlanta is a great city that obviously does not photograph well from the air. Somes do, somes don't. But from more angled shots and ground level shots, its absolutely beautiful, with plenty of trees, skyscrapers, and things to do. It may not meet your strict definition of what is and isn't urban, but I bet if you let me show you the city sometime you'd change your mind.
I don't claim its the greatest city in the world or even the US, but I haven't found anywhere that rivals its energy and go getter spirit. What it is now, and the personality it has, will combine to make for one heck of a city in the future.
SkyHigh529 January 31st, 2005, 06:16 AM I need to buy a camera and go out and post some new, updated photo's of Atlanta. Anybody got some new ones they can post? Like with Atlantic Station in there and stuff?

a lot of the really old stuff got burned in 1865 during the Civil War.
did you go look at my thread? there's plenty of older buildings there, including some of cotton mills converted into apartments.
and i don't know how you could call Atlanta's talls bland...it's post-modern greatness.

joshgekko January 31st, 2005, 10:51 PM 8/10. After symphony center tower and various other midtown towers are completed, atlanta's skyline will def look a lot better. If only they could clean up downtown a bit so companies will start moving in again.
THT90 February 1st, 2005, 04:09 AM atlanta seems very nice, but for some reason, i don't really like the skyline. for a city of that size, i would expect something more "impressive" with such a city.
final vote - 9 :)
KulasKusgan February 26th, 2005, 05:01 PM nice typical american city.
Talisker February 26th, 2005, 09:50 PM It's better than a typical american city. This is a postmodern masterpiece. I really can't think of a more high quality skyline in the world, even if it is relatively small compared with NYC or Chicago etc. One Atlantic centre is just perfect. 10/10
JDRS February 26th, 2005, 10:34 PM Some nice different styles of buildings and some tall scrapers. It's definetely has many American style skyscrapers too. Perhaps not dense enough and the skyline could be more compact too. From one pic it looks as though there are two main skyline parts and I think it would be good to fill in between these with some taller scrapers to focus the skyline. Overall I like it. 8/10
SkyHigh529 February 27th, 2005, 12:12 AM ^JDRS, yes, that is one of the main complaints many people who do not live in Atlanta have.... that the skyline is too "spread out." While I don't see it that way, I do agree with you that the area between those "two main skylines" should be field in, and as we speak there is a lot of construction going on to do just that.
As you said, there are two skylines, one being downtown and the other being midtown. So, its not really spread out, so much as it is two seperate skylines close enough to be included in one picture. Eventually, they will connect. Thank you for the compliments and fair rating though! :)
on the other hand....
nice typical american city.
Hmm, thanks... nice typical comment by someone who knows absolutely nothing about American cities.
Stratosphere 2020 February 27th, 2005, 12:50 AM I like Atlanta´s skyline alot been there 6 times from Europe and the pictures really do not show the impressiveness of the city.
What I like about Altanta´s skyline
1. It has lots of great looking towers and nice diverse architecture.
2. Skyline looks different from every angle. It looks spread out in one angle and dense in the other.
3. Altanta´s skyline portrait some sort of power.
4. Skyline is very well lit at night.
5. Skyline has different shapes of towers, crowns, boxes and so on.
What I do not like of Atlanta´s skyline.
1. Lack of density in certain spots.
2. Mini Skylines all over. This should not be a problem, but could you imagine if all those highrises in Vinings, Buckhead and Perimeter were cocentrated in Midtown and Downtown alone now that would make Atlanta more impressive.
3. Very tall parking garages they should work on underground parking garages.
Atlanta has great potential in having one of the most beautiful and impressive skylines in the World if it does more density and keeps its high standard of architecture.
All in all I give Atlanta an 8 of 10.

I agree, with the amount of highrises under construction Atlanta´s skyline will change dramatically in the next few years. Many do not see the amount of projects going on in the city, just take a look in the Southern forum section. By 2025 I think you will really see a very dense city core from downtown all the way to Buckhead and all that thanks to condo´s.
The symphony tower that is under construction is a stunning modern masterpiece and compliments the skyline.

SkyHigh529 March 21st, 2005, 08:39 AM I moved to Atlanta from Texas a few years ago. I love Atlanta for its energy, vibrancy, diversity, and variety of architecture. Atlanta gets a lot of bad rap for having too much sprawl, traffic, and lack of walking space. People who are not from here tend to focus on those things and forget what attracted so many people hear througout the 90's and even now. People vote with their feet, and chose to come to Atlanta because it offered opportunity and a great quality of life.
On the sprawl side, Atlanta definetly has its challenges, but the saying "you can't judge someone out of their time" in a way applies very much to Atlanta. It was a boomtown during a time when the freeway and the car were the subway and the train. That coupled with plenty of open space made it seem illogical to develop with high density you might find in places on the water or around mountains. If Atlanta had boomed earlier then its transportation patterns would have more closely followed the New Yorks and Londons.
However, Atlanta has now created a new form of geographicals boundary, which is sprawl and traffic. Already the city's development patterns are changing quickly for the better, as many can see with the proposed beltline and the many new urbanist construction projects like Atlantic Station. In the years to come Atlanta these things will become the norm, at least within the city, and Atlanta will turn out to be one of the greats.
So for all of Atlanta's problems, percieved or real, I encourage people to keep track of Atlanta and to visit this place and see it not only for what it is or has done, but for its potential and what it will someday be.
That is why I love Atlanta, and why this lover of cities may move around, but will always end back up in Atlanta. Thanks for listening! :)

Thanx for clearing the ignorant air, hometown brethren! Don't think I could've said it any better. I've been around the block a
few times myself, and I can honestly say there is no city quite like
Atlanta. It most certainly isn't a city one can put a finger on. Too
bad most outsiders are too deaf, dumb, or blind to realize this. ;)

ATLANTA April 4th, 2005, 07:06 AM Atlanta has been open to critics ever since they were trying to decide what to name the city, just know that its the fastest growing metropolis in the United States and the largest one without a seaport. Atlanta was burned down during the civil war and rose from its own ashes to become the economic and center of government of the southern United States. No other city in the world has achieved such a feat. Besides, alot of New York's and Shanghai's architecture was designed my Georgia Tech grads here in Atlanta, before you critisize the city of Atlanta, you better check your own.

That's hearsay until you show facts stating you're correct.
Neither of you is right or wrong at the moment, so put up or shut up.

D/FW is the most populous landlocked metro in the US.
Jaybird April 11th, 2005, 12:05 AM 9/10. This skyline is spread out, but huge, and it looks gothic-styled too and modern as well. Very impressive for a city of its size, but suitable for its metro.

Correction- Westin meant Atlanta being the largest metro. of
a single city without a seaport. Dallas and Ft. Worth are two
separate cities sharing the same metro. So in a sense he was
correct, depending on how you look at it.(Yeah, I'm cosignin'!)
LSyd April 15th, 2005, 06:33 PM it's densifying all right...still some stuff to do, but i love that it's a "skyline," with several pinnacles, and not just a "cluster." it's so long and lovely...

Nouvellecosse June 4th, 2005, 05:17 PM atlanta seems very nice, but for some reason, i don't really like the skyline. for a city of that size, i would expect something more "impressive" with such a city.
final vote - 9 :)
More impressive? Many cities in Atlanta's size range including Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal can't boast such an impossing skyline. All of its tallest are in the 40-70s range. I happen to like that the buildings are spread apart since it allows each to be seen better. Most major skyscraper cities have alot a noteable buildings that are hidden behind other buildings and can only be seen in certain places. I also like that there aren't any older messier looking highrises to detract from Atlanta's sleek, futuristic appeal. These three things (hight, spacing, and sleekness) combine to give Atlanta one of the world's most unique landscapes, and uniqueness is what makes a skyline (and a place) great. Hope to visit someday.
ironchapman June 8th, 2005, 07:26 AM ^Several cities with in 100,000 people of ATL's population don't have nearly this big of a skyline.
10/10
Hometown Pride, and also it IS a nice looking skyline.
I love the varying architectural styles.
One reason all the 'scrapers maybe on P'tree Street and some streets closeby is because the buildings have nothing else to group on, no body of water big or pretty enough (for example). Most, if not all, cities located on a body of water utilize this body as a hub for the skyline (ex. Miami, Seattle, Chicago, Memphis). Even some cities on a minor river like Nashville's on the Cumberland...the Chattahoochee is too small for even this.
I wish the skyline was a little denser...not clustered, but just a little more compact while still pread out along Peachtree (in other words, not as spread out). It does appear to have a huge skyline, though.

ironchapman June 25th, 2005, 06:45 AM It's very long, isn't it? That's what i like about it, even if it isn't that dense.
EdZed June 25th, 2005, 08:17 AM I like it, especially that one cylindrical tower, could be a little denser.

Jose Luis June 25th, 2005, 06:46 PM Atlanta is beautiful.
40748246 June 28th, 2005, 09:08 AM It looks like the downtown buildings only go down one main drag which make it too spread out. Alot of the tall buildings look ugly.
Rail Claimore June 28th, 2005, 09:23 AM 9/10.
Overall, I like Atlanta, and know the metro better than any other major metro in the US, including Chicago... that's because I've lived 3-4 hours from it most of my life (first 3.5 hours from its sprawl, now 2.5 hours) and have friends who live there, and probably always will (everyone in the southeast outside of Florida heads for Atlanta just like those in the Midwest who go for Chicago).
Atlanta has one of the most beautiful skylines and some of the most beautiful skyscraper architecture in the US if not the world. Few buildings even in the burbs look very bland unlike what you find in Dallas, Houston, Chicago, and a bunch of other cities in the US. Atlanta has some of the most beautiful neighborhoods you will find anywhere in the South and its spaghetti bowl of streets makes for an interesting pattern of development and a VERY interesting city to explore... by car though. Atlanta is sprawled to hell and back, and it's one of the things I do not like about that. However, Atlanta is one of those American cities that is always changing and always on the move. What the city will look like 15-20 years from now is really anyone's guess, and Atlanta is very unpredictable. That's one of the things I like about it.
Chris121091 July 17th, 2005, 03:45 PM Atlanta's streets are not arranged in the way that towers can be built as dense as say New York. BUT also think of what good this is Most towers that were built in New York and CHicago a long time ago that still remain are ugly, unimaginative, and boxy. Now Major cities in America are booming and architects are strutting their stuff; You can see that Atlanta has room to build a lot more spectacular towers.

No Mercy October 2nd, 2005, 12:06 AM Strong, bleh, outline, ok. Atlanta's architectural bases is pretty ground smoothing, and the downtown core is pretty good. The dome is really ugly designed, seriously. But the rest is alright. 8/10

atlantaGH May 6th, 2006, 08:41 AM Nice shots. The metro population fluxes depending on how many counties you include in it. I think officially it hovers around 4.1 million metro, but if you include some of the outlying counties it increases to just over 5.
I think the last stat I heard was that Atlanta has averaged a minimum of 52,000 new residents in the metro area every single year since 1979, with a maximum of 96,000 people moving here in one year shortly after the 1996 Olympics.

Atlanta definitely has an underated skyline. Most pictures that I've seen on the forums don't do the city's skyline justice. The Atlanta skyline is linear but very impressive in person...Driving north on interstate 75/85 blew my mind the first time I saw the skyline in person a few years ago...Atlanta's architecture makes it stand apart from other cities {Houston, Dallas, Miami}. In my opinion, in about 10 years to 15 Atlanta could very well have the 3rd,4th, or 5th best skyline in the country.

The density is coming very fast. Withing the next 5 years Atlanta's skyline will look totally different than what it does today.

I just find it so funny how you give every American city an extremely low score and you give little cities with hardly any skyline in Mexico perfect 10s. you gave NYC a 5!!! Very bias! Anyway, I love atlanta's skyline. It's very unique. I love all of the BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING BUILDINGS they have.

lammius February 13th, 2007, 05:35 AM From the air I'd say 8
From the street I'd say quite a bit less.
rudeboie February 13th, 2007, 06:08 AM I'd give it an 8. Wife's family lives there so I fly down there from Toronto every cpl of months or so. Skyline looks great from a distance, but once you get downtown you realize that ATL lacks urban life. The city needs to get ppl moving downtown and to slow/limit suburban sprawl.

But not nearly as ugly a disgrace as the bitterness of city-envy proudly displayed above. You should bottle that emotion up inside where it can fester quietly...or maybe you could even think about letting it go...

<^>. How about Brazilia? A city based on cars..no sidewalks. Yeah you should be real proud of yourselves. Oh btw. I love it that atleast our cities have a distinct uniqueness to each of them. Meanwhile aside from Sao Paulo and Rio you can't tell the difference from one Brazilian city to the next.

But i like the nightshots. You should check out Honolulu, its different from the typical American cities and looks very much like South American/Asian cities. Unlike many cities you see here that have like 6-12 buildings, Honolulu has around 600-800+ buildings all of which are 380-436 feet range. Quit stereo typing that all American city looks the same (I'm a huge fan of Brazilian cities btw).

Honolulu doesn't even pretend to have a skyline comparable with the size or architectural diversity of Atlanta. Even in photographs it's easy to tell the difference...but Miss Honolulu 2007 is just doing her job, spreading world peace and misinformation.
The super tall buildings located Dowtown and in Midtown are somewhat spread out, but there are low and mid-rise buildings between them...so it's not like there are sparsely placed buildings with nothing around them. When you see a photo of the skyline, you often can't see the 15 - 30 story buildings that fill in the gaps so many forumers love to talk about. The tree cover also prevents people from seeing the infill buildings. Only residents of Atlanta or people who have been to the city and are familiar with it would know...anyone else making a statement about the sparse skyline is just jumping on a popular but false bandwagon. Take a look at some of the photos that allow you to see a more "real" representation of the city, like some of the aerials in this thread.

You gotta be kidding me. That piece of shit you call Melbourne didn't even stand a chance. If anything Atlanta stole the games from Athens. But guess what it didn't. Athen's (the runner up) didn't have the infrastructure needed to host the games so naturally the IOC went with the city that had what it takes to host an Olympics. Which was Atlanta. Not a stellar Olympics but this city definately fucking deserved it so you can just shut your damn mouth.
