View Full Version : #Cape Town Ports Masterplan
Mo Rush March 1st, 2011, 04:34 PM 2011 Western Cape Budget Speech: Alan Winde
Finally, in conjunction with local authorities and Transnet, we are formulating a 30-year plan to redevelop the port of Cape Town.
Our ports – Cape Town and Saldanha Bay – are among South Africa’s most important. 92 per cent of the country’s fish, 76 per cent of its bananas and over 90 per cent of its fruit juices go through them, into Africa and the world.
Trade has always been the lifeblood of our economy, and this project will bring our logistical capacity into the 21st century. Furthermore, it will enable us to secure labour intensive, multi-million rand contracts for the repair of West African oil and gas vessels, opening opportunities for many more jobseekers in our province.
Mo Rush March 1st, 2011, 04:45 PM The development of the port precinct
The development of the port precinct in Cape Town, and the realisation of economic multipliers that this will bring, is currently being held back
by a lack of influence and input on the part of the key local players. This is hampering especially the future development of the oil and gas sector, the boat-building sector, improvements to the port’s logistical capacities and performance, including back-of-port transport matters, and other local initiatives.
The PGWC and the City of Cape Town will, in conjunction with a coalition of interested local players, formulate a master plan for the
development of the port precinct to provide a basis for engagement with the national players who are the critical to development in this area
Mo Rush September 6th, 2011, 11:11 AM The Provincial Government of the Western Cape & The City of Cape Town in conjunction with Trasnet and other stakeholders will seek the following reports;
• A Status Quo Report for the Port of Cape Town Precinct.
• An agreed Vision and Development Strategy for the Port of Cape Town Precinct.
• A 1st Phase Implementation Plan for the Port of Cape Town Precinct.
In broad terms, the project will encompass the following phases:
• Project initiation, where the services of individuals and! or teams are secured and project institutional arrangements established.
• Status quo analysis, where the current situation, challenges and opportunities associated with the Port of Cape Town is uncovered and analysed.
• Visioning, where a common high-level future for the Port of Cape Town is explored (with the status quo report as a "shared" information base).
• Development strategy, where options to attain the vision as well as critical implementation actions are developed.
Mo Rush September 6th, 2011, 11:12 AM The future of Cape Town's Port has significant implications for the future of the
Culemborg and Belcon sites in Cape Town - strategically located sites with significant
development potential.
Transnet have a parallel initiative underway to prepare a Development Framework for Culemborg which is in the scenario planning stage. To allow for appropriate planning, there also needs to be a clear complementary vision and growth strategy between the Cape Town and Saldanha Ports, in addition to the work to be done as part of the Port Precinct Project, Transnet have stUdies underway which will also inform this.

Would this mean that Culemborg might after all be used as a transport yard again, rather than be developed?
Mo Rush September 6th, 2011, 05:23 PM No it means Transnet are conducting a "study" for the 12 time in terms of the future of the site and broader development of the Port Area.
