Soon the Gardiner will look burried without the huge cost to tax payers.

At least it looks like it'll have retail. But for the most part, it's a bore.

Soon the highway will be blocked from view downtown. I love it. And if the East Donlands go ahead as planned we won't be able to see it from the Don River to the Ex.

there was talk of it b4...i dont think it would be that soon either but still when it does happen its gonna be close

There's been talk about it since forever ago. Putting it underground, tearing it up, covering it up, etc. etc. It's not going to happen though, not for a while at least. The infrastructure and economics can't keep up with the plans. Instead we're surrounding them by buildings.

The Gardiner is going to be a hell of a canyon in 5 years.

February 21st, 2012, 05:45 PM
I suppose if it is completely enclosed as a canyon then there would be no point burying it!

MattToronto
February 21st, 2012, 05:47 PM
There's still the issue of the ghastly underside that tourists have to see.

Taller, Better
February 21st, 2012, 05:52 PM
That never seems to stop tourists from visiting other cities with elevated expressways and there are plenty of them. To make the five seconds a tourist might spend under the Gardiner more pleasant, we can come up with ways to spruce it up! Ways that will cost less than two digit billion dollar pricetags!

MattToronto
February 21st, 2012, 05:56 PM
It's true. I think we need to re-examine Lakeshore and how the underside is treated. There is truly a lot of potential.

I don't know about that. I'd still want the Gardiner buried, and normal city streets and blocks at grade. I'd gladly pay more taxes to get it done.

February 22nd, 2012, 05:32 PM
And I want a solid gold toilet, sink and bathtub set but that isn't likely to happen until I acquire the funds. :) Raised expressways don't just bury themselves magically. However, it is true that internet dollars are abundant so we can take any theoretical stance we like as long as we don't personally have to foot the bill.

I clearly stated that I'd be willing to pay more taxes to get it done. That's putting my money where my mouth is, not magic or internet dollars like you suggest.

Taller, Better
February 23rd, 2012, 07:35 PM
^^ That is kind and generous of you. I, on the other hand, do not want my taxes doubled for a vanity project like this. There are SO many more areas I would want my money spent that are far more important to us.

But, this is the internet so a person may ask why would I care about theoretical bills for theoretical projects? The "correct" response in Toronto is to call for the burying of the Gardiner. Just Do It. The "incorrect" stance is to raise questions about the funding, and to point out that there are MANY genuine infrastructure projects that should be addressed first. I guess the answer is that I have never felt hostage to propping up local truisms about our city! :)

isaidso
February 24th, 2012, 12:11 AM
Well we differ greatly in how we perceive this project. I consider it an investment in our city, not some vanity project.

valantino

The only return in spending $10 billion to bury the Gardiner is city beautification. That's the definition of vanity.

isaidso
February 24th, 2012, 01:27 PM
You're fooling yourself if you think things like pedestrian friendly streets, greenery, clean air, and overall livability don't have a huge effect on the ability of cities to attract talent and business. Why do you think the top business talent in Toronto is demanding to be downtown instead of industrial parks in Missisissauga or North York?

It's far too simplistic to view this as a vanity project.

+1

Vanity project of the highest order, tarted up as a civic necessity. On top of all that, we lose our amazing view of the city as we drive in from
the airport. Who here does not enjoy that view? Who here actually enjoys driving through one of those long, dark underground tunnels? I'm mildly
creeped out every time I do that tunnel just outside of downtown Montreal, as I always wonder what would happen if a fuel truck crashed. They are
"ventilated", but is that limited ventilation enough to cope with a big explosion?

Just imagine by 2015, when the Panam Athletes are taken by bus to their Athletes village through the Canyon in Gardner Expressway. What an amazing view they will enjoy of Toronto :)

^^ If all goes as planned then they'll be taking a train to Union from Pearson instead. Though that is beginning to look more and more unlikely.

It's like a guy in black suit, white shirt wearing a bright red, green , blue polka dotted tie. It doesn't look good to me.
