View Full Version : The tallest Telecoms Exchange in the world!
redstone September 12th, 2004, 06:10 AM City Telecoms Centre - Singapore
http://www.meinhardt.com.au/media/userimages/imageB3292910732.jpg
The project comprises 200m tall high-tech telephone exchange housing the nerve centre of Singapore's telecommunication - known to be the tallest Telecommunication Exchange in the world.
The building with a high aspect ratio depends entirely, for its stability and lateral forces, on the 4 secular service cores - one at each corner and a lift core at each end. The reinforced concrete structure had up to 200 thick cruciform steel section inserted in each column to match the architectural limitations on column size and to maximize usable floor space.
Highly sophisticated MEP services, especially the fire protection system, were incorporated to meet the telecom requirements for sensitive equipment areas.
Meinhardt provided integrated Structural and MEP engineering services.
RafflesCity September 12th, 2004, 08:59 AM Never really liked it - looks ugly and too metallic and inhospitable -_-
DamienK September 12th, 2004, 10:02 AM The building is listed as being 177 m tall at emporis.com. I saw this tower when I was in Singapore, but I didn't take a picture of it. It's by the same architect as the OUB Centre and UOB Plaza.
babystan03 September 12th, 2004, 11:27 AM Quite "normal" I say.....not very outstanding......
redstone September 12th, 2004, 11:47 AM Many people think it is an office building.
heirloom September 12th, 2004, 02:22 PM oh... it's got no offices in it?? whats in the building?? nothing but telecom equipment?!
RafflesCity September 12th, 2004, 04:18 PM Definitely it has offices in it - my friend worked there part time before!

Yeah, but I am kinda wondering which source is correct.....the original 177m in emporis, or the 200m claimed by the engineering company behind it!
Anyway, I cant say I hate it. In fact, I like how it contrasts so niely with the OCBC.....I even think OCBC will look more horrendous without this complete opposite rite beside it!
Trances September 13th, 2004, 01:12 AM did not realise it was not an office block by looking at it
huaiwei September 13th, 2004, 06:09 AM I am pretty sure there are still some offices in it, although the facade makes me wonder....
where are the windows?? :?
eyetoeye September 13th, 2004, 08:20 AM Looks okay to me. In fact, i think it's quite nice. Then again, i like almost anything so... haha...
It'd be really weird if the whole thing had no offices right? I mean, it is kind'a big....
redstone September 13th, 2004, 09:04 AM There are windows. But they're very small, and most are blocked behind by something that looks like metal plates?
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/2/9swisssing4.jpg
See?
Anyway, being not an office building, neither is it a residential tower, I don't think it needs big windows.
I still wonder what on earth it is.I've heard it is something like a giant warehouse, for storage of telecoms equipment. Now I hear it is a telecoms exchange. :?
heirloom September 13th, 2004, 12:00 PM well i like it! its footprint is actually quite small
benny1973 September 13th, 2004, 01:36 PM According my data records, reliable source from Mar500, the height is to 177m (rooftop) and 200m to telecom structure on top and is about 1m shorter than the nearby OCBC Centre. Anyone have a pic to show the height level? :)
redstone September 13th, 2004, 01:39 PM Both buildings are so alike.
Anyone know what is it used for actually?
huaiwei September 13th, 2004, 01:49 PM According my data records, reliable source from Mar500, the height is to 177m (rooftop) and 200m to telecom structure on top and is about 1m shorter than the nearby OCBC Centre. Anyone have a pic to show the height level? :)
Telecoms structure? How come I have never been able to see what is on top of the building!
Trances September 13th, 2004, 01:53 PM seems to be flat top in all images ?
huaiwei September 13th, 2004, 02:18 PM Yeah....unless its that tiny thing up there?:
http://www.sky.s64.pl/home/W/Sing2/s00.jpg
It dosent look like the total height will reach 200m thou?

Trances September 13th, 2004, 06:14 PM only a small feature not enough to make the heigh diff mentioned 23m meters ( is it )

I've really never noticed that thing up there before! Will keep a lookout for it the next time
redstone September 14th, 2004, 04:28 PM If you pass by, look out for the lobby.
heirloom September 14th, 2004, 05:56 PM i passed by and saw that it was a singtel shop. a few years ago though.
RafflesCity September 15th, 2004, 01:54 PM yah whats unique about its lobby?
There is a shorter podium next to the taller building in the same facade too.
heirloom September 15th, 2004, 02:33 PM i dunno but if i remember correctly the shorter building has nothing at lobby to grab one's attention
redstone September 15th, 2004, 04:27 PM What's with its lobby?!
It looks very plain, unlike any lobby.
Trances September 15th, 2004, 05:00 PM now every time i see a photo of singapore and spot this tower
has got me thinking about it
huaiwei September 15th, 2004, 05:02 PM :D
No matter how I look at it, it still dosent look as tall as the OCBC?
Cliff March 12th, 2005, 06:01 PM We must post this in the world forums! Its something worth to "hao lian" about!:D
The tallest someting!
huaiwei March 12th, 2005, 06:54 PM Hhaa....they will more likely raise their eyebrows and ask.....what is a telecoms exchange! :D
drwho March 12th, 2005, 11:37 PM so..every call domestic and international goes trough that Singtel-scraper:)
huaiwei March 13th, 2005, 01:02 PM I dont think so lah...haha..its not the only telecoms tower here. :D
Cliff March 14th, 2005, 04:56 AM Can we use the title: WORLD'S TALLEST WAREHOUSE"?:D
redstone March 14th, 2005, 05:11 AM It's usage is similliar to AT&T Longlines in NYC....
babystan03 March 14th, 2005, 10:28 AM A closer look at the top......
http://img202.exs.cx/img202/3047/pic0115817lr.jpg
huaiwei May 15th, 2005, 11:23 AM I like it!
http://img226.echo.cx/img226/817/img00370s5lg.jpg
RafflesCity May 15th, 2005, 11:25 AM looks like OCBC's relative
Bahraini Spirit May 15th, 2005, 01:52 PM Interesting to know what this building contains, I thought when I first looked at it that it was normal offices for SingTel and maybe other offices let out also. Exchanges seems to be placed in skyscrapers these days.
Cliff May 16th, 2005, 03:41 AM That last pic is awesome!
Anyway, I wonder how it will look like from the inside!
huaiwei May 20th, 2005, 08:36 PM Thanks thanks...I have been meaning to capture its metallic sheen! :D
drwho May 21st, 2005, 04:56 AM that last pic is cool huaiwei!!...the 350D in action?:)
