MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Open, Asia’s oldest national championship, goes truly international next year when all four rounds of its 96th staging will be beamed in about 850 million homes in 200 countries.

Serving as the probable second leg of the 2012 Asian Tour, the ICTSI-backed Open is also expected to draw some of the biggest names in the circuit led by American defending champion Berry Henson.

And for the 52nd time in Open history, it will be played at the age-old Wack Wack East with a prize pot of $300,000.

Jay Bayron, who finished second by a stroke to Henson, will lead the local charge, possibly along with Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Juvic Pagunsan and two-time champion Frankie Miñoza.

Busy year for PH Swimming League

The Philippine Swimming League continues its successful grassroots program with another busy schedule this year starting with the first UP Varsity Team sprint meet on Jan. 22 at the Diliman Preparatory School on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.

PSL president Susan Papa said the event, organized by UP head coach Noel Rivera, ushers in the 12-leg PSL Circuit which kicks off seven days later, on Jan. 29, at the 50-meter pool of the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City.

Host of the competition, the 19th leg on the PSL calendar which got underway over a year ago, is coach Ed Galeno.

The circuit, which has the full support of sports patron and former Sen. Nikki Coseteng, shifts Feb. 12 to typhoon-struck Cagayan de Oro where the players and officials will also take time off to donate clothes and goods to victims of the recent tragedy.

"Those who would like to help in the nationwide disaster effort can donate through the PSL, which will distribute them in the disaster areas," said Papa.

A week later, the PSL holds the 20th leg in Lucena, with Gov. David "Jayjay" Suarez as host and coach Virgilio de Luna as local coordinator.

The 21st leg is slated March 10-11 in the 10-lane Bosay Swimming pool in Antipolo, with coach Emer Matienzo as host.

The next month, coach Buddy Maulion is hosting the 22nd leg to be held April 14 in Calapan, Mindoro.

The PSL Circuit takes a break in May to hold the PSL National Open May 19-20 at the Rizal Memorial pool. It will hold the annual summer learn-to-swim program at the DPS on June 3. The project is a brainchild of DPS president and former Sen. Nikki Coseteng.

The circuit resumes June 10 with the PSL short course competition in Cavite, with coach Junneth Abesamis as host.

Another regional meet will be held in Cagayan de Oro on June 23, with different teams in Mindanao competing.

Other legs on the PSL calendar are the 25th leg July 22 in Pasay (host coach Nunilon), 27th leg Sept. 16 at DPS with the Philippine Swimming Coaches Association as host, the 28th leg Oct. 28 in Cavite (host Sea Beast Swim team coach Noy Fileteo), and the 29th leg Nov. 17-18 at DPS.

Papa said the PSL will, for the first time, hold international competitions this year, with initial participants to come from Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Today it's 100 years since the debut of (Spanish) Filipino football player Paulino Alcántara. The all time top scorer of FC Barcelona (counting non-official matches). The first Messi. I wonder if he is known in the Philippines?!

Look at #21 -- a Christopher Caluza. I think this is a first in Philippine history. Of course, he is a bi-national. The woman, Melissa Bulanhagui, did not qualify for this year's Worlds.

Pacquiao: WBO decision a lesson for judges
By Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino ring icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao on Thursday thanked the World Boxing Organization (WBO), after a panel convened by the sanctioning body said he defeated American Timothy Bradley via unanimous decision.

"Salamat sa naging desisyon ng mga panel, 'yun naman ang nasa puso ng mga boxing fans, lalo na ng mga kababayan natin," Pacquiao said in an interview with Ted Failon on radio DZMM.

The WBO commissioned five international judges to re-score the Pacquiao-Bradley bout, which took place last June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Bradley was declared the winner via split decision, with scores of 113-115, 115-113 and 115-113.

But the WBO's five-man panel saw the bout differently, and all five judges scored the fight in Pacquiao’s favor: 117-111, 117-111, 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113.

Greater priority for sports–Lopez (http://sports.inquirer.net/58033/greater-priority-for-sports-lopez)
By Ted S. Melendres
Philippine Daily Inquirer
10:11 pm | Sunday, August 12th, 2012

LONDON—The country’s chief of mission at the 30th London Olympics here believes it’s about time the government gave sports greater priority by making it a way of life for the Filipinos so it could arrest the country’s distressing decline in the international stage.

Manny Lopez, who is also the vice president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said Sunday he is completely flustered that the country again failed to land an Olympic medal when its neighbors made inroads even in sports that were not usually Southeast Asia’s forte.

“We are lagging way, way behind in terms of performance not only in the world level but also in the Southeast Asian level,” said Lopez, whose 11-athlete contingent extended the country’s medal drought to four Summer Games.

“The best way forward now is to make the government realize that it has to give more to sports. You know very well that sports is not a priority of the government, even of the private sector.”

Lopez said the government could start by fully integrating sports in school curriculums and by setting up sports institutes that will train and develop athletes for international competitions.

He cited as example the programs in China and Australia and tiny Singapore, where he said the government budget for sports—about P14 billion in 2011—dwarfs that of the Philippines.

The Philippine Sports Commission, the agency that funds the training and participation of Filipino athletes overseas, worked on a budget of about P500 million.

“In Australia, it’s the people’s way of life to indulge in sports,” said Lopez, also the former national boxing chief. “There are also excellent sports institutions in China and Singapore, why can’t we also make sports a way of life for us?

“This is where the government can really help, but first it has to make sports a priority.”

He said the country’s SEA Games rivals Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore managed to win medals because these countries treat their athletes better in terms of training, international stints and funding.

“There is no easy way to sports excellence,” said Lopez. “We all know about the problems in sports. I can speak only for myself, but politics is one of them. Hindi mo maiwasan na magkaroon ng bad image ang POC at PSC dahil maraming away sa mga NSAs (The POC and PSC cannot avoid having a bad image because many national sports associations are embroiled in disputes).

“But then you cannot discount politics, it’s part and parcel of sports. What we should avoid is politicking to win favors and dirty politics.”

Lopez said it pained him to see the Filipino athletes, one after another, bow out of the London Games to round out a campaign that was second only to Beijing 2008 in terms of futility.

Only light flyweight boxer Mark Anthony Barriga made it past the first round here, a small improvement on the country’s debacle in Beijing, where no athlete won a match or qualified to the next round.

“It’s sad that there are 95 million Filipinos and yet we only have 11 athletes here,” said the 50-year-old Lopez. “Nakakalungkot na dala-dala ng mga atleta ang bandera natin tapos wala tayong maipakita (It pains us to see our national athletes compete and fail to deliver). If other small countries can win, why not us?”

As a parting shot, Lopez said the country’s sports leaders should have the political will to step aside if they believe other people can do a better job.

“Again, I can only speak for myself. I had the political will to turn over the baton of Abap (Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines), I am sure many other sports leaders will do the same if they think it’s the right thing to do.”

PH Gymnasts Get Japanese Training
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
November 20, 2012, 7:53pm

Gymnastics experts from Japan headed by Japanese Olympic Committee Coaching Director Takashi Kobayashi are undergoing coaching and training seminar for the Philippine team at the Rizal Memorial Gymnastics Center.

The two-day seminar which started yesterday was aimed at boosting the country’s chances in any international meet.

Joining Kobayashi were Iketani Yukio, director of the Iketani Gymnastics Club; Kazukuni Ono, head coach of the Iketani Gymnastics Club; Japan national team member Mai Murakami; and Ryo Shirai, Motokatsu Sunagawa and Hiromi Shimoda of Zippy Action.

"It's been our wish to help Asian countries become strong in gymnastics. We are more than willing to share all the information we have because we wanted to see Asia as a strong region in terms of the sport," said Kobayashi during a press briefing at the Philippine Sports Commission.

Yukio, who won two bronze and one silver medal in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, added more information is needed in developing athletes aside from training.

"It is important to have all the information in order to grow," said Yukio. "Japan also went to Russia to absorb skills. That's what Philippine gymnastics must do."

Details Published on Thursday, 13 June 2013 00:00 Written by BONG PEDRALVEZ

WHILE still a member of the national wushu team, Rene Catalan, although relatively small, was a dynamic and crafty fighter who made the most of his opportunities in a short but fruitful career, highlighted by gold medals in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games and 2006 Doha Asian Games.

Seven years after retiring from the national team, the Iloilo City native, now a mixed martial artist, continued to cash in on his past achievements last Monday, receiving P290,000 in retirement benefits under Republic Act 9064, otherwise known as the Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001.
