Interesting podcast yesterday (9/3/2011) from 2UE in Sydney with Paul Murray interviewing Chris Warhurst who is a project manager associated with the theme park. Stage One is projected to open next summer if approved.

Fabian March 12th, 2011, 10:27 PM The D/A featuring the concept plan is currently on public exhbition.
LanceDriver March 13th, 2011, 12:11 PM Sydney doesn't need anymore parks!

Derek40 March 20th, 2011, 10:15 AM This is great news, the revival of water based theme parks in NSW.
The nearest one is in Jamboroo, and that is in the Illawarra region, too far from here and a big day out for most Sydneysiders as well.
Fabian March 20th, 2011, 09:17 PM The closest Sydney had was "The Beach" at Australia's Wonderland before that closed in 2004.
Jamberoo is good and have done what they can to expand, but the problem is that Kiama Council have been reluctant to support their expansion despite obvious benefits for the Illawarra.

I would imagine there's more to the story. The main issue I could think off the top of my head would be the extra traffic onto a road network that is nothing more than rural roads - I have seen traffic lining all the way back to Albion Park on hot days.

It's not really a case that Kiama Council didn't support the extensions to Jamberoo. The extensions involved the construction of a car park on rural zoned land - car parking is a prohibited land use in the zone. Read more here (http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/news/local/news/general/jamberoo-park-expansion-in-limbo/1928505.aspx).
It appears the applicant wants to proceed with the expansion. According to the linked article, Kiama Council and the applicant are discussing rezoning as a solution.
Fabian March 21st, 2011, 05:14 AM It's a fair compromise. I've noticed that the shuttle service from the park to Kiama Station is run twice daily, one return trip in the morning and afternoon departing Kiama at 10:10am and 3:40pm. Why cannot extra shuttles operate down there?
With Wet 'n' Wild, it is fair to assume that a shuttle service would operate from Blacktown Railway Station on a regular basis. I think that will be a key to the parks success in that regards.
Fabian April 4th, 2011, 06:25 AM Some hurdles have caused concerns with Blacktown Council with traffic and heritage issues.

70 % of respondents have indicated to Planning NSW that they support the theme park (The Blacktown Sun, 22/8/2011).
Joelby August 28th, 2011, 07:27 AM And so they should. It will be a great boost for the local yoof job market, even if it is seasonal.
Fabian August 29th, 2011, 02:51 AM Parts of western Sydney have amongst the highest youth unemployment rates in Australia so it does help them alot.

Same could be said about the Central Coast, I am surprised that there is no consideration for this region - which has had many theme parks come and go over the years.
Fabian September 3rd, 2011, 01:21 AM There is the proposed Chinese Cultural Park for that region which itself will be unique.

Central Coast has beaches, the whole point of having this is so people in Western Sydney don't have to always drive over an hour to beach, and Sydney wants to have theme parks again since they closed down Wonderland.
Fabian September 4th, 2011, 11:58 PM A win-win for everybody.
Fabian September 10th, 2011, 05:45 AM The Daily Telegraph (9/9/2011) had a report on feedback from the submissions. Alot of teenagers sent submissions in favour of the project. There was some NIMBY opposition. One protested the amount of noise that would come out of the rides as a problem as it would impact on their rural lifestyle.

Melb_aviator September 10th, 2011, 08:41 AM ^^ NIMBY opposition? Never
Giving employment opportunities and an attraction for many families out there to go to should definately be main considerations here over a few 'noise' complaints.
.Rogue.Trader.69. September 10th, 2011, 03:52 PM Look at the location on a map. If there are local residents, they're few and far between on that side of the M4. As a St Clair resident, I grew up 5 mins from Wonderland and now a waterpark 10 mins away, I can't wait for it! I do agree with the comments in the article. I know its gotta survive coz its operating only 1/2 of the year.
But $50 per person is too expensive to go to every few weekends for Western Sydney residents or even Sydney residents to bother going to instead of the beach which is free.
I do hope like one comment said that they create a discount for Sydney or Western Sydney residents, otherwise like Wonderland it'll get abandoned by Sydney residents after they've been once or twice.

Prospect: Government gives Wet'n'Wild ticket to ride
The Planning Department gave concept approval for the $98 million first stage of the $140 million project on December 8 last year. It is up to the park’s builders, Village Roadshow, to get back to the government by March on “conditions” made on the project.
Construction is expected to begin in a few months in time to open by September 2013. The government is leasing 25ha of land for the project, which is expected to attract nearly a million visitors in it's first year.
Village said 300 jobs would be created during construction and operation of the park and $500 million would be injected into the western Sydney economy in the first 10 years.
Fabian February 1st, 2012, 08:21 PM Thanks for the update Mattie. It will be a big challenge to get it ready for September 2013.
