View Full Version : Sports in Sydney nowadays
calais September 13th, 2004, 03:20 AM I guess Soccer, which is my favorite sport, isnīt one of bigger sports in Oz.
Since Iīm moving to Sydney next month, Iīd like to have some report of whatīs going on about sports in Sydney.
Itīs a little bit complicated for me to get whatīs all about AFL, NRL, Rugby Union and all of these, although Iīll travel with my Wallabies shirt on backpack.
Maybe Rugby Union itīs all about the Aussie National Team against other hot spots like England, South Africa and the Mauris of NZ, am I right? And how about the local league, is it good game? I used to see some Rugby WC Finals on TV but didnīt get too used to.
And Soccer? Only Soceroos playing for 2006 WC or will i see some action on field about smaller and local teams?
Cheers!
TOCC September 13th, 2004, 09:43 AM Soccer in australia is currently going a overhaul, new teams, less teams and and a total change in structure, goes alright in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, bit lucklustre in Brissie and Sydney.
Rugby League is the choice of sport in Sydney with a few teams to pick from to support, depends on where you move to in sydney. Theres a lot of life time fans about these clubs.
Sydney Swans(AFL), easy to understand game, can be entertaining and it has a reasonable amount of support in Sydney.
Rugby Union, well theres a Super 12 team(Warratahs) which plays teams from around the country and overseas, can be entertaining but your limited to 5/6 home games a year. Yet Sydney does have the benefit of hosting Wallaby test matches which are constantly sell outs and have terrific atmosphere.
Cricket, well you either love it or you dont. Plenty of matches through the year.
any other sport is practically off the media radar, oh except basketball, does alright but not absolutely terrific depending on where your from.
ForeverSalfordRed September 14th, 2004, 07:27 AM Rugby League is the finest sport around. I converted from soccer in the UK about 16 years ago. State of Origin is the top level of the game here in Oz.
Rugby union I remember seeing now and again on the box, but had little appeal to me. Its a game with around 300 rules! Take the ref away and it would be a good game. Club rugby union attracts so few supporters to games, whilst Brisbane Broncos in NRL have had over 50,000 at a home game, so the atmosphere contrast is so vast.

Yeah yeah and AFL nationally dominates both sports.
You love rugby league, thats great. If your only ambition here is crap on about rugby league and slam other sports then there are plenty of RL forums out there.
Interesting you pick on union club crowds. Super 12 crowds are quite good. Of course you wouldn't want to compare with AFL attendances would you?
jellyman September 14th, 2004, 11:33 PM but since this isn't an AFL forum we wouldn't want to go on about how great AFL is either??
what the heck
I love AFL for its grace, charm, skill, quirkiness, speed, stamina, strength, crowd atmosphere.
Rugby League is a test of buffiness which is exciting as watching an arm wrestle. Of course last time I watched an arm wrestle it was at a party and we all gathered to cheer and carry on and had a great time.
I hope you weren't expecting much meaning in this post.
Mephisto September 15th, 2004, 04:52 AM Yeah yeah and AFL nationally dominates both sports.

Sorry this is a thread for Sydney sport not Melbourne sport, and he didn't 'slam' any other sports.
calais September 15th, 2004, 05:14 AM I heard Swans couldnīt do better than a semifinalist place. Is this club traditional? Couse in the end itīs all about the playoffs, and the final itself.
So letīs go off football, till next season.
Which Sydney Rugby League club has bigger attendances, I mean, the most popular one?

Err. I didn't go on about how great the AFL is. Just stated a one line fact.
Sorry.

No. This thread is about sports in Sydney. AFL is a sport played in Sydney?

Yep the Swans are out.
The swans started out as South Melbourne in 1874. Relocated to Sydney in 1981 then became the swans in 1982.
Biggest average attendance for a Sydney RL club is the Canterbury Bulldogs at 21,191.

I defended the rugby union!
And rather than dribbling on can you disagree with me?
Jimmy James September 15th, 2004, 12:52 PM Basketball is the most representative sport in Australia with 2 teams from Sydney, 2 from Melbourne, then 1 each from Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Wollongong, Newcastle, Townsville, Cairns and across the Tasman in New Zealand
Jimmy James September 15th, 2004, 01:01 PM Here are the Teams
Adelaide 36ers

Brisbane Bullets
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/bullets-profile.gif
Wollongong Hawks
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/hawks-profile.gif
Hunter Pirates (Newcastle-Maitland - Club used to be the Canberra Cannons)
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/pirates-profile.gif
Cairns Taipans
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/taipans-profile.gif
Perth Wildcats
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/wildcats-profile.gif
(You can't have a basketball competition without a team called the Wildcats! )
Melbourne Tigers
(There also used to be a team called the Victoria Titans - but they must have folded, I couldn't find them on the NBL website. Melbourne also used to field the North Melbourne Giants and the South East Melbourne Magic)
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/tigers-profile.gif
West Sydney Razorbacks
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/razorbacks-profile.gif
Sydney Kings
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/kings-profile.gif
Last Years Champions I think!?
Townsville Crocodiles
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/crocodiles-profile.gif
New Zealand Breakers
http://www.nbl.com.au/_content/club/breakers-profile.gif
There also used to be teams from Hobart (Hobart Devils) and Geelong (Geelong Supercats) so all in all the NBL is more prolific in this country than any of the football codes, unfortunately it doesn't draw the same numbers.
Amaruu September 15th, 2004, 04:55 PM Correct me if I am wrong, but the biggest non-finals match in Sydney this year, in any domestic competition in any of the football codes was the Sydney Swans v COLLINGWOOOOOOD match during the mid year break.
calais September 16th, 2004, 04:29 AM Hawks... Kings... Is this NBA? Hope not.
I might be noticing some rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, in role of AFL and NRL. But since Iīm going to Sydney (sick of living in a non-beached spot), letīs just hope Roosters can reach the finals, so I could see it with my eyes.
Iīve just launched the NRL`s website "final calculator" and with my predictions, the Roosters win after tough match, beating Panthers in the Grand Final, setting us free for a beer day off.
Chuq September 16th, 2004, 05:43 AM There also used to be teams from Hobart (Hobart Devils) and Geelong (Geelong Supercats) so all in all the NBL is more prolific in this country than any of the football codes, unfortunately it doesn't draw the same numbers.
There was also a Gold Coast team. Gold Coast Rollers, I think? The three teams were canned at the same time about 5-8 years ago.
Cee_em_bee October 14th, 2004, 01:22 PM Yes, Nbl went to shit after Ten stopped showing Nba games.
I still support my Razors though!
barneybuck October 14th, 2004, 09:55 PM The NBL which had Melbourne as its biggest support base in the past is now almost non existant with just the one team in the Tigers and even they are struggling to pull decent crowds. Basketball is in a lot of trouble in Victoria and I dont see things getting any better in the near future.
ForeverSalfordRed November 2nd, 2004, 05:21 PM I defended the rugby union!
You would! And you need prayer!

I smell hypocracy? Anyone else?
coastal November 5th, 2004, 09:56 AM To see a unique collection of sports that originated in Sydney and has spread around the country visit a surf carnival. Its one of NSW biggest club sports (by participation).
Its almost as big as AFL in Vic.
and after almost 100 years its appeal is spread far and wide not just in the beach suburbs.
I love RL (Go Rabbits) but when the season, State of origin and the tests are over the season has already started on the beaches most sundays over the warmer months.
CULWULLA November 5th, 2004, 10:55 AM hey i now belong to Umina surf club. its fantastic. im doing my bronze medallion and then i can compete in carnivals.my daughter is in nippers atm and that keeps me busy on Sundays. its an excellent way to keep fit.we live just near Umina beach and try to swim there most days.
coastal November 5th, 2004, 12:16 PM Good luck with the bronze. Next stop the Umina boat crew. Umina is such a beautiful beach.
Me and the kids are members of the swim club at The Entrance ocean baths. The pools are being restored at the moment so the weekly evening meets are being held at an indoor pool. Thats ok by me as the start of the season can be a bit dark and cold before daylight savings starts.
