So, if this is a facts and photos thread, why did you name it "Islamic Romania" if only 0,3 % (according to your source) of the population is muslim "legacy" ?! You could have named "mosques in Romania", or whatever, not "Islamic Romania".

Abdul-Medgid mosque in Medgidia. The name of the town Medgidia comes obviously from Abdul-Mejid, the sultan who laid the foundation of the city a century and a half ago.You can see some huge candels in front, nowadays, they are used only as a decoration, in the past, they used to be lighted. Yes, in the city centre they do. They call to prayer about 2-3 times a day.

But in the countryside, the situation is somehow different, some display only once a day, some 2-3 times a day, and some only once a week. It depends on the imam.

Interesting, I lived in Qatar for a year and most of the mosques only did the call to prayer in the evenings though some also did it in the afternoons.

One more question: Do most of Constanta's Muslim residents go to the Carol I Mosque or are there several mosques throughout the city?

Carol is the biggest and most prominent of the mosques in Constanta city. But 400 meters north of it there is an other Ottoman mosque, the Hunkar mosque.

In other neighbourhoods, there are also mosques: Anadolchioi (that with flowers on the alley), Coiciu, Tomis 3, Piata Chiliei.

Yep, there are 6 mosques in total in Constanta.

Besides, there are 2 NGO's activating among the Muslims in Constanta, one led by Arabs and one led by Turks. Both offer accomodation, food and financial help to children in need, and of course, they have mosques open to the public.
There is also a mosque in Palazu Mare, which used to be a village, and now it's considered part of Constanta.

So, there are 7 mosques with minaret in Constanta, and 2 prayer rooms (masgids). 9 in total.

There's a Mosque in Bucharest in Regie/Cringasi area that as far as I know can be seen from the 41 Tram Line. There's others for sure ( Colentina could be checked out ) but more like mini-mosques, not architectural relevant.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AB710ubDJlI/TH_gP0EDzwI/AAAAAAAABOg/Wm3P7j_ycas/s1600/moscheeaarrahman.JPG
This is all I could find.

About the population, lets say ~70.000 in 2002 is quite relevant since I don't think the population growth made a big change, I would guess it's around 80.000 today if we number the same people ( - deaths, + births ). Of course, in all this time theres probably a big number of Muslim people of different ethnicities that came to Romania, especially turks in Bucharest. Simply judging by all the shaorma/kebab places in the city that are owned by them, there is surely a number of non-Romanians Muslims *fixed* living around. I would also mention that after each Galata/Fener/Besiktas triumph in the Turkish League the Victory Square is loaded of people celebrating ( so it's x3 since I doubt Besiktas fans will celebrate a Fener win :D ).
Theres a small recent history of Muslims in Romania, you could read about Ada Kaleh, a island on the Danube that was flooded after a dam was built and for sure there's some Muslims still living in Turnu-Severin.
I do believe there are a lot of ex-muslism that lost their identity during the communist period and now may have simple Romanian names, Christian religion and even simply not bother.

Yes, we should also concentrate on it, but maybe later. It was an island of Islam on an island of the Danube, between Serbia, Hungary and Romania.
There are some mixed-family members who have Christian names, or there are some that follow both religions...however, they are a very small minority, especially in cities like Braila, Fetesti, Drobeta Turnu Severin.

Yes, the second biggest immigrant group in Romania is represented by the Turks. Most of them do business.

The first are Moldavians.

In Dobrogea region, the Muslims are represented by 4 ethnic groups: The Turks, the Tatars, the Albanians ( a small community) and the Muslim Gypsies. These Gypsies further divide in 2 or 3 branches, of which I don't know much. For instance, those in Babadag area speak a different language, besides Turkish, when compared to those in Negru-Voda area.

The Turks have similar facial characteristics when compared to the average Romanian. You can only know they are Turks when seeing the way their women tie the headscarf, or when the men wear the headtop.
The Tatars have Asian characteristics, tend to be small and slim when young, and small and chubby when aging :D But there are exceptions too.
The Gypsies have specific characteristics and outfit, especially the vivid colours and the amount of gold on them is a trademark :)
However, because the gypsies have learned Turkish during the Ottoman rule, they declare themselves as Turks.

Generally speaking, yes, but as in every community, problems appear all the time :)
And it seems that statistically, the regions where more than 2 communities coexist, there is a stronger social cohesion, helping people fight poverty better. For this reason, Dobrogea is a model of tolerance between people.

And yes, people in Dobrogea are especially friendly :)

After the RO-YU gvts. flooded the island and the old city of Orşova to make place for the Iron Gates I, a man from Ada-Kaleh opened a Turkish café in Turnu Severin. As a young man, I was there two times and I clearly remember the flavor of a coffee boiled on fine sand in one of the very few private enterprises of the communist era. Unfortunately, now that coffee-shop is closed for good and its owner is probably long time gone from Romania. :( And we're stuck here with those disgusting espresso machines, slowly forgetting what true coffee really means.

I've passed many time on the road to Turnu Severin just near Şimian Island. The fortress is still visible although now is almost covered in wild vegetation. It was somehow obvious - except for the communists, of course - that you can't move large communities wherever and whenever you want. Plus, the landscape was completely different there for any resident of Ada-Kaleh to consider moving in: while Ada-Kaleh was placed in a splendid gorge between the mountain shores of Romania and Yugoslavia, Şimian Island is located instead in the middle of a hot dusty plain.

Yeah to be fair moving to an island in the middle of the Danube, on the plains must seem rather unattractive.

I can understand living in one, particularly as a result of the historical roots and community that must have been formed, but artificially recreating it would not work.

Sad stories really, both this and Orsova. When you think the Three Gorges Dam displaced 1 million people, it really makes you wonder.

Although I know its future benefits, I sometimes too wonder if it is really worthing.

About Ada-Kaleh, I found this video (http://dl.transfer.ro/Ada_Kaleh-transfer_RO-14mar-eac1e4.avi). I'm sorry, the audio is only in Romanian, but one can see the last year of the island and the efforts made by communists to move the fortress. I couldn't find any other way to embed the video, so you should download it (it has about 107 MB).

@Claudiu:

Daca ai vreo informatie despre asta, as fi bucuros sa aflu. Restul, e usor.

@Cadar,
