View Full Version : Petronas Towers, Sears Tower, ESB and more
STR September 13th, 2004, 11:47 PM I designed these a while back, before I got photoshop, so they are a bit basic, and small. I have built them all (and more) using cardstock. I don't think they'd look that good blown up without more detail work. This isn't really a submission as much as a blueprint for someone who wants to do a full size version. There's also one more file for the Sears Tower I have to upload.
Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur
Each section is divided into two square halves (top and bottom) rotate top half 45 degrees slide into bottom. See diagram on top right corner of first image.

The Sears Tower can be found here. (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=139811)
Empire State Building, New York
I don't know how to describe how to put this together.

Central Plaza, Hong Kong
Easy enough to figure out. Remember the corners are meant to be W-folded

Tuntex Sky Tower, Taiwan
Be careful where you fold. The part in the bottom right is the sides of the hole.

If these aren't clear enough PM me and I'll send you the original bitmaps.
My other buildings include:
Aon Center, John Hancock Center, World Trade Center New York complex, Water Tower Place, World Trade Center Osaka, Tansamerica Pyramid, Chrysler Building, Citigroup Center Manhattan, and a half dozen more cubes
I plan to redo all of the buildings above at a larger scale with better detail. They will each be posted individually.
Culiat September 14th, 2004, 01:07 AM Wonderful!
STR September 14th, 2004, 04:28 AM ^Thanks.
I'm not really big on high-detail textures, but I am pretty good at visualizing how a two-dimensional paper can be folded/cut into a three-dimensional object in my head. So, I guess if someone wanted a building modelled I could render an outline of the parts and they could add textures. Just a thought.
Here's the Emirates Twin Towers. I use painted toothpicks for spires/antennas if you build these you'll know right where to put them.

STR September 14th, 2004, 10:40 PM Here's how to assemble each of the Petronas Towers. The whole assembly takes about 3 hours total. If you want to make it twice the scale of SSP, which seems to be your scale, than multiply any of my buildings by 1.56.

STR September 29th, 2004, 07:16 AM ^Sure.
rafaelfnunes October 2nd, 2004, 03:37 AM STR, I ALWAYS looked for models of these buildings!!! Thank you SOOOO much for post them here!!!!! They are perfect! Congratulations!
If you donīt mind, I would like to print the John Hancock Center, The NYC Citigroup, the WTC of NY and the Transamerica Pyramid too.
Congratulations! These models are wonderful!
sasha ITALIA October 2nd, 2004, 03:35 PM Can you please take us any high-res version??!
There are wonderful!
STR October 3rd, 2004, 07:59 AM I don't have any hi-res versions. I could re-do some of them, but I won't promise anything.

COOL! what software did you used to create these diagrams? Can i get it free via internet?
STR October 3rd, 2004, 07:11 PM I used MS Paint. I drew these pixel by pixel.
I have redone Sears Tower at a higher resolution. Please go to the link and vote.

Just MS Paint? Then how did you combine it to form a building?
STR October 4th, 2004, 07:40 PM ^I did it in my head, though for angles (like the top of Emirates) I used the basic Windows Calculator to figure out exact lengths. Most of the time it wasn't a problem, but with the Sears Tower, I literally sat down for a five minutes, with my eyes closed, trying to figure out where everything would go. The first attempt had a few problems, but they were easy to work out, and the second attempt worked. That version is what you see above.
Are you telling me there's an easier way than doing it in my head?
Taipei101 October 12th, 2004, 06:59 AM Could you post- Aon Center, John Hancock Center, World Trade Center New York complex World Trade Center Osaka Citigroup Center Manhattan.
STR October 12th, 2004, 07:18 AM ^I plan to redo all of the buildings at a larger scale, like the Sears Tower, and post them individually. When I get around to them depends on my schedule, but I plan to first redo Petronas, then Citigroup HQ, then WTC NY. After that I have no plans in particular, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Taipei101 October 13th, 2004, 12:27 PM Thank you.

YESSS WTC!! If you want, I have an High detailed model of the WTC complex, with the all 7 buildings, but it's an PDF file and it's maded for an A4 sheet, also the model come very nice but little... can you use this model but getting it bigger? For example with the a Full page size Twin Tower...
sasha ITALIA October 13th, 2004, 02:33 PM the link fotr the model!! http://www.wurlington-bros.com/BuildYour/WTC2002.pdf
STR October 21st, 2004, 06:30 AM ^I'll get to the twins soon, and good news; at the SSPx2 scale, the twin towers just barely make it on to one sheet.
STR October 30th, 2004, 09:29 PM I decided to do the World Trade Center next, instead of Petronas. Since I'm going to do the whole complex, this will be very large, so it will take a while. My only problem is in finding photos of the roofs of the Twin Towers. I'm looking for aerial pics, and if anybody has some please post, or link them here.
While I'm doing the WTC, I think I'll throw in a separate model of the new 7WTC while I'm at it.
rafaelfnunes October 30th, 2004, 11:36 PM Well, can you post the John Hancock Center and the Transamerica Pyramid??
Oh, hereīs the photo.

JuanPa October 31st, 2004, 06:38 PM :applause: Great Job. A real fan of Skyscrapers!!!
STR October 31st, 2004, 08:50 PM rafaelfnunes, thanks for the pic. I'll be getting to the other buildings as my schedule allows. If you're interested in the "prototype" versions PM me.
As for the WTC, I've competed 1,2, and 4 WTC, as well as part of the plaza. As I said above, this will be a very large model, in order to keep scale with the rest of the buildings posted here.
Preliminary dimensions are as follows:
Total Base: 7x7.5in (17x19cm)
Austin Tobin Plaza ~2x2in (5x5cm)
Twin Towers: 10.6x1.5x1.5in (24x4x4cm)
Height of Original Tower 7: ~4in (10cm)
New Tower 7: ~5in (13cm)
STR November 4th, 2004, 04:52 AM Here's a face from the Twin Towers' model. Full-size. Please share you thoughts.
http://img125.exs.cx/img125/1016/face.jpg
Oops, I cut-off the botton 1/4th of the lobby, oh well you get the idea.
STR November 7th, 2004, 12:17 AM Another update, I've finished the base, the plaza (it will be above-grade, just like the real one) I have assembled both Twin Towers, Tower 7, and the base is drying. I should finish designing the plaza buildings by Sunday, and hopefully the whole model should be completed by Tuesday. It should come out to about 25-30 parts, but is pretty easy to assemble.
STR November 11th, 2004, 05:14 AM I had to scrap my first attempt, a procedural error during assembly. However, I've already begun a second attempt. The second try is shown below.
