I was reading the Superbowl thread over at the skybar, and I wondered, why do NYC teams suck?
except for the Yankees, I don't recall a NYC team winning some trophy recently.
Where are the Jets and Giants in the Superbowl?
Where are the Knicks at the NBA finals?
What about the rangers or the Islanders? no, Tampa gets the trophy. Tampa, who gets temperatures in the '80s in winter!
what about the metrostars?
At least there's New Jersey with the Devils, and the Nets who managed to win the conference.
I'm certain I stretched the truth about some teams, and maybe I forgot some titles won, but not in the last 5 years.
What do we need to get some winners for our city? Money? Fans?

Well, I've been a diehard Ranger fan since I was about 12, so I can provide some input on them. Basically, the way things have been run at the front office in the last half decade or so have been horrible. They've been scrambling to bring in so many high-priced players, they seemed to totally forget about long-term investment. Not to mention the team just doesn't seem to have the same chemistry as they did back when they were a contender.

Although 1994 was obviously that special year, it's actually the 96-97 season that I remember much more vividly, when both Gretzky and Messier were on the same team again, and, being the 5th seed, went all the way to the Conference Finals (in the process beating the 2nd-seeded Devils in the semi-finals), only to get knocked out by the top-seeded Flyers (who later got swept by the Red Wings. Hah!).

But yeah...I could say this year (since a lockout is all but guaranteed to happen), is a re-building year, but that's what we've been saying for the past 6 years now. I think we were much more conservative this off-season and picked up some young guys while keeping a good core of seasoned players (the ones who deserve to stay on the team for the most part).

So while we probably won't be anything amazing whenever the NHL starts back up again, expect to see the Rangers starting to heat things up in another 2 seasons. My prediction anyways.

And as for the Jets and Giants...I'm not too much into football, but I got a lot of friends here who are, and they're saying if Pennington stays healthy for the Jets and Curtis Martin keeps things going with the rush, the Jets can definately make the playoffs, and may even contend for the AFC East title. :)

Yeah the Jets have a good shot this year. The Giants...well..we'll wait till Eli Manning turns out to be a great one.

Ohhh Baseball. My favorite sport!
The Yankees need to step it up. Bahston is what ~2 games behind? Enough with this Steinbrenner buying every damn player from every team and they wind up sucking. An overhaul would probably be best, you know, maybe drop some of these players that suck (ie. Kevin Brown) and get some real good prospects for them. Steinbrenner needs to re-do his farm system, and get some good players in the pipeline that will come cheap in the future. :) I mean, the last dynasty was chock full of homegrown players that were good: Rivera, Jeter, Martinez, Williams, Posada, and on and on and on. That doesn't mean that they need to stop winning now, no way, they still have and awesome team on the field, they just need to think more about 4-5 years down the road. :) My 2cents

The Mets.
Lovable losers. What else can I say? ;) sorry Jack

Seriously, they too have a high payroll, but unlike the Yanks, they don't win. They are in dire need of an overhaul, they gotta get rid of old stinkin vets that suck dare I think Piazza? That might be going too far, but you get what I mean

Anywayz, I'm just ramblin' on don't expect anyone 2 reply. Cheers to NYC sports

Did any of you all get a chance to watch "Nine Innings From Ground Zero" on HBO last night?

I still remember watching the Twin Comebacks. The footage last night gave me goosebumps.

I Saw it, great flashback for me, i was glued to the season playoff series with the A's and the ws with arizona... the yankees still rocked...the yanks never cease to amaze me, ever. The magic they had those 4 years is unbeatable, and the greatest thing about that, is it beat the magic of the '78 dynasty and bucky dents miracle over the sox, it beat the maris-mantle home run race, it beat the bambino's yankee's, yankees 96-2001 were unbelievable, why they were hated, i dont know. Hate steinbrenner, hate general management, id even say hate the fans, but not the yankees, how on earth could you possibly hate them? Unless your a sour fan of some other team, but still? imo everyone else in the league of baseball is a one hit wonder, whereas the yankees are forever.. Im ready to watch them progress into a new dynasty anyone else?

I just saw the "Nine Innings From Ground Zero" HBO special tonight, it was well done.

Brings flashbacks here too. I'm a Mets fan but even I was staying up all night waiting anxiously to see what would happen. The games at Yankee Stadium were as Gianni used the best word to describe it...magic. Unforgettable, the clock changing to 12:00 and for first time ever we had November baseball then the Jeter homer.

Can't forget about everyone in the city making fun of Kim after choking two straight nights. Funny how Bush actually prepared so much for that one pitch, gotta admit though, it was one of the best.

Everything about how it brought NYC closer together and got our minds off 9/11 for just 3 hours a day was true, it was really our escape. We actually had something to talk about the next day at work and school other than the attack.

Amazing World Series in general, from start to finish, unforgettable.

As with the Rangers, the Knicks management have been too consumed with impatience to invest in actually rebuilding the team from the ground up with people who grow into greatness. Case in point, the Nets were a work in progress until they got the right combination of young and old. Too bad they're going downhill from now on, Jason Kidd or not.

The Knicks brass has a misconception that New York loves a winner and wants them now so they end up investing in old, expensive players who they think can bring them the championship now, losing so much salary cap room in the process and are untradeable once they outlive their usefulness. So post-Ewing, the Knicks always got to the playoffs but were never real contenders. I think they have to give Knicks fans more credit. I think they have more patience for a team they know is rebuilding than for a team of good, expensive players who have no sense of "team."

Yup, sounds a lot like the Rangers, except for the whole making the playoffs part. :bash:

hey guys, I saw today on the 5pm news on either Fox or NBC (I don't remember which) about some project for the Coliseum! They want to redo the whole thing for the Islanders, expand the arena, and add a 60-story Tower!! They say it'll be seen from 100 miles away, and will be offices, residential and hotel. And also it will have some observatory on top, and you'd be able to see from Montauk to Manhattan. The problem is that it's obviously in a suburban area and there will be protests from locals

Wang unveils plan for rebuilt Coliseum, 60-story tower

By Monte R. Young and Jamie Herzlich
September 27, 2004

New York Islander owner Charles Wang unveiled his vision for a $200 million "transformation" of the aging Nassau Coliseum Monday afternoon, and it includes additional seating and the construction of a athletic complex adjacent to the facility.

"What we are doing here is great for Long Island, great for New York. It will bring business and jobs to the area and dollars to the county and state," said Michael Picker, senior vice president of operations for the Islanders and the New York Dragons arena football team.

Calling it "The Coliseum At The Lighthouse," Picker said that Wang's "vision" for the area would also include developing the 72 acres surrounding the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He said it would include "The Great Lighthouse," which will be a 60 story building with a 10,000 square foot observatory deck for sight-seeing with a hundred mile of unobstructed view

Beneath the deck, will be the Grand Hotel at the Lighthouse, that will host a 5 star hotel with restaurants, ballrooms and sky terraces. The lobby of the hotel will be on the 40th floor and every room, officials said, will have a "incredible views." Beneath the grand hotel, will be luxury condominiums ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 square feet

Picker said there is also a proposal to develop "The Residences At The Lighthouse, that will be a "affordable priced" mid-rise rental apartments in the heart of the Lighthouse and connected to the Athletic Complex and the Coliseum.

Financial details of the proposed plan by Wang, were sketchy. Picker said the major overhaul of the coliseum and construction of the athletic complex will be done with help from state, county and Wang. He would not release further details. Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi would not comment on the proposed plan.

Some members of the development community said Monday that the grandiose project still has to face many hurdles including county and town approvals.

"It's highly unlikely the Town of Hempstead will grant something like that becasue its contrary to most of the development on the Island," said Desmond Ryan, executive director of the Association for a Better Long Island, a developer's lobbying group. "The approval process is like root canal without anesthesia."

After all, EAB Plaza is only 15 stories high and the closest comparison would be the Citicorp Building in Long Island City with 50 floors. Town of Hempstead officials yesterday said it had not seen the plans and could not comment. Still, local real estate experts said it is common for developers to ask for more than they would get.

"They usually start out with something very dramatic with high levels of expectation," said Paul Amoruso, managing director of Oxford & Simpson in Jericho, which has developed office, retail and hotel projects. "Then negotiations begin. It's part of the whole process."

But, he added, f anyone could get something like this off the ground it would be Wang. "He's very well respected by government leaders," said Amoruso.

Aside from the tower proposal, the business community was upbeat about a revamped coliseum, which would include eateries and a retail component with at least 12 entertainment retail stores.

"What we see all over the country is the creation of suburban mixed use centers," said Robert Yaro, president of the Regional Plan Association, a research and advocacy group in Manhattan. "I think it has enormous potential."

As for the retail component, experts said Wang should try to differentiate the stores from others in the surrounding area given the close proximity of Roosevelt Field Mall.

Wang has continued to forge ahead on a new arena in Nassau County despite dropping out of the bidding for the New Jersey Nets late last year, when developer Bruce Ratner was given the rights to buy the team and move it to a site in downtown Brooklyn.

County officials have viewed a coliseum project as central to the redevelopment of the central Nassau Hub, which stretches from the EAB Plaza in Uniondale on the southeast to Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City on the northwest.

Suozzi has never unveiled any specific plans for redevelopoing the Coliseum or surrounding areas, but he's said plans would call for the construction of two industries along the lines of technology, financial services, computers or electronics. He's also said development of more entertainment and sports facilities were important.

To support the construction and development, Suozzi has said in the past that the county plans to ease traffic flow and build a transportation system that makes it easier to get to the Hub from New York City and other Long Island communities.

Many had remained encouraged that Wang might be able to bring a pro baskeball team to Long Island, and in doing so, boost chances for a significant redevelopment of the Coliseum. But Wang said the timing of the Nets sale clashed with the arena process.

I myself don't even remember creating it, that's how old it is :D

But so far the year is going well for the MetroBulls.
Although I don't like them (for being in New Jersey and being the property of a bad attention deprived drink company), they're still the only alternative (until they give us a second team which might happen around 2010), and even though their defense is porous, the coming of JP Angel is a miracle for all of us soccer fans. That guy is a real scoring machine, and I'm amazed at the streak he's pulling so far, 7 goals in 6 games. The stuff of legends.

As to the Yankees, perhaps it's the start of the Curse of Lidle's Ghost.

Did you guys know how the Brooklyn Dodgers got their name?

"By 1890 New Yorkers (Brooklyn was a separate city until it became a borough in 1898) routinely called anyone from Brooklyn a "trolley dodger," due to the vast network of street car lines criss-crossing the borough then. When the second Washington Park burned down early in the 1891 season, the team moved to nearby Eastern Park, which was bordered on two sides by street car tracks. That's when the team was first called the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. That was eventually shortened to Dodgers."
