as you may (or may not) know, my love of gold coast and these images made me so.... ecstatic!
kwigibo September 14th, 2004, 12:55 PM Hey, you can see my house in the first pic, top right corner.
Anyway, why do you love the coast so much? It's waterways are the perfect metaphor for the city itself, shallow and boring. If I could afford to move I would.
Aussie Bhoy September 14th, 2004, 12:59 PM Good pictures, the race track sure is close to Surfers Paradise.
Are these from a while ago?
And what is the funny looking colouration in the water, it looks like 2 ship wrecks.

Yeah, those photos are pretty old. Q1 hasn't even started construction in them. Skyline tower was only just taking off. My guess would be around 2000.
The thing in the water is an artificial reef. You see, all the sand at Narrowneck was being eroded away, and they had to build it, or else we would have a second access point to the ocean. The project worked fantasically and now provides for scuba divers and surfers.
Ellatur September 15th, 2004, 04:52 AM i think these ARE from a while ago, youcan see that the picture is little low quality.

hehe, what's your rent like?
Ellatur September 15th, 2004, 11:52 PM about $1250 us dollars
Macca-GC December 18th, 2004, 02:25 PM That's about AU$1700. Is that per week or per month?
If it's per week, you could live in Palazzo Versace(6 star hotel--First pic, Far right, Beach-Sheraton Mirage-Seaworld Drive-Palazzo Versace-Marina-Broadwater-Southport).
Ellatur December 20th, 2004, 12:31 AM lol im not that rich
thats per month :)
Macca-GC December 20th, 2004, 12:47 AM Oh, then that's about $400 per week. You could live on Chevron Island, or in one of those apartments for that much.
Macca-GC December 20th, 2004, 12:48 AM What I find really stupid, is that quite often, it's cheaper to get a mortgage than it is to rent.
Why on Earth would you want to rent?
Ellatur December 20th, 2004, 04:29 AM i ask myself that to sometimes, but my parents says otherwise :)
Macca-GC December 20th, 2004, 04:51 AM What? Why don't they want you to own your own home. It's the Great Australian Dream. But then again, you guys are in far a long series of interest rate hikes. 2.5% can't stay.
zztopless December 20th, 2004, 05:19 AM What I find really stupid, is that quite often, it's cheaper to get a mortgage than it is to rent.

Are you serious?
How old are you mate, because the general impression I get from reading your posts is that you have an EXTREMELY limited, conservative, world view. Saying you find it stupid that people rent? I mean, wtf??? I'd like to see you as a 21 year old uni gradutate, or even as a 21 year old that has been working for three years, get a home loan.
Just about every god damn thread in the gold coast forum has you as the last poster, with some stupid, irrelevant one sentence reply. No one is impressed by your post count mate, seriously, the last thing we need is a QLD version of Chrisau.
Macca-GC December 20th, 2004, 04:11 PM Let me re-phrase to what I meant. Why on Earth would you want to rent for your whole life?
Have a bloody cry.
Yes, I do have a conservative world view, but it certainly isn't limited.

they don't want me to be out on my own because i haven't even graduated high school yet :)

Exactly!
There are two types of conservative people, ones who actually know what the f**k they're talking about (the rich, greedy businessmen), and ignorant narrow minded poor or middle class ones who think they know what they're talking about.
Macca-GC December 21st, 2004, 06:09 AM As opposed to the single type of socialist: Humanists who against each other, make no progress, send everyone broke and waste everyone's time.

Well that explains it then.

The socialist democracies in Europe seem to be doing fine to me. You keep talking about progress and growth Toadman, but unless we can maek it environmentally sustainable, its all invalid in my opinion.
The main reason I see skyscrapers as the exception, is that I would rather see a small space contain a large amount of commercial, retail or residential space, rather than sprawling out into the suburbs, clearing more land etc.

I am a student who is studying global issues, stuff like politics, environment, third world famine, disease and overpopulation, resources, and global economics. Its quite boring really, but at the same time informative. So I have to say that my idea's on what progress is are very different to yours. I'd be very interested in what you think progress is.

So would I. I don't want endless sprawl. But I live in the real world. Progress is making the lives of the populous happier, and leaving the best legacy possible for generations to come. If progress comes through growth, whether that be outward, or upward, so be it. But I personally would like an equilibrium between the two. i.e. The further we go out, the denser and taller the CBD should become.
Macca-GC January 24th, 2005, 06:20 AM I found this really old aerial photo

Yes, I agree with you there, as much as the environmentalist inside me wishes that we could all live in high rises in the city, I know that will not happen and in all honesty, I would rather live and raise a family in the suburbs myself. But we need to use human intenuity and creativity to find ways to co-exist without continually destroying the planet we live on (and there is no doubt that we are doing this, all us us, everyday, especially in Australia).
More trees in suburban areas for starters (new housing developments seem to just strip the land of all trees unnessecarily and it takes decades to grow back). The biggest problem I have with 'progress' and the way in which human beings are living at the moment (particularly in developed countries) is the massive level of consumption and waste (pollution). There is really no excuse of the level of consumption in the western world, when so many people in thrid world countries are starving. The ironic thing is that we rely on cheap labour from third world countries to support our way of life.
I mean, just take any intro economics unit at uni and they will have no problems explaining that thrid would countries have cheap labour as their most valuable commodity, and this is just seen as the norm.
The problem with a pure market capitalist system is that it inherently breeds inequality. The system simply cannot work if everyone was equal. Think about it, the majority of work done to produce good or provide services in this country are done by people on regular wages and almost all of the profit of their work goes to the few that own the capital. We have the ideas on property and ownership drilled into us from such an early age that most people just cannot get their head around that it is both unnatural and inequitable (it took me ages to even begin to question the fundamentals of capitalism). Anway, thats enough political ranting for me for now, I might go back and fix the inevitable spelling mistakes I just makde later.
Peace.
P.S. I am a 3rd year political science student and have read many many texts, articles etc on the aforementioned topics, so my opinions are based on a lot of personal research, but of course, they are just my opinions and I have no delusions about changing other peoples.
