It is great, we need more like that! Monkey September 15th, 2004, 09:41 AM cool, what is today's space image? It is great, we need more like that! It looks like the Space Elevator which I posted in the "Extreme Engineering" thread... :D Monkey September 15th, 2004, 09:43 AM Here it is ... http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=131291&page=3 Space elevator A space elevator, also known as a space bridge, is in a class of spacecraft propulsion technology concepts that are aimed at improving access to space. A space elevator connects a planet's surface with space via a cable. It is also called a geosynchronous orbital tether or a beanstalk (in reference to the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk). It is one kind of skyhook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyhook_%28structure%29). A space elevator on Earth could permit sending objects and astronauts to space at costs only a fraction of those associated with current means. Constructing one would, however, be a vast project, and the elevator would have to be built of a material that could endure tremendous stress while also being light-weight, cost-effective, and manufactureable. A considerable number of other novel engineering problems would also have to be solved to make a space elevator practical. Today's technology does not meet these requirements. However, optimists say that we could develop the necessary technology by 2008 [1] (http://liftport.com/research2.php) and finish building the first space elevator by 2018. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator http://www.willfox.com/images/space/spaceelevator.jpg Jan September 15th, 2004, 08:01 PM Exellent finding wjfox2002. :) AJphx September 16th, 2004, 12:01 AM oh yeah! thanks wjfox.... Since it is too late for todays header image, it would be nice to reserve the header image for the 9th november for a german one, because the 9th november is possibly the most important day in german history (exclamation of the "Republic of Weimar" 1918; "Reichskristallnacht" - beginning of the chase of jewish citizens 1938; Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989). If it weren't for the first two events, the 9th november would be the real Unity Day. Xtra October 3rd, 2004, 01:05 PM Today's header is extremely lame. Is that a city? (E) Bydgoszcz = 413000 PEOPLE Bydgoszcz, located in the north central part of Poland along the Brda river, is the capital of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie province. One of Poland's major inland ports, the Bydgoszcz Canal, built 1773-1774, links the Brda river with the Notec river, and is part of the larger Vistula-Oder waterway. This canal is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Chartered in 1346, the city developed in the Middle Ages on the site of a prehistoric fort. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became an important trade center. In 1772, it was part of the area taken over by Prussia. In 1919, it was returned to Poland. During World War II, it was occupied by Germany. Despite the damage suffered during World War II, Bydgoszcz has an architectural heritage representing Eclecticism and Art Nouveau dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The best examples of this are to be found on Gdanska, Cieszkowskiego and Mickiewicza streets. This style also dominates the Old Market Square. On the western end of this square, you can find the gothic St Nicolas church, which dates back to the 15th century. The city is not only an important administrative center for the province, but also is a major business center with many financial and insurance companies. Bydgoszcz is one of Poland's leading trade fair centers. As an important educational center, future engineers, medical doctors, humanists and musicians all study at local educational institutions. coth October 14th, 2004, 11:17 PM The problem with great panaram of Moscow resolved! Behold!!! Jakarta 1750 banner in postcard style :) :) :) http://img94.exs.cx/img94/298/banner7.jpg Jakarta used to be called Batavia during the dutch colonial government. I try to be true to the 1700s/low rise/oldies theme.. thus pretty hard to find the right picture I can compose. From left to right - Jakarta Cathedral - Some postcard, no meaning, just for atmosphere  - Some dutch school in old Jakarta - Jakarta Port of Sunda Kelapa (Sundanese Coconut , its true, they use coconut for a port name). - Clement de Jonghe's map of Batavia, 1650 :) very small if compared with the size of Jakarta now. - The VOC headquarter now Jakarta Museum. But it does make the city look enormous. lepied December 7th, 2004, 01:39 PM Here are the best pics ever for Paris la Defense : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_1.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_2.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_3.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_4.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_5.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_6.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_7.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_8.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_9.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_10.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_11.jpg http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lenainmechant/TEMP/SCC/SCC_ladefense_12.jpg Trances December 7th, 2004, 01:51 PM i like 5 best then 8 if in focus :( and 4 then 10 rest dont rate as high jmancuso December 9th, 2004, 11:25 AM I like it, however, I don't know if that's the image of Houston that you might want to give people. It looks like a smoggy, polluted asian city there. But it does make the city look enormous. the thing is that that is not smog becuase that shot was taken in the winter (very little smog then), it was morning and it was rather damp that day so i bet it could be moisture or something...but not smog. at least not in that pic. baqthier December 11th, 2004, 09:58 AM I'm reserving 22nd Dec 2004 for the Malaysian Forum 2nd anniversary ;) EarlyBird December 11th, 2004, 10:04 AM Here are some banners I've stuck together for Manchester in the UK. The first two are my favourites, the remaining four are alternatives. I thought maybe I was the lucky one who'd had a banner yesterday! gm2263 December 11th, 2004, 07:16 PM Guys what about this? This is an unusual view of Athens, Greece and some of the few highrises it has. Quite unusual and certainly doesn't look like it I presume... http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/29410/354944/0/Athens+-+From+Pendeli+-+4+-+Dec04+-+Banner+2.jpg coth December 11th, 2004, 10:40 PM here is my first self made proposal http://*******************/imgs/banner01.jpg Christos7 December 12th, 2004, 01:06 AM Guys what about this? Chuq December 13th, 2004, 11:09 PM Moscow was fantastic ... but I do love Hobart, & it's great that this really Southern City has finally got a show! Good to see Hobart getting a go :) Though there are photos about that show off our (small) scraper skyline as well! Interestingly the picture above shows two parts of the wharf cut and joined together in the middle - in actual fact, the left and right parts should be reversed! I should get out there and take some more pics but I've been saying that for a while now and it hasn't happened :-/ andysimo123 December 14th, 2004, 12:47 AM All of you enjoy todays banner while it lasts!!!!! Today Manchester rules in most things but not all. |
