Agusan Norte delegate is Bb. Palaro 2011

SURIGAO CITY, Mar. 17 (PIA) -- Crowd favorite Kathery Marie Paez of Agusan del Norte delegation was crowned Bb. Palaro 2011, held Monday evening, Mar. 14 at the Provincial Gymnasium.

Paez, a top sports achiever bested the 8 equally-competitive stunners. She received P10,000 pesos cash and trophy. First runner -up was from the Surigao City delegation with P8,000 cash and trophy, Ronica Paler of Caraga Regional Science High School. The second runner-up went to the Surigao del Norte delegation, Marie Angelique Tugay, she received P6,000 cash and trophy.

Special awards were given to Yumi Ann Jumalon from Dinagat delegation for Best in Neo-Ethnic Attire and Best in Sportswear. Best in Talent and Best in Gown all went to Kathery Marie Tupaz of Agusan del Norte.

Around two thousand spectators witnessed the said prestigious event. The activity was also witnessed by no less than Surigao del Norte Governor Sol Matugas with the full support of League of Municipal Mayors of the Phils. (LMP) President and Bacuag Mayor Sheila Mae Cebedo and Senior Board Member Myna Madelo Romarate. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)

Palarong Pampook 2011 Update: Agusan del Norte archer hits 1st spot

SURIGAO CITY, March 17(PIA) - Hawk-like vision and unparalleled accuracy empowered Bryan Juanico of the Agusan del Norte delegation to snag the 1st place of both the 50 m and 30 m target shooting in the field of archery, held at the Caraga Regional Science High School Oval Tuesday, March 15 at 7:30 am.

Juanico, along with 18 other archers from the delegations of Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat and Surigao del Sur, competed for 12 ends in the 50 m distance target shooting. Juanico’s stance and drawing power took him to an early lead halfway through the round with a partial score of 110. This was more than doubled when the game ended with Bryan Juanico having 222 as his final score. The 2nd and 3rd place were won by Joeciano Nicholas Mojica of Surigao del Sur and Michael Cumahig of Agusan del Norte.

In the 30 m shooting competition, Juanico concentrated even more to surpass his own personal record of 311 points. But some of his shots were starting to miss, however, Juanico still managed to get to the top of the game in the 12th end with a score of 269. His teammates, Michael Cumahig and Dennis Rosell Tupaz, got the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

fyi... EMCO plywood corporation was named and own by Sta Ines before and this company had huge Sta Ines Gymnasium and private Airport along the shoreline, right now its already abandoned..

The long wait is finally over, when the Cabadbaran City Supermarket was formally opened to serve not only the great multitude of Cabadbaranon consumers but also the consumers from nearby municipalities. After months of selling in temporarily installed stalls because of the blaze that ate the old public market last April 2010, the vendors are now finally housed in a modern market facility which is more convenient for all the selling and buying public.

The Caraga State University – Cabadbaran Campus Playground was the main venue of this year’s Council-Wide and Invitational Jamborette where more than a thousand scouts, rovers and roverettes together with their teacher scouters from different public and private elementary, secondary schools and even colleges from all over Agusan del Norte and the City of Butuan have actively participated even with the not so cooperative weather especially during the first day. The jamborette which ran from February 22-26, 2011 which showcased a series of survival activities and challenges including a variety of community services was also actively joined by a contingent from the City of Davao. As the motto of the Boy Scout’s goes “Laging Handa”, everyone did their share in working as a team to overcome the different obstacles and solve the practical problems for the different challenges, one good way of motivating and enhancing the social and leadership skill of every boy scouts.

Senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri conducted a marathon visit to the Province of Agusan del Norte and its municipalities last February 17, 2011 for the distribution of the Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) worth P500, 000.00 each for his projects for all the eleven component municipalities of the province. My brother did it once, he left his car for two days at the pier compound parked with all the other vehicles left by some owners as well. when he came back, nihatag ra man daw siya ug 50.00 sa guard :lol: but that was 5 years ago na yata, maybe by this time, naa nay mga changes, basi mas strick na with the parking fee, basi per hour na hehehe...

World TB Day set to launch in Buenavista

BUTUAN CITY, Mr. 23 (PIA) – The Agusan del Norte Provincial Health Office will launch the “World TB Day” on March 25 in barangay Sacol, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.

According to provincial health officer Dr. Elizabeth N. Campado, the launching of the “World TB Day” with the theme “Isulong ang Laban sa TB, Malusog na Kabataan, Pag-asa ng Bayan” is aimed to increase awareness on tuberculosis in adults and children especially those who are TB-symptomatics.

Prior to the launching, a motorcade will be conducted around barangay poblacion in the municipality of Buenavista. Press conference will then follow after the launching.

The launching will be attended by the municipal officials of Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, barangay Sacol officials, grades 5 and 6 pupils of Buenavista Central School, rural health unit personnel, Department of Education (DepEd) principals, supervisors, and nurses and municipal health officers and provincial health nurses of the neighboring municipalities of Carmen and Nasipit, adult and children TB-symptomatics, media and health officers.

BUTUAN CITY, Mar. 25 (PIA) -- Lumad residents of barangay Cuyago, Jabonga, Agusan del Norte expressed their gratitude to the Regional Development Council - Gender and Development Coordinating Committee (RDC-GADCC) Caraga who visited them and provided medical and dental services to the community.

Imelda Cabongcabong, a lumad resident of the said barangay commends the efforts of the GADCC member-agencies for providing them the free medical, dental mission and mass feeding with relief goods.

“Nagpasalamat kami sa gobyerno sa paghatag ug bili kanamo nga mga lumad. Salamat usab sa libreng tambal ug pagkaon (We thank the government for showing us that they care and for providing us these free medicines and relief goods),” Cabongcabong stressed.

Also, Punong barangay Vicmar Tillo highly appreciated the time and efforts of the GADCC member-agencies and for the successful conduct of the free medical, dental mission.

“Thank you so much to all our partner agencies, we hope to work with you again,” Tillo said.

Also, the Department of Health (DOH) Caraga Regional Office headed by Dir. Leonita Gorgolon turned over the 100 boxes of Amoxicilin; 10 boxes of Glibenclanide (for diabetic patients); 100 boxes of multivitamins; and assorted used clothings to the Punong Barangay Vicmar Tillo.

GADCC co-chair Edna Hontiveros acknowledges the joined efforts of various agencies for the conduct of the free medical, dental mission for the lumad tribe in the said barangay.

“This activity we are conducting now is in line with the women’s month celebration, and with this we want to laud the existence of our Lumad friends. We want you to know that we care for you and the government hopes to continue our partnership in the coming years,” Hontiveros added.

Meanwhile, the general public is also encouraged to participate in the sportsfest and culmination program of the GADCC member-agencies on March 31, 2011 at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Office here.

After months of selling in temporarily installed stalls because of the blaze that ate the old public market last April 2010, the vendors are now finally housed in a modern market facility which is more convenient for all the selling and buying public.

Expanded Garantisadong Pambata campaign set to launch in Agusan del Norte

BUTUAN CITY, April 2 (PIA) – An expanded Garantisadong Pambata campaign, a health program that ensures a package of health services given to children, will be launched in Tubay, Agusan del Norte on April 4 (Monday).

The launch is spearheaded by the Integrated Provincial Health Office of Agusan del Norte in partnership with the Center for Health Development – Caraga Region.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Campado, Provincial Health Officer, the expanded Garantisadong Pambata, will now be offered all year round and will include appropriate service and promotion even for schoolage children.

“The expanded GP promotes a set of healthy behaviors including exclusive breastfeeding for six months, immunization among infants, vitamin A supplementation and de-worming every six months, education on proper hand washing, brushing of teeth regularly, proper toilet use, and keeping homes tobacco smoke-free,” Dr. Campado said.

With a rallying call “Kalusugan ng Bata, Sigurado. Basta i-GP mo! Kahit saan, kahit kailan, kahit sino, kayang alagaan ang kalusugan ng kabataang Pilipino,” the DOH aims to make the expanded GP synonymous with healthy behaviors and practices.

“Following the behaviors stated in GP has been proven to be effective in reducing morbidity and mortality among children,” said Dr. Campado.

The expanded GP now also involves non-traditional community outlets like day care centers, schools and workplaces.

The GP launch in the municipality of Tubay will also gather around 70 elementary pupils who will pledge to take responsibility through the “Panatang Maka-GP” while local government units and other agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Department of Education (DepEd) will sign the GP declaration to show their support and cooperation to the health campaign.

The GP program which includes vitamin A supplementation targets at least 95 percent of children from six months to five years old.

The vitamin A supplementation will be integrated in DOH’s combined measles-rubella supplemental immunization activity (MRSIA) this April.

The door-to-door campaign will also target municipalities under the DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), a poverty reduction and social development strategy which provides Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) to extremely poor households to improve their health, nutrition and education particularly of children aged 0-14.

Meanwhile, Tubay Vice-Mayor Fidel E. Garcia said that the launching of the new GP is very timely as they continue to intensify their efforts to promote health in the province as well as in the overall efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

With the theme: “Kalusugan ng Bata, Sigurado. Basta i-GP mo! Kahit saan, kahit kailan, kahit sino, kayang alagaan ang kalusugan ng kabataang Pilipino,” the Department of Health (DoH) aims to make the expanded GP synonymous with healthy behaviors and practices.

“Following the behaviors stated in GP has been proven to be effective in reducing morbidity and mortality among children,” said Campado.

The expanded GP now also involves non-traditional community outlets like day-care centers, schools, and workplaces.

The GP launch in the municipality of Tubay will also gather around 70 elementary pupils who will pledge to take responsibility through the “Panatang Maka-GP” while local government units (LGUs) and other agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Education (DepEd) will sign the GP declaration to show their support and cooperation to the health campaign.

The GP program, which includes Vitamin A supplementation, targets at least 95 percent of children from six months to five years old.

The Vitamin A supplementation will be integrated in DoH’s combined measles-rubella supplemental immunization activity (MRSIA) this April.

The door-to-door campaign will also target municipalities under the DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), a poverty reduction and social development strategy which provides Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) to extremely poor households to improve their health, nutrition, and education particularly of children aged zero to 14.

Meanwhile, Tubay Vice Mayor Fidel E. Garcia said the launching of the new GP is very timely as they continue to intensify their efforts to promote health in the province as well as in the overall efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

LCP loses cityhood case; SC makes it final final final

THE Supreme Court, voting 7-6, on Tuesday ruled with finality on the constitutionality of the cityhood laws converting 16 municipalities into cities.

The Court en banc denied the appeal of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) seeking to block the conversion of the 16 towns into cities, citing as reason the towns’ inability to comply with the Local Government Code’s requirement that towns should have an annual income of P100 million before becoming cities.

The SC decision will allow the conversion of the following towns into cities: Batac, Ilocos Norte; Tabuk, Kalinga; Tayabas, Quezon; Baybay, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; Bogo, Naga, and Carcar in Cebu; Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; El Salvador, Misamis Oriental; Mati, Davao Oriental; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur; and Lamitan, Basilan.

The creation of the 16 new cities means more cities will divide among themselves the national government’s Internal Revenue Allotments, effectively reducing the IRAs of the 122 existing cities.

Among the justices who voted to declare the cityhood laws constitutional were Chief Justice Renato Corona, Associate Justices Presbitero Velasco Jr., Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, Lucas Bersamin, Roberto Abad, Jose Perez, and Jose Mendoza.

Mendoza previously voted against the cityhood laws.

Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Martin Villarama Jr., Ma. Lourdes Sereno, Conchita Carpio-Morales, Arturo Brion and Diosdado Peralta maintained their position that the cityhood laws are unconstitutional. Carpio penned the Nov. 18, 2008 decision which said so.

Associate Justices Mariano del Castillo and Antonio Eduardo Nachura abstained anew on the resolution of the issue.

Last March 9, the high court was asked anew to reconsider its decision on the matter after declaring the cityhood laws unconstitutional in a ruling issued on Aug. 24, 2010.

In its Feb. 15, 2011 resolution, the Court reversed itself for the third time on a vote of 7-6-2, and reinstated its Dec. 21, 2009 decision affirming the constitutionality of the 16 cityhood laws passed by the 11th Congress.

Petitioners LCP, in its motion for reconsideration, contested the SC’s declaration of constitutionality of the cityhood laws, saying the tribunal had lost jurisdiction to promulgate the Feb. 15 resolution because there was no longer any actual case or controversy to settle.

It said the Nov. 18, 2008 decision saying the cityhood laws were unconstitutional had become final by operation of law as well as by explicit order of the SC. LCP claimed that the entry of judgment was issued on May 21, 2009.

Hidden hideaway in Caraga Region

In the province of Caraga Region in Mindanao, there is a hidden hideaway called Amontay Beach Resort which has its soft opening last August 5. The resort boasts of crystal-clear waters and powdery sands, thus earning the reputation as “Little Boracay” of the South. Its owner and general manager, Henry L. Tan, aims to promote the province’s tourism by operating the first-ever Bali-inspired Hotel and Restaurant by the Sea in the heart of Nasipit, Agusan Del Norte.

Tan is also the owner of Goat 2 Geder Hotel and Restaurant located in Montalban Street, Butuan City. Starting out as a small eatery in 2004, it is named after its special recipes out of goat’s meat or “kambing,” Its delectable cuisines such as kilawin, kaldereta, up and down or sinigang na ulo at paa ng kambing get the patronage of people from different cities. In 2007, he officially opened Goat 2 Geder Hotel and Restaurant to accommodate more customers who want a taste of their famed dishes. The establishment can be reached via a 45-minute drive from Amontay Beach Resort.

Providing a means of transport to its customers, Tan recently sought a partnership with Foton Motor Philippines to acquire the Foton Mini-Coach bus. The 34-seater vehicle comfortably transports guests from the airport, pier, hotel and restaurant to Amontay (and vice versa) with a lot of room for luggages room. The Foton Mini-Coach is especially enjoyed by big groups visiting the area. “Guests are transported from the business center to the beach resort quickly, comfortably, safely, and economically,” Tan says.

With Amontay Beach Resort fully opening this November and the Foton Mini-Coach as its official transport, it is expected to be one of the premier destinations in the South.
