Suyao AGUSAN DEL SUR, March 18 -- Agusan del Sur Gov. Adolph Edward “Eddiebong” Plaza has committed P6 Million for livelihood projects of women’s organizations all over the province upon submission of their proposals to his office for consideration and approval. “I want you to know, that the fund is there. What we ask from you are your plans and programs so that you can start your projects and establish a better and decent living thru sustainable livelihood programs. The provincial government is more than willing to extend financial assistance for your capital including the marketing of your products,” Gov. Plaza said. The funds, according to Gov. Plaza, will be taken from the P30 Million collection of the provincial environmental sustainability fee. “From that P30M, we will set aside 20 percent of it amounting to P6 Million, and that will be all yours for your start-up capital,” Gov. Plaza added. The commitment came after Gov. Plaza delivered his message during the culmination program of the women’s month celebration today, March 18, 2011 at the Gov. D.O. Plaza Sports Complex covered court in Patin-ay, Prosperidad. Together with Sangguniang Panlalawigan members Nestor Corvera, Samuel Tortor and Jose Bunilla who supported the commitment of the governor, Gov. Eddiebong Plaza said he wants that women in Agusan del Sur should be more empowered and productive in order to uplift the economic condition of their families instead of just staying at home and gossiping with their neighbors. The culmination program was participated by some 600 women all over the province. The program includes folk dance contest and search for Miss Agusan del Sur 2011. Suyao www.pia.gov.ph AGUSAN DEL SUR, mARCH 17 -- The Philippine Red Cross Agusan del Sur (PRC-AdS) Chapter today transferred to its temporary office at the Gov. D.O. Plaza Government Center in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, while the fund for land preparation of the new building will be released within this month. According to PRC-AdS Medical Technologist Julie Lapides, the provincial government has already approved the release of P1M for the filling-up of the area where the new building of the Red Cross will be constructed. The land, with an area of 800 sq. meters is also donated by the provincial government, including the building that will cost P5 Million. “PRC-AdS has to transfer to temporary office at the provincial capitol and soon to its new building because of the expansion of the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital and as everybody can see, it has already started its construction. Another 50 beds capacity building will soon rise right at the area where the PRC and the old barangay hall was located,” PRC administrator Crystelle Basan said. According to Basan, she asked Dr. Esparagoza, Provincial Health Officer, if it is possible that they temporarily occupy a space at the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital, but when they look at the space, it cannot accommodate the facilities that the PRC-AdS have at present, so they have to temporarily occupy the office that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office DENR-PENRO) has vacated. The PRC-AdS has been a close partner of the provincial government in life saving and relief and recovery operations. Last year, the Provincial Blood Coordinating Council led by the PRC-AdS has exceeded its target on blood collection with 2,693 bags against the target of 2,500. According to record by the PRC-AdS, the blood collection mostly came from field donation where a team of medical technologists from the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital (DOPMH) led by Lolita Dumanon and PRC Agusan del Sur Chapter led by medical technologist Julie Lapides regularly conducting monthly blood collection by municipality. On record, field donation reached 2,428 bags, while replacement reached 120 bags, walk-in donors with 68 and patients directed to produce the needed blood, 77 bags. It was also learned that the provincial government will look for technical assistance for their livelihood projects to grow through sustainable livelihood programs. Agusan del Sur Gov. Adolph Edward “Eddie Bong” G. Plaza assured that the fund is already there, ready for release. He said the assistance to the women’s group is also part of his priority agenda under his 10-point priority program, to alleviate poverty and establish a better and more decent living, especially those in far-flung village communities. “What I want to ask only to the women’s group are their plans and program so that they can start immediately their projects,” said the young provincial Chief Executive. According to PAO chief Armando Lagumbay, the PAO will be spending some P5 million for diversified farming alone for the second quarter, and another P5 million for agricultural enhancement for growth and productivity. “One of the projects that we will give more attention this second quarter is the multi-purpose drying pavement (MPDP) that will be scattered in selected municipalities province-wide,” Lagumbay said. D.A. dvelops tea industry in Zambo ZAMBOANGA CITY (PNA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA) said it is developing the tea industry in this city. DA officials said it was less than two decades ago when Leodegario Garcia stumbled across Ceylon Tea while attending a seminar at the City of Pines. Impressed by its delicate flavor and aromatic taste, he collected half a kilo of the marble-like tea seeds from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) at the Baguio Experiment Station, and took it home to La Paz, this city. “I thought since Baguio and La Paz have similarly cool weathers, the tea seeds would thrive and grow abundantly back home,” Garcia said. He was right, because 85 percent of the seeds sprouted and blossomed after they were planted in potted plastic bags. Women's Month fete highlighted KORONADAL CITY (PIA) – This year's observance of women's month is expected to improve women empowerment through the implementation of programs as guaranteed by the laws protecting women's rights. Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 12 Assistant Regional Rirector Gemma Rivera said the objectives of this year's celebration are geared towards increasing public awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which gives premium to women's welfare. CRISMUNDO March 11, 2011, 2:18pm PATIN-AY, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur – In an effort to recover the losses brought about by floods that hit twice early this year in this land-locked province, the government has allocated P20 million for diversified farming system, it was announced recently. It was also learned that this farming support was taken from the provincial budget so farmers can immediately recover and produce the food requirements of the province and nearby areas. Agusan del Sur is considered as the “food basket” in the Caraga region. This diversified farming system is to give more weight to rice, corn and vegetable production, which were badly affected by the recent floods. This diversified farming system called Boosted Utilization of Grains in Agusan Sur (BUGAS) which has various projects like pump irrigation system open source/ shallow tube well (PISOS/STW), packet post harvest facilities identified as combine harvester and packet post harvest facilities. For the fruits and vegetable, production, PAO has programmed seedling bank and other starting projects and other inland fishery project, veterinary projects and livelihood employment and other assistance program, and rehabilitation of water supply level III.. The PAO will also establish the Agusan Marsh Ecolodge with its target of completion this year. The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) here has also set seven programs and projects this year as priority to spur the economic growth of the farming sector. These priority projects are part of Gov. Its capital is Prosperidad and borders, from the north clockwise, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental. In 2000 the province had a population of 559,294. This represented an increase of 44,558 persons or 7.96 % since 1995. The annual population growth rate was 1.79 %. There were 103,637 households with an average household size of 5.39 persons. The population density was 62 persons per square kilometer with a male to female ratio of 107:100. The dominant religion is Roman Catholicism (79% of the population). Other major religions include the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Aglipay, Iglesia ni Cristo, United Pentecostal Church, Born Again and the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. Five tribal groups are found in the province: Aeta, Mamanwa, Bagobo, Higaonon, and Manobo. The Manobos live along the national highway and river towns towards the boundary with the Compostela Valley. The Higaonons live mostly on the western side of Agusan River, generally in Esperanza towards the boundary with Bukidnon. The Agusan del Sur population is predominantly composed of immigrants from the Visayas. Intermarriages between immigrants and natives have pulled down the percentage of the lumad stock. Based on the 1995 census, 75% of the labor force is engaged in agriculture and forestry. Rice, corn and fruits are among the major agricultural crops. Agusan del Sur has a labor force of 287,000 people, mostly in the agriculture and forestry sector. Several colleges, including a university, add to a well educated, highly trainable, English-speaking workforce. The province also keeps abreast of technological developments elsewhere, with some of these educational establishment offering skills development courses in Information Technology. Rice occupies the largest cultivated area, with 243.85 square kilometres of irrigated area with a yield of 410 t/km², and rainfed rice with an area of about 165.73 km² with a yield of 300 t/km². The province's rice production has the estimated capacity to feed 1,072,456 people—far more than the provinces population. Ironically, rice insufficiency persists, especially in the upland and hard to reach barangays. Corn plantations cover 255.25 km² for both white and yellow corn with a total production of 55,767 t in 2000 with surplus corn grits of 31,106 MT enough to feed more than 2 million people, four times greater than the province's population. Banana is another abundant crop covering an area of 127.45 km² and could be seen everywhere but not in conventional plantation form. Banana chips are also processed in the province. Oil palm plantation covers 118 km². The plantation is a Malaysian-Filipino joint venture, with agrarian reform beneficiaries as land owners. Crude oil is processed in the sites of Rosario, and Trento. Coconut trees are widespread in the province, covering 393.36 km². Despite of the government's efforts to increase poultry and livestock production, deficits in meat supply persist. Processed poultry and beef are imported from Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City. Agusan del Sur is highly dependent on Surigao del Sur and other provinces for the supply of marine products. However, the province has abundant supply of fresh water fish like mudfish, catfish and tilapia. 1 City and 13 Municipalities: * Bayugan City * Bunawan * Esperanza * La Paz * Loreto * Prosperidad * Rosario * San Francisco * San Luis * Santa Josefa * Sibagat * Talacogon * Trento * Veruela http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agusan_del_Sur regjeex March 21st, 2011, 08:04 AM Mura sad og Gaisano ang Central Warehouse San Franz... :D pero murag mo qualify na sila sunod in terms of population and land area.. i dont know about the income... :) qualified na ba ni sila nga mahimong city? regjeex March 21st, 2011, 09:23 AM Nice Photos of San Francisco... WHAT TO BUY: This center sells a lot of goods - from small souvenirs to Manobo-inspired beadwork to native pillows to lamps to local furniture! Make sure to buy a replica of the Golden Tara (aka the Golden Image of Agusan) and/ or mini Balangay boats, the most ancient sea vessels found in the Philippines. NOTE: Although this center sells local furniture, they do not take care of the delivery. DESCRIPTION: The Tourism Display Center in Agusan del Sur is a shopping place for souvenirs and "pasalubong". A lot of native and locally-made handicrafts may be found here such as baskets, pillows, jars, lamps, bottles, accessories, pen holders, etc. It also displays indigenous handicrafts of the Manobos. They sell furniture as well but don't take care of the delivery. They do not sell food here, however, so if you're looking for native delicacies, this is not the place for you. OPERATING HOURS: Mondays to Saturdays: 9:00 am-12:00 nn and 2:00 pm-7:00 pm HOW TO GET THERE: Once in Agusan del Sur, just ask the locals to bring you to Barangay Dos in San France. The Tourism Display Center is located right beside the gym. * We passed by for this on our way back to Butuan City (Agusan del Norte) from Surigao del Sur. We hired a van for P5,000 (one whole day) and our driver Kuya Juvy brought us here for shopping. Suyao http://piacaraga.blogspot.com/ AGUSAN DEL SUR, March 22 (PIA) – The “Bantay Konsumo” Task Force has posted two of the most important billboards that will protect the consumers against deceptive, unfair and unconscionable sale acts or practices of the business sector. Strategically posted at the entrance of San Francisco public market is the billboard bearing the eight rights of consumers, while at the entrance of the wet market and vegetable section stands the billboard bearing the prevailing prices of common commodities. “Our objective in posting these billboards is to promote and encourage fair, honest and equitable relations among parties in customer transactions. Hence, during our meeting with “Bantay Konsumo” task force, we prioritized the posting of these billboards in strategic places at the San Francisco public market for other municipalities to follow, and we hope these projects will harmonize the relationship between the consumers and the business sector,” Cherry dela Pena, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) “Bantay Konsumo” focal person said. The eight consumers’ rights written in the first billboard are first: The right to basic needs, where everyone should have enough food, clothing, shelter, good health and education in order to have a good life. Second, the right to have good food, that consumers be protected against harmful food, destructive to the body; third, the right to know, that consumers must be knowledgeable in order to be protected against wrong information brought by advertisements; fourth, the right to choose, that consumers must have the right to chose the products and the services they need; fifth, the right to be heard, that consumers have the right to express their thoughts, and be included in formulating and implementing the policies of the government in line with the rights of consumers; sixth, the right to put in place the needed products or services, so that defective products can be repaired or returned to the supplier if needed; seventh, the right to be taught as buyers, so that they will be knowledgeable of the products and their quality and the eighth, the right to live in a healthy environment, where a customer should know they have the right to live in a safe, clean and peaceful community. On the other billboard, posted are prices of basic commodities, daily updated by the market supervisor. Suyao BUTUAN CITY, March 25 (PIA) -- The search and rescue Agusan del Sur team (SARAS) displayed their skills in life-saving and safe evacuation of patients during the fire drill conducted right at the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital (DOPMH) in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection and the DOPMH management recently. Roberto Natividad, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center, (PDRRMC) said the provincial government, by order of Gov. Adolph Edward “Eddiebong” Plaza, has intensified the trainings of volunteers who compose the SARAS in order to skillfully and timely respond to any calamities that will hit the province. “In this fire drill, we brought along with us two fire trucks assigned in the province while the BFP brought one. Automatically, when we came over to participate in the fire drill, we pull out the boxes containing our equipments and bring them along with us. Just like when we respond to real emergency and calamity, without any time wasted, we jumped off and responded,” Natividad said. Upon the sound of the siren, the three fire trucks, packed with uniformed SARAS volunteers and firemen, rushed to the DOPMH together with the rescue vehicles carrying the equipments of the SARAS. In precise movement and speed, the team proceeded to their areas of responsibilities and expertly handled the fractured and wounded dummy victims of the fire. In a few minutes, dummy patients with tourniquets were carried out on stretchers and some by rescuers using gliding ropes. These ‘victims’ were immediately attended by the doctors and nurses waiting at the assigned and secured holding area. Present during the drill were DOPMH chief of hospital Dr. Joel Esparagoza, F/Insp. Danilo Castor, Dr. Elmore Lumpay and Dr. Lorelyn Pastor who led the first aid team, nurses from the DOPMH and SARAS, technical members of the SARAS volunteers, the police and the media. Being the front liners during emergencies and calamities, SARAS has 26 nurse members serving as medical first responders and around 250 trained volunteers. Gov. Eddiebong Plaza has ordered the construction of a P7 Million worth of building with facilities for the SARAS to occupy and at the same time, will become the center of the PDRRMC. According to Engr. Noel Nonan, TESDA Competency Assessment Certification focal person, the assessment will last until April 1st for the walk-in industry workers and the graduating students of short courses program of TESDA. Engr. Nonan said, a maximum of ten candidates will undergo the assessment daily and on the last day, April 1, certification for those who pass the assessment will immediately be distributed. “As we all know, there are thousands that will graduate this coming closing of the semester, and will be seeking employment. According to reports, although job openings are plenty, many courses of our coming graduates do not match the job vacacies that are mostly technical. What President Noynoy Aquino wants is for the government to offer courses that will fit the need of employers, and that is what TESDA are doing. We see to it that after the students’ completion of the training, they can immediately land a job,” Engr. Nonan said. TESDA are now calling on those who are interested to avail of the free competency program to grab the opportunity because there are still vacant slots awaiting them. All they have to do, according to Engr. Nonan, is to visit the TESDA office for more information and to comply with the requirements so they can immediately join the free competency program. “This program has caught the attention of Gov. Eddiebong Plaza, so he gave us his all-out support for this. The provincial government never hesitated to give its share, and because of that, this program became possible,” Engr. Nonan added. TESDA has been offering trainings like welding, auto mechanic and many other short courses for years now. The trainings include allowances of the scholars and even job placement. Suyao AGUSAN DEL SUR, April 1 -- The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has reported some P215 Million worth of damages on irrigation infrastructure caused by the January 3 and February 17, 2011 floods that hit Agusan del Sur. According to Engr. Jose Alvaran, Senior Project Engineer of NIA in Agusan del Sur, the damages range from irrigation canals, dams and service roads that lead to the barangays being served by the irrigation system. “For Andanan river irrigation system (RIS) alone, our records show that some 450 meters of dams affecting 500 hectares of rice lands were damaged during the occurrence of the two floods. Another major damage is the Gibong river irrigation system affecting another hundreds of hectares that will cost us around P100 Million to repair. The rest are communal dams serving hundreds of hectares also," Alvaran said. Reacting to the reports of NIA, Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza suggested that NIA should also include the number of farmers affected, and not only the dams, the canals and the service roads in preparing their reports. Engr. Alvaran also said NIA Agusan del Sur have only accomplished 86.25 percent of their 2010 projects because of bad weather condition. But Alvaran said, works are on-going in order to complete the delayed projects scheduled for completion last year. This year, Engr. Alvaran said, NIA Agusan del Sur has lined up five major projects to supplement the existing irrigation systems. DENR Caraga Regional Executive Director Leonardo R. Sibbaluca said the seizure of the illegal lumber followed a three day surveillance operation made by the task force responsible for effecting Executive Order No. 23, an order issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III. The order is for a total log ban in natural and residual forests nationwide. “There has been no let-up in our campaign against illegal-logging in these off-limits areas of the forest since the ban took effect on February 1 this year," Sibbaluca said. The seized undocumented lumber was being piled up by a group of hired workers when the task force moved in to catch the suspected illegal loggers at a secluded place in the barangay known as a “hot spot" of illegal logs in Agusan del Sur. The report said the workers scampered off in different directions when they sensed the presence of government operatives. According to Director Sibbaluca, this area could be the same location where the apprehended illegal lumber-loaded 10-wheeler trucks were intercepted by the DENR operatives at the Macapagal bridge in Butuan City on Tuesday. The Legal Division of the DENR headed by Atty. Claudio A. Nistal is preparing to file necessary charges against the illegal loggers. They are to be charged with violation of PD 705. The charges are to be filed with the proper court. — AYA/TJD, GMA News http://www.gmanews.tv/story/216791/regions/p700t-worth-of-illegal-lumber-apprehended-in-agusan-sur jsl_bxu1206 April 4th, 2011, 10:41 AM Governor’s Cup starts today by David M. Suyao PROSPERIDAD, April 4 -- The 13 municipalities and the lone city in Agusan del Sur will once again prove who among their youths have the stamina and skills in playing basketball in the 7th Governor’s Cup which starts today, April 4. Municipal delegation and players from the northern part of the province converged at the municipal hall of Prosperidad while delegation from the southern part converged at San Francisco and simultaneously held a motorcade to the D.O. Plaza Sports Complex (DOPSC) banging their drums and blowing their bugles along the way, for the opening of the tournament. At the D.O. Plaza Sports Complex grandstand, Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza, together with other provincial officials and guest, awaits the arrival of the 14 delegation. The delegation in full basketball uniform for the players and colourful costumes for the cheering teams with their muses and candidates for the Miss Governor’s Cup 2011 their banners waving paraded through the sports complex as their group was called. Sangguniang Panlalawigan member and tournament director Gilbert Elorde opened the program, exhorting the delegation to abide by the rules set by the sports committee in line with the general rules of basketball. “We, the chief executives of the 13 municipalities and the lone city of Agusan del Sur, sincerely support this program of our governor because we believe this is one way that we can make our province united and even stronger. In every tournament, there are discontentment, but we have agreed that we settle everything peacefully and with honor,” SP member Elorde said. Delivering his message after declaring the formal opening of the tournament and the lighting of the sportsmanship urn, Gov. Plaza said he is proud that although no one from Agusan del Sur have been chosen to play in the Philippine Basketball Association, many are already playing in distinguished teams in the national level. “Believing in the spirit of sportsmanship and the use of knowledge and skills in every tournament, I always look forward that our youth in Agusan del Sur will always be good citizens of our country, with good moral character, ready to face the challenges that will come along their way. Winning is a gracious feeling, but loosing and admitting defeat is noble. To all the teams, good luck. And to everybody, please enjoy,” Gov. Plaza said. A cheering competition was held before the two games that will be played this afternoon at the DOPSC covered court. Basketball games will be played in every municipality. The tournament was divided into two groups, for the two political districts of the province. Winners of the two districts will compete for overall championship. Players are only limited to 18 years old and below. Every team can have two import players of their choice.
