Because my family friends never had the foggiest of how much there is outside of London, and were dissapointed that they werent told before about the rest of the UK, and im some respects i was to.

For instance, have you ever heard of the Lake District in North-west England?

Cool! There are so many lovely towns outside London! But I do realize that all these towns are without a bit of modern civilization. If you go back to 18th century I bet you would notice no difference at all in how these towns look. Maybe that's the reason London overshadows them all.

/\ - I think cars and satellite dishes might give it away :):)

There is of course the odd new building in the smaller cathedral and market town outside London - but on the whole they have kept their old buildings - which i think is far better than knocking them down to build new, bland buildings of Glass and stainless steel, or even worse - Concrete.

There are lots of other European cities that have kept their old buildings well preserved - the biggest example is Paris.

People never believe us when people talk about the english countryside.

We all remember those gorgeous summers in the fields.

God I wish I could go back to when I was a child. Life was good then,

I still firmly believe, and i always will that England and Britian is the most beautiful country. There is so much in sucha samll amount of space. Castle to Roman Ruins, Hill forts, Man we even have old Glacial peaks which are great for trecking.

And im just so dissapointed to hear from abroad that England is not publisised hardly outside London.

Very Upsetting.

Any of you guys who want to come over, please dont just limit yourself to the city :)

ROFL...you get the "Rayman hyperbole insult of the day" award...really, what's your axe to grind w/the UK? first it's the "Toronto's better than London" comments, now this...

just wait until my Durham thread; sure it's preserved in its medeaval atmosphere, but other than that, well, it's been updated, and new buildings integrated into the downtown, too, including a mall.

no, i don't wonder what's outside of London in the UK b/c i've seen a lot of it. :) and there's a lot i haven't seen that i want to, so i'll be back to see it (mainly north Scotland.)

the biggest suprise of my trip was what a great city Glasgow is, and how many Americans think/thought of it as a dump and prefer the "more historic" and touristy Edinburgh.

-

thanks in part to my school having a summer program in Durham.

Damn, England looks pretty sweet. If I ever have enough money, I need to make my way to Europe someday.

I'm embarassed to say that I don't know this, but how are Britain, England, and the UK related? And how does Wales, Ireland, and Scotland figure into that?

beautiful pictures of England....

it is true what the Thread is talking about...at least where I live (Mexico), we only recognize Londonas an amazing city.... but very few about the countryside..... only Liverpool, because of the Beatles...and Manchester, because of the United soccer team....

but indeed all England is a great country...

Hi ... first of, thanks for your response.

Secondly -> The UK "United Kingdom", is made up of 4 main constituancies. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is also GB "Great Britain".

Ireland are thier seperate country, bar the North, whcih is why the IRA is around.

The only reason why at International level, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland play as different states is because they struck a deal with FIFA ect to play seperately as founder emembers of the game.

I still dont know exactly :( lol but thats the rough jist of it. i think :)

Of course I think beyond London! I've been beyond London! The U.K. Is a fabulous country with much to offer. I haven't been to Wales or N.I. yet, but I would certainly love to explore the former. I must admit, however--to the disappointment of English forumers--that in my opinion, the best part of your island lies north of Hadrian's Wall.

I think that you exaggerate! Lots of the larger cities eg Birmingham and Manchester have lots of modern buildings. The vast majority of smaller historic towns like the one I live in (Shrewsbury) have modern conveniences and facilities (multiplex cinemas, sporting facilities, modern shopping centres etc) but they usually try to build these while maintaining the historic nature of the town. If you went back to the 18th century you would see a huge difference!

One thing that I really don't like about small town Britain is the unimaginative and bland modern residential suburbs, estate after estate of brick boxes that look pretty much the same from one end of the country to the other.

If you like mountains i dont blame you, but for the green valleys, snowcapped peaks in winter and cities, i have to stick with England.

Trecking, is great in all places, wales probably more so, as i ahve never been trecking in Scotland, only snow-boarding.

Northern Ireland, never been but if it resembles Ireland, im proud to call it part of the UK.

Yeah well not everyone knows all about UK cities apart from the obvious ones like Manchester. I thought it would be good to show the other under-rated cities e.g Sheffield, Nottingham, Bradford, Cardiff and Bristol etc.

rofl hahahahaaaaa!! thats the touristy areas mate! they keep some towns like that so they look nice to tourists, as that is what their local economy depends on. There are many big and modern british cities, not just london. the reason london overshadows them all is because almost all promotional material is focused entirely on london, and most government spending is in london. the other cities constantly miss out. of course, londo0n is the capital and home to 10-18 million ppl so its going to need a lot of money, and the 2 biggest airports are in london as well so thats where most international visitors see first, but its still massively lopsided.
