Just 45buses at Uppillipalayam depot? If i am correct Tiruppur, Mettupalayam, Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Sathy, Erode, Salem buses are maintained here only. So only 45 fleet they have?

I got this info through RTI. I think it is the smallest one. One can easily see it from Avinashi road Fly over. Many moffusil route buses are now getting maintained in Pollachi and other depots. Dhandapani or Kumaran can tell us better.
chidambaram_mech04 March 20th, 2011, 04:40 PM There are totally 247 Routes operated by TNSTC Coimbatore within Coimbatore City. Also there are private buses operated in same routes. There are few routes in which only private buses are operated. So there should be around 260 different routes. Besides there are mini buses operated in outskirts. My guess is around 700-800 buses and minibuses(together) should be operated.

Arul,
Upplilipalayam is one of the smallest depot in CBE. :) But Uppilipalayam handles both Night and Day time buses. So we may not see all buses standing at the depot at same time.

Many moffussil routes got extended to Mettupalayam depot. And few of them to Pollachi. MTP-2 depot operates many long distance buses from Coimbatore to South TN. It also has one UD in service.
MTP-1/2(not sure) operates few SLF city bus services too. One among them is Ukkadam-Press Colony(4D) route. Pollachi-1 depot also operates in city bus service. Gandhipuram/Railway Station-Kinathukadavu service.
KSRaj March 21st, 2011, 09:07 AM Good topic - and thanks for the interesting stats, Chidambaram!
But, many threads for CBE may cause overlaps! We have already seen this in case of MDU - city updates, Transport and also Tamilnadu Buses topics.
Cheers,

skumaran March 21st, 2011, 09:55 AM I got this info through RTI. I think it is the smallest one. One can easily see it from Avinashi road Fly over. Many moffusil route buses are now getting maintained in Pollachi and other depots. Dhandapani or Kumaran can tell us better.
Welcome for a Separate topic specially for Coimbatore.
Uppilipalayam depot of CBE region mainly maintains all CBE- Salem bound buses, CBE - Erode - 2 buses and some Sathy and Karur buses. It is the smallest depot compared to all other depots of this region.
Ooty, Kothagiri buses are maintained at Ukkadam depot.
Most of long distance buses are operated from MTP depot but starting point from CBE, such as Sivagangai, Tanjore, Thiruvannamalai,Rajapalyam etc., Almost all Tirupur buses via Avinashi are opearted by Head office branch.
Lattest bus from CBE region is TN-38-N-2543 - Cbe - Salem.
chidambaram_mech04 March 21st, 2011, 10:36 AM Thanks for that info Kumaran. I would add few more, bus no 5, 5C gets maintined in Head Office, 7, 7C in Sungam, 1C Maruthamalai and Ondipudur, 70 in Maruthamalai. 26, 26A,130 in Ukkadam.
karthikarthik March 21st, 2011, 03:14 PM Good thread to start.
Now its time to set up a separate sub forum like Western Tamilnadu where we can include threads of CBE, CBE hangout, CBE IT, CBE Transportation, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, CBE-Salem ind corridor and Hosur threads. In a similar fashion Southern Tamilnadu will be helpful for the Madurai region. This will make it easier to post and read.

One unique thing i have seen in this BS is, the roof top of this BS is used for parking. :) So they utilized the space well..

More facilities for passengers at Coimbatore railway junction
Coimbatore: Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, J.N. Jagannath, said that re-opening of the railway stations on the Coimbatore - Mettupalayam sector such as Thudiyalur, Urumandampalayam and Pudupalayam that are in deplorable condition would be considered.
Speaking to reporters after an inspection at the Coimbatore Railway Junction on Saturday, he said that passenger amenities' work such as setting up of electronic display, spot your train system, improvement in passenger circulating area, air-conditioned waiting halls and additional counters are being carried out the junction at a cost of Rs. 10 crore.
On 11 trains passing through Podanur Junction skipping the Coimbatore junction, he said that diversion of trains takes time, but was under the zonal-level consideration.
He also said that the junction has generated revenue of Rs. 67 crore last year.
He was accompanied by the Additional Railway Divisional Manager, P. Kalimuthu and other senior officials of the railway department.

Can you with Chidambaram / RAAC take steps to make the management close the doors for those buses while it's running? It would be a great small-step for safety (and also to keep the bus cleaner).

I was also thinking about this. Let us try to take some steps in closing doors. In most of the SLFs the doors were tied. :bash:

If, the doors are closed, the passenger capacity may decrease during the peak hours. Additional 5/6 persons can travel in the last step and in the footboards if the doors are not closed.
This may be the reason for not closing the doors.

if that is the case why they want to have those doors?? With SLFs they are charging twice the amount of normal fares(+Rs.1). So this will not be a big problem.
One more question.. If we remove all the seats it will get more passengers during peak hours right??
binaiks April 18th, 2011, 03:31 PM If, the doors are closed, the passenger capacity may decrease during the peak hours. Additional 5/6 persons can travel in the last step and in the footboards if the doors are not closed.
Safety should take first priority, not carrying capacity. For increasing carrying capacity they better rip off the seats, but not keep the doors open. They r not closing doors for the simple reason - laziness.
satishanu April 18th, 2011, 03:43 PM How are the doors closed in these buses? Is it just a push a button?

simple pnematic cylinders controlled from drivers dashboard. In first version of MTC, these cylinders were visible, in later version it is covered and placed in the top.

No offence to you but it only shows that our system even makes the educated folks compromise on safety to such a level that we think making money is more important than that.
More reason to educate the transport corporation on importance of closing the doors :)

Right. Even it is more safe than the older pneumatic doors. Older doors will close outwards. if driver close the door when passengers were standing in the footboard, in the old SLFs it will throw away the passengers outside. In the JNNURM versions it will close inwards so it will not throw away the passengers outside. This was copied from Prakash's Metro Line SLFs of MTC.

In CBE almost all SLFs(both marco and AL) have doors. I have seen only one AL SLF without a door in the front side alone. Worst doors are available in the marcopolos. Most of the marcopolos in Madurai and CBE started showing of their real colors. So much of vibrations, cant tolerate those vibrations when we sit in the front side.
In most of the SLFs they have tied the doors. This became common mainly in Marcopolos.

If the maintenance of Tata Marcopolos were costlier in TN, why come they opted for it under JnNURM? Instead they could have gone for AL itself..

In peak hours it is impossible for the drivers to close the doors of the buses, even if drivers think to close it. Such will be the crowd in Chennai.

I thank 'the hindu', CBE edition profusely for publishing my views again reg. the vexed problem of diverting of bye passing trains into CBE.
I have tried to give every possible aspect of this problem viewing in all possible angles. I am sure this is yet another knock at the doors of the officialdom of railways in Salem, MAS & New Delhi reg. this matter.

Shun partisan policy
Railway authorities continues their apathy towards Coimbatore by not diverting the Kerala-bound trains, presently operated via Irugur-Podanur single line (with or without halt at Podanur), through Coimbatore Junction even after the much-delayed Irugur-Coimbatore double line work is over.
There is no longer any constraint in the Irugur-Coimbatore north section because of the single line and still the Kerala-bound trains take the single line Irugur-Podanur bypass line route which makes the very purpose of doubling the Irugur-Coimbatore north line a mockery leading to underutilisation of assets created at a whopping cost of Rs. 60 crore and consuming nearly 20 years.
The statement that “trains to be introduced in future will be routed via Coimbatore” is nothing but a cruel joke by the railway authorities because it is well-known that introducing new trains is a herculean task and already Coimbatore has lost a good chunk of trains which were made to skip the city while the Irugur-Coimbatore north section was in single line.
The railway authorities should shed their partisan policy towards Coimbatore junction and make all Kerala-bound trains touch Coimbatore junction and make it on a par with Erode or Salem junctions.
Ravi S.,
Coimbatore
dr_thapalathy May 5th, 2011, 07:38 AM For this, i think the only way is to remove the track between Irugur and Podanur, which is a single line, so that, all the trains, must go via Coimbatore.
chidambaram_mech04 May 5th, 2011, 08:48 AM For this, i think the only way is to remove the track between Irugur and Podanur, which is a single line, so that, all the trains, must go via Coimbatore.
Yes correct. But there is good volume of goods trains use the by pass lines. So if they are allowed to enter into cbe it ll be congestion. That bye pass line should be changed as freight line.

This is wat we needed. It should be a dedicated frieght line. And all the passenger trains should come inside CBE city.
karthikarthik May 6th, 2011, 05:10 AM As a long term measure, instead of demanding diversion(I am not against diversion but Southern railway will continue diversion citing congestion) we should demand Podanur as second terminal. All North bound trains should start from Podanur and all south bound train should start from CBE junction. Already the fourth platform in Podanur was demolished in view of broad gauge conversion. There is enough room for creating more platforms. Space in front of the station is enough to handle car parking and to provide other amenities. Already Podanur has a building for computerized reservation.
Point to point bus services connecting Ukkadam, Coimbatore main junction, MTP bus stand, Singanallur and Gandhipuram would make transportation hassle free.
Route no: 4 connects ukkdam and MTP bus stands
Route no: 8 connects ukkdam and Singanallur
Route 55, 53, 55a, 55b, 4c, 51, 73b, 73 c connects Ukkadam, Rly station and Gandhipuram.

After doubling the % utilization is only 84% so its under utilized line. So diversion would not be a problem. Also as u said there are buses that connects major places, but important trains comes in odd timings between Midnight and 04.30 in the morning. That time bus connection is not available. Buses should be available to the timings of the Trains.
In MG there were 4 platforms, but in BG its going to be 3 platforms only. However trains like Erode passengers, Mettupalayam Passengers, Nagercoil Passengers can be extended to Podanur. Similarly Trains like Palghat Passengers, Shoranur Passenger, Trichur Passenger, Cannanore Passenger, Mangalore Passenger can be extended to Coimbatore North.
Mono Rails is also a good option.
Arul Murugan May 6th, 2011, 06:31 AM ^^
Chidambaram instead of diversion, please voice for stopping all trains at Podanur and making into a terminal with pit line facility.
Coimbatore is becoming like a mini-metro, having one terminal or diverting all trains via CBE will only make trouble for CBE because of some useless Kerala trains entering midnight at CBE.

In midnight Platform Availablity is not a problem at CBE. I see some trains like Puducherry-Mangalore, Mumbai-Trivandram, Yeshwanthpur-Kannur, Hubli-Kochuveli, Ernakulam-Bangalore, Trichy-Mangalore are Potential Candidates for entering CBE.
Regarding Pitline, Mettupalyam, Coimbatore North and Podanur can have Pitlines. So that we can accomodate new Trains in Future.

Agreed. But my point was on Trivandrum mail, Mangalore mail type trains....

News from Hindu
Coimbatore: The city has one more player in the call taxi sector. Anand Palanisamy Group launched on Thursday ‘Taxi Taxi' with a fleet of 50 luxury cars.
Mr. Palanisamy told The Hindu that in Coimbatore the present call taxi operators were not able to serve all the customers in need of a call taxi. Only to 30 or 40 out of 100 call taxi requests were being serviced by the operators owing to growing demand and lack of adequate number of vehicles.
In addition, Taxi Taxi will redefine the call taxi system by introducing a fleet of 50 Ford Fiesta luxury cars at the same tariff of Rs. 30 for first two km and Rs. 15 per every additional km. He added that in another 10 days, another 50 cars will be added to the fleet. Over the remaining nine months, he plans to add another 300 cars.
The existing call taxi operators offer only Omni and Indica cars from their fleet, whereas Taxi Taxi will have air-conditioned Ford Fiesta.
Taxi Taxi has a separate control room with GPS tracking facility for each vehicle, giving a safe and secured travel with time to time information on the vehicle location. Drivers are trained in martial arts and yoga to provide a courteous service to the customers and ensure their safety.
“There is enough market prospects at present and is steadily growing with the opening of new star hotels and an upcoming international airport,” he added.
Taxi Taxi will be a 24-hour taxi service. It also offers the facility of swiping credit and debit cards enabling the travellers to pay their bills with ease.
The firm also offers car pooling service to reduce emission and to keep the earth green. Taxi Taxi services can be availed by dialling 40506070.

From Railway station to Bharthi Park road Autowala asked 100 rs.(its nearly 5 KM) If it is Taxi Taxi it would have cost only 75. Finally my friend paid 80 Rs in auto.
In CBE many of auto's are old. They don't cross 20 KMPH. Even few Auto's use Kerosene!!!

That is also a good option. But are there rooms for upgradation of Podanur station?
kongutamizhan May 6th, 2011, 06:06 PM That is also a good option. But are there rooms for upgradation of Podanur station?

Wow, really a good info. It really has the capacity to decongest Coimbatore City Junction. This can be developed in the lines of Mangalore Junction. Hope there is a project for expansion and upgradation of Podanur station.
kongutamizhan May 7th, 2011, 07:16 PM ^^ Haven't been to Mangalore. But yes Podanur does have scope for it.
IMO without even knowing that they are favouring CBE, railways did us a favour in this case :) It's up to us to utilize it by asking for the right thing instead of asking for diversion.
Arul Murugan May 7th, 2011, 08:17 PM Voicing for Podanur junction terminal is more feasible and futuristic requirement than running behind the old panchagam of diverting all trains via Coimbatore Jn which railways will never bend;
Long distance, Weekly trains should pass for Coimbatore Jn.
In the past there was spur i.e bye-pass line from Irugur to Coimbatore side via Nanjundapuram i.e before Coimbatore North-Peelamedu-Irugur was line constructed. This Nanjundapuram line should be restored and it may be useful during emergency perion of Peelamedu line also for suburban train operation.
chidambaram_mech04 May 9th, 2011, 11:13 AM Podanur has Spsce to Grow. But no works are carried out. The Pit Line in Podanur was closed few years back.

COIMBATORE: Karadimadai residents are a happy lot. Their long-pending demand for a bus service to Chennanoor to help the children go to school has been fulfilled, courtesy Minister for Special Programme Implementation S.P. Velumani.
During his Sunday visit to Thondamuthur, his constituency, villagers met him and said that there was no bus service between Karadimadai and Chennanoor and among those who suffered the most were students.
Upon hearing their grievance, the Minister consulted State Transport Corporation Managing Director Palraj and thereafter announced that the bus service would be introduced Monday onwards, said a release from the district administration.
The release said the Minister had directed officials concerned to act on petitions regarding ration card, free title deed (patta), drinking water connection, old age pension, power connection, etc.
He visited Thondamuthur, Madhampatty, Karadimadai, Chennanur, Thaneerpandhal, Mathipalayam, Kalampalayam, Theethipalayam, Pooluvapatti, Vadivelampalayam, Semmedu and neighbouring places.

Why i was asking this is, Initially we had only 37. So i think 37 will have most of the route details operated by private operators in CBE.
Also i have seen many private city buses getting registered under TN66 now.

Slew of traffic reforms on the cards on city roads
V.S. Palaniappan
Flow of traffic from Ukkadam signal to Aatuppalam ensured
The timing of green signal for vehicles coming from Aatuppalam increased by 20 seconds
COIMBATORE: Among the slew of reforms planned to streamline the traffic on city roads, the city police are focusing on decongesting the identified stretches, installation of new signals, networking of the police database with that of the Transport Department for suspending or cancelling the driving licence of frequent or habitual violators.
City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari has already set an agenda for the traffic police to implement a number of things to streamline traffic flow on city roads. In the first phase, flow of traffic from Ukkadam signal to Aatuppalam has been ensured, said S. Nizamuddin, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic).
The timing of green signal for vehicles coming from Aatuppalam has been increased by 20 more seconds taking it to 80 seconds. Now, a signal is being installed at the exit gate of the Ukkadam bus stand to regulate the exit of buses and to ensure uninterrupted flow of vehicles from the signal heading towards Valankulam Road over Bridge on the bypass road, Mr.Nizamuddin added.
The stretch was getting increasingly congested because of the closure of Nanjundapuram Road for the construction of a flyover across the railway line.
The police are now focusing on the North Coimbatore signal near Chinthamani where flow of vehicles need to be disciplined especially those coming from new flyover side towards flower market and then again at two junctions on Mettupalayam Road near NSR Road Junction and then near the road branching off towards Sivananda Colony.
A free left has been re-introduced near Surya Hospital for vehicles from Saravanampatti on Sathyamangalam Road proceeding towards Ganapathy.
Efforts are on to re-design the flow of vehicles at GRG School signal on Avanashi Road near Masakkalipalayam Road junction. To bring in discipline on Arts College Road that accommodates the District Sessions Court, interceptor two-wheeler with a recovery vehicle is being positioned on this road as well as on Railway Station Road for removing vehicles that are parked beyond the designated parking lot.
In addition to synchronise the signals and ensure uninterrupted flow, the police are planning to bring in suggested speed on signals on Avanashi Road, Tiruchi Road in the first phase and then on Mettupalayam Road after the road works are completed.
The signals in addition to the timers would have a display board indicating the suggested speed to guide the motorists on crossing all the signals without being stopped at the subsequent signals.
Steps are on to re-active the centralised public address system to enable the control to warn the violating motorists at traffic signals and also to bring in a feature for generating three copies of e-challans in the handheld machines so as to dispense with the manual challan system once for all.
Efforts are on to synchronise the vehicular database of the Transport Department with that of the database at the police control room so that steps could be taken to suspend or cancel the driving licence of habitual and repeat offenders/violators.
Coimbatore City Police has Road Safety Patrols (RSP) in 59 schools and 19 colleges with student strength of 2,520 students and 675 students respectively.
Mr.Nizamuddin said that Commissioner Amaresh Pujari has asked for providing another round of training to these students so that these RSP volunteers could regulate traffic and help their fellow students cross the road with ease during the school hours.
In future, RSP will be extended to all schools and colleges in the city. DCP also pointed out that the next step would be to fill up the vacancies in the Traffic Wardens Organisation. As against the 200 sanctioned strength, there were only 57 available now.
In the first phase, the strength would be increased to 100 and then to the maximum 200, so that traffic wardens could be available for traffic regulation on all days.

People face difficulty as there is no direct Train between Coimbatore and Delata Districts. The train Coming from Kerala is passing Coimbatore in mid night, so its not helpful to passengers. People Travelling to Thanjavur, Nagapatnam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Tirukadaiur, Tirunallar, Velankanni, Pondycherry find it difficult in travelling.
On festival days and School Holidays Omni Buses charge double the anount. Even though there are buses operated by SETC, those buses are poorly operated.

COIMBATORE: The police are planning to start a corridor of green signals on Avinashi Road in the city within a week. Once the signal timings are reset, motorists can drive through Avinashi Road, from the rail overbridge to Sitra bus stop, without having to stop at any point.
In a move to modernise signal patterns and regularise traffic flow in the city, the police is resetting signal timers on Avinashi Road and Tiruchi Road. The earlier signal pattern will be discarded.
"Vehicle movement is very high on the two arterial roads. So, we have planned to reset the timer in traffic signals on the two main roads. Within a week, the green corridor project' will be introduced on the two roads. Thereafter, riders can cross the Avinashi Road stretch from Avinashi Road rail overbridge to Citra without stopping anywhere. But the rider must follow the speed limit of 40 km/hour," said city police commissioner Amaresh Pujari.

chidambaram_mech04 July 12th, 2011, 08:26 AM ^^As a rare occurence, the hon'ble member of Parliament, from Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency, participated in the discussions to counter the apathetic attitude shown by railways towards Coimbatore, organized by Indian Chamber of Commerce, CBE and shared his views.
He expressed full support in the issue of fighting the reluctance shown by railways for not rerouting Kerala bound trains presently skipping CBE, via the CBE jn, even after Irugur doubling has been completed. He says he has received many replies from railway administration reg. this matter. He even supports that demonstrations, agitations for various needs of CBE reg. railways. But, he has refuted the allegations that he has not spoken in Parliament (LS) over the railway issue of CBE. While stating that opportunity to talk in LS, for members is given only by draw of lots, he has utilized whatever opportunity has has got to speak in LS.
Also, reg. provision of garbage bins etc, in CBE jn, he says, one should not expect Railway administration to provide such small amenities and can be taken up by local organizations. But, reg. construction of ramp etc for movement of wheel chairs etc for invalids, only the railway administration has to make them, he added.
He said he welcomed all comments ( positive as well as negative) directed towards him in this matter and ready to give due weightage.

chidambaram_mech04 July 12th, 2011, 04:01 PM Voluntary organisations and non-Governmental organisations here have sought immediate efforts to clean Valankulam, improve infrastructure at the Coimbatore Railway Station and increase train connectivity to Coimbatore.
Over 100 participants attended a meeting organised by “NGO Connect – The Power of One” at the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Saturday.
Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan, Coimbatore South MLA, R. Doraiswamy, Coimbatore North MLA T. Malaravan, and Koundampalayam MLA V.C. Arukutti also participated in the interactive session.
Convener of NGO Connect Vanitha Mohan said the tank bed area of Vallankulam had shrunk to 96 acres from originally 160 acres.
The total catchment area of the tank was 4.8 sq.km. Siruthuli had constructed a culvert from Big Tank at Ukkadam to Valankulam to facilitate draining of excess water to Valankulam.
Valankulam
Valankulam also had provisions for excess water from it to drain into the Noyyal. However, several sewage inlets into the tank had deteriorated its condition. It was filled with water hyacinths now.
Construction debris were dumped into it and the water quality was poor. “We are literally sitting on a time bomb. We do not know when there will be an epidemic,” she said.
Ms. Mohan said sewage water should go to the sewage treatment plants and should not be let into the Valankulam. The encroachments should be removed, dumping of debris should be stopped, water hyacinths should be cleared and a walkway should be constructed around the tank.
R. Raveendran, secretary of Residents' Awareness Association of Coimbatore, said over 10,000 passengers moved in and out of Coimbatore Railway junction every day.
Main trains
At least five main trains that passed via Podanur should be diverted to Coimbatore. Basic amenities such as ramps, dustbins, drinking water provisions and electronic guidance system for coach positions should be provided at the station. A model railway station should be developed at North Coimbatore.
Participants suggested larger campaigns, organising protests, sending post cards to the Union Government, joint representation by all the Members of Parliament from Tamil Nadu to highlight the railway needs of Coimbatore.
Plea to CM
Mr. Arukutty said that the issues should be represented jointly to the Chief Minister. Mr. Natarajan said some new trains had been announced for Coimbatore during the last two years. Issues related to the Railways were taken up with the officials at the Centre too.

Honour them ? What for ?
After all these irresponsible and idiotic fellows have been 'HONOURED' by ppl of Cbe by electing them to TNLA.
And they have even stalled already sanctioned projects.
Ok, we'll honor them -
Do these guys have the guts 2 force their Amma to immediately clear all hurdles and get going G'puram flyover, Western bypass and -------- Poonga.
Bring them and then the ppl will surely honor these -----.

kannan infratech July 14th, 2011, 12:35 PM Tuglak editor CHO had written a nice article on - How he tried to ask a question in Rajya Sabha and what all he went through. Very hilarious.
Even in Lok Sabha, it is a big procedure to ask a question and many TN MPs do not have the confidence to converse with the Speaker / Chairman to get their questions listed. They go behind the Parliamentary Leader of their party as a herd.
They do not even attend all the sessions of Parliament and some have been reprimanded by the Speaker for not being present in Parliament when their question came up for discussion.
Most of them do only lobbying with the Union Ministers & MOS from TN for issues, where they get a fat commission.
The Dravida Kalacharam is MLAS & MPS are more than Gods. Salvais & Malais are more imporatnt than People.
GOSH!!!!!!

COIMBATORE: Though the much-awaited link express to Tuticorin began service more than a fortnight ago, it seems there is no respite for commuters from Coimbatore bound for southern cities like Madurai, Tuticorin, Thirunelveli and Nagercoil.
All the ten coaches of Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express, which also carry six coaches of the Tuticorin link express till Vanchi Maniyachi Junction, are getting fully occupied by south-bound passengers everyday. Apart from a passenger train that starts at 7.15am, the Nagercoil Express and the six coaches of the link express are the only train services that link the southern districts with Coimbatore. All tickets for the reservation compartments get booked at least 15 days in advance while the unreserved compartments get jam-packed with those who plan their trips all of a sudden.
All the 50 government buses and 20 omni buses to the southern cities are also running beyond their capacity. "There is no lean day in the case of southern routes. We are not able to issue tickets to all those who approach us on all the days of the week. The sector needs more buses and trains," opines R Bhaskaran, Coimbatore unit secretary of Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Operators Association.
As thousands of people from southern Tamil Nadu are working in textile and other industrial segments of Coimbatore, the city is badly in need of more trains and buses to Madurai, Nagercoil and other southern cities.
"When the Coimbatore-Dindigul meter gauge line was active, there was an express train that went up to Rameswaram. This line was used not only by pilgrims but also commuters from Madurai. Due to gauge conversion in Dindigul-Coimbatore region, this service was stopped. We have been demanding its rerouting via Erode and Karur till completion of the gauge conversion," says M Krishnan, president of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore. Besides the Rameswaram Express, there were three passenger trains that operated between Madurai and Coimbatore through the Dindigul-Pollachi stretch. But the railways opted to cancel them instead of rerouting them via Erode-Karur stretch.

chidambaram_mech04 July 25th, 2011, 04:27 PM Re-routing of trains not feasible, says S.Rly
V.S. Palaniappan Share · print · T+
‘Only the Railway Board has to take a decision'
The issue of re-routing of trains skipping Coimbatore Junction has once again suffered a set back. The Southern Railway in response to a grievance petition has said that it was not feasible to re-route trains and it was under the purview of the Railway Board.
The Southern Railway's explanation was in reply to a grievance raised by S. Ravi, an activist for rail users, on February 17, 2011.
Interestingly, the grievance raised with the Railway Board was referred to Southern Railway.
For the last five months after looking into the grievance, the authorities have responded only to say that re-routing was under the purview of the Railway Board.
Mr. Ravi wanted to know why the petition submitted with the Railway Board was referred to the Southern Railway when such issues were not in its purview.
Coimbatore, a highest revenue earner in Southern Railway next only to Chennai, was without proper rail connectivity even as 13 pairs of trains (specials, daily, tri-weekly, bi-weekly and weekly) were skipping Coimbatore Junction and were being run via Podanur – Irugur – Podanur sections, pointed out Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon.
The city first waited for the completion of the Coimbatore – Coimbatore North – Irugur railway line doubling, which took nearly two decades. After commencing the works, the implementation of the project took several years owing to land acquisition problem.
After the second line was thrown open, Coimbatore waited for nearly one-and-a-half years for the railway to re-route the trains via Coimbatore, Mr. Kathirmathiyon said.
Then, the Southern Railway sources said it would be announced in the new railway time table, but nothing was mentioned when the time-table was released.
The grievance raised in February was now declared as closed, with a reply stating that re-routing of trains was not under the purview of Southern Railway as it rests with the Railway Board.
Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan was trying to get the Bangalore-bound train from Ernakulam and the Puducherry – Mangalore train on either direction via Coimbatore with a stoppage. Mr. Natarajan told The Hindu over phone that General Manager of Southern Railway had already given a reply stating that a recommendation in this connection was sent to the Railway Board.
The reply also contained another line stating that operating new trains via Coimbatore could be examined. Mr. Kathirmathiyon and Mr. Ravi contended that Southern Railway was keen to hand out a “step motherly” treatment to Coimbatore despite its potential and the revenue earned from this region.
They also pointed out the failure of Railway Ministry and Railway Board in extending the Jodhpur–Bangalore Express up to Coimbatore despite having announced it twice in the railway budget. In the absence of rail connectivity and refusal to re-route the trains via Coimbatore, the region continues to wait for train services or adequate accommodation in the trains to Thiruvananthapuram, Mangalore, Chennai and Bangalore.
Meanwhile, Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore and Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam are moving the court seeking directions to Southern Railway to re-route the trains via Coimbatore.

Special weekly train to Rameshwaram from Aug. 8
Special Correspondent
The much-awaited service will be till October
Rail connectivity between Coimbatore and Rameshwaram has been renewed with the introduction of a weekly special service, to run from August 8 till October.
Coimbatore has been demanding such a service to Rameshwaram via Erode-Karur-Tiruchirapalli, as the gauge-conversion works in the Dindigul-Palani- Udumalpet- Pollachi-Coimbatore line is awaiting completion.
The metre gauge line was laid in the early 1920s. During those days, Coimbatore–Madurai–Rameswaram Express was a very population overnight train, departing from Coimbatore late in the night and reaching Madurai in the early hours of the morning. It was then operated as a Madurai–Rameshwaram Passenger Train.
Service curtailed
When the Madurai–Dindigul gauge conversion was taken up, the service was curtailed between Coimbatore and Dindigul. Then, Tamil Nadu had only two island metre gauge lines i.e., Coimbatore–Madurai (then curtailed up to Dindigul) and Madurai–Theni.
Only recently, the Madurai–Theni metre gauge section was wound up for gauge conversion.
The Coimbatore–Dindigul MG services were curtailed at Podanur when the Coimbatore–Podanur section was taken up for gauge conversion. The last run of that MG service was on May 26, 2009.
Snail-paced work
The works that commenced then are still on. Bridge works are yet to be completed, after which laying of track would begin, and only after a Commissioner Rail Safety inspection, would the line be opened up.
Sources in the construction wing said the works were expected to be completed by mid 2012.
It was one of the non-capital trains (i.e., an express train between two non-State capital destinations), said S. Ravi, an activist. But for now, the special weekly service brings in some breather, reviving the connectivity with Rameshwaram after a gap of nearly eight years.
The much-awaited train would connect Coimbatore with seven district headquarters i.e., Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Pudukottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram, where it would stop besides halts at Chettinad, Karaikudi, Devakottai Road, Kallal, Manamadurai and Paramakudi, said M. Krishnan, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Migrant workforce
The train would serve the travel needs of pilgrims visiting the shrines at Rameshwaram and Thirupullani besides serving the requirements of migrant workforce in this part of the State, he added.
Passengers to these destinations, who were so far dependent on road transport, would henceforth get a convenient, comfortable and economical mode of travel.
Mr. Krishnan urged for introducing a day-time train on this route for connecting seven districts, and also for increasing the frequency of this train at least gradually to make it a daily and a permanent train service.
Plea to patronise
The Chamber has also appealed to the people to patronise the train fully so that the Railways would consider turning the service into a permanent and daily one.
Similarly, at present Coimbatore has a direct day-time train to Tirupati i.e., a tri-weekly intercity express on Monday, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The newly announced special train on the Coimbatore– Tirupati route on Thursdays increases the frequency of connectivity between the two places by one more day.
Authorities should consider making this too a permanent and daily service by running the train even on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays.

CBE-SINGAKUTTY August 1st, 2011, 01:23 PM More coaches for two trains from Coimbatore^^^^
Two more coaches have been added to Coimbatore – Mayiladuthurai Jan Shatabdi Express (12083/84) and Coimbatore – Tirupati Intercity Express (12758/12757) with effect from August 3. Rail travel to the delta region (Tiruchy and beyond) has increased after the setting up of the Central University at Tiruvarur and opening up of more colleges and higher educational institution in the region.
This is a most sought after train as there are no overnight trains available from Coimbatore to Thanjavur region.
Similarly, the recently introduced Coimbatore – Tirupati Intercity Express has been a hit with Coimbatore passengers as it was difficult to get a confirmed accommodation in the two trains from Kerala that go via Tirupati.
Southern Railway has decided to increase the number of coaches in these two trains with two ordinary sitting class accommodation each.
On July 15, Southern Railway had increased two coaches on the Coimbatore – Mayiladuthurai Jan Shatabdi Express.
The Southern Railway also had added one ordinary sleeper coach each in Chennai Central – Mangalore – Chennai Central train that runs via Podanur and in the Chennai Central – Mangalore – Chennai Central West Coast Express. The authorities also increased two coaches on the Bangalore – Kochuveli – Bangalore Tri-weekly express with two sleeper class coaches.
R. Raveendran of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, welcoming the latest Railway move, pointed out that at least on a piecemeal basis, the authorities were catering to the requirements of Coimbatore region.
However, S. Vaidynathakrishnan of Coimbatore Railway Passengers Association said there was a need to increase the number of coaches in Chennai-bound trains as there was an endless wait list almost everyday.
More coaches were also need in trains bound for Nagercoil, Tuticorin and at least in overnight trains to Thiruvananthapuram. He also reiterated the need for direct overnight trains from Coimbatore to Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Mangalore, Rameswaram via Erode – Karur till the Coimbatore – Pollachi – Udumalpet – Palani – Dindigul gauge conversion was completed and an additional overnight train to Chennai.

You can read the MoSR statement at Thanjavur 2 days before. It is likely that they planned to upgrade the existing tracks!
Also 10days before there was a news about Mumbai-Delhi mainline is considered for upgradation to 160KMPH and conventional engine operated trains will not be used for running the train at average speed of 150KMPH. This is planned to be done at the cost of 5000crores compared to building new alignment which may cost 1,35,00crores!
With 150KMPH, the travel time between two biggest cities in India will come down by 7hrs from existing 16hrs.
No sarathy, Arul was mocking that even if IR achieve 150kmph it would be great. As per plan it is 350kmph, lets see how it turns out to be in due course ( 15-20 yrs)
No BC, I am not mocking.... 350KMPH bullet train is nothing but scam. Do you think Indian railways or central gvt have potential in invest 70,000 crores for Chennai-Bengaluru-Coimbatore-Ernakulam route? It is impossible even for 15-20yrs.
I am sure the project will get shrinked to speed increase on existing tracks. Even 150KMPH average speed is very great and this will cost 3100crores compared to 70,000crores 350KMPH (even China does not operate 350 as average speed)
And under this congress gvt we cannot even expect this 150KMPH project! If BJP has not ruled the country in 1999-2004, even now we might be riding in same old 2 lane NH. We need some visionary leaders to implement even this 150KMPH upgradation project... (may be Delhi Metro, Sreedharan!!).. 60yrs seyathava congress ippo senchidum?
MA Eswaran August 2nd, 2011, 06:41 AM Dear members,
Today's 'The Hindu', CBE edition, gives a news item on much awaited restoration of train connectivity between CBE and Rameshwaram. Though this special train is operated in a slightly different path from the erstwhile, very popular 6715/16 CBE - RMM express / passenger, it has given new connectivity from CBE to places like Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Chettinad, karaikkudi etc.
Also, in total 8 district Headquarters are linked by this special train.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•The weekly service revives the city's rail link with Rameshwaram after 8 years
•Seven district headquarters will be covered by the special train
I am sure this train ( new connectivity) will be patronised well.
Even after opening of converted BG line ( CBE-Pollachi-palani-Dindigul) after a couple of years, this train via Tirupur,Erode would still be popular and ultimately there would be trains in both the routes

Bullet trains like TGV's are more expensive than flights , all these bullet trains are rhetorics to catch imagination. If at all introduced in India , it will be somewhere in north India , in that too people will travel in 'without'.
Best option is to modernize the system for eg. ensuring automatic signalling
and increase the number and speed of trains

CBE-SINGAKUTTY August 10th, 2011, 04:02 PM More trains to reduce burden on chord line
With the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) according his clearance for the operation of passenger train services in the newly laid broad gauge track from Nidamangalam to Mannargudi, people of delta districts are expected to get a few new trains, including a overnight express train to Chennai and passenger trains to Tiruchi.
The construction work of the new railway station in Mannargudi has already been completed and the Tiruchi Railway division has also set up a satellite passenger reservation centre in Mannargudi town.
Though the BG conversion work on the Tiruvarur – Mayiladuthurai section is in progress, the Railways is likely to introduce a direct train service to Chennai from Mannargudi via Thanjavur on the main line initially.
At present, the Tiruchi – Chennai day express, Kumbakonam – Chennai Rockfort express, Rameswaram – Chennai express; Nagore – Chennai express (all daily trains); Madurai – Chennai express (weekly twice), Tiruchendur – Chennai weekly express are the trains connecting the delta districts with the state capital.
Southern Railway is said to have sent a proposal to the Railway Board for introducing a new overnight train from Mannargudi to Chennai via Thanjavur. The recent visit of A..P.Mishra, member (engineering), Railway Board, to Mannargudi to inspect the new infrastructure facilities at the station, apart from the track, has raised the hopes of all the three districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, of getting an additional train. A cross section of the travelling public of Tiruchi district feel that the introduction of an additional overnight train on the main line will immensely reduce the burden on the trains passing via Tiruchi on the chord line, in particular on the rockfort express, which is at present originating from Kumbakonam.
T.R.B.Rajaa, Mannargudi MLA, submitted a memorandum to Mr.Mishra in this connection. Besides, he also demanded introduction of an overnight express train from Mannargudi to Coimbatore. At present Janshatabdi express and the Nagore – Ernakulam overnight express are the only trains connecting delta districts with Coimbatore, apart from a few passenger trains. The overnight express train will be of great help to the people of Tiruchi district, says Esthar, a housewife.

CBE-SINGAKUTTY August 12th, 2011, 08:29 AM New train via Erode a big hit
Tuticorin –Coimbatore Express train (16611), which has been introduced recently, has evoked a good response from passengers.
Since the train passes through Erode, passengers can head for various destinations from there like Tirupati, Thiruthani, Katpadi, Mumbai and also to Bangalore.
The train is catering to the needs of travellers by and large, according to M. Piramanayagam, Tuticorin District Passengers' Welfare Association.
Devotees, who arrive in Tiruchendur to offer prayers at Subramaniya Swamy Temple, the second abode of Lord Murugan, could well utilize the Tuticorin– Coimbatore express train to travel across to Tirupati.
“The Coimbatore bound train (16611) from Tuticorin halts at Erode at 5.05 a.m. everyday. The Tirupati-bound express train from Coimbatore arrives at 7.25 a.m. in Erode. The Coimbatore–Tirupati Express (12758) is being made operational thrice a week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
The return express train from Tirupati to Coimbatore (12757) is being made operational on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrives in Erode at 8.35 p.m.,” he said.
As for Mumbai-goers, the daily Lokmanya Tilak Express train (11014) from Coimbatore would touch Erode at 9.30 a.m. through Bangalore, Pune and Kalyan. Since many patients seek health expertise at the multi specialty hospital in Vellore, possibilities were also open to board the Katpadi-bound express train which leaves Coimbatore and arrives at Chennai via Erode at 7.40 a.m..

kongutamizhan August 15th, 2011, 05:31 AM Circular rail link suggested to de-congest roads in Coimbatore.

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00754/circular_railway_ep_754198f.jpg
Coimbatore Railway Passengers Association says it's viable
Nine arterial roads reach out to different areas in this thickly populated and growing city. But, these stretches remain congested because of inadequate link roads. Even as the demand for link roads is being made consistently, the other option is to have a rail network that can reduce the burden on city roads.
A circular rail network and shuttle train services are being suggested whenever the city's chaotic roads come up for discussion. The Coimbatore Railway Passengers Association has come up with a suggestion for reviving a small stretch of railway line that could make the much awaited circular rail a reality.
N.V. Nagasubramanian, President, and S. Vaidyanathakrishnan, Secretary of the Association suggest that the Vellalore link – between the old Singanallur station and Coimbatore Junction – can be revived. It had existed up to 1952, till the laying of single line between Coimbatore and Irugur. The first unopposed MP of Coimbatore in the first Parliament T.A. Ramalingam Chettiar was instrumental in getting the first single line laid between Coimbatore and Irugur and after which the Vellalore link was unused and later removed.
Relaying the Vellalore line between Singanallur and Coimbatore Junction will not involve a huge financial burden, the association claims. As the land on which the railway line was then laid still remain unused, there will be no expense on land acquisition. They also say the people of Coimbatore should oppose the move of the Railways to lay a second line between Podanur and Irugur as this may lead to more trains skipping Coimbatore Junction.
The encroached railway lands on either side of the erstwhile track i.e., the Vellalore line, can be retrieved and a new railway terminal can be constructed closer to the city. Links from here can be established with both Coimbatore and Podanur stations.
The circular railway line will help run through Coimbatore Junction, Podanur, Vellalore, Irugur, Singanallur, Peelamedu and Coimbatore North (see map). This will certainly help decongest the city roads, Mohammed Jameel of the association points out. A senior official with the Salem division says if the revival of an old line can bring about so many benefits, it can be considered.

Various associations of Mannargudi presented petitions seeking direct train to Chennai to him.
T.R.B.Rajaa, Mannargudi MLA, submitted a memorandum to Mr.Mishra in this connection. Besides pleading for Mannai-Chennai express, he also demanded introduction of an overnight express train from Mannargudi to Coimbatore. Coimbatore, being the industrial capital of our state, has heavy influx of workers from all over the State, particularly from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. Hence there is a need for introducing a night express train from Mannargudi to Coimbatore, Mr.Rajaa said.
He also demanded introduction of passenger train in the Mannargudi-Tiruchi section. Tiruchi, being the major connecting point in the central region and a hub for industries, lot of people travel from composite Thanjavur district to Tiruchi every day. Introduction of a train will help them. He suggested that the train can start at 6.30 a.m. at Mannargudi reach Thanjavur at 7.30 a.m. and reach Tiruchi at 8.30 a.m. In the return direction, it can start at Tiruchi at 5 p.m. come to Thanjavur at 6 p.m. and reach Mannargudi at 7 p.m.

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Council has submitted a memorandum to the Southern Railway seeking a direct train to Coimbatore from Nagore.
In a petition requisitioned on behalf of the people of the Eastern delta, the council has pointed out to the conspicuous absence of a direct train to Coimbatore and its neighbouring districts. Despite the fact that there has been heavy migration to the textile centres of Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore from here in the recent years, there has never been rail connectivity. The Nagore-Ernakulam Express that passes via Coimbatore is by far dysfunctional especially due to the odd-hours at which it arrives at and departs from Coimbatore. According to R.Kaladharan, president, Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Council, the timings of the Nagore-Ernakulam Express ought to be rescheduled to suit the convenience of Coimbatore-bound passengers.
Further, there is no train service from Thanjavur to Nagore between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The consumer council has sought ad hoc intervention to provide for a service between Nagore and Thanjavur, with the bogies of the Kamban Express. The Kamban Express that arrives in the morning stands idle till its departure. Hindu's map representation looks little bit confusing because it is shown both Palghat and Tiruppur in same direction!
Hope this makes clear...
It is very easy to restore the loop line which was there via Nanjundapuram. Instead of new line from Irugur, if Nanjundapuram line was restored it will help for the purpose.
But Coimbatore needs suburban service to Mettupalayam, Tiruppur, Palghat, Podanur rather than circular railway line. I don't think circular railway line can help in great way for CBE traffic. Monorail can only answer the city traffic congestion. But sadly as usual it has turned into lip service!
http://i53.************/35a3ghe.jpg
kongutamizhan August 15th, 2011, 03:10 PM ^^ +1
Proposed system in Hindu won't help much. We need a proper suburban transit system with 2 Metra (or suburban) lines one each towards MTP and Tiruppur and Mono's covering the rest
ecotourindia August 15th, 2011, 07:59 PM ^^
One suggestion,
The existing BG main railway line is congested and with more passenger / goods trains it will create more pressure if we run suburban trains, plus we have to double Irugur - Podanur line too.
Time being some suburban trains can be run.
There is little scope for further expansion with additional lines for suburban / circular service only.
Hence why can't we have Monorail, that is elevated and takes less space parallel to the rail track on this alignment, where ever possible and then radiating as loops or further connections.
karthikarthik August 16th, 2011, 05:02 AM Still we are voicing only for CBE JN. What we need is the second terminal.
Irugur or Podanur(2nd terminal+suburban terminal)+Good Bus connectivity(24 hrs) to this terminal will be beneficial in short term. Monorail/metro(badly required now) is a long term wish and I feel ADMK or DMK is giving least importance to it.

Arul,
It was extended to Coimbatore, madurai and the other cities in 2008. But you can get the daily passes only at Bus stations. Thats why it is not so popular. Now the facility is extended in Coimbatore and Madurai by selling it through conductors. I dont think it is much useful in Trichy and salem because they have more normal buses.

CBE-SINGAKUTTY August 19th, 2011, 09:13 AM Police prepare list of bus stops to be relocated
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00757/CB18BUSPARK_757789f.jpg
Location of bus stops that cause traffic snarls have been a major contention when it comes to streamlining traffic and the issue is in focus once again, as the City Police have prepared a list of bus stops that needs to be relocated.
The issue of wrong location of bus stops i.e., near road junctions and traffic signals was discussed several times at the Road Safety cum Traffic Advisory Committee (RSTAC) meetings earlier, but resolving the same remained elusive all along. This required co-ordination with many departments.
Coimbatore Corporation, District Administration, Police, Highways, Transport Department, private bus operators and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) need to come together. In the absence of co-ordination, the problem continues.
City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari said that police have already raised this issue and would certainly take it up with the authorities concerned for shifting the bus stops a little away from road turnings and traffic signals.
Location of bus stops especially close to road junctions and traffic signals creates traffic snarls.
In addition, the bus crew while approaching the bus stop tend to speed away without stopping at the bus stop, if there was a green signal, thus leaving the passengers stranded at bus stops.
The bus stops on city roads do not have bus bays for the parking of buses and they occupy a substantial portion of the motorable space thus blocking the vehicles behind.
Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon who is also a member of RSTAC pointed out that bus stops have been put up on city roads not on the basis of the needs of the passengers but more on the basis of advertisers' interests.
The shelters for passengers – with advertisements – are indiscriminately erected by advertisers.
In fact the location for shelters for passengers should be decided by the Corporation/ Highways, Police and Transport Department and then they should ask the agencies to erect the shelters for passengers.
Shifted
Earlier, a few such bus stops were shifted to a nearby location. But passengers continue to stop at the old place and bus crew also stop at the same place unmindful of the spot being declared as unauthorised stop.
While the passengers blame the bus crew stating they stopped the buses only at the old place, the crew blame the passengers of standing only at the old place.
In certain cases, competition between TNSTC and private buses defeated the objective of shifting bus stops, Mr.Kathirmathiyon further added.
Bus stop near GP Theatre signal, Women's Polytechnic, Lakshmi Mill Junction, Raja Street – Oppanakkara Street Junction Nava India Junction, Ramanathapuram Junction, Singnallur signal, Sungam junction are just a few examples.
Bus stops should be located a little away from a road junction or a traffic signal.
Otherwise, the buses parked at bus stops will hold up traffic, he added.
There is a need for a comprehensive study on the location of bus stops which should be done by the police, corporation/ highways, Transport Department, before the relocation happens.
After relocation of the bus stops, the relocation of passengers' shelters should be done.
TNSTC and Transport Department should deploy people to ensure that the buses do not stop at the old place.
When contacted, District Collector M. Karunakaran said that agencies concerned will be asked to take up a detailed study based on which steps would be initiated to remove bus stops that are at wrong locations.

Haven’t they heard of bus bays?
Building bus bays can reduce traffic congestion on many Indian city roads to a great extant. Bus bays along with other things like encroachment removal, redesigning the geometry of intersections and proper paving of the road margins can be lot simpler and a lot less expensive solution to traffic congestion than road widening in many instances. File this one under Govt. incompetence.

COIMBATORE: With another festival season round the corner, advance ticket reservation centres of Southern Railway in the city have started seeing a mad rush for booking in long distance trains. But to the utter dismay of those who prefer to spend their festival holidays with their relatives, trains from Coimbatore to important locations including Delhi and Mumbai are booked till the second week of September.
A large number of disappointed men and women were seen in all reservation counters in the city after they were told that tickets have been booked till the end of Ramadan, Vinayaka Chathurthi and Onam festivals.
On the busy Coimbatore-Chennai route, no booking even in waiting list is possible till September 4. The trains bound for Bangalore, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore were also completely booked.
Though Southern Railway on Tuesday announced special trains in Coimbatore-Chennai route on August 30 and 31, all the tickets were sold within 24 hours. Same is the case of Chennai-Mangalore special train, which passes through Podanur.
According to railway sources, seats in all the 52 Kerala-bound trains were booked till September end. Similarly, no booking could be made to Bhubaneswar till September 26.
The heavy festival rush has its impact on the prestigious Nilgiri Mountain Railway as well. All the seats of the reserved compartment have been booked till the end of September.
The most disappointed commuters are those who wish to spend their summer in Bangalore. No special summer night train has been sanctioned despite pressure from passenger associations and railway officials here. The only night train from Bangalore that passes through Coimbatore is the over-crowded Island Express bound for Kanyakumari. Even during previous festival occasions, special Bangalore-Nagercoil trains had skipped Coimbatore and passed through Erode.
"This pathetic situation is the railway`s own creation. It is happening in festival season and railways have no idea how to handle the rush," P R Natarajan MP, who is consistently taking up the issue with the railways, said.
According to businessman R Vijayakumar, even short business trips to places like Trichy is complicated because of the lack of enough trains. "I`m planning to go by bus to Trichy in the next two weeks in the absence of trains. I have to shuttle between the two cities at least six times next week," he said.
"We have very few seats under the tatkal quota and the chances of cancellation are very minimal. So, travelling during the summer months for residents of Coimbatore depends on sheer luck," said a senior station officer.
In Chennai-bound trains, commuters are being forced to cancel their waitlisted tickets at the last hour in the absence of confirmation. According to reservation officials, as many as 300 waitlisted tickets for each train in the Chennai-Coimbatore route get cancelled at the last hour on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
"As people are booking tickets from different corners of the country and outside, it is very difficult to find out the number of seats available in Coimbatore and the percentage of increase during festival seasons,`` said a senior official.

chidambaram_mech04 August 26th, 2011, 07:52 AM Dear members,
I thank 'The Hindu', CBE edition wholeheartedly, for publishing the views of mine regarding the recent article / news item on 'Circular railway link to Coimbatore'.
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/article2380991.ece
Rail loop lines
The report on circular railway link to Coimbatore made good reading (Aug. 14).
In fact, a loop line from Irugur to Coimbatore via Nanjundapuram existed till the fifties.
The legendary Blue Mountain Express (at present called Nilgiri Express), one of the prestigeous trains of Southern Railway, used to chug on those tracks.
When the Railway Board and the Southern Railway seem to ignore the second line between Irugur and Coimbatore north and not even diverting through Coimbatore a single train that skips the junction, restoration of such old loop lines via Nanjundapuram to Coimbatore Junction will be a pipe dream. The warning by Railway Passengers Association of Coimbatore to oppose the survey on doubling the Irugur-Podanur byepass line (as announced in the recent budget) should be viewed with the importance it deserves.
If Irugur-Podanur byepass section is doubled all Kerala-bound trains will be diverted through that line leaving Coimbatore and Nilgiris without any train connectivity.
Ravi. S,
Coimbatore
chidambaram_mech04 August 26th, 2011, 07:53 AM Dear members,
'The Hindu', CBE edition has carried out an exclusive news item / article on the completion of one full year since the Irugur - Coimbatore north section was doubled.

Track ready, wait for trains continues
V.S. Palaniappan
After a two-decade wait, Coimbatore got a second railway line between Coimbatore and Irugur in 2010, which was expected to bring more train services to Coimbatore.
But even after commissioning the line on August 23, 2010, Coimbatore continues to wait for re-routing trains via Coimbatore which are at present run on the Podanur – Irugur – Podanur sections.
As many as 13 pairs of weekly, tri-weekly, bi-weekly and daily trains besides special trains are skipping Coimbatore Junction.
Most of the trains are bound for Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Yeshwanthpur, Tirunelveli, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Interestingly only a few of the trains stop even at Podanur. A majority of them skips Coimbatore and Tirupur districts.
Southern Railway and Salem Division say that it is for the Railway Board to take a decision on re-routing of trains.
A plea to re-route trains submitted to Railway Board was referred to Southern Railway. But, after eight months, the plea was referred back to Railway Board. Southern Railway's stance is that the power to decide on re-routing of trains rests with Railway Board, said R. Raveendran of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore.
K. Ramakrishnan of Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam pointed out that Coimbatore has a revenue potential and demand for new train services. But Railways was neglecting Coimbatore. Coimbatore is the largest revenue spinner in Southern Railway next only to Chennai. Mr. Ramakrishnan said that organisations in Coimbatore were planning to move court seeking a directive to the Railways in this regard.
S. Vaidyanathakrishnan of Coimbatore Railway Passengers Association said that Southern Railway was not willing to divert trains through Coimbatore as Kerala would stand to lose a considerable share of quota of seats.
Though 90 per cent utilisation is considered saturation level, Podanur – Irugur single track's capacity utilisation is 91 per cent.
Whereas Coimbatore – Irugur line has only 84 per cent of capacity utilisation. Still railways wants to run trains on this section just to skip Coimbatore Junction, said Mr. Vaidyanathakrishnan.
Now Southern Railway is proposing doubling of the line between Podanur and Irugur, which will permanently deny Coimbatore more trains. Podanur – Irugur should be a freight corridor.
Routing trains via Coimbatore will be a win-win situation for passengers as well as railways as it would meet the demands and generate revenue, Mr. Ravi pointed out.

Dear members,
Hasty decision
Southern Railway has announced in one of their press release regarding cancellation of 06066/ 6065 Coimbatore - Tirupati special trains due to ‘poor patronage'. One can term this decision as hasty and premature. The annual Brahmotsavams in the holy temple town of Tirupati as well as the winter holidays would have definitely attracted a good amount of pilgrim traffic from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Salem towards Tirupati.
Moreover, the existing rakes of the tri weekly Coimbatore - Tirupati Express (12758/57) only are used for operating this special train on Thursdays, and hence there is no requirement of provision of additional rakes for operating this special.
Given these circumstances, Southern Railway could have waited for some more time, and operated this special train as there is every possibility for the improvement in patronage for this special train.
Perhaps, Southern Railway commercial wing is applying its stringent yardsticks relating to patronage etc. for reckoning continuous operation of such special trains confined only to Coimbatore as one can see some trains like 12653/54 Tiruchchirappalli -Mangalore weekly train (regular) which is skipping Coimbatore Junction and is operated via Irugur - Podanur bye pass line hardly getting good occupancy.
Railways should try to improve the patronage of such trains by diverting them via Coimbatore Junction.
Ravi,
Coimbatore

Also, few details reg. annual earnings of various stations in S.Rly jurisdiction are given ( other than Chennai, of course)

Coimbatore Junction neglected
V.S. Palaniappan
Cancellation of the recently-introduced Tirupati Intercity Special train on Thursdays citing poor patronage and delay in announcing extension of the Coimbatore–Rameshwaram weekly special train have once again brought to the fore the continued neglect of Coimbatore region by the railway administration, say consumer organisations.
Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) secretary K. Kathirmathiyon said Coimbatore had the highest annual revenue of Rs. 122 crore and was the highest revenue spinner next only to Chennai. Palakkad earned Rs. 38 crore, Ernakulam Rs. 104 crore and Thiruvananthampuram, though it is Kerala's Capital, had only Rs. 118 crore revenue annually. Coimbatore is the gateway to Kerala and the tourist destination Udhagamandalam.
Even after doubling the railway line, 13 trains skip Coimbatore Junction despite demand from passengers. In fact, the trains skipping Coimbatore Junction run to Chennai, Mangalore, Yeswantpur, Tiruvananthapuram, Puducherry, Bilaspur, Ernakulam, Tiruchirapalli and Kannur with Coimbatore passengers being waitlisted and forced to travel by Omni buses. Southern Railway should route the trains via Coimbatore instead of Irugur–Podanur-Irugur as it would only increase the running time by 20 minutes.
An activist S. Ravi said Southern Railway should not have hastily cancelled the Coimbatore – Tirupati special train running on Thursdays, especially with Brahmostavam and the holiday season round the corner. Mr. Ravi wanted the Tiruchirapalli–Mangalore train to be diverted via Coimbatore.
Mr. Kathirmathiyon urged the Railway Board and the Southern Railway to announce further extension of the special train from Coimbatore to Rameshwaram. Ever since the introduction, the train was running to its full capacity. Mr. Jameel Ahmed of Railway Users Welfare Association said it was connecting seven district headquarters and was restoring the rail connectivity with pilgrim centres such as Thirupullani, Erwadi and Rameshwaram after nearly a decade.
It was a boon for the migrant workforce as well.
Mr. Kathirmathiyon said passengers who tried to book tickets after October 8 were told that the train was cancelled. When there was patronage, the Railways should extend the train without waiting for the operational period to come an end.
He also requested the railways that one more second sleeper coach be added to the train besides increasing frequency as tri-weekly or at least bi-weekly.

It seems Dinamalar is pressing the issue heavily regarding the SR's activity of not diverting the 13 trains via Cbe Jn. Here is another news Item
From the RTI act, the information collected by Mr. Kathirmathiyon of Coimbatore Consumer Cause,is the revenue of Cbe Jn is more than important cities of Kerala
Coimbatore Jn 122 Cr.
Palakkad- 38 Cr.
Ernakulam-104 Cr.
Trivandrum-118.
But even then the Kerala bound trains are not entering CBE Jn.
Sr also neglects CBE-POL-DGL by alloting small amount to the works.
and also there is no basic amenities.
and also Kerala authorities said, if Irugur- North CBe additional track is made into use means the usage will increase and it lead to track damage, but in Kerala most of the tracks are Double the times than the prescribed usage..Mr.Kathirmathiyon collected those details also from the RTI Act.
A huge protest is needed against SR's Activities or else they even finished another track for Irugur to Podanur..and all their trains will never touch CBE..:ohno::ohno:

CBE-SINGAKUTTY September 2nd, 2011, 09:12 AM Singapore Airlines promotes travel deals
By Shyamala Seetharamanan Sep 01 2011 , Chennai
Singapore Airlines plans to promote leisure travel from India to South Asian destinations including Bali, Thailand, Japan and China. The company is tying up with travel agents to woo Indian travelers, a senior official said.
Richard Tan, manager – southern India, Singapore Airlines, said “Along with our sister airlines Silk Air, we now operate daily flights from most major cities in India. The idea is to market complete tour packages rather than selling just air tickets. We have also partnered with tourism boards of different countries including Malaysia and Indonesia to promote their important destinations. Apart from plans to increase frequency from existing routes, we are also contemplating new routes including Tiruchirapalli and Coimbatore based on demand,” he added.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Silk Air cover at least 98 destinations in close to 40 countries. The airline provides the best connectivity from India to the Far East, Australia, New Zealand and the US West coast through the Singapore Changi Airport, Tan said.
The airline is the flagship carrier of Singapore. SIA has diversified into airline-related businesses such as aircraft handling and engineering. Its wholly owned subsidiary Silk Air manages regional flights to secondary cities with smaller capacity requirements. SIA has a 49 per cent shareholding in Virgin Atlantic and is present in the low-cost carrier sector through its stake in Tiger Airways.
“We also plan to start our own low-cost service in the first quarter of next year. Low-cost domestic players (such as SpiceJet and Indigo) have started to fly to international destinations and this is definitely adding to the pressure of existing airline companies. The situation becomes a little more difficult during worsening economic conditions. More players compete in a limited, shrinking market,” he said.
The company has just appointed a chief executive officer for its low-cost carrier service.

Southern Railway officials have dismissed as speculative and baseless, reports about winding up of the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) and suspension of service from October 5.
For the last few days, rumours have been doing the rounds that ‘suspension' of NMR services from October 5 for Permanent Way Maintenance works is a first step towards winding up the heritage railway system.
NMR has an extended UNESCO's world heritage status along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway System.
Annual loss
It was also rumoured that the Railways had decided to wind up NMR because of the annual loss of Rs.5 crore in running services on the ‘unviable' section.
The NMR services frequently run into trouble owing to technical snags faced by locomotives during the uphill haul. Landslips affect the track alignment during heavy rain.
Officials clarified that the rumours were based on the decision of Southern Railway to issue only general tickets for journeys beginning October 5 and stop reservation. This was to avoid passengers with confirmed tickets being disappointed because of sudden cancellation of the service.
There was no move for long-term or permanent suspension of services, officials said, added that Permanent Way Maintenance was a regular exercise.
In the last few years, Southern Railway has spent over Rs.20 crore on the maintenance of locomotives and permanent way for ensuring uninterrupted operations of the NMR.
In November 2009, the section suffered extensive damage owing to rain and landslips at over 170 places. The loss was estimated at Rs.12 crore.
The restoration of the section on a war footing, notwithstanding the unfriendly terrain, is considered one of the major achievements in the history of Southern Railway, an official from the Salem division said.
The NMR came into existence in phases, with the Mettupalayam – Coonoor rack and pinion system inaugurated on June 15, 1899; the Coonoor Fern Hill section on September 15, 1908; and Fern Hill to Udhagamandalam on October 15, 1908.
Every year, September 15 is observed as NMR Day.
NMR services on the Coonoor – Udhagamandalam section is hauled by diesel locomotives and the Mettupalayam – Coonoor section by steam locomotives. The train is operated using the X Class Swiss locomotives.
Recently, the Golden Rock Workshop of the Railways at Tiruchirapalli embarked on manufacturing indigenous locomotives to run the NMR service. The first loco has been inducted into the system.
For every tourist visiting the Nilgiris, travelling by NMR at least in one direction is a dream. The train from Mettupalayam to Kallar runs on a normal track and from there it switches run on to the rack and pinion system for easy uphill haul on Asia's steepest track. The train chugs along through scenic areas during the 41.8-km journey and negotiates 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. The uphill journey takes 290 minutes and the down hill one 215 minutes.

COIMBATORE: In a major bid to modernize signal patterns and regularize traffic flow in the city, police are planning to start a special corridor of green signals on Avinashi Road in another two weeks. Once the signal timings are reset, motorists can drive through the otherwise busy Avinashi Road, from the rail overbridge to Sitra bus stop near the airport without having to stop at any point.
``The busiest Avinashi Road is being used by a number of people from South Coimbatore to reach airport and various commercial points in and around Sitra. They have to cover 11 signals before completing the 7-km stretch and those who are riding vehicles had to wait at each signal for at least five minutes. Now, the green corridor is going to provide a hassle-free journey for those bound for airport,'' said city police commissioner Amaresh Pujari.
According to him, those who start from the railway over bridge at a speed of 50 km per hour can crisscross all the signals in 20 minutes. The commissioner, who conducted a test driving on Tuesday morning, took 17 minutes to reach the airport. However, he took only 13 minutes in the afternoon when there was less number of vehicles in the road.
"Many stakeholders are urging us to reduce the speed-limit in the green signal to 45 km per hour. Bus operators are saying that the 50-km speed is not suitable to them as they have to stop at many places in between. I will consult experts in another two weeks and implement the green corridor system in a way conducive for all,'' said Pujari.
It has been decided to discard the earlier signal pattern and attempt a similar move in the Trichy Road, which runs parallel to Avinashi Road.
"Vehicle movement is very high on the two arterial roads. So, we have planned to reset the timer in traffic signals on the two main roads. Within two weeks, the 'green corridor project' will be introduced on the Avinashi Road and the same would be experimented in Trichy Road later. Thereafter, riders can cross the Avinashi Road stretch from Avinashi Road rail overbridge to Sitra without stopping anywhere. But the rider must follow the speed limit of 50 km/hour," said Pujari.
There are four signals in Tiruchi Road. The police will also fix digital boards on both sides of Avinashi Road and Tiruchi Road asking motorists to follow traffic rules strictly.

Committee to fight for Coimbatore's share of rail infrastructure
Special Correspondent
In order to end the ‘continuous neglect' of Coimbatore by the Southern Railway, a Citizens Struggle Committee was formed on Tuesday to fight until the ‘genuine' demands of Coimbatore are met.
First meeting
The committee will have its first meeting at Hotel Annamalai on Railway Station Road on September 23 to chalk out its plans and further course of action. All activities of the committee will be led by Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan, a release from G.K. Nagaraj, Convenor of Kongu Nadu Munnetra Kazhagam, said.
The committee will first meet the General Manager of Southern Railway and Chairman of Railway Board and present a detailed representation highlighting the long pending demands of Coimbatore region.
Double line
It will vehemently oppose the proposal to lay a double line between Podanur and Irugur at a cost of nearly Rs.70 crore. The existing double line between Coimbatore Junction and Irugur is lying underutilised despite persistent demands for re-routing the 13 pairs of trains that are skipping Coimbatore Junction and being operated via Podanur and Irugur.
The proposed doubling of the Podanur – Irugur railway line is only a “design” of the railways to divert more trains off Coimbatore.

wlbkng September 24th, 2011, 08:51 AM LPA explores multi-tier parking facility in the city
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00788/CB22_PARKING_788743f.jpg
The parking area maintained by the Corporation on the Cross Cut Road in the city is one of the locations identified by the LPA for multi-tier parking.
The Local Planning Authority (LPA) is likely to fund select infrastructure projects in the city that will help ease traffic congestion.
An official of the LPA told The Hindu on Wednesday that with increasing number of vehicles, the city required more parking areas. During his recent visit to Coimbatore, Director of Town and Country Planning A. Karthik visited four sites that could be developed for multi-tier or mechanised parking. These were parking spaces now maintained by the Corporation at Ukkadam, R.S. Puram, Clock Tower area and Gandhipuram. The LPA would provide the funds for development of the facilities and nominal parking fee could be collected.
The Director also explored the possibility of installing escalators at Gandhipuram (near the bus stand) and on Tiruchi Road (in front of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital). The elderly were finding it difficult to use the foot overbridge at Gandhipuram.
On Tiruchi Road, the heavy traffic flow posed a problem for pedestrians who wanted to go to the hospital from the bus stand.
Another project that the LPA was expected to fund was a 60 feet road from Veerappa Thevar Colony to Nanjundapuram Road.
Though the LPA had earlier proposed a 100 feet scheme road from Nanjundapuram to Ukkadam bypass, land was already available for a 60 feet road till Veerappa Thevar Colony. Hence, this would be developed at the earliest, the official said.
Since the proposed projects were in the city, the Corporation should prepare a detailed project report and estimate for the proposals. The LPA had also sought suggestions and views of the Police and the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) on the projects. The projects would be finalised after obtaining the inputs from the local body and other agencies, the official said.
