I'm kind of surprised that I've never noticed this before, but with that pano of Shanghai, I only counted 2 bridges crossing the river. I'm sure there are more further in either directions, but it is still a long expanse between the 2 I see. Are there some underground tunnels somewhere. I forget if the city has a subway? BTW the river is called the Pearl River isn't it? Hence the name of the Pearl Observation Tower.

1.the river is not the Pearl River, the river is called Huangpu river.
2.Shanghai has more bridges across the river
3.yes the are many underground tunnels and some suways across the river.

Chicago seems under-represented in this thread (haha, yeah right when has Chicago ever been under-represented in any thread ;)) Here are some good pics I found on the net that show that Chi-town can hang with the big boys across the world.

http://www.tnicol.net/aviation/chicago2.jpg

Of course it's hard to show Chicago's density because outside of the ever-growing downtown area, it is prominently a low rise city, but most of these pictures show that the density is definitely there

You do realize that we are talking about endless buildup for certain cities, the reason Sean mention about those vancant lot or green opens that you can clearly see from aerial is a great indication of not so endless build up planning for moscow. Besides, I am pretty sure russian love some openess to their neighbor instead of urban layout like Sao paulo, Tokyo, NYC, Chicago metro...!

this is a thread about "endless buildup sea of megacities"..... i don't see sprawling build-up areas in those moscow pics.

you call those green areas "parks"? they're vacant grass lots next to housing projects and highways. hardly a pastoral getaway if you ask me.

in any case, those are quite unflattering views of moscow.

i mean, why would anyone post this pic:

TO_Joe

Thanks for all the great pics! Awesome!

Lots of great megacities. In my opinion:
1. It's hard to beat Sao Paulo in terms of high rise forever.
2. Tokyo and Osaka go on forever, but it isn't high rise enough yet -- they are working on it.
3. Los Angeles is low rise but in terms of sheer scale going on forever (100 miles in every direction), it is hard to beat.
4. New York and Chicago go on and on, but the high rise disticts, impressive as they are, are very concentrated. Once you get outside of Manhattan, it is low rise sprawl in every direction. Chicago looks like endless lowrise suburbia until you drive on I-90 eastbound and suddenly that "wall" of lakefront highrises hit you.
5. Big Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai are building upwards and are huge, but the high rise density have yet to be fully to reach Sao Paulo levels -- I have no doubts that they will in 10 years time, particularly Shanghai.

8,3 promila miał pijany rowerzysta w Milanówku

Kolejny rekordzista na drodze. Pijany rowerzysta, którego zatrzymali grodziscy policjanci, miał ponad 8,3 promila

Policjanci z grodziskiej drogówki wypatrzyli rowerzystę na ul. Ludnej w Milanówku. 55-letni mężczyzna jechał środkiem jezdni. - A właściwie toczył się - precyzuje st. sierż. Katarzyna Zych z komendy policji w Grodzisku Mazowieckim.

15.9 it was a rekord

Does this look suburban to you? Look at this density:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/i_am_hydrogen/40880779.jpg

I always hear people accusing Chicago of being "suburban" outside of its CBD, which is simply not true. Chicago may be low-rise, but it is very dense and urban.

^"Dense and modern"? I never referred to Chicago as "modern," so I'm not sure where that came from. As for dense, take another look at that photograph. Just about every last millimeter is covered with buildings. Many of those buildings are anywhere from 4-3 stories. With all due respect, if you can't see the density in that photograph, then you need LASIK surgery.

My excuse, I don't know why I said modern, I meant Urban, and that is definitly not urban, maybe urban by NA standarts but that is about it, look at the Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, Barcelona etc pictures, now that's what I call dense

A sea of 2-3 story buildings after a CBD for a few kilometres is not what I call dense

Hey, hydrogen! I know exactly what you mean! Just don't show them an EXTREME distant skyline view of Chicago metro when you talk about the density of Chicago, they can't possible see the detail! Since Chicago's elevations are really too far apart in the Loop and its metro area, that doesn't justify how dense andn endless concrete chicago metro has! GL!

A mega city is usally defined as being a city over all around 10,000,000.Why are pictures of Vancover,San Franciso,Copenhagen,Amsterdam,Toronto and some other cities posted?

That complaint we heard before... it's because the megacities over 10mio are limited to these 25 (okay the data are from 2003) and it's nice to see also some other big seas of buildings ;)

Tōkyō 34,100,000
Ciudad de México 22,650,000
Seoul 22,250,000
New York 21,850,000
São Paulo 20,200,000
Mumbai 19,700,000
Delhi 19,500,000
Los Angeles 17,950,000
Shanghai 17,900,000
Jakarta 17,150,000
Ōsaka 16,800,000
Kolkata 15,550,000
Al-Qāhirah (Cairo) 15,450,000
Manila 14,850,000
Karāchi 14,100,000
Moskva 13,750,000
Buenos Aires 13,400,000
Dhaka 13,100,000
Rio de Janeiro 12,100,000
Beijing 11,950,000
London 11,950,000 (okay please no dabate - it's in fact 18mio)
Tehrān 11,800,000
İstanbul 11,400,000 (same goes for this one)
Lagos 11,000,000
Shenzhen 10,450,000

You can also add Rhein-Ruhr with 11mio

Not anymore... in the 50s and 60s the growth was the biggst in the world and really out of control. But nowadays they try hard to reurbanize the city and provide it with better infrastrucutre (own lanes for buses, tunnels, big scale urban development as in Barra Funda, the Tiete project etc.)

Perhaps, however if you look at how close the cities are, then these three agglomerations are the only true agglomerations. NY, Tokyo and Los angeles are just greater metropolitan areas incorporating various smaller cities. The randstad/ruhr ahrea/belgian diamond are actual distinct cities that have grown so large that they touch. Ie; Megalopolis. I can't consider NY or tokyo to be such, maybe LA. To be more specific, i consider conurbanization to be the definition of an aglomeration, not a single city growing that large. By this definition, the randstad and the the ruhr area are the largest in the world.

Also, it's not true they're not continuous. The randstad is continuous in urban development. The greater geographical area that i mentioned isn't, but it isn't far off.

Until it is, it's not the largest urban area in the world. Simple as that.
It is, of course, just a matter of time until that happens - but New York and Tokyo will grow during that time as well.
The Pearl River Delta will most likely become a megalopolis in the true sense of it before anything like that happens in Europe.

7th most? What incomplete Emporis says. Only in Brazil and China there are lots of cities having more than that! Sao Paulo, Rio, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba,Recife and Goiânia have all more than 2,000 buildings 12+...
And in China it must be at least twice the number of cities with more than 2,000 buildings!!!! :)

I must respectfully disagree, none of those other areas are as dense as any of these three regions. The randstad is a megalopolis in the true sense of the word. The only other true megalopoli could be called the ruhr area and the greater Tokyo area. (note that the term megalopolis does not reflect on the total population of the area)

I have already been to Istanbul. I have a friend there. She lives in Atasehir which was built with lots of greenery and parks. But you are right, that there are some regions that need more greenery, so in almost every huge city in the world. :)

I know that curitiba has more than 2,000 buildings. Everyone can ask that at the city administration! And when I compare the city to Recife, Rio or Belo Horizonte I can say that these other cities have even more than Curitiba - thus also more than 2,000 buildings! Just have a look at Balneário Camboriú. The official tourist homepage says it has 1,035 such buildings (in 2001) with only 80,000 inhabitants!!! Okay there are 1.5 million tourists each summer season, but even though it is a lot!!! :)

You should see it as a whole. The buildings considered are those 14+ storeys. And if you believe it or not, doesn't matter, since there ARE more than 2,000! :)

well, do u think EMPORIS is accurate? They rely on data submited or edited by a few editors for each country. Brazil´s two Emporis editors POST HERE ON SSC... and they say themselves they havent covered 10% of the 12+ buildings in Brasil...

I personally submited 15 out of some 40 12+ buildings from my city, Novo Hamburgo, which was not even listed on Emporis.

Of course not. but until something more accurate comes out we might as well rely on Emporis rather than say "my city has 8,000,000 skyscrapers!!!!!", based on nothing. Besides, if certain cities are incomplete, you'd think that most major ones would be the same as well, right? (just to a differing degree of accuracy)
