I was born there, but we moved to Hudur town, Bakool region when I was young.

What is true about all those stories about war and hunger?

Most regions in Somalia from the north to south enjoy a fair degree of stability and are showing quite impressive economic growth despite 20+ years of no government. There is some truth to what you see in the news but most of it is exaggerated.

Here in Holland Somalia is mainly in the news in relation with war, famine and terrorism but this looks like a peaceful and reasonably prosperous place, they have cars, electricity and even a university!!!

Wacht maar tot dat je foto's van andere gebieden in Somalie ziet. Je zal echt verrast zijn. Heb je de "country gallery" bekeken ? zou je moeten doen :)

Ik denk niet dat dat de media een eerlijke en evenwichtige afspiegeling geeft van de situatie in de verschillende regio's van het land. Ze kiezen om zich te concentreren op de negatieve aspecten en de eventuele positieve ontwikkelingen te negeren. Helaas geldt het omgekeerde van de ouderdom gezegde "geen nieuws is goede nieuws" ... goede nieuws is geen nieuws.

For some reason, I thought Beledweyne was a more green area.

I know it has the Shebelle going through it but I didn't know it was surrounded by this kind of environment.

The war only affects in and around Mogadisho area, the rest of Somalia have always been peacefull.:)

Mashalah, Beledweyne is booming. This city got huge potential not only to be an agricultural powerhouse but also to be an educational center. Love it!

Good pictures Nina. I know it is hard to get recent images of Hiran region aand central Somali regions in general. Hopefully the recent events such as the defeat of Alshabab terrorist will encourage people to visit and take pictures.

Geelo is a Somali NGO, it's fairly new (2 yrs or so) and was founded and headed by a diasporan Somali female. During the past year and half Geelo has dug wells in Hiiran, established soup kitchens for the drought stricken natives, clothed the IDPs in and around Beledweyne, build a clinic for mothers and children and so much more. There are thousands of NGO working in Somalia but only few actually deliver what they set out to do and Geelo is one them.

The first ever Public Library in Hiran was opened, in rented premises, in 1999 as a result of the efforts of a Support Group which had been established in Birmingham, UK in 1998.

The building went up in the autumn of 2000. It was built on land given by local leaders who were eager to see the Public Library move to purpose built premises. It cost £6,000. This money had been raised by the UK based Support Group. In November 2006 the veranda was damaged when the River Shebelle burst its banks and floodwater engulfed 90% of the town. Repairs have recently been carried out and the front has been re-decorated with very pleasing results.

How the Library functions. It is open six days of the week. It is staffed by a Library Manager and an assistant librarian with special expertise in IT. A cleaner and a night watchman are also employed. The Library provides a very popular amenity. It used by many Beled-Weyne residents, including school students as well as visitors from other neighbouring towns of Somalia.
