Beijing risks being Olympic loser

The Ming Dynasty had the Forbidden City, and Mao Zedong had Tiananmen Square. Now China's present-day emperors too are constructing a new Beijing in their own image.

Throughout the city, stunning buildings are breaking ground in time for the 2008 Olympics, the symbolic moment, the country believes, when it will resume its place among the world's great powers.

The "Duck Egg" - the new national theater - is almost complete. The "Bird's Nest," as the Olympic stadium has been called for its steel lattice-work, and the "Blue Cube," the swimming pool complex, are rising.

Elsewhere ever grander state buildings are materializing as they are stripped of their scaffolding. But just at the moment of glory, the new designs by celebrated architects from Europe and Australia have set off a major controversy. Public figures are criticizing the billions of yuan being spent, while leading members of the architectural establishment have added their own complaint: there is nothing at all Chinese about them.

Long before Beijing was awarded the Games, it was clear that for the party leadership they were a chance to clear the stain of the Tiananmen Square massacre, and to reassure itself that it was now a "grown-up" country.

No expense was to be spared: perhaps 40 billion (HK$568 billion) is to be spent creating a new city.

Leaving aside the venues themselves, there will be four new subway lines, an airport - designed by Norman Foster to be the largest in the world - and a new financial district.

That is on top of the encouragement given to private developers to raze old neighborhoods and replace them with apartment blocks. More than 300,000 people will be relocated.

The first indication that there was a problem with this vision, essentially the work of former president Jiang Zemin, came when work ceased on the new tower for China television.

Budgeted at 400 million, and designed by Dutch avant-garde architect Rem Koolhaas, it resembles two upside-down Ls leaning against each other like a pair of drunks.

It emerged that incoming Premier Wen Jiabao, a man whose reputation was built on being down to earth and concerned for the poor, had called for a review. Eventually it was deemed too late to stop. But in the meantime the national theater building was also under fire. Its controversial dome was the work of Paul Andreu, the Frenchman whose terminal building at Charles de Gaulle airport suffered a fatal collapse in May last year.

Proposals for the Olympic village had so far been immune from criticism.

Indeed, China took pride from jokes in spring 2004 that its Olympics would be ready before the Athens ones.

But then even the International Olympic Committee began to get cold feet, and suggested that the city moderate its pace.

Work on the Swiss-designed "Bird's Nest" stopped while its exorbitant use of steel - 160,000 tons, or 22 Eiffel Towers - was cut, by deciding not to go ahead with the sliding roof. The rebuilding is now on track again.

But while many residents are resigned to the destruction of what remains of the Ming city, in return for modern conveniences, some establishment voices have begun to raise their voices. In a speech this month, Wu Liangyong, a professor at Qinghua University, said the city was an "experimenting ground for foreign architects."

"These buildings will be a scar left on the face of time, which will record our pains forever," he said.

"Once the land is used and this unreasonable urbanization spread, it is irreversible."

In contrast to the early days of the Olympics, state media have allowed a debate, with even the People's Daily publishing attacks on the loss of the city's character. Even some of the defenders

have pointed out that China, despite its Olympic-sized ambitions, was still too underdeveloped to have the expertise to design world-class buildings.

Some issues, however, are still too sensitive.

Few newspapers or architects mention the grand boulevard intended to connect the Olympic village to the city's historic center.

It is being designed by Albert Speer, a well-respected architect but also the son and namesake of the man who built Nazi Berlin, including a similar boulevard for the 1936 Olympics. Comparison of Beijing 2008 and "Hitler's Games" are a step too far in modern China.

"Evil communist country"? If you truly believed that then I believe it's safe to assume you are 1.) naive and 2.) stereotypical.

The reason that you're naive is because you assumed that a country of 5,000 years of history and a current population of 1.3 billion to be nothing but "evil". If you've taken even a single sociology class you'd realize that there is no such thing as an "evil country", only governments who are willing to sacrifice its people's freedom and happiness in order to achieve its interests. Of course, all governments do that to some extend (including the U.S.) though some do it more than others and some do it more at different times. A good example would be the post-911 U.S. is much less "free".

As for being stereotypical, it should be pretty obvious as you, again, assumed that a country of 1.3 billion people are all "evil" and "communists".

In any case, no one is perfect and we all have our flaws. I am in no way attempting to offend you, not that any mature, rational adult could be easily insulted from being criticized by an anonymous individual over the Internet. The tone of his post is mainly "wow - I'm impressed" but you go and pick up on one throwaway phrase and have a rant about it making all kinds of unjustified assumptions about what kind of a person he is. I hope for your sake it's the latter because as it stands your post says more negative things about you than him. The middle building with a red roof looks so stylish!

I love Bejing low rise modern buildings, they use to be so wide, and very Chinese looking. I think that Beijing is preserving the national identity in its modern architecture better than any other Chinese city while there are also being built many other unique and brave design buildings. A lot of personality!

The modern face of this city is amazing but quite underrated though...

There is no such thing as "absolute evil", but evil does exist, an attribution that may vary according to different social norms. For example, to people who value self-determination, freedom, democracy and basic human rights like myself, China, North Korea and the Roh administration are evil. However, to people who place more emphasis on social stability and unity, China can be a model example.

Also, many people may use the term "country" to refer to the government that governs it, not its people.

Yes, countries can refer to the people who are governed by the respective political unit, but knowledgeable individuals should be able to dicern between the various meanings by context. For example, JC here said China is an evil, communist country. Unless ones assumes that JC is an ultra-racist who believes China is infested with crime-loving "evil" communists, I believe it is common sense that the attributions of "evil" and "communist" are directed towards the political organization called CCP, not the people, especially for a country where the form of political organization is not determined by the those ruled. This kind of use for the term can lead to misunderstandings, but this is not some court of law where they bitch eachother on the specific meanings of words. I think we should be open to the possibility that people can use the same term for different meanings.

If I said North Korea is an "evil communist country", would anyone interpret that as an attack against the North Korean people? If someone said South Korea is an evil dictatoral country, would I see it as a racist disparage on the South Korean people? When I make my defence on such comments, I will be defending the former regime that held power in South Korea, not the people who were oppressed by it.

I do understand Pangu's point that we have to clearly express ourselves to avoid misinterpretations, but what I would like to say is that this is no court of law or an academic discussion where concepts have to be made clear to make one's point. The context of her speech was casual in nature, and we should just take her meaning casually, interpreting it in the most casual sense. It's true that JC was very ignorant of China's current political status, but she did admit that her perspective on China has changed. It is my personal opinion that Pangu was distorting JC's true intetions when he made JC's comments into a racist attack against the Chinese people, when it is best interpreted as an attack on the poliitcal organization of China.

I don't know how your father sees it, but my perspective on the concept "evil" is that it goes against one's social norm, something that people would expect from others in everyday life. For example. you will not expect someone to stab you in the back for fun on your way to work. If something like that happens, it's evil and it should be punished. Surely we criminal justice majors will be out of the job if nothing evil happens, but what the hell, there are always someone doing something evil out there. I'm a supporter of Hirschi & Gottfredson(General Theory of Crime) by the way.. ask your father about them, and maybe you'll get some idea on the "assumptions" I make on human nature. Not that I'm their blind followers, I have my own personal theoritical grounds mainly based on psychology.

Government ≠ country. A country is made up of many elements, INCLUDING government. If you want to say a government is evil, then just say the government is evil, and leave the people alone.

Criminal Justice doesn't necessarily thrive on the existance of evil. Criminal Justice thrives on the existance of control and social order, and yes my perspective that people are innately(the condition when no restraints exist. i.e. god mode and noclip in the real world) selfish and "evil" can be somewhat subjective, because all my convictions on social problems are fundamentally based on that "assumption" of human nature. Without it, my perspectives on this world will be completely undermined, and to reconstruct my perspectives is a process that I don't want to go through :) There's a term for this, it's called cognitive dissonance.

Although I am not from mainland China but I still consider myself Chinese. So pardon me if I am reluctant to excuse someone from calling China an "evil communist country".

Well, I don't really think you did something morally wrong. I just think it could've been put in a better way. Anyways, this has been way overblown from its original intent. I was just saying that she didn't necessarily mean the Chinese people when she said "evil communist country", and that's all I meant.

You are still over-generalising from your own experience. Let me try to make
you understand: the meaning of the word "country" does not include
"government", therefore, when you call a country "evil communist country", you
are effectively calling every one in that country an "evil communist". If you want
to criticize the government, then use the word "government". I don't think it's
alright to assume that people will automatically understand what you mean, no
matter how you say it. The head word for the phrase "evil communist country"
is "country", so, when you bash a "country", you offend all the people from that
country.

Anyways the city looks great and Beijing has a lot of nice buildings. Actually Beijing looks quite comfortable and organized. Shanghai is busy but its somewhat chaotic compared to Beijing.

OMG! The Golden Resorces Shopping Mall in Beijing is indeed huuuuuuuge!
Beijing is in a building spree. This and soon the world's largest single airport terminal.

Why, too few cars? Not that popular is it? :( Just asking...

Hopefully the Chinese would embrace the mall culture sometime in the near future or this mall will get bankrupt or eventually be heavily debt ridden that it would close. Now that would be bad. Oh please...(hands crossed)...let that not happen. I love it when China has the largest of everything. That's my dream.

Beautiful. I think architecturally, Beijing puts a lot more detail into its buildings (however they're just not tall) than compared to Shanghai or any other Chinese city. Too bad Beijing doesn't have that grand or imposing of a skyline.

wwwcom, you should add more pictures and possibly make threads for other cities too.

Beijing has a height restriction on the areas near Tiananmen. Cannot be taller than the great hall of the people I believe.

And plus, it's a trend in most capital cities. Busting sky scrapers are for financial centers. Too effecient for politicians.

Government offices and those srrounding are grander (in terms of foundation size), but shorter and much more impressive in design.

Take all capitals, Washington DC, Paris, Ottawa, Soul.

Tokyo is the only exception, but that's another story for another day.

Actually in terms of skyscrapers, Tokyo still doesn't compare to other financial centers such as Shanghai, Chicago, Hong Kong, New York... etc.

Also, Beijing's Guomao disctrict is starting to have more and more skyscrapers.

My dear Chinese friends,

I really can't see what is setting u guys up here. In my eyes the pictures are only presenting the charming street life of 老北京 and in no way meant to shed any bad light on neither the city nor their people. Even the short descriptions under the pics don't say one bad word at all but instead indicate how much those simple people actually enjoy their life.

U wonder why they are only showing pics of old Beijing's neighbourhoods? Well, u shouldn't forget that modern areas like Wangfujing and the likes aren't as interesting for westerners as they are hardly different from urban surroundings in western cities. Anyway, what's so bad about westerners finding traditional chinese lifestyle fascinating? I think u got a little oversensitive here and see attacks and insults where there are in fact only interest and curiousity...

I've been in Beijing for two months now and even the slums aren't quite as bad as some people make them out to be. For example, I went around near the Bell Tower the other day. Some might call the nearby areas slums, but they have running water, decent restrooms, etc.

Well As a certified Friend of China I must say that there is such a thing as attempts by some western Media to show China in a negative way, or to be precise to find "what is wrong with China" but this pictures aren't part of that circus!
These ARE really charming and warm pictures showing something what many people in the West have completely lost but still remember of - sense of community life beyond just self. warmth and mutual attention and help.
I guess some Chinese could find them not too much to they liking cause they see "slum", but trust me only "redneck" in Europe and elsewhere would see slum, or those who are in slums themselves, and there are slums in Europe, just take a few Blocks from gleaming building of EU parliament in Brussels!! And those slums of Europe are much worse in a way, cause real despair is living there. At least people in hutong in China see this rapid improvement and know that tomorrow will be better then today, while majority of people in Europe living in constant fear that tomorrow will be worse then today. And that makes HUGE difference! And is one reason for all that China bashing!
Instead of old men playing cards you would have bitter lonely old people largely abandoned by they children sitting in they nice apartments, dying there and being discovered people in Western Europe have been grow to rely mostly on state or society and not family. Doing so you create somewhat passive and “manageable” society which when feed enough would think of revolution and wouldn’t be able to organize one. And everything worked well till the moment when demographics make this system bankrupt and god know what shall follow.
But back to those pictures... in a way it is sad that this way of life is disappearing, but I totally understand that people deserve better conditions of life, still would be nice if authorities would find means to preserve at least some of those traditional neighborhoods (modernizing infrastructure and providing all modern amenities of course) that some sunny and warm afternoon it would be possible to wonder into those small streets and still see those old men playing cards! :cheers1:

Phew! This is a life saver thread!! Never seen a beijing thread for way too long!!:)

Btw, im going to beijing this friday and are there any fantastic shopping streets within the city, attractions and other places of interest?:) how do i get there? thanks alot for any advices!!:):cheers: will take lots of pics while there!!

if it's your first time, then do see all those big attractions on the tourist book.

For shopping I prefer Xidan area, it's not very upscale but more like a hangout spot for teenagers. Wangfuji IMO is overrated, and there are some upscale shops in the CBD area.

I went to Beijing in July for 5 days. The air quality was awful most of the days (4 out of 5). You can't see more than 5m in front of you because it is so smoggy (like fog). In the winter, the air quality probably is better.

My first post (on that trip I also went to Tianjin for 1 month, I have some pics, but mostly poor city even though that close to coast,)

After i returned back to Singapore, my Mum did the laundry and discovered a thick layer of coal dust on the floor once the clothes we wore in Beijing were washed!! This certainly shows something!!:ohno:

　　这次失败不仅是战略上的失败，更是战术上的失败。先放下进攻中国这样一个国家是否正确不说，就即使在作战中暴露出的问题也是相当严重的，我个人认为我军在战术方面是无懈可击的，我仅在地图交通方面，人民战争方面我方失败的原因作了以下分析：
　　地图交通：我军大意地使用了北京市旅游局的北京旅游图和北京公交公司的北京交通图以及北京地质勘探中心的北京地形图，我们错误的以为中国人给自己用的东西虽然算不上好，但决不会欺骗自己人。然而我们错了，在拿到这几张地图的第一天就注定了我们将要在一个错误的时间一个错误的地点和一个错误的国家打一场错误的战争。
　　1 原本要降落清华大学101空降师2团1营被错误的空降进入颐和园昆明湖中，会水的投降，不会水的淹死，533人无一逃脱。

The building to the left of this picture (behind the construction crane on the CCTV site) is the Beijing TV Centre. It is the tallest building in Beijing, though it does not recieve much recognition. you did not even realise it has been completed recently. It is the tallest completed building in Beijing until the completion of the Yintai Centre.
