BEIJING, Nov 6, 2007 (AFP) - China has started construction of the world's tallest Ferris wheel in central Beijing, due to be completed in 2009, state media reported Tuesday.

At 208 metres (686 feet), the Beijing Great Wheel, a giant slowly-rotating observation wheel, will allow visitors "an unsurpassed view of the city" from Chaoyang Park in central Beijing, the China Daily reported.

The question remains what people will be able to see from the top -- since visibility in the Chinese capital is sometimes reduced to just a few hundred metres by its notorious air pollution.

When completed, the 99-million-dollar giant wheel in Beijing will dwarf its 165-metre cousin in Singapore, which is being built by the same company, the Singapore-based Great Wheel Corp.

The Beijing wheel will also beat the 135-metre London Eye, currently the world's tallest observation wheel, the report added.

The Great Wheel company website said the wheel was originally due to begin turning on August 1 2008, just days before the start of the Olympic Games, but the news report quoted sources in the company as saying there had been delays due to design issues.

The Great Wheel Corp was not available to comment.

Its website said there would be 48 capsules on the Beijing wheel, each of them carrying up to 40 people at a time.

When are they going to build those amusement parks which all party leaders keep mentioning in conferences about improving entertainment industry and hence one way is to build amusement parks like disneyland??

There are no time table yet. Beijing govt is talking with Universal Studio and Shanghai is panning for Disneyland. Shanghai Disneyland time table might be teh first to be unveiled.
