Tourist Reviews of Eritrea
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/9827/asmara7.jpg
If there is a country that has ever deserved the overused titles like "hidden gem" or "overlooked jewel", Eritrea is it.
The mere name of this country along the Red Sea coast of East Africa tends to provoke blank looks from most people:
"Eritrea???
What... err... where is it, actually???"
History is partly to blame for sure. Under foreign occupation for centuries, Eritrea only appeared on the maps as an independent country in 1993, when its people have voted for leaving Ethiopia after decades of armed struggle. And ever since then, it has only hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
So that is why Eritrea is largely unknown to the World, but what makes it a gem?
First and foremost, its capital Asmara is the single most beautiful city in Africa, and an ethernal favourite of all those who have been there. Its history as an Italian colonial town has blessed it with an architectural legacy that would draw praise even in Europe. Beautiful buildings apart, the Italians have also left behind their impact on the local culture: cafeterias, pizzerias and fashionably dressed locals (including Africa's most beautiful women) make you feel far removed from the hectic, poverty-stricken and polluted cities of the rest of the continent. To further ensure a pleasant stay, Asmara's climate is as pleasant as it gets, with cool, dry, sunny weather throughout the year.
Wishing for something more exotic?
Asmara may feel like a piece of Italy, but out in the country you will find an amalgam of African cultures at their best. The highland plateu of southern Eritrea shares the ancient Orthodox Christian traditions of neighbouring Ethiopia, the peoples inhabiting the deserts to the west and along the Red Sea coast exhibit Muslim culture at its most colorful, while animistic, tribal Africa is represented by the Kunama and Nara of the south-west.
The landscapes range from lush, cool highlands to the hottest, most desolate deserts anywhere, towns and villages exhibit a curious mixture of traditionally African and Mediterranian influences, and wildlife, while nowhere nearly as abundant as in Kenya or Tanzania, is varied and includes many rare species.
Nevertheless, what really gives a lasting impression of Eritrea is her people. Eritreans are among the most educated, dignified and hospitable people I have met anywhere, and the begging, thievery and hassles encountered elsewhere in Africa quickly fade into distant memories here.
I visited Eritrea in 2004, as part of a three-month-long tour of North-East Africa, that also took me to neighbouring Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti and Somaliland. Due to Eritrea's relationship with these neighbours getting here required quite an amount of persistance and determination, but once I arrived, I felt it was all worth it. Eritrea has immediately became my favourite country in Africa, and I can only wish to return for a longer stay in the future.
If you are at all thinking about visiting this country, think no more - go!

The capital of newly independent Eritrea, Asmara is one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in the whole of Africa, if not anywhere in the World.
Situated at an elevation of 2400 metres above sea-level, its climate is pleasantly cool, but also dry and sunny for much of the year. Architecturally, it is a real feast for the eyes. Having been the centre of Italian colonial efforts in Africa in the first part of the 20th century, Asmara was blessed with beautiful buildings that would only draw praise in Italy as well. Even after the Italians were gone, the city has managed to escape the raveges of third world development, and has amazingly even survived the wars with Ethiopia intact. Current government policies also prevent it from become yet another sprawling, polluted African capital ringed with slums.
Not only is Asmara beautiful, clean and pleasantly cool, it is also a very safe and relaxed city, where one can walk around at any time of the day or night without having to worry about safety, or even more minor hassles like beggars.
The locals are a very cultured lot who seem to pride themselves on their city's Italian heritage, fondly call it "Little Rome", and cafeterias and pizzerias do a roaring trade along the city's main avenue.
And in case you start wondering whether all this comes at a price, you might be delighted to hear that Asmara is also among the cheapest capitals in the continent!
Not surprisingly, this is one of the few places that visitors almost invariably fall in love with instantly.

If you ignore the fear mongering of this video (that's how they get ratings these days) and the fictional historical claims being thrown around by the man dressed as a monk, this documentary is the latest one showcasing Eritrea throughout the PBS and National Geographic Channels.

It should reach a million soon haha. Those buses make me sick. All you need is some Guayla music and its already a hot mess.
Just a quick question. Did those new buses start service yet? Or are they waiting for the 20th Anniversary?

Mr. Eritrean April 2nd, 2011, 04:42 PM With 28 SU-27s and MiG-29s, each costing around 20-30 Million USD, the Eritrean Air Force is an insurance policy well spent to safe guard our independence.
SU-27 = F-16
SU-33 > F-16
The MiG-29 and the SU-27 make up much of Eritrea's Air force. The MiG-29 sells for anywhere between US$20-$27 million, depending upon the terms of the package deal, amount in barter versus hard currency, weapons/avionics suite, etc. The Su-27 is probably closer to $25-30 million, or, essentially, the price of a US F/A-18D.

Eritrea has nowhere close to 28 Su-27s. They may have up to 10, and they likely have fewer.
And these planes cannot safeguard your independence. If Ethiopia were to launch a large ground invasion a few Flankers couldn't stop it.

Why buy a new car when your old one works just fine? New cars are really expensive too. They do have 'newer' cars in the Rich Areas though.
Xusein April 2nd, 2011, 10:49 PM Lovely thread. Why does the cars in the country look so dated? The people are beautiful!
I don't see any difference between the cars in the photos posted than in other African countries. A large % of cars in Africa are secondhand.
Mr. Eritrean April 3rd, 2011, 01:26 AM Lovely thread. Why does the cars in the country look so dated? The people are beautiful!
I think it has more to do with individual budget constraints than anything else - It's a lot more rational to own a used car than it is to buy a new one. Culture also has to do with some of it. In America, the culture of car status is very strong, regardless if it means you'll be living paycheck to paycheck to own it. That mentality isn't as significant in Eritrea, at least for vehicles. I know guys who own 80,000 cars in the US but live with their mothers and struggle to pay even their gas bills. Had that been anywhere else, you'd be called a fool. But in America, you can rationalize that with the culture-context.

Aren't you the same Ethiopian guy who said Eritrea only had one SU-27 and told me to stop lying? Then I posted images of Eritrean SU-27s, then you said Eritrea had 2...then I posted more sources, and pictures, than you said, okay, Eritrea has maybe 4 or 5...then I repeated with more sources, and you conceded more. Then after you realized you changed your position over and over, you went for damage control and went back and stated Eritrea only has 1 again. Now you're saying Eritrea may have 10, which is odd because I never specifically stated how much SU-27s Eritrea has. Seems like you randomly put a number out of thin air, then use vague psychic like cold readings of "seems to be", "maybe", "perhaps" estimation to wiggle out of it once I slam you with credible references.
Btw, it didn't take Eritrean Jet Fighters to win independence, that's the hardy, har, har part of things. Ethiopian military isn't able to beat Ethiopian rebels such as the ONLF, OLF, TPDM, etc, let alone attempt to fight a nation not even your size, but with a military far better trained than yours. I think you're better off trying to convince the Egyptians on here that their military will loose to Ethiopia than to Eritreans.
But don't respond and derail this thread any further. As you threw a stone and I was just returning it to the rightful owner.

It's virtually impossible finding pictures online of Asmara's new developed areas, even though the city has expanded by 1/5th with new housing.
Reason Number 1: everyone takes pictures of the city-center, which is what brings in the tourists and where everyone goes to socialize.
Reason number 2: No one goes to the new developed areas unless they have housing or family there (it's very much out of the way).
But I'll post a few that are posted online already:

1. It's you who derailed this thread by talking about militaries, by talking about securing Eritrea's independence, and by posting false info saying Eritrea has 28 Flankers.
LMBAO
2. Ethiopia has eliminated the ONLF etc. as serious military entities. Of course, you can never stop small groups from carrying out small acts - that's the reality all over the world, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan - but these acts are militarily irrelevant.
3. Again, Eritrea has nowhere close to 28 Flankers. As I said before, for a long time there was only photo evidence of one (1!) Eritrean Flanker. Then there were photos of two (2!). There are some sources that suggest Eritrea may have 9 but that is solely speculation based on the serial numbers chosen. So, as I said above, Eritrea may have flankers in the high single digits but nowhere close to 28.

Eritrea is located in Northeast Africa and is bordered on the northeast and east by the Red Sea. The country is virtually bisected by one of the world's longest mountain ranges, formed by the processes that formed the Great Rift Valley, with fertile lands to the west, descending to desert in the east. Eritrea, at the southern end of the Red Sea, is the home of the fork in the rift. The Dahlak Archipelago and its fishing grounds are situated off the sandy and arid coastline. The land to the south, in the highlands, is slightly drier and cooler.
The Afar Triangle or Danakil Depression of Eritrea is the probable location of a triple junction where three tectonic plates are pulling away from one another: the Arabian Plate, and the two parts of the African Plate (the Nubian and the Somali plate) splitting along the East African Rift Zone (USGS). The highest point of the country, Emba Soira, is located in the center of Eritrea, at 3,018*meters (9,902 ft) above sea level.
The main cities of the country are the capital city of Asmara and the port town of Asseb in the southeast, as well as the towns of Massawa to the east, and Keren to the north.

EriFly June 2nd, 2011, 06:41 AM Sweet! Well idk if you understand Tigrinya but, Merhaba, Inqua Bi dahan Metsa'ha.
Yoniii June 2nd, 2011, 11:46 PM Merhaba (turkish?) is that used a lot?.. I understand the rest. Tigrinya is probably a lot easier to follow when it's written (for Amharic speakers). :)
EriFly June 3rd, 2011, 12:00 AM Well My parents lived in Sudan for a couple of years so i use it but i guess its not really pure Tigrinya but we use it anyways.

Massawa International airport is the largest airport in Eritrea. Asmara International airport will be upgraded and expanded this year. Once construction starts, Eritrean airlines will have to move its base to Massawa International airport, where Nasair Eritrea has its headquarters. The owner of Nasair Eritrea, mr. Nasredin Ibrahim (he's a billionaire), is the one who first petitioned Eritrea's government in building Massawa's international airport.

I dont think those kids live in Asmara, let alone Eritrea... Since when did we have chips? I remember seeing Pringles back in 2010 but it was like 110 Nakfa each.

First rule: don't quote any pictures. Please edit your post.
Second rule: No banter fluff talk, this is the last time I'll respond. For future fluff talk, PM me. This is the only thread about Eritrea that is strictly for pictures.
Lastly, it's a private school - rainbow international school. Eritrea can have the highest number of 4th generation jet fighers in sub-sahara Africa that cost around 25-30 million dollars each but can't afford to import chips? Great logic.

I can't remember if they have chips or not. But if you go to this supermarket going east on Harnet Ave. toward Bahti Meskerem stadium, you will find a lot of American products. They sold all kinds of cereal brands, liquors, snickers, twix, etc. It was pricey though. As you can tell from the sign they sell imports. Those kids are likely not Asmarinos, but it's not because of the chips.

The following pictures are concept models and blueprints of how some of Eritrea's future construction projects may look like. These images below, which are still images taken from Eri-TV, are currently being passed around by the government of Eritrea, as likely future development projects for the cities of Asmara, Keren, Massawa and Assab. These blueprint concepts show a wide diversity of skyscrapers, tourist resorts and 5 star hotels.
It must be noted that the government of Eritrea is in talks with a Qatari construction firm of EDESSA to build a new 5-star hotel building in Asmara. In addition to this, EDESSA construction company has been awarded to restore Massawa Island's historic buildings and modernize its facilities.

Eritrea Future Developments (country in africa)
IN THE PHILIPPINES
^^^^^^^^^^
http://www.circuloverde.com.ph/images/5.jpg (http://www.circuloverde.com.ph/images/5.jpg)
MANILA, Philippines - The developer of Greenhills Shopping Center and Tiendesitas said it will build a bridge that would connect its residential-commercial project along Calle Industria to Pasig City, offering an alternative route so motorists can avoid much of the traffic-congested parts of C5.
Ortigas & Co. Ltd. Partnership (OCLP) said it went back to the drawing board after it purchased some property adjacent to its Circulo Verde development. This allowed the company to transfer the main road dissecting the project to its perimeter and lead to a bridge connecting it to Pasig City.
Joey F. Santos, OCLP deputy chief operating officer, said the company earmarked P200 million to build the 137-meter suspended steel bridge. Construction will start in June this year and is expected to finish by the second quarter of 2013.
Motorists, except those driving trucks and other similar heavy vehicles, can take Calle Industria then the perimeter road from C5 to cross the river to get to Pasig City proper.
“It is the second bridge that directly connects Quezon City with Pasig and it is privately funded,” Santos said.
Residents of Circulo Verde will have their own private road from Calle Industria to the bridge.
OCLP is spending P15 billion to develop the 12-hectare Circulo Verde and is now completing two residential buildings, Majorca and Circulo Verde Garden Homes, to be turned over to buyers later this year.
Other residential buildings such as Ibiza, Seville and Leida will be turned over by 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively.
The property developer said it would devote 70 percent of Circulo Verde to open space, comprising a stand-alone retail center instead of incorporating these in the first few floors of residential buildings.
The retail component, which will cost P300 million to develop, will have 10,000 square meters to accommodate supermarkets like Rustan's, cafes, lifestyle stores, convenience stores, and medical clinics.
Earlier, OCLP said it expects sales to double to P4 billion from P2 billion in 2012.

Asmara is the world's safest city (http://www.madote.com/2010/11/worlds-safest-city-is-asmara.html), crime in Asmara is almost unheard of. People leave their car doors, bikes and homes unlocked. Thousands of Europeans live in Eritrea, particularly in the capital. Eritrea has a thriving tourism industry. If I'm sounding like a robot right about now, it's because I've dealt with one too many folks on here who Google something quickly about Eritrea and come back repeating the same inaccurate verbatim.
Tourist Reviews of Eritrea
