Dhaka is known as the city of mosques, but recently it is becoming a city of shopping malls. I am posting a few pics of some popular malls in Dhaka. There are about few dozens of other malls under construction. I will post those pictures after the constructions are completed. Enjoy.

Excellent pictures Tmac .. especiallt the Basundhara mall looks quite amazing. However the interior pictre of the rifles city mall is not of that particular mall. It is an interior shot of Wafi shopping mall in Dubai. Of course i could be mistaken ... however i wold be very surprised if there is a completely identical mall in Dhaka aswell !!

Why thank you, Care to make yourself understood? :D Somewhat "awkwardly" you seem shocked that there are no Hindu temples in Bangladesh (if really there aren't any). Sri Sri Praveen Togadia in disguise....:D

Thank you for your kind reference w.r.t my disguise! BTW, more than the need to make me "understood"; it should be your sincere effort to make your coverup providing, look more credible. You are perfectly entitled to your Dhimmitude, no arguments there. Much as I am entitled, not to suffer from the Stockholm syndrome.

I am sorry if I have caused any "intentional" hurt to your guilt free conscience. :)

Malaysia Dunham-Bush Unit Gets MYR62.7M Bangladesh Job
KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--Malaysia's Dunham-Bush (M) Bhd. (9164.KU) Friday said its wholly-owned unit Dunham-Bush Industries Sdn. Bhd., has won a contract to install a ventilation system for a shopping mall in Bangladesh.

The 18-month contract, worth MYR62.7 million, was awarded to Dunham-Bush Industries by Bangladesh-based Jamuna Builders Ltd.

The Jamuna Complex, located in Dhaka, is a shopping and commercial center with a total floor area of about 4.2 million square feet and has three levels of basement car parks which provide 2,800 parking bays, Dunham-Bush said in a brief statement.

"The contract will progressively contribute to the earnings of the Dunham-Bush group," the company added.

@ CosmoManila -
not to give you the wrong impression of Dhaka - obviously these pics represent the nicer aspects of the city. There is plenty of poverty in Dhaka. However the pics should tell you that people there are not just sitting around being poor, but working their way progressively out of 3 centuries of poverty. Bashundhara City was just completed as the first big modern "mall" but others will come in good time. This does not mean that dhaka does not have other shopping places - there are plenty of older markets and bazars. They may not be so nice and shiny but they serve their role quite well.

most of these are relatively small shopping complexes. Bashundhara City is the biggest mall in Dhaka, it's also the biggest mall in South Asia. Jamuna Future Park will be even bigger than Bashundhara City once completed.

you are right. In big malls you are just another customer. In small places like these you are treated more than just a customer.

Yes I think so as well. After all, the place belongs to a paramilitary organisation and I think it is not allowed to take photographs inside any military zones, pity really, army, navy & air force bases are so beautiful and you can't capture them in a snapshot. But I guess we could post pictures from their official sites. Thats not restricted I guess.

Thanks for the compliment. You know, Bangladesh has actually had significant development but the frustration of most people is because they think abroad is some kind of heaven where all dreams come true. They fail to recognize the potential of there own country. Lets all be hopeful and optimistic and look forward into building a better, stronger Bangladesh.

What sorts of goods and services are available in these new malls? Are they comparable to malls in North America and Europe? Are the labels and brand exclusively Bangladeshi, exclusively from abroad, or a mix of the two? More specifically, from where abroad if so? Pacific Asia? NA? Europe? All of the above?

Thanks for the compliment. You know, Bangladesh has actually had significant development but the frustration of most people is because they think abroad is some kind of heaven where all dreams come true. They fail to recognize the potential of there own country. Lets all be hopeful and optimistic and look forward into building a better, stronger Bangladesh.

I totally agree with you Dhakaiya. Bangladesh could be the next heaven, if we keep up our good work

They are pretty similar to North American malls with food courts, dominance of clothing stores, and a mix of tech stores, shoe stores and others. And most of the stores are Bangladeshi though they have brands from pretty much all over the world. Also there are some foreig chains mostly from North America and Europe. The main difference between these malls and North American or Midde Eastern malls is that NA malls tend to be horizontal with maybe two or three floors but very long ahlsl while the malls in Bangladesh tend be vertical with 6 - 8 floors but shorter floorspace on each floor.

Here is a report on the status of Jamuna future park. The report says that 90% of the construction works have been completed. It will be the largest shopping complex in Asia. The report gave a detail account of different features of the project.

By the way, the newspaper is owned by the owner of the project!

3000 shops
parking for 5000 cars
114 escalators
26 elevators

I know Dhakaiya, but i dont think Jamuna Group would put such a big project on hold if it's chairman gets arrested, but if something illegal is found about this very project, then it may be a totally different story. So far,no sign of that.

When I first read that they were going to build a minaret for Baitul Mukarram, I was worried that it would interfere with the unique architecture of the mosque. Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case, and I am looking forward to its completion. Should be finished soon, I imagine.

A city is best known by its shopping centres and markets. Dhaka has gradually turned into a modern mega city during the two last decades. Traditionally Dhaka is famous for its fabrics since time immemorial. Folkloric cotton fabrics and woven garments still attract young and old, equally. March being a bit warm, but pleasant weather is congenial to roam around. You will find beautiful bright sun and lots of wind. It will be pleasure to go around the market places before noon and of course in the afternoon.

While at Dhaka it would be almost a sin not to go around and visit the shopping areas. You do not have to make a schedule to visit them, just take an hour or two breaks from your busy time and take a cab or jump on a rickshaw, if you can and just take a trip into some of these places. There are wide varieties of shops, small and large, some of them are well-decorated and of course airconditioned. You will find local botique too. These are at Gulshan, Banani, Uttara and some are at Dhanmandi and Mispur...Details (http://www.dhakacalling.com/shopping.php)...

Strongly agree, very poor utilization of such a prime land. Along with the similar one in Gulshan 1, both of these look poor with shining sleek new malls coming up every month around them.

With regard to the logo, I find it authentic with no computer modification! but as to the franchise, that's another story if it is really the Chili's Grill and Bar. Its just another "Chili" but not Grill and Bar.

The signage and haphazard ad-postings are an eyesore.

I wish that the city corporation would come up with some sort of decency-rules, uniformity requirements and limits on the size of billboards and signage. Like that applied in developed countries.

You can hardly see the windows for some of these billboards!

Asia's 'biggest' mall in Dhaka

http://www.thedailystar.net/photos/2008-04-10__b101.jpg
The interior view of under construction Jamuna Future Park, a giant shopping mall in Dhaka (left)

The giant glass and steel arch hangs like an upturned smile above the concrete and scaffolding, each day welcoming hundreds of construction workers and prospective store holders into the cavern like atrium of what is claimed will be Asia's biggest shopping centre.

No, this monster of a building is not on some retail park on the outskirts of Shanghai, or Kuala Lumpur, but in Dhaka, Bangladesh. And whether or not the claim of its Asian predominance is true, the sheer scale of 'Jamuna Future Park' cannot be questioned.

Standing in the entrance of the nine story building with sunlight cutting down through the glass ceiling, Future Park's designer AJM Alamgir can roll off a list of staggering figures as testimony to its scale.

So far more than 5.5 million bricks, 40,000 tones of steel, 2 million bags of cement and 3.6 million cubic feet of sand have been consumed in its construction. On average 1,200 workers are busy on the site each day and when completed there will be 4.5 million square feet of shopping, entertainment facilities and offices.

It is the largest ever private infrastructure venture, and will be three times the size of Bashundhara City, the country's current number one shopping mall, according to the Jamuna Group.

With space for more than 4,300 shops, a food court, children's theme park, cinema halls, an exhibition centre and offices the centre's total yearly turnover will be around TK16,000 crore, according to Nurul Islam Babul, chairman of Jamuna Group.

“It’s not only the biggest in the country, I must claim that it is the biggest ever shopping mall project in South Asia,” said Babul.

But getting it built has not been easy. Work started on the site in 2001, but political disputes delayed development. In February 2007 Babul was seized and sent to Dhaka Central jail, accused under the emergency power rules of anti-state activities and land grabbing. He was released on bail in December and is unwilling to comment on the accusations or the reasons for the project's delay.

At present around 80 percent of work has been completed and the aim is to open the first phase of the complex by mid 2009 with 140 escalators and 42 lifts still needing to be installed. A second phase involving the construction of a hotel and hospital will come later.

But will there really be enough customers to keep the 4,300 shops going?

Babul has no doubt. “When I dreamed of such a big venture, I considered a place which must be surrounded by areas that would be able to provide customers for Future Park.. I think this is the right spot.”

The centre is well located for most of the more affluent parts of the city, Gulshan, Baridhara, Uttara, DOHS, and Banani, he said, adding that “Its population density will encourage the prospective shoppers to become a part of the country's biggest business centre.”

The centre will have parking spaces for 5,000 cars and is surrounded by a 26 feet ringroad in order to allow customers to bring their own vehicles.

Babul also insisted that Future Park, with its entertainment focus ranging from restaurants to karaoke and bowling lanes to swimming pools, would attract non-shoppers.

“The park should not be considered a mall only, it's a city where you can find whatever you want for passing a day time.”

One common question asked is about power supply, but Babul said power supply is not a problem. “We will supply uninterrupted power to the mall by setting a 40MW private power plant inside the area.”

Bangladeshi engineers have already proved their skills by developing huge projects around the world. For example, everyone can recollect the name of Fazlur Khan, a Bangladeshi structure engineer who designed the Sears Tower in Chicago.

But here in Bangladesh it still comes as a surprise to many that a local engineer, such as AJM Alamgir is behind such a huge project as Future Park. Indeed Alamgir is involved in several of the major developments going on in and around Dhaka at the moment such as the Unous Tower at Motijhil, Silver Tower at Gulshan, and North Tower at Uttara.

Yet sometimes it is difficult to remain engaged in such a long running project as Future Park. “Sometimes I feel a little bored. But when I realize this project is likely to be part of history, any reluctance I have turns into enthusiasm,” he said.

It's a feeling echoed by Jamuna Group's Babul. “I will not be alive forever, but the 18,000 tones of concrete used in the Jamuna Future Park will make me immortal,” he said smiling.

Just hope it doesn't end up like Bashundhara City and that the stores are of better quality. We need foreign retailers setting up shop, especially because this is going to be closer to the Gulshan/Banani/Baridhara area, not to mention the crowd at Bashundhara.

If the info on wikipedia is right, then its gonna be the 5th biggest in Asia and 10th biggest in the world when completed. This will be 4.5 million sq feet, and as far as I know, the Mall of America is prolly 4.2 million sq.So its huge for sure.

That may be the case, however the lists on Wikipedia and elsewhere are based on "retail" space. The 4.5 mil for JFP includes offices and may also be counting the public corridors etc so I am not sure that it all counts. But we should not be so obsessed with size anyway.

What SAS has said is important...the stores need to be better. The architecture of public spaces at Bashundhara City is excellent but the stores lack character and the interior decoration is still pretty bland. Even shops at malls here in this medium sized American town have much nicer ambience than BC. JFP either needs to hire decorators from abroad to train those in BD or to invite foreign chains to set up shop so local counterparts can learn by osmosis.

I totally agree with that....the stores need to improve
