monsoon music magic

MUSIC SHOWERS: Chennai based Carnatic vocalist Shreyas Narayanan singing at a concert organised by Thyagabrahma Sabha at Sahitya Academy yesterday.
By Aasish Venugopal

MUSIC aficionados of Thrissur were quite anxious that the monsoon be a cause for setting down the pace of music hub in the town. But an event arranged as a revival of an age-old music association proved it'll not be.

Shreyas Narayanan, a Carnatic vocalist from Chennai extended a two and a half hour vocal concert on Monday on behalf of Sree Thyagabrahma Sabha at Sahithya Academy auditorium. On the accompaniments, the supports were provided by Trivandrum Sampath on violin, Poovalur Srinivasan on mridangam and Vellatanjur Sreejith on ghatom. He opened his recital with an adi tala varnam in the raga begada with a short Alapana.

He moved on to Kharaharapriya with the kriti Ganapathiye karunanidhiye in adi tala itself. Next came, the oft-repeated Amba vani nannu of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar in the raga Kiravani (Kirvani in Hindusthani genre and harmonic minor scale in western).

This was catered too with a short alapana which explored all the three sthayis (octaves). Muruga Thirumalmaruga Shanmukha treated with the raga harikambhoji served yet another great experience as he provided a niraval and Kalpanaswara (Kalpanaswaram is raga improvisation within a specific tala in which the musician improvises in the Indian music solfege - sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, ni after completing a composition) at the lyric Karunai kadale... A Sanskrit composition of Muthuswami Dikshitar Hiranmayim Lakshmim Bhajamiwas neatly dealt with an elaborate alapana of raga lalitha which evoked a meditative mood. The meaningful excerpt from the charanam sangeetha vadhya... was chosen for niraval as usual, with both first and second degree of speed followed by kalpanaswaras in doublets. Rama nine nanu of Thyagaraja in the raga huseni set in adi tala was rendered in a fast pace.

The pièce de résistance for the evening was Thyagaraja's Ethavunnara in Kalyani, tala of which is a double mode reckoning of adi tala (two kala). As it is inevitable, there was a broad delineation of the raga passing through all the three octaves with ease. Niraval was fixed at Sree Garuda... in two degrees of speed and the swaras in the first degree, triplets and doublets.

Srinivasan and Sreejith showcased an excellent taniavaratana that each phrases of srinivasan were awfully reproduced by Sreejith. Sampath exhibited a consummate artistry in following the rendition and dialogues.

Compositions that were added to Thukkadas were Kanakasabhai thirunatanam in surutti, pandarivara sakhya panduranga in misra mand; and shreyas concluded the recital with a composition of Purandaradasar, Narajanma bandhaga in the raga Madhuvanthi.

copa America fever in the city

Joy wearing Brazil jersey sells vegetables in the Sakthan market >>
By Vishnu Prasad

FOOTBALL jerseys are once again in style in Thrissur as the Copa America featuring the best of Latin American football kicks off in Argentina today.

Enthusiasm, however, has been dampened by the fact the tournament will not be telecast in the country by any channel.

Fans of Brazil and Argentina in the district, most of them have not had an opportunity to banter in recent years, are hoping for a repeat of the previous edition's final which featured the two heavyweights.

Argentina fans are now hoping to avenge the defeat they suffered on that day.

Joy, a vegetable vendor at the Sakthan market, wears his Brazil jersey these days.

"We are extremely confident of retaining the crown. There will be no bigger achievement than beating Argentina in their country," he said.

When asked about the preparations going on in the opposite camp at the market, he chose to take some friendly jabs.

"I do not think they've organised their jerseys and flags yet. They are usually very slow at this," he said.

Faisal, an Argentina fan from Ayyanthole, however disagrees.

"We have the best team in the world, with the best player in the world. No team which has Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero can be beaten easily," Faisal said.

He added that playing at home meant Argentina was almost certain to win the crown.

Unlike other editions of the tournament, there are other teams which are followed fervently. For instance, Uruguay's performance in the recent World Cup has won them many admirers.

"Diego Forlan won the Golden Ball award at the World Cup. I am supporting Uruguay as he is playing," said Gautam, an IT professional from Chembukkavu.

Manchester United's Mexican wonder kid Javier Hernandez has also inspired a few to back Mexico in the tournament.

TV channels though are yet to buy into this football fiesta. Copa America has found no takers for broadcast and the entire country will miss out on the games.

However, a few tech-savvy people in the city are planning to watch the tournament. "We will watch the games online through live online streams," said Vikas, an engineering student. He added that he has been watching India-West Indies series using this method.

"Anyone with a relatively fast broadband connection can use this method to watch the matches. It will not be too difficult to watch all the matches of your favourite team online," he added.

Voice of Akashavani Thrissur

M Thankamani

THE LISTENERS of Akashavani have been familiar with the voice of Thankamani for the last four decades.

M Thankamani, daughter of the renowned social reformer and writer of yesteryear Mullamanagalathu Raman Bhattathiripad, is now leading a retired life at Chembukkavu. But she hates to rest and often thinks of the days in which she was busy acting, dubbing and presentation of programmes.

She joined Kozhikode Akashavani in 1964. But she had to wait nine years to get a permanent appointment in Akashavani. Meanwhile, she was transferred to the Thrissur station, which had started independent broadcast during that period. She acted in many dramas such as Indulekha and Suryakanthiye snehicha penkutty.

Recalling those days Thanakamani says, "In olden times, we had paid much attention to the pronounciation of words".

Thankamani, who proved her mettle as a dubbing artist, won the state film award in 2001 for the film Theerthadanam. Her last film is Shaji N Karun's Kuttisrank. The prominent actors for whom Thankamani dubbed were Sharada (Rappakal), Suhasini (Vanaprastham), Nirmala (Oru Cherupunchiri), Aswathy (Swom), Archana (Piravi) and Mini Nair (Desadanam, Niyogam).

But the most unforgettable moment in her life is the dubbing for Kasturba played by Rohini Hattangadi in the Malayalam version of the famous film Gandhi.

In theatre, she worked with great personalities like PJ Antony, Balan K Nair and MS Namboothiri. As a presenter and drama artist at the All India Radio (AIR), Thakamani had bagged the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy award.

She also got the 'Best Tele film presenter' award instituted by Doordarshan. It was the telefilm based on the life Gandhian cum Freedom Fighter Late Padmashri Kumaran Nair that brought the honour to her. She won national awards of Akashavani for the programmes Mounam Meettum Thampuru, Sooryayanam and Karmanyevadhikarasthe in 1982,1992 and 1994 respecitively.

Born and brought up in a Nambudiri family at Shoranur, Thankamani had her schooling at Chittur Govt Victoria Girls High School. Her ambition was to become a Hindi teacher and she completed Hindi Praveen course which was equal to BA. But she was fated to become an announcer and was quite happy in the world of sounds.

"When I accept a character, I'll mentally be with that", says Thankamani, who is eagerly waiting for characters.

Before the advent of supermarkets and the grocery shops round the corners, Thrissur's one-stop shop for pulses, rice, sugar, chilly, jaggery, and such, was Nayarangadi and Ariyangadi.

Though Reliance Fresh and City Super market has sine blossomed, the rustic old shops still continue to be. And there are people who choose to do their 'purchases' from those very shops despite all the changes that have washed over the city.

Eightynine-year-old A John has been running his shop 'Anchery Lonappan Ouseph & Kakoo' at Nayarangadi for the past 73 years. "My grandfather started it, and I'm carrying it forward. The shop must have been here for at least 85 years," says he. Today his nephew Joseph helps him with his business.

Nayarangadi hasn't changed much, as most other parts of Thrissur have, but John observes quite a few changes.

During his grandfathers' time, goods from Bombay used to reach Vanchikkulam here, via boats from Cochin (Kochi). From there, bullock carts would carry them to the shops. Today lorries crowd the streets of Nayarangadi.

Puzhakkal river polluted by wastes from houses

'Industries not to blame'

It's official. The pollution in Puzhakkal river is due to local waste dumping. And the pollution is limited to "just one stretch of the river" and "not caused by industrial discharges."

Kerala State Pollution Control Board chairman K Sajeevan told City Journal that "during our inspection, we found that wastes/effluents from the nearby industries were not allowed to flow into the river". In other words, the polluted stretch owed its dubious status to waste dumping by the locals.

The latest Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data had revealed that the Puzhakkal river is one of the 150 most polluted in the country. The board prepared its latest report on polluted river stretches in India after monitoring water quality under its National Water Quality Monitoring Programme (NWMP).

"It was we who gave the reports on polluted rivers in Kerala to the CPCB for preparing the data. Just one stretch of Puzhakkal river was found polluted. A major part of the river is not affected yet,'' he said.

"That one stretch is polluted maybe because local people dump waste there. We didn't find any industrial waste in the polluted stretch, not only garbage from houses, meat leftovers, drainage wastes and so on," Sajeevan said.

He added that the board would soon propose to the district collector and the district pollution control board to take remedial measures to prevent waste dumping into the river by the public.source (http://www.cityjournal.in/Newspaper/20111126/Metro/Metro_16.html)

"If no one responds to your call, then go your own way alone" !!!

Sir ,I wish to salute you for your initiative and contribution here.

You came up with such an excellent idea of starting this thread to include & cover the social life of people in Thrissur, and you invited others....
but (except for one other post), no one really responded and you have been going all alone. Great. Appreciate very much for going all alone and contributing about 27 posts here.

I wish to join you...and share with you & hope the forum will appeal to more and we can share with a larger no. of people here in Thrissur about social & cultural life.

Being a new comer to this Cultural Capital of Kerala, have not yet found any way to share and interact with locals, thanks to my zero knowledge in Malayalam.

I hope this is a begining of giving me possibilities to interact & share and grow in my cultural, literary & social life in Thrissur.

Regards to all in Thrissur.

^^Thanks Universal and Frank for your support. I love my city, Thrissur and I want to share our city's life to the people. In our modern life, life style bears an important role. Dressing patterns, eateries , entertainment activities etc include in this section. There are a lot of things , which are not known to people of other places. They know only the Thrissur pooram festival or some other things. Thrissur has wide variety of cultures , good hotels, good academic institutions and several entertainment functions. So I want to bring all these things ,ie social life to this thread. There is already thread, for city development activities. But this thread aims to focus the life style that thrissurkar follows.

City has the 'patent' to Thattil Kutty Dosa!

Chefs preparing dosa at the corporation's Kudumbasree unit, Health & Taste Restaurant, at West Fort. Dosa, chammanthi, chatni and tapioca puzhukku served on a plate.
By Dhanya Ezhuthachan

Malayalees do not need introduction for Thattil Kutty Dosa. The dosa became famous with the super hit movie, Salt n' Pepper. But, only few know that the dosa originated almost three years ago in the Thrissur corporation's Kudumbasree unit, Health & Taste Restaurant, at West Fort. The dosa is a perennial favourite of Thrissurites who visit the restaurant.

The restaurant is supported by Adhebha Institute of Food Research and Hospitality Management (AIFRHM) in Thrissur. Cooking in the restaurant is done by six women who are Kudumbasree members but the recipes are given by AIFRHM CEO Ajayakumar.

The lady 'chefs' - Geetha, Sindhu, Sheri, Nirmala, Rajani and Sathi - say that the restaurant has been offering Thattil Kutty Dosa for the past two and a half years. The dosa recipe was also given by their cooking guru Ajayakumar. Kudumbasree and Catering Consortium district chairperson Aleemu Usman is always at hand to guide the team.

"Last year, we attended food melas at Thiruvananthapuram and a few other districts. We presented Thattil Kutty Dosa then. We think the Salt n Pepper team got the recipe from there," says Aleemu.

The dosa, priced at Rs 25, is served with tapioca puzhukku, chatni, sambar and chammanthi. The dosa is small in size and thicker than ordinary dosas and the chatni ingredients are different; so is the side dish (tapioca puzhukku).

Says Geetha, "There is rush for the dosa during evening and morning. Especially after the release of the movie, it has become more popular and people come here just to eat that. Government officers and students are the loyal fans of the dosa. And many of them take parcels of the dosa for their family."

The restaurant operates from 7am to 7.30pm. Apart from Thattil Kutty Dosa, the other special dosas on its menu are: Onion roast, onion oothapam, rava dosa, egg dosa, kappa dosa and Chettinadan dosa.

Beauty with brains

She is not just another beautician. When it comes to bridal make-up, she is the last name in South India. In an interview, Nimmi Sheriff, director of La Femme Beauty Clinic in Thrissur, spoke to City Journal about her journey and aspirations. Excerpts:

Tell us something about yourself.

I hail from Kodungalloor. My husband, Mohammed Sheriff, is an engineer and my daughter Nilofer is a doctor. My father, Abdul Khader, is an ex-MLA and my grandfather, Manapad Kunjumohamed Haji, was a philanthropist. I belong to the family which founded the Muslim Education Society (MES).

Coming from such a prominent family with a Muslim background, how did you find your ground

in business?

I belonged to a very orthodox family. In fact, my mother still feels I work too hard. I got married at the age of 19 when I was doing my degree. It was my husband who guided me to pursue my interest in make-up and beauty. Business was not initially in the plans, it was in the destiny.

La Femme- when was the

foundation stone laid?

La Femme in Thrissur was initially set up in 1987. This was at MG Road. The present centre was set up only in 1993.

You have done various courses in make-up and hair cutting.

When did you find time for

all that?

Yes. I have done various courses in London, Singapore, Germany and also Delhi. I was able to do all these courses only because of my family support. Even when my daughter was a little girl, I was allowed to go abroad for my courses. Without their support, I would not make it this far.

What is the key to

your success?

I am always a student- even now. I work whenever I travel so that I can learn techniques which are practised by beauticians across the world. I have worked in Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Delhi, Bangalore, Kochi, Dubai, Singapore and London. Every experience has helped me in a different way and has contributed to my work.

After working in so many countries, what is it that you find different

in India?

Indians lack professionalism! I think that is the only reason we are still a developing country. We lack professionalism in every field, be it in our front office, customer service or make-up. In foreign countries, people follow trends but here we take care of client needs, so in terms of beauty clinics I think the work is better here in India.

You are most known for your

bridal make-up. Why is that?

I enjoy working with brides. Each bride is different with different skin and different expectations on her special day. It really is a challenge. I have enjoyed working with them and so it has become my forte. Even in my initial days, I have worked with Arab brides - this was a big encouragement for me since they loved my work.

You have been awarded the best women entrepreneur awards by the Chamber of Commerce and recently by John Mathai College. What do you have to say

about that?

I am grateful. A lot of hard work has been put in and it has been recognised. My employees have a lot of contribution-they are my strength. My customers who have believed in me cannot be forgotten.

Future plans?

My daughter is doing her course in cosmetic dermatology. She is going to take over La Femme and provide our customers with complete solutions for all their beauty concerns.

Welcoming 2012

Brilliant streaks of light, a blaze of colour and the sound of firecrackers- Thrissur welcomed the New Year with spectacular fireworks and celebrations as the curtain came down on 2011.

When the clock struck 12, the city was lit up by shimmering fireworks. Shrieks and shouts of "Happy New Year" rent the air, punctuated by the cacophony of blaring horns. Friends and strangers greeted each other warmly as the party mood shifted into a higher gear in clubs and

hotels.

Shops were full of people looking for new clothes for the night of festivities. "It's nice to dress up afresh to start the year," said Arun, 22, from Koorkkenchery.

Clubs, resident associations and hotels were all in the party swing from early evening. Omana M, a resident at a Skyline apartment, said, "We have more than 70 families participating and programmes have been lined up for the entire night. We plan to enter the New Year together."

For some, it was not just a night of pomp and show. Visiting shrines and temples, offering their first prayers for the year was their way of celebration.

"For me, it's a double treat. Lourde Cathedral, my church, is also celebrating its festivities apart from the New Year. The entire area has joined the festivities, it's a great feeling," said Thomas Inasu, from East Fort.

The world bids farewell to a tough year rocked by economic turmoil and natural disasters, and rang in 2012 in the hope of making a fresh start. Shine Govind was traveling abroad for the first time yesterday.

He said, "I am looking forward to a good future, a good job with a better pay and hoping that my whole family will join me soon in the UK."

Hope was on everyone's lips. Happy New Year!

Night of honour for King of Melody

MK Arjunan
Melody King MK Arjunan Master will be honoured by Bharathan Smruthivedi on Saturday, at Regional theatre's Bharath Murali open air auditorium.

Musician V Dhakshinamoorthy will inaugurate the programme, to be presided over by the Bharathan Smruty chairman TA Sundar Menon.

"Kastoori Manakkunnallo Katte ", a music feast will be organised in association with the function. MP Surendran, P Jayachandran, Mayor IP Paul, Satyan Anthikkad, John Paul, Mala Aravindan, Vidhyadharan Master, director Jayaraj and Sidharth Bharath will join in the festivity.

MK Arjunan Master, well-known music composer of Mollywood, lost his father at a young age. The burden of a big family fell on his mother Parvathi. Unable to provide for all her children, she sent Arjunan and his brother Prabhakaran to Jeevakarunyananda Ashram in Palani.

It was in the Ashram that Arjunan got his first lessons in music. After school, Arjunan would join the other children in singing bhajans in the evenings.

Noticing a special talent in the young boy, the head of the ashram decided to give him music lessons. For the next few years Arjunan learnt music under Kumarayya Pillai.

Composing music was another turn in Arjunan's life, after attempting few amateur plays, music composing grew as a serious hobby to him. Arjunan was soon a sought after by almost every amateur troupe.

He then graduated to the professional stage and was soon associated with top names like Changanassery Geetha, People's Theatre, Kalidasa Kalakendram, Desabhimani Theatres, Alleppey Theatres and KPAC.

Arjunan Master went on to compose around 800 songs for 300 plays. This association with music grew into an intimate bond, which he maintains even today.

Since his debut in cinema in 1968, there was no looking back for this sensitive music director. At a time when stalwarts like K Raghavan, G Devarajan and MS Baburaj ruled the roost, Arjunan managed to break into the industry and establish an identity of his own.

During a career spanning 50 years in film field, Arjunan Master has scored music for more than 500 songs in over 218 Malayalam films.

Panamkuttichira residents fume over waste-dumping

CPI Ollur Mandalam Committee members taking out a rally against the corporation's waste-dumping at Panamkuttichira yesterday.
By Sijo Joseph

THE People of Panamkuttichira near Ollur have come to the fore in protest against the corporation's decision to resume dumping of waste from yesterday.

The corporation took the decision at a meeting held on Thursday.

The corporation stopped dumping of waste at Panamkuttichira on December 26 after the waste there caught fire on Christmas day morning.

Following protests by the residents, Mayor IP Paul cancelled dumping of waste temporarily. They say the land is not reserved for dumping waste, it is actually a grave yard.

Communist Party of India Ollur Mandalam Committee secretary Johnson T Thomas and Panamkuttichira councillor John Kannirathingal said they will not allow the corporation to dump waste. Later, CPI activists took out a march to the Ollur centre from Panamkuttichira.

The councillor said the meeting held on Thursday was a failure for out of 106 families, only 12 representatives were present.

"The corporation has taken the decision to resume waste-dumping for just eight units or houses," he told City Journal.

A resident, Thomas Antony, said: "When the corporation began to use the land for dumping wate, they promised to deconstruct the waste or use sand over the waste. Due to the waste heaps, water in the nearby wells and pond was polluted."

The mayor said a meeting is likely to be held on Monday by Ollur MLA MP Vincent and him and the waste dumping will stop till then.

"No one can stop dumping waste permanently at Panamkuttichira as waste heaps are increasing on roadsides.

"We can prevent waste coming from outside the Ollur division and can appoint a security guard at the spot," he said.

The mayor denied the claim that the land is a graveyard.

Benny makes sense with light and sound at Fest

Benny Neelankavil, managing director, Kerala Light and Sound
By Sijo Joseph

Kerala Light and Sound is a name Thrissur (or probably the state itself) may find it difficult to forget whenever youth festivals arrive. The unit is all set to prove their mettle in the upcoming festival stages. The decision of the government to give the tender to the Kerala Light and Sound underlines the hard work they put in at the festivals.

Around 40 staffs are on reserve and ready to act.

Light and Sound managing director Benny Neelankavil said around 40 generators, including three at the main stage, are needed for meeting the required power at 17 stages, schools those were reserved for students stay and aquatic complex where food will be reserved.

The road from the main stage, Corporation stadium to aquatic complex, where food is arranged will be illumined with tubes. He said the number of total tube lights or the wire that they have to be used cannot be estimated.

Benny Neelankavil said, they were yet to begin the works as the works on the panthal was yet to conclude. The works of the panthal was almost over and they might start their work any time, he hastened to add.

Benny had assisted his father at the previous youth festival that was held on 2004 and 1998. It was the first time he was facing such a large attempt without anyone's support. "Until the last fest, I had the support of my father but he is not around anymore. I have his (unseen) motivation that gives me confidence. That will do wonders," he told City Journal.

Kerala Sound and Light was established in 1956 by NK Devassy and the unit ran about 26 years under his guidance. "Now we are taking assignments from all over South India. After the art fest of 2004, AK Antony himself presented a memento to my father for being the best sound system," he added.

The upcoming youth fest will be a memorable one for a long time to come, as long as the effect of light of sound is concerned, he promises.
Kerala Light and Sound is one of the most eminent group in the light and sound field.

Ramachandran Chengarath, a Thrissurite, is proud to say that he is decorating the main stage for the school youth festival at Corporation Stadium. It is not the first time he is decorating and arranging the stage. He made the main entrance and the main stage of the state school youth festival 2004 held in Thrissur.

He said that in 2004, he made the main entrance with the cut-outs of 15 elephants. Ramachandran has been in the field for 30 years. He owns an event management office, AARCEE Arts & Sounds, near Thiruvambady Temple.

This time, he has decided to do something different showing the culture of Thrissur. He has arranged a huge logo to be placed in the centre of the main stage. The cut-outs of Mohiniyattam performance will be fixed on two pillars of 8ft. The pillars and cut-outs are made of fiber.

The main stage will be decorated with 'nettipattam', 'aalavattam', and 'venjamaram'. Ramachandran is making banners for the 17 stages. A team of eight members have been working for the last two weeks.

He has done the stage for the Chembai Sangeetholsavam. Ramachandran represents the Thrissur district every year in the programme held by the tourism department in Thiruvananthapura

Hotels, canteens ready with delicious dishes

As the city is prepared for Asia's biggest youth festival, hotels near the venue make their own ways to welcome guest artistes. The Town Hall canteen plans to work for 24 hours during the festival with full of mouth-watering snacks. They will serve snacks along with different types of biriyanies.

The canteen will reserve food for more than 400 people. They said they will not exploit the situation, but promised to sell food at reasonable rates with a slogan 'Adhithi devo bhava.'

Every hotel and roadside eateries are expecting brisk business in the week ahead though the authorities have made all arrangements for providing food to participants. Most of the hotel menus are ready with delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, including prawns. Shortage of employees is a great challenge to the hotels now as employees are not willing to work overtime.

Below: The audience at the inauguration function.
IT WAS a cultural extravaganza that Thrissurites would never forget. A potpourri of cultural art forms was showcased at the 52nd State Art Festival's cultural procession, which took off from Student's Corner in the city yesterday.

The gala had slices of art forms from outside the country, including Japanese Kimona.

Thrissur Inspector General of Police S Gopinath flagged off the rally. Educational Minister Abdu Rabb, Minister for Corporation CN Balakrishan, Mayor IP Paul, MLAs and politicians joined the procession. Students from schools round state began flocking Swaraj Round from 3.00pm. Vehicles normally plying via round were diverted through elsewhere.

In the sweltering heat, students were found vending their way towards the main venue dancing and singing. While some of the school had a well-disciplined band set, others had tigers spread on the road stepping with the rhythmic drum beat.

NCC and student police were seen marching in the procession. A few groups presented Dandiya to the delight of the many Thrissurites; many of whom have seen the art form only on the screen.

Kathakali, Kolkali, Opana, Parijamutu, Kummatikali, Margamkali followed. Some schools even had eructed tableau carrying public messages.

The procession reached at Corporation Stadium where the official inauguration of the Festival was done by KJ Yesudas.

When Asia's biggest gala had taken off at the cultural capital of Kerala, Ewa, a Poland native was seen under the tree at Thekinkad maithan clicking frames.

She is visiting India to watch the festival. When asked, she simply uttered just "great", one of the few words she knew in English. But the smile spread across her face said all that she wants to say. She is happy to be here.

Hullabaloo at drama venue

By Sanju Soman

Kozhikode-based Justin and his friend Shine were standing outside Regional Theatre exactly by nine in the morning — the venue is where the high school drama competitions were staged yesterday.

"We started from home a day earlier because there were chances of a hartal. Both of us are extremely fond of drama and didn't want to miss the best ones from all districts," said Justin.

The friends are here for both the higher school and higher secondary drama competitions.

The programmes at Regional Theatre started an hour late and audience was already on the tip of their seats - waiting for the little stars to perform.

"Everything was fine until the curtain rose for the first drama. By then crowd began pouring in slowly. The hall soon proved to be too small for the event in a city known for its theatre lovers," said Shine.

Police and student police cadets were all over the place trying to keep the crowd under control. Media persons and cameras lined through the central passage of the hall were also considered an intervention. "Audience protested and police immediately evacuated all cameramen from the central passage," said the friends.

Even officials say such huge crowd was unexpected.

Sunil, a committee member, said, "We hadn't expected these many people, but being a virtual holiday people are flowing in today."

He said they had to open the balcony area, which was usually closed for the public. "Initially things were a hotchpotch and accommodating everyone seemed to be impossible. We added 200 extra chairs in the balcony hall and even arranged two extra LCD screens at the lobby so that people don't cram into the main hall," said Sunil.

The higher secondary school competition is sure to draw more crowd and we will have to take steps, he said.

Another unfortunate event at the venue was a

report of pick-pocketing. There people at the venue claimed to have lost their purse in the mob.

He has been to India more than four times in the last five years and says each time he comes, the quality of musicians increases. Micheal Shelton, musician, performer, teacher, and adjucator, is now in India as an examiner for Trinity Guildhall School of Music Examination Service, which is an internationally acclaimed certification for musicians.

In the last few days, Micheal has met over 200 teachers, parents and more than 300 students in connection with the examinations which are being held at Father Chakalamattom's Chetana Music Academy.

Says Micheal: "The people here have taught me a lot. Indian music is rich in its improvisations and ragas and it's their honesty and integrity that help in creating good music."

Micheal, who has travelled to over 50 countries worldwide and to over 15 places, including Chennai, Kochi and New Delhi, in India, said, "The students at Chetana have always maintained high standards. The people in Kerala are extremely friendly and have a special way of expressing things through their eyes."

Piano, clarinet and saxophone are Micheal's tools of expressions. "I play the tabla too," he adds, playing a note for confirmation on this table. This great experienced musician says he still has a long way to go.

"Life is a journey and I still have a lot to improve as a musician," he says, travelling helps me learn new cultures and change as a person and I'm surely coming back to God's Own Country.

Is Corpn solely responsible for waste disposal?

By Sanju Soman

It has been two weeks since trash began to pile up in different parts of the city. Kudumbashree workers complain that they are losing out on their jobs. The residents of Lalur and Ollur are firm on their stand that they will not allow anymore garbage to be dumped in their area. The corporation seems to be absolutely unclear on finding a solution.

City Journal spoke to a number of flat owners who are the major sufferers in the bargain.

Anna S,

a Punkunnam resident

We have been instructed by the residents association not to dump waste in the compound. You could see a lot of waste on the Guruvayur road where most of us dispose of our garbage.

Ramachandran S,

from Koorkkencherry

The Kudumbashree workers who used to collect waste from our premises informed us that they will not be coming in the next few days. Now, we have to travel more than 1 km to dump waste in a corporation bin.

Smitha S,

a resident of Sakthan Nagar

In our compound, there are more than 50 families. The waste has been stinking. We don't have land to bury the waste. We are now afraid of epidemics.

Abdul R,

Ayyanthole

Two weeks! The corporation is least bothered. We have no place to dispose of waste. Yesterday, we buried waste in our compound as there was no other option to stop the foul smell.

Krishnan S,

flat owner at Kuriachira

The corporation collects huge amounts from us as tax each year. However, we are not benefitted. They have already approved many flat designs without facilities to dispose of waste. This is ridiculous!
http://www.cityjournal.in/Newspaper/20120205/Metro/Metro_11.html

The corporation is the first culprit and the people who are throwing wastes to the road side and paddy fields are the second. It is corporation's duty to create facilities for dumping the waste. Lalur and Ollur issues are increasing day by day. The corporation fails to find out the solution of the problem. It is their duty to improve the quality of work of Kudumbasree workers. I have heard some of them earns more money from house owners. So some people decided not to accept their service. Similarly it is corporations duty to find out the places of dust bins keeping a distance. In our city, dust bins can not be seen, and the existing dust bins are filled with wastes always.

So the corporation should work hard on this aspect. Another thing is that people should not throw the wastes to the road sides or sides of paddy fields. The corporation has already fixed a fine to the people who are throwing wastes to outside.

It is also better to put the burn the wastes with in the compound. But the plastic and rubber can not be burnt in the housing compounds, since it causes serious deceases.
The corporation should construct the plant for transforming the wastes to other products .

BALAKRISHNAN, a native of Coimbatore, has come all the way to Thrissur from Coimbatore with a passion for culinary arts.
A software engineer, he says that he loves to cook and eat and it was his dream to own a restaurant.
He is now running Flavours Restaurant at City Centre. He says customer satisfaction is a big factor in his success.
According to Balakrishnan, around 60% of his customers are the regulars, mostly families. "As all the restaurants serve Indian, Chinese and Kerala food, we planned something different and focused on sundaes and 'chat' menu," Balakrishnan said.
He says that the people here love to have something hot with the cool stuff. And the customers prefer spicy Bhel Puri, Pani Puri and Masala Puri, he said, adding all have become the favourite of Thrissurites nowadays. People come to the restaurant to have light food and lunch as well.
Balakrishnan claims that there is no other restaurant in Thrissur which serves 'chat' menu. Thrissurites are changing and started having 'chat', pizzas and all........

Quality of audience very high, says Humortal team

http://www.cityjournal.in/Newspaper/20120206/images/DSCI0279.jpg

David Borg and Milan von Chobiak, artistes of the play Humortal, at ITFoK.
Mila von Chobiak and David Borg, artistes of Spanish play Humortal, say they love to come to Thrissur again. It is their first visit to Kerala and the cultural capital has captivated their hearts too. They also want to see Thrissur pooram this year.
Mila Von Chobiak is an Argentinean settled in Catalonia, Spain, 30 years ago. He said he was able to come to Kerala as one of the artistes in the troupe could not turn up for some reasons.
The team has been here for the last one week and he says he visited many places, mainly temples, museum, Anakotta in Guruvayur etc. He says the people here are very hospitable and co-operative. He also learnt a few Malayalam words such as 'namaskaram', 'nandi', some numbers and some songs too.
David, the manager of EFS Theatre Group and one of the artistes, said that he has come to India several times, but never been to Kerala before. According to him, Kerala is the most beautiful place in India. He appreciated the quality of audience here and said that the drama became a success because of their co-operation.
"Our play was something different from others. It is actually a street play and we have been playing this for the last five years," David said. The play will be staged again at the ITFoK on demand from the audience, he added.
Both of them said that they are trying to learn more Malayalam words before leaving the state. The team is going back to Spain on Thursday.

PRESIDENT of Cochin Devaswom Board MCS Menon inaugurated eight days cultural programmes in connection with Shivarathri at Vadakkumnathan Temple at 6pm yesterday. MLA Therambil Ramakrishnan presided over the function.

The inaugural function started with the Sopana Sangeetham by Yadu S Marar. Music director Vidyadharan Master was honoured at the function.

Devaswom assistant commissioner Murali, secretary Ramakrishnan and member of Cochin Devaswom Board Vanajakshi spoke on the occasion. Thekkinkkadu division councillor Pullaattu Sarala Devi proposed a vote of thanks.

A devotional music concert led by Vidyadharan Master was held on the occasion. Idea Star Singer winner Vivekanandan, playback singer Nishad, Kozhikode Rupesh and Idea Star singer fame Kumari Sikha participated in it.

Vadakkumnathan Shiva Temple is one of the largest and ancient Shiva temples in Kerala. Maha Shivarathri is a popular Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. Vadakkumnathan is not only famous for the festival but also one of the tourist spots in Thrissur district. The real meaning of the name Thrissur is the 'Town with the name of Lord Shiva.'

Jagdeesh, one of the officials of the temple, said that on the day of Shivarathri, 11 Gods and Goddesses on an elephant will come to offer their prayer in front of Lord Shiva. On the day 'appam' will be the special 'nivedyam'.

He added that 'appam' is offered to Vadakkumnathan only once that is on Shivarathri. There will be 'abhishekam' with 1,008 tender coconuts. On the day of Shivarathri, the temple remains open throughout the night.

Shivarathri is the night when Lord Shiva is said to have performed 'Tandava Nritya.' It falls on a moonless night either in February or March.

The festival is observed day and night. Devotees observe severe fast, chant the sacred Panchakshara Manthra 'Om Namah Shivaya'.

They keep themselves awake by listening to stories, hymns and songs. The fast is broken only the next morning after nightlong worship.

The other temples in Thrissur which celebrate Maha Shivarthri are Punkunnam Shiva Temple and Muthuvara Shiva Temple. Various cultural programmes will be held as a part of Shivarathri celebrations.

In addition to the observance of Shivarathri rites, most of the pilgrims offer 'Bali' (sacrifice) to their ancestors in the morning succeeding the night.

Other than Shivarathri, Thrissur Pooram and Aanayoottu are the main events at Vadakkumnathan Temple.

Kathak performance regales audience

Renovated Sopaanam of Sreerama Temple at Vadakkunathan Temple was opened four days ago. The Sopaanam is covered with brass and the renovation was carried out on the initiative of a devotee.
The Kathak performance by trio at Sivarathri mandapam, Vadakkumnathan Temple, was a different experience for the spectators gathered there.

Leena Malakar (Delhi), Molina Singh (Mumbai), Apoorva Wadke (Mumbai) were the performers who with their graceful movements captured the hearts of Thrissurites.

Leena Malakar is a young Kathak performer. She has been selected for the artistes' empanelment, Indian Council for Cultural Relations. She has performed at many prestigious festivals in India and abroad. She has been honoured with Sringar Mani Award by Sursansad, Mumbai (Kal Ki Kalakar).

A century passed, he is still alive and kicking

Venku Rama Swami Iyer with his family members.
By Anna Salas

"I am simply enjoying my old age with my children and grandchildren," said Venku Rama Swami Iyer, who turned 101 on September 4, 2011. "I even travel alone to Bangalore and other places," says the grand old man.

He has only regret in the life that he couldn't do his higher studies due to financial problems in the family. "I did complete my primary education at Kodakara School," said Venku Swami. He also learnt type-writing and shorthand from Swaminatha Iyer.

The veteran recalled that long before the World War II, he went to Ragoon, the capital of erstwhile Burma, in search of a job and worked in the Institute of Civil Contractor at Ragoon. "But I had to leave there soon along with my friends because of the war," he said.

The escape route from Ragoon was on foot. "I reached Imphal, the capital of Manipur, where the government helped us. I then stayed in hotel rooms for many days in Madras (Chennai) and then I could reach Thrissur," said Venku Swami.

Joining the marketing wing of Brooke Bond was the next step. "This gave me the opportunity to travel to Calcutta (Kolkata), Madras Bangalore and many other cities," he added.

The secret of a healthy, long life? "I have always lived a systematic life, right from my childhood days. I wake up early and do exercise every day," he said. "I also eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in time," he added. Recollecting olden days, Venku Swami said, "I used to walk from Irinjnalakuda to Nellayi. This has also contributed to my good health."

At 101, Venku Swami does all his chores without the help of anyone. He attributes this perfect life to the happiness in his family. Wife Lakshmi and children NV Jayaraman, NV Balakrishanan and Kalakrishanan are always with him in good and bad times, he said.

KBC Take Away a destination for healthy food

http://www.cityjournal.in/Newspaper/20120227/images/kbc.jpg
Customers at KBC TakeAway near East Fort.
By Niby Ann Mohan
KBC Take Away is a new revelation to the food lovers of Thrissur district. What we mean by Take away? Take aways are different from restaurants where we can order and take away the food to home or somewhere else. It is like a parcel food service which is not so familiar to Thrissur.
Here, three foodie friends joined together to establish a food-based business with a difference and it became a history. Their aim was not just supplying food but providing the healthiest food. After several studies and surveys, KBC Take away near East Fort was founded.
What is the catch on KBC? This is an era where people are more concerned about their health. They are more discreet nowadays about which kind of food is healthy and which one is not. In this situation, providing the healthiest food is not an easy task. That itself make KBC different.
KBC offers the healthiest food to the people without using ajinomoto, artificial food colours and baking soda. It is a known fact that chefs around the globe utilise ajinomoto to enhance the flavour of their cuisine at a time when there are reports that it causes severe health problems such as brain lesions, headaches, vomiting, nausea, damage to nerve cells, so on and so forth. For most of the dishes ajinomoto is a necessary ingredient in every hotel. But KBC is not using it even for preparing Chinese food, still the taste is even delicious as a homemade item.
KBC also uses only purified water treated according to WHO standards as in five-star hotels for cooking purpose. KBC has a plant for purifying water systematically. And they indicate that they are using separate utensils and oils for preparing vegetarian dishes and using fresh branded chicken and meat for cooking.
KBC targets families who want a change from day-to-day life. Families which have most of its members employed are the usual customers of KBC. Fresh, hot and healthy food within minutes attracts most of the customers. Families who were not comfortable in being in a restaurant also approach KBC. Huge rush will be seen in afternoon at KBC.
Within the one year, KBC started four counters at different parts of the city. Many persons came forward to launch restaurants emulating the KBC Take-away model. KBC invites them and they think that competition will make a difference. KBC has a home delivering service also. It will cover about 5km of the city. They are serving about 37 dishes like prawns fry, koonthal fry, fish peera, fried rice, ghee rice, different types of biriyanies, kallumakaya fry, mushroom masala, chana masala, crab roast, chilly gopi, gopimanjurrian, kada fry etc. KBC also give free offers for purchases.
KBC also plans to buy vegetables from organic gardens as a part of providing healthy food and also has a plan for delivering breakfast. If it works, it will be another milestone to the KBC Take away.

Mallika made her debut in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's movie Nizhalkuthu in 2002 when she was in the eighth standard. She said that she was not at all interested in dance and acting. She got a chance for her debut movie when her mother sent her photo to the photo shoot and thus Adoor Gopalakrishnan selected her to his movie.

Over the past 10 years, she has acted in 19 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. She added that she has mostly acted in Tamil movies. She has almost done 11 movies in Tamil. She has played the role of a sister of Vijay in Thirupachi.

She said she got encouragement to act in movies from her family. Her mother was her all time support. Mallika told City Journal that she cannot believe that she has got the Special Jury Award. She is really excited and said that her feelings cannot be expressed in words.

About Byari, she said the film depicts the culture, tradition, and language of the Byari community. It highlights the strict laws and regulations of marriage in the community, pros and cons of divorce in Islam and how it affects a woman. She added that the film based on "Iddat" (marriage) and "Thalaq" (divorce) in Islam tries to bring such problems to the notice of Islamic lawmakers. This is the first-ever film made in Byari language which has no script at all. It is spoken mainly by the people belonging to the community in North Kerala and Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

"It was really a tough role for me and it was a challenge for me and I knew this going to be memorable one in my whole life," she said.

She played a significant role in Cheran's Tamil movie Autograph which won her Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Mallika said that from now onwards she will take on acting seriously and want to make it a career as the national award made her more confident that she can do it.

She said that at heart she is like a man and her boyish attitude kept away men from her that's what she feels. Mallika said that she is happy as Ranjith's Indian Rupee has also won the national award for the best Malayalam film in which she has done a role. She has also acted a prominent role in Satyan Anthikkad's movie Snehaveedu.

Her upcoming projects in Malayalam are Number 66 Mother Bus by MA Nishad and Ozhimuri by Madhupal.

Mallika, the another actress from the Cultural capital has been introduced after Bhavana, Manju Warrier, Samyuktha Verma, Gopika, K R Vijaya, etc.

Lulu Carnival enters sixth day

The stalls at the ongoing Lulu Carnival at Lulu International Convention Centre.
The ten-day Lulu Carnival that enters its sixth day today, has surely stuck to its promise of being a complete shopping experience.
There are over 200 stalls at the carnival, but the stalls setup by the Road Safety Authority Motor Vehicle Department and Indian Medical Association (IMA) certainly stand out due to the importance of messages they convey.
The Road Safety Authority stall has been set up to bring about awareness among the public on the rules to be followed while crossing roads, driving two-wheelers and four wheelers. The stall is maintained by the motor vehicle department and volunteers of the road safety club from the NSS wing of Kerala Varma College have taken the initiative to meet the visitors at the stall.
Jayadas and Abhilash, who head the team of volunteers, said," We have been doing this service for a long time now. Most of the visitors have been cooperating with us and have come up with doubts too." They said confusions regarding the use of head phones was the most common question.
Another significant stall is the one by IMA, intending to promote blood donation among the public. "A lot of people are already aware about the processes of blood donation. We have been receiving a lot of enquiries about conducting camps," said Vinesh MV, a technician. The stall also provides services including checking the blood pressure and blood group.
The carnival, which will continue until April 1, is offering great discounts to the customers. Apparels, clothing, kitchen utensils, furniture, real estate, cosmetics and handicrafts are all on display.
Undoubtedly, the carnival provides you the best opportunity to explore all stalls and make your evening a memorable experience.

Empowering women with Oruma

Self-developing projects for women in Ramavarmapuram division

RAMAVARMAPURAM is famous for its Police Academy but few people know that the place also houses a Mahilamandiram which has been proved to be a women empowerment unit.

This Mahilamandhiram was established in 1975 to protect women who do not have anyone to care for. In 2008, social welfare department of Kerala government set up a unit called Oruma in the centre.

Today, the centre is successfully functioning under the guidance of superintendent in-charge, Ramlabi. Oruma includes units which produce soaps, detergents and phenyl. It also has a stitching unit, a sari designing unit, an embroidery working unit, a cattle farm and some vegetable farming area.

Says Ramlabi, "In 2010, the inmates underwent training under social welfare department's flagship programme on finishing school for women organised by Centre for Science and Technology Development (C-STED)."

There is a 10-member managing committee which looks after the affairs of the centre. This committee includes corporation councillor of Ramavarmapuram MC Gracy, welfare standing committee chairman Valsala Baburaj, Ramlabi and a few other social activists.

Promotion of the products is a major issue faced by the centre. Says Ramlabi, "We work hard but have no marketing space. Our products are also cheap compared to market rates." Currently their soaps and detergents are being distributed through Anganvadis and government offices only.

Superintendent said "During last year, we saved money in the accounts of the members of Oruma and even managed to buy them ornaments and other needy products."

"We even managed to send one of our inmates, Archana to college. She will be completing her graduation this year," said Ramlabi.

Councillor Gracy said "Corporation is providing all possible support for the Mahilamandiram. Other councillors, deputy mayor and mayor are giving special consideration for the institution." She also assured that they will look into providing a shed for the soap making unit and also allocate funds for the reconstruction of the Mahilamandhiram's boundary wall and streetlights.

Ramlabi said, "Currently the corporation, Satya Sai Baba Trust and Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy are helping us in our endeavours. We are hopeful that we will get better markets to sell our products. We also prepare soap and detergents according to orders," she informed. The contact number is 0487 2327258.

Activities

Soaps, detergents and phenyls are the major products of Oruma. These products do not contain any chemicals and use only pure coconut oil. They are sold under the brand names of Oruma.

There are seven sewing machines at the centre and the garments produced here are sold at various exhibitions, said Ramlabi.

Tapioca, spinach and plantain. The inmates have set up a small vegetable garden at the centre as a part of the developmental project.

The centre also rears cattle and is self-sufficient in milk products.

Umbrella making is another way of living that inmates have opted.

Enchantress in Mohiniyattam Pallavi Krishanan

PALLAVI Krishnan is a leading exponent of Mohiniyattam and a student of both Santiniketan (Viswa Bharati University) and Kerala Kalamandalam. She is well known for her tremendous efforts to promote and preserve as a living tradition, the Indian classical dance form. She is the Artistic Director of Lasya Akademi of Mohiniyattam, a centre for the promotion and professional training in Mohiniyattam, at Thrissur. It has a branch in Kolkata (West Bengal). She is more interested in experimentation by fusing the distinct strains of cultural entities that form the rich composition of our cultural heritage and has also successfully choreographed many items, both traditional and thematic.

Pallavi Krishnan talks to City Journal about her love with the enchanting art form, the vision and plans of Mohiniyattam.

When you seriously took Mohiniyattam as your carrier?

During my childhood days, say at the age of three, I visited Santiniketan with my parents. At Santiniketan I saw the various traditional dance forms. From that day onwards, I had a special love for all dance forms and was soon drawn towards traditional dance forms. After completing graduation in bioscience from Burdwan University in West Bengal, I joined Santiniketan for the BA course in dance. It was a four-year course. As Mohiniyattam was not in the syllabus, I learned it from Guru Kalamandalam Sankaranarayanan. Gradually, I was drawn towards Mohiniyattam. After my degree from Santiniketan, I took the permission of my parents and joined Kalamandalam for a two-year course under the guidance of Guru Kalamandalam Sankaranarayanan. Here, I got a real exposure and an opportunity to learn Mohiniyattam from very senior and experienced teachers.

Then, I got married to KG Gopalakrishnan, an employee with State Bank of India, Thrissur. He was a great source of inspiration and a good critic too. He is also a good writer on Kerala arts and culture. After that, I settled in Thrissur and learned Mohiniyattam under Guru Bharati Shivaji. The training helped me to become more professional in every aspect. She taught me how to communicate with audience, how to present Mohiniyattam more professionally on the stage. It was the turning point of my life.

You have choreographed many items, both traditional and thematic. Explain some of them?

I have choreographed many items, both traditional and thematic. I have many ideas and always had a desire to do something new from my childhood days. The desire helped me to do more research works on Mohiniyattam. After a consistent effort, I tried a new theme called 'Ritu Ranga,' which is about six seasons.

First, I selected the composition of Rabindranath Tagore on seasons, and at the same time, I selected Ritu Samhara written by Kalidasa, the Sanskrit poet and dramatist. I took the lines of both and composed a new 'Ritu Ranga' out of it.

Ritu Samhara was based on an imaginary theme by Kalidasa. It is a description of the seasons that come in cycles and portrays the human mind and its close interaction with nature. It also shows the impacts of the different seasons on the human body and mind. Rabindranath Tagore's elegant composition tells how nature changes its colour and also clearly leaves the message that nothing is static in life. The descriptions of the nature as well as the effect of the seasons in the human mind are mingled together in this choreography. This is how 'Ritu Ranga' came out.

Kavalam Narayana Panicker tuned the song in Sopanam style [The traditional temple music of Kerala]. When I presented it on stage, it was widely accepted by the audience. This is my first break event program. After that, I performed in several national and international stages. After 'Ritu Ranga,' it was 'Salabhanjika' that I performed. It was the story of a sculpturer and his sculptural work. 'Salabhanjika' is not just an ordinary stone .The poet tries to present the existence of 'Ahalya' in it. Ahalya was the wife of wise Gautama. Because of Indra's disguised performance, Gautama misunderstood Ahalya and cursed her by which Ahalya turned into a stone. He cursed her that she would stand scared and be invisible to everyone until Lord Rama touched the stone with his feet. I was inspired by the story of Ahalya and choreographed it. In this composition, I tried to express the universal feelings of women that arise in their hearts and the pain and suffering, the varied shades of conflict, short-lived happiness, dreams and aspirations she underwent. In other words it is a fusion of worldly desires and spiritual dignity. The script was written by Kavalam Narayana Panicker and music was composed by late Kalamandalam Hyder Ali. When I presented it on stage, it proved to be a great success and was widely accepted.

Vikramorvashiyam speaks about the eternal love between King Puruvaras and the beautiful Urvashi. The choreography, a dance-drama adapted from Kalidasa's play, examines their initial union, followed by the dramatic separation and recounts the couples' tribulations. The climax is their exciting reunion that holds the audience breathless.

'Panchabhootha,' the latest theme-based choreography starts with the concept of Sakthi and explains the union of matter with energy evolving the five elements, panchabhootas, sky, wind, fire, earth and water. The choreography says all truths have emerged from Mother Nature. It also explains a verse from the Taittiriya Upanishad.

As a dancer when you work on a new composition, do you consult with the experts?

Yes. Every time, when I work on a new composition, I consult with my Guru and take guidance from necessary sources.

You have established Lasya Academy of Mohiniyattam, based in Thrissur? What is the aim of the Academy?

My aim is to promote young artistes in Mohiniyattam. I always encourage my students to do something new and innovative without losing the original form. I believe hard work and dedication is required to produce high quality dancers. Hard work combined with traditional schooling (guru - shishya parampara) and an open attitude gives the students the disciplined training they need while still allowing them to explore their own creativity.

You have learned and associated with well-known gurus such as Kalamandalam Sankaranarayanan (Santiniketan), Kalamandalam Leelamma, Bharati Shivaji and Kalamandalam Kshemavathy. How was the experience?

It was really a great experience. I am proud and honoured to be a student of such a great gurus.

In which all Indian festivals have you performed?

My performances in India, among others, included leading festivals of the country such as the national dance festivals of the Central Sangeetha Nataka Akademi at various parts of the country, Konark Festival (Orissa), Mahabalipuram Festival (Chennai), New Choreographic Festival of Impresario India (Delhi), Doverlane Festival of Music & Dance (Kolkata), Soorya Festival, Nishagandhi Festival and Malabar Mahotsav (Kerala).

Share your experience in the film The Dance of the Enchantress.

It was a great experience to work with such great artistes. The Dance of the Enchantress is a documentary on Mohiniyattam. The documentary was made in such a way that it would be an enriching experience even for someone who knows nothing about the art form. The script for the documentary was prepared by Adoor and Brigitte. The director was French Mohiniyattom dancer, Brigitte Chataignier. Many senior artistes have been associated with it .They were Kalamandalam Satyabhama, Sreedevi Rajan, Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, Kalamandalam Leelamma, Smitha Rajan and Neena Prasad etc . Kavalam Sreekumar has sung the title song. The songs for the dances have been sung by Kalamandalam Jayaprakash, Kalamandalam Jagdeesh and Madhavan Namboothiri to the accompaniment of traditional instruments like the mrudangam, veena, flute, edakka and maddalam.

What are your future plans?

Bring more and more talented students to Mohiniyattam. I want to contribute more to this art form. I have to do more experiments and innovative things for the development of Mohiniyattam.

As the bus stopped on the way to Thrissur in Kerala it was at the famous Palghat Gap, the only break in the Western Ghats where the elevation drops to 300 metres. It is from this gap that monsoon winds rush in to reach mainland India from the coast.

The pre-monsoon clouds assisted by the wind were rushing through as though to set up appointments for the rest of India with the real monsoon on its way. The Indian Metrological Department predicts that the monsoon will arrive on the coast of Kerala at its appointed day, June 1, give or take a few days. It is time therefore to prepare to receive the monsoon.

The next 60 to 120 days is when the country will receive its annual quota of water in the form of rain. In the district of Thrissur with a large number of dug-wells, a programme called ‘Mazhapolima' has been running for some years.

Mohanlal to the aid of aged moms

THRISSUR: Kodungallur will set an example by adopting 500 aged mothers, who are above 70 years of age, and providing medical, financial assistance for the selected members. The programme, named, 'Oru Kavil Kanji', will be launched in September. "Actor Mohanlal will be our chief patron. The actor will participate in numerous campaigns urging children to look after their aged parents. He will also adopt an aged mother and bear her expenses," said MLA T N Prathapan. The MLA has formed a committee called Karuna to implement the programme. The total expense for this year amounts to Rs 35 lakh, said the MLA.

Prathapan said elderly mothers will be selected by a committee after assessing factors like where they live, are they alone, do they have financial support etc. Selected mothers will get a financial aid of Rs 500 every month, he added.

To communicate with the elderly and ascertain their needs, kids will be selected from each ward with five mahila pradhan members. Parents who are willing to support the programme can send their kids, said organizers. There are 146 wards in Kodungallur.

As many children abandon their aged parents on roadsides or in orphanages, Kodungallur constituency shows the way in protecting elderly persons. The constituency adopts 500 aged mothers who were above 70 year old and provide them financial and medical service.

The elderly mothers in the constituency are selected by a committee based on whether they are living alone, without the financial support from the part of their children and nobody is there to looking after them. Financial support of Rs 500 will be given to them every moth. The committee is constituted under the leadership of Kodungallur MLA T N Prathapan.

"To encourage people to look after their aged parents, actor Mohanlal functions as the chief patron of the committee for aged mothers. The programme named, 'Oru Kavil Kanji' is implemented by the committee, 'Karuna' and the programme costs Rs. 35 lakhs per year", said T N Prathapan.

The programme is launched in September. For providing service to the selected mothers, a grandchild selects from each house and five Mahila pradhan members are selected from each ward to take the elderly mothers to hospital. In Kodungallur there are 146 wards.

Grandchildren and Mahila Pradhan members will visit the aged ones frequently and enquire about their needs and will take them to hospital if needed. Panchayat presidents will also be members of the committee.

Putting their heart and hands together, 136 students of Music Centre, School of Music Thrissur managed to create both a Guinness World Record and a Limca Book of Record.
The children bagged the record for the largest keyboard ensemble.
The attempt at the Kinnatingal Tennis Trust Auditorium, Puzhakkal on November 20, last year, managed to enter the record books.
136 students, aged 6 to 17, had participated in the event. All students were disciples of Raju Master, the director of Music Centre, School of Music.
Football world cup hit numbers waka waka, give me freedom and one from the evergreen Bollywood ‘Sholay’ were the songs that were played to create this record.
The earlier Guinness record was held by an American music team that used 107 keyboards. This record was then broken by MS Martin’s Academy in Chennai.
The certificates will be received by the children within three months, informed Raju master.

Preparations for Pulikkali begin

Preparations for Pulikkali to be staged in the city during Onam began on Tuesday.

Mayor I.P. Paul inaugurated the preparations at a ‘Pulikkali Kodiyettam’ function at Naduvilal here. A ‘vilambara ghoshayatra’ was held ahead of the ‘Kodiyettam’.

Many popular teams in the city are not participating this time owing to rising cost of preparations, says Baby P. Antony, president of the Pulikkali Ekopana Samithy.

“If 13 teams participated in the pulikkali competition in 2008, the number reduced to 11 in 2009, 10 in 2010 and 8 in 2011. This year it became six.”

According to the samithy, on an average each ‘pulikkali’ team will have to spend over Rs. 5 lakh each year.

The teams depend on donations from local people, financial assistance from Thrissur Corporation and aid from Tourism Department for meeting the expenses.

But the assistance given by the State Tourism Department and the Thrissur Corporation was inadequate, Mr. Antony points out. The samithy had submitted a memorandum to authorities to hike the assistance.

Carnival fever will grip the city on the final day of Onam celebrations. About 500 men, dressed up as leopards and tigers, will prance about the streets in a rollicking show of Pulikkali.

This is the time of the year when pot-bellied men are in huge demand locally. Pulikkali squads hunt for fat performers as faces of tigers and leopards can be drawn well on big bellies.

Stage is also set for another popular game during Onam – Onathallu – at Kunnamkulam. An indigenous form of wrestling, ‘Onathallu’, is also known as ‘Kayyankali’, ‘Onappeda’, and ‘Vattamkalippaatt’.

It involves friendly folk-style wrestling bouts that invigorate celebrations of agrarian plenitude. Unlike classical martial arts, Onathallu lacks niceties of form and a deep combat philosophy.

Carnival spirit grips Thrissur city

Here a growl, there a growl. A chorus of growls fill the air when the dancers take to the streets. The crowds goad the dancers to let loose their best howls and growls. The atmosphere is electric.

A carnival fever grips the city on the final day of Onam celebrations. About 500 men, dressed up as leopards and tigers, prance about the streets in a spectacular show of Pulikkali. Preparations for Pulikkali start months ahead of the event. Most groups have corpulent dancers. This is the time of the year when pot-bellied men are in huge demand locally. The fatter, the merrier. Pulikkali squads hunt for fat performers as faces of tigers and leopards can be drawn well on big bellies. The dancers plunge into a kind of crude belly dance, the movements infuse life into the painted tigers and leopards. Some of the performers get their bodies painted in fluorescent paint.

Masked charm

Onam celebrations in Thrissur are incomplete without Kummatti, a masked dance. The people of Kizhakkumpattukara Thekkumuri, Vadakkumuri and Nallankara, stage Kummatti on Moonnam Onam day. People in Chelakkattukara and Ancheri perform it on Nalam Onam day.

The Thekkumuri festival features three 63-year-old wooden Kummatti masks — of Kiratam, Thalla and Hanuman — claimed to be among the oldest in these parts. Karapurathu Raman Nair, Karapurathu Govindan, Kutty Nair, Karapurathu Madhavan Nair and Viswanathan Achari took the initiative to craft the masks. In 1935, metal masks were crafted for the Kizhakkumpattukara fete and in 1959 ‘Chetti Vadyam’ was introduced. Western bands too were included later on. The Thekkummuri Desa Kummatti Maholsav, held at Kizhakkumpattukara, is believed to be more than 100 years old.

THRIKKAKKARAPPAN SALE AT PEAK

This is Saritha’s sixth year at Thekkinkadu Maidan to sell clay made pyramid structures of Thrikkakkarappan. Sarithas husband Unni Mon is the brother of Chandran who introduced readymade clay Thrikkakkarappan to Thrissur Onam market 11 years ago. Though Chandran died eight years ago, his brother and wife continues the work as people prefer Chandran’s Thrikkakkarappan statues.

Saritha from Cherur is one of the Thrikkakkarappan statue sellers at jam-packed Onam market at Thekkinkadu Maidan along with plenty of flower sellers and other merchants.

It is believed that the structures of Thrikkakkarappan are inevitable part of Onam celebrations. The clay pyramid structure with four faces and a flat top is used during Onam celebrations which represent Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. For some people the pyramid represents both King Mahabali and Vishnu. Besides all, it is also referred as Onathappan by some people. Thrikkakarappan is the presiding deity in the famous Thrikakkara temple in Ernakulam District and is closely associated with the Onam myth.
he pyramid structures, a set of three are priced from Rs 100 to Rs 500 according to the size.

Saritha added though the prevailing market of sculptures is good, unexpected rain upset the sale. People leave the spot even its peak shopping time due to rain. Flower merchants also have the same complaint. Rain is a hindrance for all the sellers.

Buyers throng shops for Onam purchases

Shopping centres across Thrissur city urban areas and towns reported a big rush as the public did their Onam purchases. There was huge traffic build up in the streets as buyers thronged the markets and bazaars. The buses were packed with people.

An Onam market set up by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) at Thekkinkadu Maidan witnessed heavy rush as buyers were attracted by the fair prices and quality products. It sells around 38 products, including rice, sugar, wheat, oil and vegetables, at subsidised rates.

“We offer 20 per cent subsidy on vegetables and 40 per cent subsidy on foodgrain and groceries,” said a vendor at Supplyco.

Free Onam kits, each including two kg rice, 100 gm tea leaf, 500 gm sugar, 200 gm chilli powder and 100 gm tea leaf, are being distributed to the BPL ration card holders, by the State government.

The beneficiaries can collect their kits from Maveli stores and government outlets.

A 45-day Onam Supplyco market, which has a daily turnover of Rs. 2 lakh, will be open till August 28.

“High volume of sales is being witnessed at the Supplyco market,” states M. V. Sathyan, junior manager at Supplyco. The Thrissur District Cooperative Bank organised the ‘Dr. Emmatti Lonappan Smaraka Kaithari Exhibition- 2012’, an exhibition of handloom and khadi products.

The exhibition offers 20 per cent discount for handloom products and 30 per cent discount for Khadi products. Prizes and gifts are also on offer.

“In the context of a general rise in prices, the Onam markets set up by the government have been a great support to people,” said Krishnaveni Nair, a homemaker.

An exhibition organised by the Arts and Crafts Exposition (ACE) at Pandi Samooha Matom showcases ethnic products from Orissa.

Fashion show to rev up Onam in Thrissur

Celebrating Onam here has always been a tryst with indigenous art, but the cultural capital of Keralites is now taking it to the fashion ramps, to give a new push to the festive spirit.

The city would witness its first ever official fashion event on August 30, with the Regional Theatre in Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi hosting the audition round of a runway show featuring youths.

The event, “Wild Att,” is organised by Ko-Ordin events – an Ottapalam-based event management group, in association with Headquarters, a clothing brand.

According to the organisers, the decision to fix Thrissur as the venue was made deliberately with a view to maintaining the event’s uniqueness.

“Instead of just the ‘hot and glamour quotient,’ we reckon the show as an opportunity for the participants to explore the world of fashion in a traditional, cultural way; and we ideally chose Thrissur, the cultural capital for the same,’’ explained Shradheyan, managing partner, Ko-Ordin events.

In his opinion, Keralites have already proven that fashion is not just an exotic way to express their tastes, but it also can have a traditional, artistic face to it.”

The organisers are expecting the participation of 500-750 enthusiasts, with youths from across the state registering their names to take part in the audition round.

“We have reached up to the prospective candidates through social networking websites and received applications from all parts of the state,’’ said Manoj, an organiser.
