When one thought of East Africa, Nairobi is the one city the one thinks about, or should I say myself think about. I am sincerely blown away by the amount of development of Dar. how can Dodoma (New Capital City) compete! I am awed by this well planned city.
Are there any shanties around the peripheral as is typical of many capital cities?
This city can compare with Nairobi in every way I must admit to say. :)

we call them squater...no proper streets,water/sewage system, postal address, you have to pass someone's compound to get to your house...am serious...sounds funny...a friend of mine had to build a pit latrine for his neighbor as a condition to let him access his house.

I can see 10 buildings u/c (if I counted right) in that pic. Really all Dar would need is a few tall skyscrapers scattered around in that area or just one cluser and it'd have a nice (as in comparable w/ some other developing cities) skyline.

btw what's the name of that area across the harbor?

Upanga (which is not seen on the above photo) has more than TEN 15 storey towers u/c now. Kiligoland...we need an aerial shot of upanga. Literally the whole of Upanga is u/c:nuts:

great stuff kiligoland.

another 25 storey is u/c right besides Umoja Vijana unfinished 25 storey.

just across the road is 12 floor Dar tech teacher's tower u/c. Dar tech are going into joint venture with Korea to build a 22 storey tower along bibi titi road/close to akiba.

All these projects are in Upanga!

Actually the most construction in Upanga are on Mindu Street. Virtually every house on this street is converted into a highrise block.

good to hear that akiba is also going to have several towers, you know i took some photo last year, when coming to the city from morogoro road passing umoja wa vijana towards NSSF tower and the blue glassy tower near it is pretty cool, there is a feeling that you are now entering the city centre, more towers there will support the umoja wa vijana tower and looks wee bit good IMO

So there's construction in Upanga, and the CBD and Kariakoo (which were in that photo?)..Nice, can't wait to see how the skyline looks in 3-5 years.

the photo shows kariakoo. upanga is having construction boom just as kariakoo had in the 90s but Upanga's are bigger, taller & better designed than kariakoo's.

just to give you an idea of already built upanga residential towers

these aerial photos give a true picture why we have so much congestion on DSM roads...no ring roads on the periphery of the cbd.

Jangwani should have been with many fly-overs connecting upanga/kinondoni/magomeni/mchikichini/kariakoo/ilala/kigogo/fire...or atleast a ring road on the border of jangwani crossing all these locations...literally a ring road around jangwani and having outlets at various junctions.

What should we do about this? Can we send these photos to Tanroad or Magufuli?

I mean it does need a rocket scientist to figure out the problem...

Does Tanroads do any aerial photos of DSM to see were is the problem?

Indeed my question was confusing but i meant to ask something like this; i can see Samora tower and both Rita and Citi to the left but what towers are these; 1. The tower right of Samora on the waterfront. 2. Tower infront of Samora away from waterfront(seem to be 2 towers) 3. Tower diagonal to Samora to the right and right of tower no.2 along the road

Dar is starting to get a skyline however there is a huge need for beautification. Nairobi looks so much nicer because they clean the streets and create beautiful garden in the public spaces. A good start would be the waterfront.

Moshi in the race for a city status Send to a friend

Moshi Urban centre, among the cleanest town in Africa

By Zephania Ubwani, Moshi

Moshi, often emerging the cleanest and well planned urban centre in the country, may overtake neighbouring Arusha in the race for a city status if local politicians agree on the extension of its boundaries.

Discussions are currently underway to have parts of Moshi Rural district hived into the proposed city and thus pave the way for elevation of the municipality now covering only 58 square kilometres.

Officials of the municipality told Sunday Citizen earlier this week that there were indications that plans to extend the boundaries would materialise as both local authorities see elevation to a city as beneficial to the area.

Areas that are likely to be included within the boundaries of the proposed city are Sango, part of lowlands to the south such as TPC, Mabogini and Kahe as well as Kiladeda on the Arusha road, a few kilometres short of Maili Sita.

Should Moshi succeed in its mission and the government agree to upgrade it, number of cities in the country will increase to five. Currently there are four cities of Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Tanga and Mbeya.

For years, Arusha has been yearning for city status. But the desire to have Moshi town upgraded to the city sharply contrasted the situation in Arusha where political bickering and poor infrastructure have delayed its elevation to a city despite the government’s declaration to make it a city in 2005.

Officials have repeatedly admitted that local leaders were delaying the process by not agreeing to hive parts of Arumeru into the proposed Arusha city as suggested by town planners and experts from Tamisemi.

That would have more than tripled the Arusha municipal area from the present 93 square kilometres to 270. The situation has been compounded by poor road network for the fast growing Arusha, now notorious for traffic jams.

Currently Arusha has the population of over 400,000 more than twice the population of Moshi. The business sector has picked up in recent years, especially in the hotel industry, commercial farming and real estate.

“Both parties the Municipal Council and the Moshi Rural District Council have Okayed the proposal to have the city council for Moshi. The bottlenecks have been how to meet the criteria,” lamented one official.

The desire for the city status has often times been expressed by both the planners and local politicians in the area who insist Moshi, the Kilimanjaro region headquarters, has good roads infrastructure.

Mr Neville Msaki, the municipal engineer confirmed initiatives currently underway to elevate the municipality of 200,000 people and which has a good record in sanitation and minimal impact of squatters.

He said there are several criteria for upgrading towns/municipalities to cities and that with the exception of few; Moshi meets most of them, especially in infrastructure.

However, he could not mention the criteria used for the purpose.

Municipal director or the regional officials were not readily available to comment on the matter but the municipality on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro has been on record as the cleanest in the country.

“We have been declared the cleanest municipality not only in the country but in Africa a number of times,” boasted Mr Fabian Maganga, a sanitation engineer with the Moshi Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (MUWSA).

He revealed that Moshi recently emerged the leading urban centre in the entire eastern Africa region in sewerage coverage, ahead of other utilities surveyed in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Seychelles.

In Moshi the sewerage coverage among its population is 44 per cent, far ahead of Iringa which emerged number six among the eleven utilities surveyed in the region recently.

The southern highlands regional headquarters, which also had at times emerged the cleanest municipality in the country, had sewerage coverage of 15 per cent in the survey findings made available in Moshi.

Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial hub where about 70 per cent of the population live in informal settlements, is at the bottom with only seven per cent of its population connected to sewers.

Moshi was ahead of Nairobi, which despite being notorious for some of the worst slums in Africa, emerged second with 40 per cent sewerage coverage, followed by Eldoret (27 per cent) and a fourth placed city in Seychelles which hit 21 per cent.

Naivasha, also in Kenya came fifth with 17 per cent coverage ahead of Iringa (15 per cent), Mombasa (12 per cent), Kericho (9 per cent) while Kisumu shared same points (8 per cent) with an unidentified city in Uganda ahead of last placed Dar es Salaam (7 per cent).

“Moshi was not only ahead of cities and municipalities in eastern Africa but even some cities in southern Africa such as Lusaka and Chipata,” Engineer Maganga further said.

The two Zambian cities had sewerage coverage of only 11 per cent, he stated adding that sewerage coverage in towns and cities was higher in southern Africa states, especially in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana there they ranged between 60 and 100 per cent.

As of September last year, MUWSA had a total of 2,100 sewerage connections and a 46 kilometres long sewers network with an average of 3,800 cubic metres of sewerage discharged per day.

Besides sewerage, about 40 per cent of the estimated 200,000 Moshi residents are also connected to the central water supply system run by MUWSA, according to the authority's director general Anthony Kasonta.

The utility supplies about 24,500 cubic metres of water a day through 22km of the trunk mains, 420km for distribution lines and 650km for consumer connections. Water is also supplied to parts of Moshi Rural district.

Really? okay, let's read more of your 'research' mzee wa statistics as you call yourself.

Moshi was ahead of Nairobi, which
despite being notorious for some of
the worst slums in Africa, emerged
second with 40 per cent sewerage
coverage, followed by Eldoret (27 per
cent) and a fourth placed city in
Seychelles which hit 21 per cent.
and more from you

Dar es Salaam, the country’s
commercial hub where about 70 per
cent of the population live in informal
settlements, is at the bottom with only
seven per cent of its population
connected to sewers.
thank you for your statistics bitter man, like dhuks always says, you need to stop embarrassing yourself
PS Nairobi is a city with a population of about 3.5M (extrapolating from the 2009 census which put it at 3.1) and with a total metropolitan area of about 5M(extrapolating from.2009 when it was 4.5)
Only a fool will rejoice when a town like mwanza has 10% more sewarage coverage than it. 40% of 5M is 2M, 44% of 200k is 88. I doubt if you really made it to college
Thank you for starting a silly argument and out arguing yourself by proving yourself wrong I don't want this thread to be derailed as it is a nice thread about Dar but I couldn't help but spot the irony,

Only a layman like u will be in a position of not being able to differentiate between "unplanned settlement, informal settlements and a slum" according to UN Habitat criteria! For instance informal settlement can mean even lacking of a physical address or a living house in a farm no matter a villa or a palce since farms r not classified as residential areas the fact that describes Dar perfectly, it's Masterplan has never been upgraded since 1970s and sewage treatment is decentralized as septic tanks r mainly used unlike other places where sewage treatment plants treat the bulk! BUT Nairobi leads Africa in the number of Slums out of 3 mio. inhabitants 2 mio. live in slums (Kibera, Mathare, korogocho et al) i mean corrugated shacks with flying toilets (mind u slums have their own criteria) since no even a space for a decent septic tank! so watch out what u wanna start here! I can back up my statement from UN Habitat reports! U always think u r smart but i am afraid u don't understand anything! BTW The Citizens is owned by Nationmedia so the authenticity of its report at times is doubted imagine "they r reporting these statistical facts as if they r the ones who did the findings"! that is why i was looking for the UN Habitat report! Back to the topic!

I admit that Dar has taken great strides. It is stunning and beautiful but you should also note that a city should look clean from the ground up with wide avenues and public parks. Hapa Kenya watu walijenga majengo ya kifahari na hutumia hela nyingi kisha baadaye wizara ya barabara ililazimika kuvunja ili kupanua barabara. Heko kwa wapangaji wa Dar. Huo ndio kusema na kutenda

Hapana, TPA iko pembeni ya hiyo PSPF! Barabara ya kutoka ferry (sokoine drive) ndo inatenganisha majengo hayo mawili! TPA wako kwenye foundation and ground floor stage, wao bado sana japo kwa hatua waliyofikia sasa, mda si mrefu jengo litaanza kuchomoka juu ya mabati yaliyozungushwa! kwenye hiyo picha hapo juu ni slightly on the left hand side of PSPF.
