About
An urban space centered around water
This is a shared vision of a great urban space of sporting venues, mills and breweries, all connected by the thread of water. This is the oldest and most significant place for recreation in Cape Town. It is an extraordinary natural and cultural landscape centered around water.
Newlands is best known for its rainfall and not surprisingly its brewing and rugby and cricket grounds. The sports stadia are amongst the oldest and best-known in the world. The Liesbeek River Valley is also the cradle of the brewing and milling industry, due to its high rainfall and quality water, with the first beer being brewed as long ago as the 1690s.
A collective vision
The aim of this investigative report is to describe an overarching vision for the precinct, rather than each landowner undertaking planning in isolation. This then provides a framework for individual actions within sub-precincts.
The study area for this project is approximately 33 ha in extent and its boundary runs along the Liesbeek River, including Josephine Mill, the Mill House, Newlands Terraces, Newlands Rugby Stadium, Kelvin Grove, Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Ground, Newlands Station, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, South African Breweries and the Newlands Swimming Pool.

Vision
Newlands Recreation Zone
The Liesbeek River forms the green artery of Newlands. Cafés overhang the water’s edge. People stroll safely along the river and experience rejuvenation in nature.
A Village Green in front of the Breweries is opened up for community use – a market on the weekends, and open air concerts on Sunday evenings. Tourists visit the museums and stadia and picnic on the lawn in the shade of the trees. A band is playing and children are climbing trees. Visitors drink artisan beer and icy cold Newlands spring-water.
Water from the Newlands and Kommetjie springs wells up in fountains and is taken free by passers-by. The smell of fresh bread, baked with the stone-ground flour from the Josephine Mill is in the air.
Children visit the cricket and rugby stadia. With eyes wide as saucers, they hear the emulation of the crowd’s roar as they walk through the players’ tunnel, visit the waterwheel at Josephine Mill and learn about the river and the environment.
The Sports Science Institute conducts outreach programmes on the Village Green in the evenings. Newlands Swimming Pool has become a world class indoor aquatic centre. The picnic area at the swimming pool provides a link between Main Road Promenade and the River Walk.
The Recreation Zone becomes one of the top 10 tourist attractions in Cape Town. Walking maps and branded signage show the way. There is a boutique hotel and shops. A special train delivers tourists to an upgraded Newlands Station and a shuttle service takes people between the Precinct, Cavendish Square, the springs and hotels in the area.
Newlands hosts Cape Town’s own ‘Oktoberfest’ to celebrate beer and brewing in the Liesbeek Valley. Visitors can hear talks and see films on all aspects related to the Precinct – environment / heritage / brewing / milling / energy / sports / recreation / health.
