Butare's museum

The National museum of Rwanda is located in the town of Butare (Butare is considered to be the intellectual centre of the country with its National Museum, arboretum, and several academic (university) and research institutions.) It is considered to be one of the best museum in East Africa (some say the best by the quality of it's ethnoligic collection).
Photographs of the early twentieth century. Exhibitions of traditional ornaments. all about the geology of Rwanda and even booked a showcase to the language: Kinyarwanda. This museum has rooms dedicated to its history, geography, music, etc. .. is really full. The museum also houses a craft school where production is sold locally.

By the way, the former name of Butare was Astrida, named after the queen's name.

National University of Rwanda

The National University of Rwanda (NUR; French: Université nationale du Rwanda) is the largest university in Rwanda. It is located in the city of Butare and was established in 1963 by the government in cooperation with the Congregation of the Dominicans from the Province of Quebec.

When it was established, the NUR had three divisions (Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences, and a Teacher Training College), 51 students and 16 lecturers. The university suffered badly during the genocide and had to close in 1994, reopening in April 1995. At that time English was introduced as a medium of instruction alongside French.

As of 2005 it focuses on Science and Technology and Humanities, with French and English as the medium of instruction.

The ponds are used for fish farming (eg tilapia) or rice cultivation. The ponds are coupled with the breeding of pigs and rabbits so that animals excreta serve as fertilizer for rice cultivation or food for fish.

The whole valley is occupied by fish farms and rice paddies. The advantage of these experiments is that they will enable Rwanda to be as self sufficient as possible in terms of nutrition and it will reduce prices of basic commodities.The other advantage is that this system reintroduced nature in the city and create an extra ecosystem for many birds such as the ibis.
