engineer.akash April 2nd, 2011, 10:24 PM Princess road to be reopened soon
MYSORE: Come May 15, a section of Krishnarajasagar road ( Princes road), which was closed for development work, will be reopened much to the relief of tourists visiting Brindavan Gardens.
Deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta, who reviewed the progress of the project, has directed the officials of Mysore City Corporation and public works department to complete the work by mid-May. Traffic on the busy Prince Road was diverted since June last year to facilitate widening of a railway bridge and a road. Though the deadline for the project work was February 2011, it was delayed due to technical glitches. Due to closure of the main road, vehicle users were to make a detour.
South Western Railway DRM (Sr) Anup Dayanand Sadhu attributed the delay to suspension of work during Dasara celebrations. However, now the railway bridge extension work is complete and the remaining UGD and road work is being carried out in full swing.
Meanwhile, members of Mysore Grahakara Parishat, a citizens forum, are skeptical of the officials meeting the deadline. In a release, R Chandra Prakash and Bhamy V Shenoy of MGP said the road has been shut for 10 months and only two meetings have been conducted by the deputy commissioner on this score. "It seems the officials are casual about it," they said.

engineer.akash April 2nd, 2011, 10:40 PM PAY & PARK IN CITY SOON
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=27725&type=news
Mysore, Mar. 13 (KCU&KK)- To ease the parking problem in the city, a Pay & Park scheme would be introduced soon on major roads which would also reap a lot of revenue for the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).
Disclosing this to Star of Mysore here today, MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar said, the State Govt. has recently constituted a Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) to evolve a scheme to cover traffic management, parking place, orientation of Circles, positioning of signal lights, width of roads and such features. A huge volume with all the comprehensive details has already been dispatched to all City and Municipal Corporations for implementation at the earliest, he added.
Model City: Explaining the scheme, Raikar said "Mysore has been chosen as a model city for implementing DULT scheme. Sai Engineering Company has been assigned the task of surveying traffic flow and parking facilities. Other than Pay & Park scheme, the DULT directive will also cover positioning of advertisement hoardings and the revenue to be generated from them. All the proposals will be placed before the Council Budget meeting to seek the approval. Major roads like Devaraj Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road, Ashoka Road, Irwin Road, JLB Road, Kalidasa Road, Vishwamanava Double Road and Chamaraja Double Road will be covered under the scheme."
Lauding the novel DULT plan, Mayor Sandesh Swamy pointed out that it would mobi lise a lot of resource which will be earmarked for maintenance of the particular road.
Dy. Commissioner Harsha Gupta told SOM that the top brass of MCC, PWD, MUDA and Police Department would be convened for a meeting soon to apprise them about the DULT scheme.
ART ON SHABBY WALLS, CAVA STUDENTS' VENTURE
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=27730&type=news
Mysore, Mar. 13 (KCU&HT)- Students of Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) have embarked upon an innovative idea of painting on dilapidated walls of the city. They are trying to shy away from commercial and stereo-typed art expos held at prestigious art galleries with all fanfare.
CAVA students Shoaib, Smi-tha, Bharathkumar, Viki, Shivu, Bharathi, Santhosh and Trupti have initiated the wall-painting to draw the attention of the public and take away the boredom and stress of daily life.
The students took up the novel work last evening projecting their thoughts and imaginations through painting on walls of closed factories in Yadavagiri Industrial Area here.
Interestingly, the students have chosen only shabby walls possibly to give them a new look and meaning.

Work on the large dome is underway at Vivekananda Circle in city to house the bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda at a cost of Rs. 37 lakh under the CM's Rs.100 crore special grant. The Circle will be modernised on the lines of the Circle by the same name at Basavanagudi in Bangalore. Picture right shows the marble statue of Swami Vivekananda which was dismantled from the Circle to make way for the bronze statue. The marble statue has now been abandoned at one of the parks near the Circle.

engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 07:50 PM MCC makes amends on use of special grants
Times of India, The, Mar 3, 2011
MYSORE: Public pressure has prevailed over the officials of the Mysore City Corporation. Under fire over the use of Rs 100 crore CM special grants, it is making amends.
* The three subways proposed at the Krishnaraja circle has been dropped and instead one each will come up at the Mysore Zoo to help tourists and at the City Bus Stand connecting to Tataiah Park to facilitate easy flow of traffic at the city centre.
* The tank bund road separating the zoo from the Karanji lake, a connecting stretch between Nazarbad and Narasimharaja boulevardwill not be closed for the mega aquarium coming up at a corner of the zoo.
* The repair works of Vijayanagar ground-level reservoir that supplies 12 million gallons per day (MGD) will be taken up in stages and done by March, 2012.
* The much-delayed ambitious Raja Marg will be completed in two stages. By this Dasara season, stretch till Ayurveda college junction will be through.
The district minister S A Ramdas on Wednesday reviewed the projects taken up with Rs 100 crore funding. Briefing reporters, he said: "In all Rs 66 crore worth projects have been through, while 15 projects are on. They will be done by April end.
The missing links in the UGD network is being worked on and in six months the sewage flow to storm water drain will be stopped. There were problems with designs to implement Raja Marg project to spruce up Dasara procession route and it is now decided to be taken up in two stages. Ramadas said he will take feedback from elected representatives on March 12 on the projects to be taken up with additional Rs 100 crore grants.
The meeting attended by deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta and corporation commissioner K S Raykar also reviewed JNNURM projects.

engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 08:34 PM `Install traffic lights only where needed'
Lawrence Milton & H M Aravind, TNN, Feb 21, 2011, 10.44pm IST
MYSORE: When police identified several locations in the city for better traffic regulation, they were thinking futuristically.
As they put their plans on the drawing board and introduced systematic traffic flow using traffic lights at some busy junctions, it regulated the flow of vehicles. When funds were available, they utilized them and put in place an infrastructure for future needs. Ironically, this has now resulted in problems for the motorists.
Sample this: Motorists at Adichunchanagiri-Udayaravi road junction at Kuvempunagar are facing a few traffic-related problems these days. There is an impatience similar to vehicle users of Bangalore, while waiting for the green light. Reason: The system is not calibrated to the vehicular density hitting the stretch, as a result, many are forced to jump signals.
The induced impatience is such that many don't bother to follow the general traffic norms at many of junctions, especially on the outskirts of the city where signalling systems have been introduced. Blame it on the lack of coordination between the cops and the Mysore City Corporation, the motorists are facing difficulties as the MCC has awarded maintenance of the traffic infrastructure to a private company.
Many signalling devices are not calibrated to the corresponding vehicular density, as a result, vehicle users violate rules by jumping the signal posing danger to road users. The Pattabi Josi circle at the MUDA corner, Bogadi road-Government printing press junction, Kantharaja Urs road-Akshaya Bhandar junction etc., are some such dangerous pockets.
Vehicle users feel that the traffic signal at Bogadi road-Government press junction, K G Koppal railway under bridge point, Kalamandira, Udayagiri etc., are not necessary as traffic flow is not that heavy. But authorities reason that keeping in view of the city's growth, they have installed them.
Udayagiri traffic light is of no use because road users do not follow the rules, claims Venkatesh, a vehicle user.
But DCP (traffic) P Rajendra Prasad said: "Traffic signal upgradation work is underway and hence there is some confusion. At several places cables are damaged due to civil works. Maintenance of all the traffic signal lights is given to a private party by the MCC and once they complete the work we will verify and rectify any mistakes," he added.
Traffic signals have mushroomed in the recent past and totally there are 43 of them.
Source (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Install-traffic-lights-only-where-needed/articleshow/7542206.cms)
Only 43? :( Mysore has many junctions, we need traffic signals at all those places.Reporter is a retard, kudos to police who are thinking futuristically. These reporters are sick--they have problems even if we plan and implement things for future.
Mysore must look forward and not backward.
engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 08:38 PM Pedestrians need more time at zebra crossings
MYSORE: It's rush hour traffic at the central business district and people are milling the area. At the Mysore Palace surrounding, tourists are jocularly walking till they reach Basaveshwara circle abutting it. The busy junction is a nightmare for the pedestrians, as the pedestrian signals have gone dead.
At Ramaswamy junction, the situation is a little better. But the red never turns green. Ditto at JLB road-Devaraj Urs road junction and at Field Marshal Cariappa circle (Metrople junction) further down the road. Worse still, this are areas frequented by students.
The traffic signal lights are of no use to the pedestrians, because they are either malfunctioning or not pedestrian friendly. In addition to this, the time allotted for the pedestrians at Ramaswamy junction is just 10 seconds!
The worst-affected are pedestrians, who are largely students and senior citizens. Such is the problem at some locations that pedestrians have to jaywalk rather than use the zebra crossings at the junctions. A reality check of some of the traffic signal junctions threw up a startling fact: At none of these places are pedestrians considered important. They have been overlooked either by not giving enough time to cross the road or simply there is no pedestrian signal for them. This, especially, when these junctions are busy.
"Every time I cross JLB road, I fear for my life because signal lights at the Devaraja Urs road junction is on the fritz," says Kavya of Maharani's Arts College, adding: "There is no signal for pedestrians at this poin." Her friend Kalai Selvi, a BBM student, too expresses shock over the management of signal lights.
Prashanth of JSS College says he visits the NCC office near Deputy Commissioners office regularly. To get there he has to cross JLB road at Devaraja Urs road signal junction where the traffic density is heavy. "Without time for pedestrians it is highly dangerous for them to cross the road," he said.
The scene is no different at residential areas where the infrastructure has been recently created. Though signal lights are put up, there are hardly any road marks making it difficult for the public to use the facility. A senior traffic officer claimed that depending upon volume of pedestrian movement they calibrate time ranging from 10 seconds to a maximum 30 seconds. At present, the MCC which maintains all the 43 signal lights in the city is upgrading the signalling devices and soon all these faults will be set right," he said.
REALITY CHECK
At Ramaswamy circle, pedestrians were sprinting across the JLB road because the time for them was 10 seconds. Not to speak about other points at the circle as pedestrian signal at three other points are not working. Same is the case at Shanthala junction as none of the pedestrians signalling devices are functioning.
At Basaveshwara circle, traffic signal planning is unscientific, as pedestrian crossing is on one side while signal light is at other point. The lights that were installed corresponding to zebra crossing have stopped functioning which is inconveniencing commuters.
At Krishnaraja Circle, two points -- one leading to New Sayyaji Rao road and other leading to Albert Victor road towards Palace -- pedestrian signals are not working while at the one leading up to Sayyaji Rao road it is not calibrated to the pedestrian density, though thousands visit Devaraja Market located on the other side of the junction. However, pedestrians are given adequate time (30 seconds) at Devaraja Urs road junction.

Now, protests to be held only in Gandhi Square
MYSORE: The Business community in the central business district (CBD) have reasons to cheer. Come March 1, protesters will not hit the city centre but will be assigned a place a la London. Like Hyde Park in London, the city's protest site will be Gandhi Square as the police commissioner Sunil Agarwal has designated it to be place to hold demonstrations and banned protest marches on Albert Victor and D Devaraj Urs roads. Agarwal, the city magistrate, has issued an order allotting an alternate route for protest rallies.
"This is a welcome decision. It will help us," said a businessman on Devaraj Urs road. "Every time there is a march through this stretch, we used to play safe and stand on guard given the violence during such rallies. Now, we can relax. Besides, it will decongest the arterial road and help the motorists," he told `The Times of India.'
For a decade the business community in the city centre have been upset with protesters marching through the city's main thoroughfares, saying it affected normal life. There are instances when customers have avoided the CBD during protests, M G Kumaraswamy, a businessman, said.
In the aftermath of the series of protests during the 108 days of abduction of Kannada thespian Rajkumar by slain brigand Veerappan in July 2000, there were demands to change the procession route. It was when P Manivannan was the deputy commissioner, he had identified Gandhi Square but it fell through.
Now, DC Harsh Gupta and corporation commissioner K S Raykar have taken it up again, which has led to an executive order banning the protests in the city centre, either at K R Circle or Town Hall, two of the city's protests hotspots. The top cop has attributed it to public safety and free flow of vehicular traffic. The move will also help to decongest the city centre but could choke Gandhi Square area.
* No protests at K R Circle and Town Hall
* Rallies banned on Devaraj Urs road
* Demonstrations to be allowed at Gandhi Square
* March allowed on alternate route
* Order to be effective from March 1

engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 08:44 PM Seven roads will undergo change under PPP to reduce power usage
MCC to switch over to LED bulbs (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/135169/mcc-switch-over-led-bulbs.html)
Sreekantswamy B Mysore, Feb 5, DHNS
With the looming power crisis, Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has made a timely move to save electricity by switching over to Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs.
It has decided to install the afore mentioned type of bulbs on public-private-partnership (PPP) model on seven thoroughfares here.
According to the programme, the successful bidder has to replace the existing sodium or metal allayed lamps on the said roads, each spread up to seven km, with LED lamps.
In return, initially, he will be getting the rights to rent or lease out the advertisement boards ( usually of 3x4 size seen fixed to every lamp posts) for a certain period, MCC Commissioner K S Raykar told Deccan Herald. The tender notification has been already issued.
The roads identified for the change are-Mahadevapura Road in Udayagiri, Shivaji Road in N R Mohalla, Command Area Development Authority (CADA) Road, a stretch of road from SP office to a temple leading to Gayathripuram to name a few, totalling about 200 lamps. The advantage here is the lED lamps will be having more lux (measure of amount of light produced) value.
The scenario
Another officer, on condition of anonymity said, in the present scenario, there are 58,000 streetlights in the city.
Among them 42,000 are tubelights, 11,000 sodium lamps and remaining metal allayed bulbs. As is the system, the streetlitghts are switched on for 11 hours from 6.30 pm to 5.30 am (sometimes depending on sunset and sunrise, switching on and off of the lights vary).
The bill per annum is calculated at about ` 8.65 crore. By switching over to LED, the cost may be cut down to about 50 pc to 60 pc, the officer exudes confidence.

engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 08:48 PM Pvt company adopts traffic junction
MYSORE: The Lions Club of Mysore West adopted a traffic junction at the KRS Road ring road junction in the city on Monday. This is the first time a private company is chipping in for maintenance of signal lights. After the adoption, the club would bear all maintenance like lawn, repair of signal lights, and road markings for a year. A gardener has been appointed to maintain the lawn at the traffic signal.
Club president Sudheer Shetty told TOI that the move was part of their service project. They have plans to develop the KRS Road between the traffic and Venkateshwara temple junction which are separated by 1.5 km into a traffic model road by roping in businessmen, he said.
ACP (traffic) Shankaregowda said the Lions Club entered into a pact with the company called CMS, which now looks after maintenance of all signal lights in the city. The new agreement will lessen the burden on traffic police as they need not pay for its maintenance, which costs about Rs 35,000 a year.
Two more traffic signal junctions-- Hunsur Road-Ring Road junction and Mysore-Bangalore road ring road junction-- will be given to private parties.[/B] MUDA has given its consent to the KRS road signal light, the ACP said. Meanwhile, the traffic police organized a traffic awareness programme for students of Lions School at Gokulam III stage.

engineer.akash April 3rd, 2011, 10:25 PM RAMAKRISHNANAGAR CIRCLE TO GET RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA STATUE
Mysore, Nov. 4 (RK&JP) - The wide expanse at the junction of Ramakrishnanagar, officially named as the Ramakrishna Nagar Circle, that has roads leading off to Kuvempunagar, Dattagalli, is all set to be developed on the lines of K.R. Circle, with the installation of the statue of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
A proposal to make this the second largest circle in the City with a royal superstructure that will house the statute of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, has been forwarded by Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to the State Government for approval.
The circle was unofficially referred to as 'Andolana circle' as that daily had put up a bus shelter there; and people began calling it so.
Sources in MUDA say that all the roads leading off from the circle will be widened considerably and two of them will have tree-lined medians dividing the road. Budget estimate for the project is at Rs. 3,40,42,000.
MUDA has also taken up the project of building a raised ornamental heritage superstructure, similar to the one that houses the statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, opposite the Palace.
The initiative to replicate the Nalwadi heritage with a statue of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was planned by MUDA Commissioner P.C. Jayanna with inputs from Superintending Engineer K. P. Shivakumar, Executive Engineer Veerabhadraiah, Zonal Officer (Zone 2) Gurupada Swamy and Secretary Vidya Kumari.
MUDA Executive Engineer T.K. Ravi, speaking to SOM, said that the superstructure will be in keeping with the heritage concept of the other similar superstructures in city.
Simultaneously, MUDA will also take up the ambitious project of introducing various modifications to the circle, further widening it and the development of a double road right up to Kanakadasa Nagar.
Ravi said that the work would encompass the construction and ornamentation of the Circle along with ornamental lights, landscaped lawn patches and stairs leading up to the statue.
Following the model of the Nalwadi statue, this superstructure will also be topped by a cupola with a small spire. The entire cost of constructing the superstructure etc. will cost MUDA around Rs. 93,73,269.
Ravi said that the construction of drains and widening of existing roads into a 24 metre double road will be done at an estimated cost is Rs. 2,44,68,087.
Concurrently, the various water supply works as well as landscaping and gardening would cost Rs. 2,75,000 while miscellaneous expenditure may amount to Rs. 17,822.
The circle, which will exceed some 55 metres in diameter, will have a footpath of 5.5 metres all round, broken only by the road leading off from the circle.
Road widening: Chaduranga Road — From the present 7.29 metres to 18.31 metres; Vishwa Manava double road — 21.75 metres to 34.54 metres; Udaya Ravi Road — 15 metres to 23.99 metres; Dattagalli 2nd Stage Main road — 8.5 metres to 18 metres and Dattagalli 3rd Stage main road — 20.52 metres to 34.15 metres.
According to the Executive Engineers of MUDA, there will be trees planted along the median of Dattagalli 3rd Stage main road and the Vishwa Manava Double road. There will be trees planted in addition to the existing trees on all the five roads. A bus bay is also proposed to be constructed a little away from the present bus shelter on Udaya Ravi road.
When asked about the possible date for the commencement of work, Ravi said that this would begin as soon as approval was received.

engineer.akash April 5th, 2011, 04:42 AM Delay in completing roadworks draws flak
Special Correspondent
There's lack of coordination among the agencies involved, says MGP
Officials promise to open KRS Road to traffic in 40 days
http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/05/images/2011040554160301.jpg
— PHOTO: M.A. SRIRAM
Inconvenience:The KRS Road in Mysore has been blocked for nearly a year to facilitate road expansion and relaying of pipes.
MYSORE: Consumer group Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has criticised the delay in completing civic works on KRS Road here.
The road has been blocked for nearly a year to facilitate the relaying of pipes under the railway bridge.
The group was also sceptical about the new promise of officials here that the work would be completed in 40 days.
KRS Road, which branches off from the railway station, is a key arterial road that connects Yadavgiri and Vontikoppal to the city. It has been blocked to facilitate road expansion and relaying of pipes, while the railway bridge was being realigned.
The work requires the coordination of the Public Works Department, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and the Railways for its speedy completion. The original deadline for its completion was Dasara 2010.
The Railway authorities said, in a release, that the target for completion of its share of work, set for February 2011, was delayed because of the temporary suspension of work. Construction on the railway bridge had since been completed, and the PWD was working on the underground drainage system and retention wall, the release added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta has instructed PWD and MCC officials to complete the roadworks before the onset of monsoon. Though he has reviewed the work and received assurances from different agencies that the road would be open to traffic in 40 days, the MGP has said this is unlikely.
‘Lack of coordination'
In a release here, R. Chandra Prakash and Bhamy V. Shenoy of the MGP claimed that there would be further delay as the corporation had not yet shifted the water pipeline.
Although the railway bridge was complete, the roadworks were still going on, they said. The roadworks were taken up under a tripartite Contributory Deposit Scheme, under which the Government, the Railways and the MCC were to contribute funds. However, there was lack of coordination among the agencies involved, the MGP alleged.
Funds not released
Besides, the State Government had not released funds while the MCC was facing financial problems, and hence could not pay the contractor to shift the pipelines. Meanwhile, the PWD did not take up the work as the pipeline had not been shifted, the MGP claimed.
Though the PWD has taken up the construction of the retaining walls, drains and cable conduits, the pace of work is not commensurate with the importance of this road, the MGP members added.

Mysore, Apr. 7 (KK&DM)- In the wake of ongoing 'Raja Marga' work on Albert Victor Road, the City Police have prohibited pedestrian and vehicular movement on the stretch between Hardinge Circle and Chamaraja Wadiyar Circle.
A press release issued by the City Police Commissioner's office said that the norm will be in place for 60 days effective from Apr. 11. Subsequently, the Police have drawn an alternative route for vehicular movement which is as follows:
The KSRTC buses, hitherto passing through Hardinge Circle and taking a turn towards Albert Victor Road to reach the City Bus Stand (CBS), should henceforth move straight upto Basaveshwara Circle to reach CBS and other destinations.
The other vehicles passing through Hardinge Circle too should follow suit and move southwards on Bangalore-Nilgiri (B.N. Road) passing through Gun House Circle, Basaveshwara Circle and New Sayyaji Rao Road to reach K.R. Circle and other destinations. However, there is no change in the route of KSRTC buses reaching CBS through Ashoka Road.

Mysore, Apr. 7 (KMC&RK)- Traffic movement along the road to Yadavagiri from the Highway Circle in city was partially disrupted due to a portion of the road passing under the Rail way Bridge getting blocked by a lorry that toppled to a side early this morning.
The DCM Toyota lorry (GDS-7937), over-loaded with raw wooden logs meant for firewood, was being driven by Sardar, from K.R. Nagar to Shanthinagar in city. The lorry belongs to Sar-dar’s father Wasim.
According to the V.V. Puram Traffic Police, the lorry driver, after manoeuvering the steep downward slope from the Yadavagiri Industrial Area side, lost control of the lorry as its front axle got cut, causing it to topple over to its right, after brushing the bridge wall. An injured Sardar was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital.
The Railway Police, with the help of V.V. Puram and N.R. Traffic Police personnel, diverted traffic coming from the Industrial Area side towards an alternate route through Yadavagiri, while the vehicles from Highway Circle side were allowed to ply as usual. The road block was cleared by 10.30 am after unloading the logs and removing the lorry.

As the name itself suggests it will be a 'Royal Road' in the heritage city of Mysore, tourists will really get a feeling of going back to around one hundred years ago. The first phase of work (between Hardinge Circle and K R Circle) is likely to be completed before this year's Dasara festival.
The road between Chamaraja Wadiyar Circle and Hardinge Circle is closed for next two months to expedite the works on Albert Victor Road. The involvement of various agencies had stymied the pace of the work.
The total distance of the marga will be 4.8 km. It starts from Hardinge Circle and ends at Millennium Circle. It passes through the heritage Chamaraja Wadiyar Circle, Krishnaraja Circle ( K R Circle), New Sayyaji Rao Road, Ayurveda College Circle, Bamboo Bazaar and Bannimantap Road.
This ambitious project has been taken out of ` 100 crore special grants to recreate history on at least one road in the city. Accordingly, the foundation stone for this project was laid by Urban Development Minister S Sureshkumar last year.
The highlights of this project are carved stone barricade, slabs to cover storm water drain, ornamental lamps and tiles. These depict royal days of the Wadiyars of Mysore.
This project, perhaps, is first of its kind as no other city has tried it. Panaji City had beautiful ornamental street lamps, but now they have been removed.
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) which has been implementing this project has rejected several proposals submitted by various consultants as they failed to match heritage.
Each and every work has to blend with the heritage of the city. Every care is being taken so that the beauty of the city is not affected. According to sources, efforts are made to complete the first phase of work up to K R Circle. That means- it would be ready during this year's Dasara festival. Like other projects, even this work too faced several problems. Initially, the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) declined to shift the underground insulated power cable at its cost.
But, it agreed after the senior officials of the MCC intervened. The mobile companies have been requested to shift the cables from the Albert Victor Road at the earliest. Another uniqueness of the project is that there will be no hanging wire on the entire stretch of Raja Marga. The total cost involved in this project is around 18.65 crore.
The sources said the amount earmarked for the project will be more for the first phase so that much amount would be spent on development of important circles like Hardinge Circle, Ayurvedic College Circle and Ramaswamy Circle. All those circles will be developed uniformally.

Mysore, Apr. 20 (HT&DV)- It is a new experience for the people of Mysore who used to see hoardings flanking the roadsides. We now see portraits of great personalities of Karnataka who have enriched Mysore city traditionally and culturally. The portraits in colour include among others Mysore Kings who have designed the city, Dewans, Asthan Vidwans, visionaries and great actors.
On Dewan's road at the heart of the city, there are about 20 portraits of Goddess Chamundeshwari Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Chamaraja Wadiyar X, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Rajamathe Kempa Nanjammanni, Dewan Mirza Ismail, Dr. Sir M. Visvesvaraya, poet Kuvempu, Asthan Vid. Devandrappa, Veene Seshanna, Dewan Rangacharlu, K. Sheshadri Iyer, violinist Chowdaiah, Bidaram Krishnappa, Kantharaj Urs, actors Dr. Raj Kumar, Dr. Vishnuvardhan, K.S. Ashwath and Swami Vivekananda, decorating the electric poles.
Corporator Chinni Ravi has arranged to display the 20 portraits on 10 poles at a cost of Rs. 3 lakh.
At a function held last evening, former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy unveiled the portraits by switching on the lights.
Talking later, Kumaraswamy said Chinni Ravi has become a model Corporator by providing all basic facilities to his Ward and lauded him for giving the road a heritage touch.

s.yogendra May 3rd, 2011, 08:44 PM MCC mantra: Dig up good roads to create ‘dirt tracks’
Shyam Sundar Vattam, Mysore, May 3, DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/158739/mcc-mantra-dig-up-good.html):
Wanted or not the authorities of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) have taken up the median work on Kantharaj Urs Road in Saraswathipuram in the city.
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/05/03/mysore-mcc-mantra.jpg
The road which was quite spacious is now being narrowed by putting up the median. The city of Mysore has quite a number of spacious roads thanks to the vision of rulers. They not only planted plants on both sides of these roads but also ensured that it was wide for easy movement of traffic.
However, the beauty of all these roads had been spoiled by the MCC authorities by putting up the median irrespective of the fact whether it was required or not. The latest in the list of casualty is the Kantharaj Urs Road in Saraswathipuram area. This road has been quite spacious and there was no complaint whatsoever about traffic congestion from the general public.
In fact, the vehicle riders are now experiencing hardship because of the new facility by the corporation authorities. The MCC has taken up the work of putting up the median from K G Koppal up to Fire Brigade Office.
It is not known whether the work has been taken up out of ` 100 crore special grant given by the chief minister or from the funds available under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (jnNURM) scheme.
All these days the vehicles were moving without any chaos. But now they will face problems once the median work is completed. The riders enter from wrong side if space is not given for left or right turn. The movement of vehicle will become further slow due to parking of vehicles on both the directions as well as stoppage of city buses.
The space between footpath and road is quite spacious and that portion is being used as parking of vehicles. As a result, scores of two-wheelers and four-wheelers are parked right on the road.
Besides, there are good number of trees that are providing shade to people. It is not known whether the MCC has taken up the median work to cut trees citing space crunch. The median put on several other roads has not given desired results except making them narrow and scope for traffic offense like entering from wrong side.
An engineer told Deccan Herald that the purpose of putting the median is to ensure free flow of vehicles in big cities where traffic is busy throughout the city. But it is certainly not required in the area like Saraswathipuram which is not busy all the time.
The median has more disadvantages than advantages as people have to go up the place where right or left turn is given. Basically, the median is best suited for state and highways to ensure lane discipline and overtaking the opposite vehicles in dangerous way.
None of the things are seen in the Saraswathipuram area. It is quite surprising why did the MCC take up such works that causes inconvenience to general public than benefiting them. This has given a feeling whether the corporation is taking up these works only to spend funds released by the government.
engineer.akash May 4th, 2011, 04:52 AM ^^It is good that they have put median lamps.Hope they do the same onbogadi road stretch.Mysore can boast of N number of 4 lane roads, thanks to the kings :) Some sense has finally prevailed over MCC.

s.yogendra May 7th, 2011, 08:42 PM K R S Road: One more broken promise
R Chandra Prakash and Dr Bhamy V Shenoy,Mysore, May 7, DHNS: (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/159764/k-r-s-road-one.html)
It was on March 30, 2011 that we saw Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raykar, JnNURM Executive Engineer Subbe Gowda, PWD Executive Engineer Cheluve Gowda, Divisional Railway Manager B B Verma, Railway EE Ravichandran, contractor K V Chennaiah and others were participating in a meeting at the top end of the gradient entrance of Medical College Ladies Hostel on K R S Road to sort out the problems plaguing this crucial road.
Ongoing works between Dasappa circle and Yadavagiri circle on KRS road in Mysore. Contractor Chennaiah and every other officer present said that the entire work will be completed in the next 40 days.
When the DC asked about the lighting works that was to be executed, again in unison, all and sundry assured that the work would be carried out within 40 days.
On May 6, with only four days remaining for the promised 40 days, we were greeted by heaps of mud, rubble, everywhere from VVWW till the new railway bridge. We found intermittently completed concrete retention wall works near Ladies’ Hostel side and very limited work on Railway Museum side. Concrete retention wall and the drainage works from the bridge till VVWW we think is not even 40 percent complete of the total requirement.
The concrete foundation for the road work, let alone the bitumen surfacing, on this side of the bridge in our estimate, is not even 30 percent complete of the total required work.
The works from Dasappa Circle to railway bridge is still at UG drainage man-hole construction stage.
The rainwater drainage work still need to be linked to the underground tunnel on the Babu Jagjivan Ram and Dasappa circle and incomplete on the Mandovi Motors side.
On this stretch of KRS Road concrete foundation work cannot be taken up till these UG manhole and the pipeline work as also the rainwater drainage works are complete.
There is also the fate of the three trees standing at the periphery of the newly expanded road work.
Two passages under newly constructed railway bridge are still filled with the high level mud on one side and effort to dislodge the strong stone wall of the old bridge right at the centre of the other side is going on.
The supervisor for the road and retention wall works put the entire blame for the delay squarely on the contractor in charge of water and UG drainage pipelines for not completing their part of the work.
He said that at least one side of the road work will be completed during next 30 days and traffic will be allowed on this stretch. Work on the other side will be taken up subsequent to this. This means that certainly the time required for completing both sides of the road will be more than the next two Months.
Supervisors working for the UG and Drainage works said they estimated this road will require at least two months for completion. Yet no one is talking about dividers, electric poles and lights; and planting of bushes and the trees!!
The promise to complete this road within 40 days has been blatantly broken. Looking at the pace of work, lack of coordination among the agencies and the missing top level constant supervision and intervention, this road will not see completion even during next 60 days.
It was a promise of all the agencies and the high level officers in a meeting held in public to none other than the deputy commissioner, the topmost bureaucrat of the district.
The moot question is - should not some-one be held accountable for such a casual approach to this crucial link road by our elected representatives?
engineer.akash May 8th, 2011, 08:06 AM ^^Highly irritating.

This ambitious project of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) that had been put on the back burner for over a year, will now be taken up under the Chief Minister's Rs. 100 crore Special Grant.
A work plan of Rs. 46 lakh has been prepared by the MCC. A sum of Rs. 5 lakh has been paid to the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CESC) for shifting the electricity poles along the roadside near the compound of Karanji lake.
Accordingly, some poles have already been shifted and branches of trees along the lake that would obstruct the electricity cables were lopped down by Forest Department personnel. They were prevented from carrying out their work by a group of environmentalists who objected to the lopping of tree branches.
Corporator Mahadevamma, Ananthu, Ravikumar, Subbanna, Harish, Yathiraj, Mahesh and others, who rushed to the spot, berated the environmentalists for preventing development work, which was in the interests of all. They also pointed out that only a few branches of trees were being severed instead of felling the trees. Tension prevailed for some time.
Hundreds of vehicles ply every day on this road leading to J.C. Nagar, Kurubarahalli, K.C. Nagar, Jockey Quarters, Siddharthanagar, Tavarekatte, Chamundi Hill and other residential areas. With the widening of Karanji Vihara Marga into a double road, traffic movement will be eased, said engineer Ravindra.

Thanks world8115,Mysore needs to learn a lot from other cities especially Chandigarh
Actually what is lacking is road marks. Road marks are imp for aesthetics. All state highways say roads wider than 2 lane width need to be road marked in middle... road marks more useful in night
They will soon mark the road,it was laid recently.By finishing I meant good signages, cat eyes, qulaity markings, even footpaths etc.
Atleast they can do this now in Mysore. With extensive construction in B'luru in recent years without proper planning made it difficult to maintain the charm
+1 the present Mysore is just like Bangalore in the 80's.

JNNURM to spend Rs. 39.45 crore on development works
MYSORE: The areas around the Town Hall and the Mysore Palace, identified as core heritage zone, will get a facelift under a project sponsored by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission(JNNURM). An amount of Rs. 39.45 crore will be spent for this purpose.
Minister for Medical Education S.A. Ramdas, who is also in charge of the district, laid the foundation stone for the works on Monday.
This is the first heritage development project being taken up under JNNURM, although Mysore was identified as a beneficiary city in view of its heritage value and tourist importance. The deadline is May 2012. The project is being implemented by the Department of Tourism through the Mysore City Corporation and has four components.
Under the first component, main roads leading to the Palace will be improved and the surroundings embellished to enhance its ambience at a cost of Rs.16.73 crore.
The project envisages widening of the existing road from 12.5 metres to 16 metres. The 1.65 km-long road around the Palace connecting Hardinge Circle, Gun House, Rachaiah Circle, and K.R.Circle will be covered under this component.
The embellishment work also includes installation of electricity poles, whose design will synchronize with the heritage ambience, laying of aesthetically designed pedestrian pathways, stone or steel railings along the pathway, designer signages, construction of toilets and drinking water facilities, creating metal benches or seating arrangements, incorporating classical designs among others.
The second component entails construction of tonga stands at nearly 20 places at an estimated cost of Rs.2.23 crore to give a fillip to the fledgling tongas, for which Mysore was renowned in the past. The third component entails embellishment of the Town Hall precincts and its surrounding areas at a cost of Rs.17.66 crore. This includes creating parking facilities at the basement, an open air theatre for cultural activities with a seating capacity of 1,000 people, landscaping of the entire area, development of the park, illumination, and rain water harvesting.
The fourth package will focus on improving the Town Hall interiors by replacing the chairs, reinforcing the structure, providing new and concealed lighting and improving the acoustics inside the auditorium.
The original plan was revised by the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee of the JNNURM. .

Free roads from traffic signals
Shyam Sundar Vattam
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/05/13/signal-250.jpg
The indiscriminate installation of traffic signal lights in almost all the junctions in the city is posing a serious inconvenience for the commuters. Signals have become an order of the day even on easy roads, finds Shyam Sundar Vattam
Automatic traffic signal lights are creating more problems than helping citizens in the city. In the name of streamlining traffic, the cops have put up traffic signal lights everywhere without examining whether they are required or not.
A majority of signal lights are located on the Jhansi Laxmibai Road. Hardly three circles are spared from installing signal lights on three km stretch from the junction of JLB Road-Nanjangud Road till Railway Station Circle.
Once there were hardly one or two traffic signal lights in the entire city. They were near K R Circle near New Sayyaji Rao Road and near the junction of Dhanvantari Road and New Sayyaji Rao Road. No doubt, the number of vehicles has increased by manifold but installing traffic signal lights without conducting proper scientific survey is totally ‘unwarranted’.
It is surprising to see traffic signal lights at Vedanta Hemmige Circle (popularly known as Ganesha Talkies Circle, near Gayatri Bhavan on Dhanvantari Road and also near Kukkarahalli Road as roads are wide enough for free movement of vehicles. No matter vehicles are there or not, drivers are forced to wait a minute or so for their turn to proceed further.
The one near the Gayatri Bhavan is not at all required considering the number of vehicles. The same in the case of Kukkarahalli Tank signal light too.
On JLB Road alone, there are signal lights at Vedanta Hemmige Circle, Ramaswamy Circle, MUDA Circle, Rotary School Circle, Hotel Metropole Circle and Dasappa Circle.
The circles that they have spared are Chamundi Puram Circle, Five lights Circle near Seth Mohandas Tulasidas Hospital and RTO Circle.
Once the signal lights are installed, the entire stretch of three km will be full of signal lights. The traffic constables switch on the lights and disappear leaving it to the drivers.
In the absence of cops the drivers jump signal lights without waiting for their turn.
The basic question here is whether so much of signal lights are required. Another question is why all the signal lights are located on JLB Road and not at other places.
Many drivers take parallel road of JLB Road to reach the railway station as there is not a single signal light on this stretch of road. It is observed that there will not be any chaos if the signal lights are switched off as all the vehicle drivers go without any problems. Problem is in store only if the signal lights are on.
Synchronised
The signal lights are not at all configured because of which the drivers are forced to wait near each signal lights for around two to two and a half minutes.
Although, one needs hardly eight to ten minutes to reach the Railway Station during odd hours, it is more than 15 minutes if the signal lights are on. But it has not been done so far. The cops are wrong if they think that mere installing of signal lights streamline traffic in the city. This number of signal lights may be required after some years when the city grows much larger.
A retired cop told City Herald that the signal lights should be installed only after taking into account certain parameters. It is a must if any place is accident-prone area.
Signal lights are absolutely not necessary in some places like Vedanta Hemmige Circle, Kukkarahalli Road Circle, near All India Institute of Speech and Hearing. But, it is required near old RMC Circle and Bannimantap Circle where the density of traffic is more.
I think JLB road needs traffic signals,it is by far the most used road of the city.Traffic signals is amust in Bannimantap area.
engineer.akash May 17th, 2011, 12:53 PM The beauty treatment will take time
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00630/14bgd_MYRKKHI-W004__630327e.jpg
For a city renowned as a tourist destination and with nearly 200 identified heritage structures, it is ironical that the first of the tourism and heritage development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) is being taken up at the fag end of the mission.
The JNNURM was launched in 2005 and Mysore was among the 63 urban centres initially identified as a beneficiary city and qualified for special grants and funding from the Union Government on the strengths of its heritage and tourism characteristics.
Of the 63 cities, Mysore was one of the 10 cities selected for renewal of urban heritage as it plays an important role in the socio-economic and cultural profile of the city. Hence a concept plan was conceived to suggest measures to utilise heritage and reshape and revitalise the economy and culture of Mysore. The thrust of the concept plan, as explained in the executive summary of the detailed project report, was to use heritage as an important leverage to improve the quality of life.
Slow beginning
Yet, despite the tall claims, it took the local authorities more than six years to conceive a project that was in tune with the City Development Plan submitted for JNNURM which delineated the “Vision” for the development of Mysore.
As the CDP noted, “Mysore aspires to be an international destination for cultural, spiritual, natural and religious tourism based on the history associated with the town, traditional cultural events and by retaining the historical character and conserving the built and natural heritage”.
But as the cliché goes, it is better late than never and with less than year to go for the deadline for all JNNURM projects in the country to terminate, the foundation stone was laid to improve the core heritage areas of Mysore last week. The project envisages an outlay of Rs.39.45 crore to give a facelift to the palace and its surroundings including Town Hall.
The project was conceived by the Department of Tourism and the Mysore City Corporation [MCC] is implementing it. As per the project details prepared by STUP Consultants, Bangalore, the key interventions in the conservation area are controlled parking, enhancement of public spaces, protection and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings and monuments, provision of street furniture, signage and information for tourists and presenting a unified image of the heritage precinct surrounding the palace.
Road widening
Under the project the roads circling the palace and the Fort will be widened and this includes the road starting from Hardinge Circle, around the southern gate of Palace till K.R.Circle. As such, a portion of the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road hugging the palace, the road in front of the main palace gate, the road behind Gun House till Rachaiah Circle covering both Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Circle and Basaveshwara Circle, and the stretch from Rachiah Circle to K.R.Circle will be widened and the footpaths improved and embellished for the benefit of pedestrians and tourists.
The selection of the stretch is important as it has several heritage structures including Amba Vilas Palace, Town Hall, Clock Tower, K.R. Circle, Chamaraja Circle, Gun House, Lansedown Building and Jaganmohan Palace, some of which are progressively being devalued due to overgrowth and congestion and hence an intervention is imperative.
The first stretch comprising a portion of the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road will have two carriageways separated by a median for the smooth movement of tongas for which Mysore is renowned, apart from providing information kiosks with telephone facilities, toilet blocks, seating arrangements along the signages, drinking water kiosks, food kiosks and dustbins at strategic locations. The second stretch opposite the main palace gate too will have similar facilities in addition to a platform for live craft display.
The third stretch of the road starting from Gun House to Shivaratri Rajendra Circle will have special lighting in addition to the above mentioned facilities. The fourth stretch will also incorporate the above elements.
Kiosks
The proposed kiosks will provide digital city information service, act like a normal information signpost with directions to places of interests and amenities and provide touch-screen city information and Internet services, according to the STUP project.
A key component of the project is the installation of heritage-styled designed lamp posts. The original plan entailed installing 132 lamp posts at a spacing of 35 metres each and the design of the lamp posts as also the barricades will be drawn after studying the classical patterns in the palace.
There will be a specially designed police control cabin while seating arrangements around the palace has been proposed and seats will be installed at a distance of every 60 metres all through the four stretches.
Another critical aspect of the project is enhancement of public spaces and it will include embellishing the pedestrian pathways around the palace.
The deadline for the completion of the project is May 2012 but given the pace of JNNURM works in the city, one is not sure when the work will end. It also remains to be seen if the earlier proposal to develop the squares and circles in the core heritage areas of Mysore on the lines of Paris city square will bear fruit. While the civic works will go a long way in beautifying the core zone, it also remains to be seen if the MCC has the will to ban the advertising and commercial hoardings in the region.
Amphitheatre
The second important component of the heritage revitalisation plan pertains to the development of Town Hall and its surrounding areas. The plan is to have an open air amphitheatre for performing arts, and create parking space in the basement to decongest the area surrounding Town Hall and Chamaraja Circle.
The improvement to Town Hall also includes enhancing the interiors of the auditorium, improving its acoustics and installation of an illumination system to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building.
While the Union Government has sanctioned the project and will contribute Rs.31.56 crore, the State Government will contribute Rs.3.945 crore and the Tourism Department, another Rs.3.945 crore.
The original plan submitted by the authorities was for Rs.64 crore but it was revised by the central sanctioning and monitoring committee of the JNNURM.

Guys what do you all think about this project? Road around the palace is set for a facelift. Are you expecting big or....? :P
I measured the distance around the palace it comes out to roughly 3 Km,The stretch from Hardinge circle to Chamrajendra wadiyar circle(Victor Albert road) is a part of 4.5 km Raja marga. So both the concepts(core heritage and raja marga) have clashed on this particular stretch.Need to see how they go about on that.
Note that Victor Albert road is set to have a median as it does not lie on the procession route.Don't you all think that a median in place would mar the beauty of this road???
Your thoughts on this please :P I am not able to distinguish between Raja Marga and Heritage core project when it comes to road sprucing.

Mysore has not seen traffic bottlenecks of a scale that demands flyovers or underpasses.City is pretty well planned with numerous parallel and perpendicular roads.Even during dasara when the traffic is at its peak due to influx of tourist vehicles, the city manages the traffic flow well.Flyovers and underpasses are sure an eyesore for this heritage city.

s.yogendra May 24th, 2011, 08:52 PM Bicycle track likely to see light of the day
Sreekantswamy B Mysore, May 24, DHNS
If you prefer cycling over driving or riding, your days ahead are going to be filled with excitement.
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) that had almost shelved ‘Bicycle track’ project owing to no takers for its proposal last year, has decided to infuse new life into it. Thanks to the recently concluded meet organised by ‘Indian Heritage Cities Network- Foundation’, in the city.
Lohia, Joint Secretary to the Department of Union Urban Land Transport, in his address, has asked the MCC to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on the project.
Following this, the civic body has begun preliminary study about the pros and cons of the intended facility.
An officer on condition of anonymity told Deccan Herald, the union government seems to be inclined on sponsoring the project. The local body will be the implementing agency ensuring dedicated lane and parking lots, while an outsider (successful bidder) will be entrusted with the task of its ‘Operation and Maintenance’. If all goes well, the DPR would be ready in a month.
The roads in the city coming under MCC limits are close to 1,700 km. When compared to the density of population, half of them - at least five lakh own either a two-wheeler, four wheeler or three-wheeler.
The carbon monoxide that emits from cars, owned by good number of people, adds to the environmental pollution. Most importantly, the soot that settles on the heritage structures here, may slowly wreak havoc on their beauty. Taking all this into cognisance, the city of palaces that boasts of good old structures, may be prone to danger in an alarmingly higher level in the future. Apart from advocating public transport, bicycle track will be ‘heritage friendly’.
Earlier, when the MCC had thought of it, under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), it was committed only for providing basic amenity like- parking space. The service provider had a huge burden, from investing (100 bicycles and 25 battery operated bikes) to maintenance, besides operation. The revenue generated from advertisements put up at the lots, will be shared among the bidder and MCC.
But, the project could not become a reality, as tenders invited for the purpose didn’t attract any bidders, for reasons best known to the authorities concerned. In the project that is being reworked, there are possibilities of the bicycles being rented out, apart from other aspects.

Hope that gets implemented,it has been on paper for a long time.MCC is not a professional body to handle such projects.

engineer.akash May 26th, 2011, 12:22 PM Woes: Mysore-Bangalore Road a sticky wicket for vehicle users
This drain work has been on forever
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/05/25/road.jpg
Gayathri V Raj Mysore, May 25, DHNS
Bangalore-Mysore road is one of the important landmarks of the city that connects the silicon city Bangalore with the heritage city Mysore. Thousands of buses, two-wheelers and four wheelers ply on this busy road everyday, even more so during the weekends and holidays.
Tourists who come from far off places to have a look at the mesmerising royal palaces and the mystical goddess Chamundeshwari will be in for a rude shock once their vehicle crosses the toll gate and enters the city.
The road which was partially closed to construct a storm water drain under JnNURM more than six months ago, remains in same condition till date as the works are progressing at snail’s pace.
The road is now constricted to not more than a few feet and an alternate route has been made next to it. Ironically, a huge tree standing right in the middle of this road acts as the road divider so that the vehicle riders coming from both the directions are forced to do some acrobatics to navigate through the road carefully.
Heavy rains that lashed the city during the wee hours on Wednesday had worsened the situation of already pathetic road -- and the road users, especially those riding two wheelers have to literally risk their lives before passing through the stretch, in order to avoid the slimy red soil, fearing their vehicle may skid anytime.
While works are underway at one side, another side is wide open with flowing drain water with only a few bamboo sticks offering namesake protection, thus inviting danger. The Fire brigade office is situated just few yards away from the storm water drain and St Joseph’s hospital is right behind the drain.
The most popular JSS Medical college and hospital and JSS College for Pharmacy is also situated on the same junction. The materials required for the construction works have also been dumped on the roadsides, which is again blocking the traffic since several months.
The JnNURM officials have a standard reply that the works would be completed as early as possible but the residents feel that the road work under progress is sure to stay for a long time. The officials may be relaxing thinking the fire brigade would swing into action if there are any casualties and the hospital right behind the drain would be ready to provide them treatment.
Funds under JnNURM
The storm water drain is being constructed under JnNURM at a cost of ` 40.4 crore. While the Government of India has sanctioned around ` 32 crore for the project, the Government of Karnataka will bear the remaining cost.

Mysore’s own leaning tower of Pisa!
Preethi Nagaraj Mysore, May 25, DHNS
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/05/25/signal.jpg
Locationwise, it is one of the most important roads in the city. It is adjacent to taluk office which is frequented by hundreds of people everyday. And, it is dotted with some of the premier educational institutions that stand to define the city today.
For instance, this road has Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, JSS Public School and Polytechnic College, Regional Institute of Education, acts as access road to the University of Mysore, and finally has All India Institute of Speech and Hearing at its other end. The road is also most travelled, what with its connectivity to Jayalakshmipuram from Bogadi and TK layout side.
With this, one may think the road, to say the least, may be decent enough for students and professionals to take. But one look, and you will realise the road is not only nobody’s child, and that barely any efforts have been made to even own it up as a responsibility that one owes to tax-paying citizens of the city.
The road turn is unscientific, narrow and with a sole traffic pole jutting out in the middle of the road, like a sore wound.
That apart, barely any authorities seem to have noticed the pole leaning dangerously on to one direction, and a policeman standing right below that, manning the traffic that’s in a tearing hurry to reach schools or colleges.
Making it difficult are the pot holes that are present ever so frequently, making driving or riding a rather acrobatic exercise. With schools set to reopen autos, vans and two wheelers passing by the stretch have no patience.
Monsoon is going to make matters worse with small puddles forming all over the place and muddy slush waiting to adorn someone’s dress.
Shopkeepers on the stretch don’t remember the last time when the road was asphalted. One trader even said he didn’t know whether the maintenance of this road was ever done by urban local bodies.
With a super market having opened little away from other end of the road, traffic is bound to increase manifold. It is time the authorities woke up from their slumber and did something for the sake of people.
DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/164069/mysores-own-leaning-tower-pisa.html)
MCC is just hopeless.
engineer.akash May 26th, 2011, 08:10 PM E-OPENING OF KRS ROAD STILL A DISTANT DREAM
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=28450&type=news
Mysore, May 26 (RK&DM)- The district administration's promise to re-open the stretch of KRS Road from Dasappa Circle to Vani Vilas Water Works on June 1 seems to be a distant possibility, with civic works taken up by different government departments yet to be completed.
The authorities, about 3 months ago, had promised reopening of traffic movement on the road from June 1.
Lack of co-ordination between PWD, VVWW, MCC and the Railways, which have taken up various civic works on this stretch, seems to be the main reason for the delay.
It may be recalled here that the stretch of road was closed for vehicular movement in March 2010 and the works commenced in May 2010.
Also, the stretch which has MMC&RI women's hostel, Ayur-veda College hostel, MMC&RI faculty quarters, nurses quarters etc., along side it, is poorly lit in the night on account of the ongoing works. Yester-day's heavy rains proved to be disastrous for Dr. C. Rajan, Professor of Medicine, MMC&RI, as he lost his balance while walking through the slushy mud under the cover of darkness and reportedly sustained a fracture in his leg.
As this busy road is closed, the density of vehicular traffic on Hunsur Road has increased manifold, thus causing a lot of problems for motorists and often resulting in road accidents.
It is high time the authorities realised the problems that have arisen out of the closure of KRS Road and expedite the works, thus paving the way for early re-opening of the stretch.

s.yogendra May 28th, 2011, 09:19 PM CCTV effect: 578 cases booked in 10 days
MYSORE: Over 550 cases of traffic violations have been booked in just 10 days after the city traffic police introduced CCTVs to ensure discipline on roads. As a result, traffic violators are likely to get notices at their doorsteps soon.
Cops are closely monitoring the vehicles on closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) installed at various junctions and are recording details of traffic offender's vehicle number, time and type of offence. Subsequently, address will be collected from the regional transport authority and notices will be served by a senior traffic officer.
"To start with, we are initially focusing on violations like signal jumping, using cellphone while driving, triple ridding, rash and negligent driving. So far we have registered 578 cases and will be issuing notices soon, said deputy commissioner of police (traffic) P Rajendra Prasad.
"We have a separate database on four-wheelers in the city and traffic violators who own four-wheelers will be issued notices within a day. Since we depend on the RTO for information on two-wheelers, notices cannot be issued immediately," he added.
Two assistant sub-inspectors have been deployed to record traffic violations at the city control room. These cops will also alert the jurisdiction police about any law and order problem

s.yogendra May 29th, 2011, 04:49 PM ROAD WIDENING TO EASE VEHICULAR TRAFFIC
Deputy Mayor Ravi Kumar is seen with Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal during an inspection of the road in front of Lansdowne building in city yesterday.
Mysore, May 29 (HT&DV)- Due to density of vehicles, pressure on vehicular traffic is increasing in city day by day. This is more so in small roads. The City Corporation has found a solution to this problem.
With regard to widening of small roads, a team of officers led by Deputy Mayor Ravi Kumar went on a padayatra to inspect the roads yesterday morning. The Dy. Mayor who arrived at Metropole Circle with the officers, went on a padayatra to the busy Shivarampet Road.
The vehicular traffic on this small road and parking problem has increased due to the existence of shops throughout the road. As a solution to this, the vast footpath will be shortened and the road widened. This will ease the vehicular traffic and also pave the way for parking, Ravi Kumar said.
He instructed the officers to widen the four-lane road from Ramaswamy Circle to Dasappa Circle and extend the road upto Babu Jagjivan Ram Circle near the Railway Station.
As a solution to control the vehicular traffic to D. Devaraj Urs Road from Maharaja Sanskrit Patashala via K.R. Circle, the Deputy Mayor suggested that provision should be made for the vehicles to enter Devaraj Urs Road via the road opposite Landsowne building evicting the encroachment.
Referring to the fact that the fruit vendors are affecting free movement of vehicles around the Chikka Gadiyara, he instructed the officers to provide a separate place for them.

s.yogendra May 31st, 2011, 01:03 PM 150 PETTY SHOPS EVICTED TO WIDEN ZOO ROAD
Mysore, May 31 (MTY&DM)- The Mysore City Corporation authorities, in continuance of their drive against encroachments, evicted nearly 150 petty shops including push carts, on the footpaths in front of the Mysore Zoo in Ittigegud this morning.
http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/4989/imageasp.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/806/imageasp.jpg/)
The eviction was carried out in the presence of MCC Zone 9 Assistant Commissioner Mahesh and other officials to widen the Zoo Road. More than 40 personnel took part in the drive.
The Corporation authorities had earlier served notice to the owners of petty shops for evacuation. As such, some of the owners themselves came forward to evacuate while the rest were evacuated by the authorities.
The MCC personnel also demolished the basement for a high mast construction right in front of the bus bay adjoining the Zoo, which had proved to be a hurdle for buses to pick up and drop passengers at the shelter.
Continuing with the eviction drive, the personnel demolished a flag mast erected alongside the road and unauthorised structures on a vacant site near Gandhivana junction close to Zoo.
Nazarbad Police led by Inspector Poovaiah and Devaraja Traffic Police provided tight security.

s.yogendra June 8th, 2011, 06:13 PM Roadside eateries mushrooming up in the city
TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Roadside-eateries-mushrooming-up-in-the-city/articleshow/8765565.cms)
MYSORE: One of the major problems many metropolitan and tier II cities like Mysore face is roadside eateries.
These eateries are akin to motels on highways, but they are situated in city areas. The mushrooming of roadside eateries during the past decade across Mysore city is causing many problems including traffic and pedestrian movement, not to mention its unhygienic condition.
Mohammed Thasin, a researcher, feels that traffic is affected very badly near commercial tax office on Krishna Vilas road and opposite Town Hall on Ashok road, where vendors have encroached a portion of the footpaths and roads to carry out their businesses from dusk to late night hours.
Of late, the eateries are also patronized by people. The only drawback about the eateries is its unhygienic set up. As most of it being run by EWS, they don't have a proper place to do business. The government has to step in and provide a space for them in the central business district, he says.
Hotel Owners' Association president M Rajendra told TOI that the increase in number of roadside eateries is having an adverse impact on small hoteliers who regularly pay tax to the government. But now many of them are on the verge of closing down their establishments due to lack of business.
One thing is clear that roadside eateries can't provide hygienic food and also evade tax, besides not having to be answerable to any authority, who lay dozens of conditions to businessmen to maintain standards, rate chart, hygienic etc, like hoteliers. Moreover, not all roadside vendors are poor as claimed by many of them, he said, adding that the government has to intervene in this matter.
But the civic body's promise to create a hawkers' zone in parts of city to facilitate the vendors is yet to be materialized.
Roadside eateries:

Ashoka road near Dufferin clock tower (Doddagadiyara)

Asphaltation work on Bogadi Road off Kukkarahalli lake begins
Mysore, June 15, DHNS
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/06/15/road.jpg
The citizens who were fed up with the bad Kukkarhalli Road can heave a sigh of relief. The Mysore City Corporation has taken up the asphaltation and widening of the road at a total cost of Rs 75 lakh. MLA Shankaralinge Gowda launched the works at a programme here on Wednesday.
About half a kilometre stretch of the road adjoining Kukkarhalli lake, also known as Bogadi main road, will be asphalted upto Vishwamanava double road.
This stretch of the road developed potholes regulary despite many asphaltations in the past due to the wet under land because of its proximity to Kukkarahalli lake. There was a long pending demand from the public for repair and quality asphaltation work on the road.
The work will be completed by July 2011, MLA Shankaralinge Gowda said after the launch of works.
About Rs 2.5 crore worth asphaltation works have been completed in the Chamaraja constituency. The stretch between Venkataramanaswamy temple to Ring Road on KRS road has been asphalted at a total cost of Rs 75 lakh, while stretch between Ayurvedic hospital to the Railway station has been re-asphalted at about Rs 35 lakh.
The stretch between suburban bus stand to Hardinge circle was asphalted at a cost of Rs 15 lakh in his constituency, the MLA disclosed.
In addition, Rs 35 lakh was spent on the stretch between Sayyaji Rao Road and Vigneshwara circle and Rs 15 lakhs on the road connecting suburban stand and the Hardinge circle. About Rs 20 lakh is spent on asphaltation between Hotel Sringar and RMC circle on Dewan’s Road.
Works in Kuvempunagar
Meanwhile, the Corporation has also taken up the asphaltation work on the stretch between Vivekanandanagara circle to the Brahmaramba circle at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. Deputy Commissioner of MCC Shankar and Corporator Pradeep Kumar launched the works on Monday.
While, the MCC has prepared an action plan expanding Adichunchanagiri Road and turn it into a double road. The work on the double-lane of the Road will begin in about 2-3 months, a release said.

s.yogendra June 20th, 2011, 08:18 PM Under bridge to take 50 more days to complete
MYSORE: As per former deputy commissioner Harsh Guptha's words, the ongoing under-bridge works on KRS Road should have been completed by the end of May. But going by the the speed of the works, it looks like the project will take at least 50 more days to complete.
Widening of the KRS bridge and road was taken up by the Railways in collaboration with the PWD and the MCC from June 1, 2010, with a target set to complete it in nine months. Due to temporary suspension of works during Dasara, the project could not be completed as scheduled by February 2011. The railway bridge work has since been completed and the remaining work relating to the underground drainage as well as retention wall are done by PWD and the work is in full swing.
Harsh Guptha carried out a review on March 30 along with the MCC commissioner, the divisional railway manager and the representatives of the PWD as well as MCC to assess the progress of the work. After inspection of the remaining work DC had instructed PWD and MCC officials to complete the road work latest by middle of May 2011 so that the road becomes available to the public before the onset of monsoon.
The UGD and water supply line work took more time to complete. The work will be completed in another 50 days, added Venkatesh, superintendent engineer, PWD. Due to monsoon, apart from the asphalting work the rest of work will be completed at the earliest, Venkatesh said.
According reliable sources from PWD the other reason in delay in work is due to Rs 3-crore pending from Railways to the contractor.
BB Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysore division, South Western Railway, said the work on our side is over there is some minor work which is being done on top of the bridge.

s.yogendra June 25th, 2011, 10:25 PM Traffic curbs on Chamundi Hills road
Restriction only on Fridays during Ashada, as a rush of devotees is expected
Mysore: The Minister in charge of Mysore district, S.A. Ramdas, has said that two-wheelers, autorickshaws and cars will not be allowed on the road leading to the Sri Chamundeshwari temple (at Chamundi Hills) on Fridays during the month of Ashada, which begins on July 2, in view of the rush to the temple by devotees.
Bus services
However, devotees could avail themselves of the bus services from the road down the Chamundi Hills to reach the temple, an official press release said here on Saturday.
Presiding over a meeting, Mr. Ramdas said that a heavy rush of devotees was expected from across the State on Ashada Fridays.
He instructed the officials concerned to take utmost care in providing all amenities to them.
Special efforts
Special efforts were needed to ensure security at the temple as well as to provide clean drinking water, sanitation and electricity, Mr. Ramdas told officials. Ambulances (108), along with doctors, would be deployed.
Dance and devotional music programmes would also be organised.
Counters selling tickets for entry into the temple for Rs. 20 and Rs. 100 would be opened on the occasion.

s.yogendra June 27th, 2011, 12:47 PM SIGNAL-FREE TRAFFIC MOVEMENT IN 8 CIRCLES ACROSS CITY
Mysore, June 27 (MTY&DM)- The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) in an attempt to find a lasting solution for traffic jams, which has often proved to be a headache for commuters, has come forward to introduce its ambitious plan of making eight circles in city, having high traffic density, signal-free for vehicular movement on the lines of Delhi's Rajpath.
The MCC which has identified eight circles across the city coming under its plan, is all set to invite tender for the same.
The 8 circles selected for the plan include Harding Circle, Ranapratap Circle, Somasundaram Circle, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, Shantaveri Gopalagowda Circle, T. Narasipura Road junction Circle close to Lalitha Mahal, SP Harikrishna Circle (SP office circle) and Government Guest House Circle.
Signal-free Circles do not mean that vehicles can move at will. But they can move without stopping at the Circle, on flyovers and underpasses to reach different roads, just like the Rajpath in Delhi.
The MCC, sensing traffic problems in future, particularly at a time when the city is seeing a rapid growth in population and traffic, has drawn its plan for ma-king these circles free on an experimental basis. The system will first be introduced at Harding Circle, for which Locus Architects has come up with a plan at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.359 crore.
The MCC has accepted the proposal and has directed the company to come up with a full fledged estimate, following which the tender process will be set in motion.

Bannur road,KRS road and if possible 6 lane Hunsur road which I know is a very difficult task especially near St Joseph's state school and CIIL.

PWD officer commits to date; Minister Ramdas inspects various works in City
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/07/01/ramdas-250.jpg
Different perspective: Minister S A Ramdas, Mayor Pushpalatha T B Chikkanna, MCC Commissioner K S Raykar, MUDA Chairman L Nagendra, Commissioner Dr C J Betsurmath inspecting heritage railings in Mysore on Friday. Here is a piece of good news for Mysoreans who were tired of looking at the ongoing works on KRS road through Akashvani junction. Though the road was closed for works over a year ago, it has seemed to last forever. The public works department (PWD) has agreed to finish the pending works at the earliest, and reopen the road for traffic on August 1.
Executive engineer of PWD, Basavarajaiah gave the commitment to finish the works by the time, answering to a question posed by Minister for Medical Educaton and District In-charge S A Ramdas at a meeting here on Friday.
The engineer also promised to hand over 57.48 km of road in their jurisdiction to MCC in a period of one month, after bringing the roads to order -- after carrying out an inspection by both PWD and MCC of the roads.
Roads
Superintending engineer of the city corporation Mahesh informed the meeting that the PWD authorities had formally communicated to the local body on June 17 about handing over of the roads and the corporation sent a missive to the office (PWD) here on June 25, asking the latter to let them know when will it be a reality.
It was also decided at the meeting that the MUDA will hand over 18 layouts to MCC in the first week of August.
Visits
Earlier in the day, the minister accompanied by a volley of officials both from MCC and MUDA inspected ‘Raja Marga’ works, Bannur Outer-Ring-Road project, houses being constructed for slum dwellers at second stage, Sathagally under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) and acquarium project near Karanji lake.
The officers explained the minister that barring Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (Cesc), cellular providers who have laid cables on ‘Raja Marga’ between Hardinge Circle and Chamaraja Wadiyar Circle have agreed to shift the same to other place.
The minister who spoke to Cesc MD P Boregowda over phone asked the latter to meet him at MCC where a meeting was scheduled after inspection.
However, the chief engineer Shanthi who represented the managing director initially was reluctant to shift the cable until the city corporation deposited shifting cost of Rs 1.58 crore. The minister was not ready to buy the words of the officer, who referred KERC norms to secure the cost.
Ramdas said he will have a word with the officers concerned, and instructed the engineer to finish the work within a week. About Bannur ring road junction, the works going at a snail’s pace due to delay in release of grants by the centre, the minister said they are mulling over extending the deadline to March next.
This was necessary to finish works with quality intact, he said.
Deadline
According to the earlier commitment, the work on 7.4 km six lane road connecting Mysore- Bangalore ring road junction, was expected to be completed by July 15.
Answering to a question on the lack of sand hampering the pace of ongoing works, the minister said that he will hold talks with the Deputy Commissioner to release the sand seized during the raids. The sand is meant to be auctioned and there is no harm in seeking the same for government works, he defended.
Bit of ‘Raja Marga’ by Dasara
For the forthcoming Dasara, Raja Marga is sure to be an added attraction but only up to a stretch. The works underway between Hardinge Circle and Statue Circle will be completed before festivities begin, according to the minister S A Ramdas.
It’s only after Dasara, the works will be resumed from Statue Circle to Ayurvedic Hospital Circle (Visvesvaraya Circle). Design of the railings that will be put on either side of Raja Marga has been finalised, keeping in line with overall heritage value of the city. The pillars are made in Chennai, said MCC Commissioner K S Raykar. The particular design can withstand any force unlike the one put up on an experimental basis, in front of Balbhavan in Bannimantap where the ‘Raja Marga’ ends.

s.yogendra July 2nd, 2011, 01:40 PM TREE AUTHORITY OKAYS TREE-FELLING TO WIDEN LALITHA MAHAL ROAD: MINISTER
Mysore, July 2 (KCU&KK)- The Tree Authority has finally given its green signal to fell the trees and take up widening work of the Lalitha Mahal Road.
This was disclosed by District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas who was gheraoed by Kuruba-rahalli residents near the Government School premises at Kurubarahalli Circle, during his padayatra this morning on the main thoroughfares of Siddartha Layout, to get first hand information of the inadequacies there.
They demanded that the road be widened by felling the avenue trees as several accidents had occurred on the road in the past.
"The City Corporation authorities would go through the legalities involved in tree-felling," he said, speaking to press persons.

s.yogendra July 3rd, 2011, 09:15 PM MCC will take up tree felling soon
District minister Ramdass has come out in support of felling 146 trees to widen Narasimharaja boulevard road. The minister during a visit to the area on Saturday said the Tree Court has permitted the MCC to fell trees on this stretch and accordingly MCC will take up the widening work under the Rs 100-crore grant given by the chief minister for the project.
This has raised many eyebrows as the Tree Court has not met in the recent past and the case pertaining to this is pending before a local court. On cross verification, TOI learnt that the court has directed both the parties to maintain status quo.
The statement of Ramdass has come as a shot in the arm for people who have been demanding felling of trees so as to give a facelift to the boulevard. This group includes a section of intellectuals and politicians among others.
Their contention is that felling of trees and widening road will ease traffic on Narasimharaja boulevard road, thereby benefitting tourists visiting Chamundi temple.
Environmentalists, on the other hand, contend that the road could be widened without felling trees. Their suggestion is to ease congestion by making separate lanes for two-wheelers, four-wheelers and pedestrians.
"How can the MCC take up tree felling when the matter is subjudice?" asks ACICM convenor Lakshman. Basically the Tree Court, constituted under provisions of the Karnataka State Tree Protection Act, has no powers to give permission to fell trees. Section 8 of the act states clearly that the Tree Court is meant to protect trees and not to give permissions to cut trees," he said.
He, along with some activists, is planning to file a criminal petition against the MCC and the minister.
Meanwhile, Tree Court chairman and city mayor Pusphalatha Chikkanna told TOI that the Tree Court had not met in the recent months and hence there was question of it granting permission to the MCC to fell trees. "I know this case is pending before the court of law and we have no powers to make a parallel hearing," she added.

s.yogendra July 5th, 2011, 01:34 PM 'RLYS. NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DELAY IN KRS ROAD WORK'
Mysore, July 5- The Divisional Railway Manager of South Western Railway (SWR), Mysore, has clarified that the Railways is not responsible for the delay in the work on KRS road-widening as well as expansion of the Railway bridge. It has been indicated in recent press releases that the work is held up for want of payment from Railways, which is not true, he added.
The work was taken up jointly by SWR, Public Works Department and Mysore City Corporation. The Executive Engineer of PWD requested for payment of Rs.4.97 crores on June 15. This is the first time that the PWD has demanded payment from SWR. In a cost-sharing project, the cost is shared by the two departments only after work is completed. However, since Railways did not want to delay commissioning on account of non-payment, the corrected due amount of Rs. 3.35 crore has been paid to the PWD on June 29, clarified the DRM.

Ramdas had announced about the decision of banning the plying of private vehicles two weeks ago, about which devotees from Mysore district and surroundings were aware; but the tourists and devotees from neighbouring States, who were ignorant about the novel arrangement of parking private vehicles at the Lalitha Mahal helipad and taking the KSRTC bus up to the temple, protested over not being allowed to drive up to the temple in their own vehicles. Language posed as a hurdle between the Police personnel and the tourists from neighbouring States.
Tourists coming from Tamil Nadu and Kerala via Nanjangud road, tried to take the Uthanahalli road as usual. Since this road was blocked, the Police directed them to drive up to the Helipad. They then drove via Jockey Quarters to take another route, but were stopped by the Police posted at the foot of the hill, diverting them to the helipad. Some obliged while others parked their vehicles near Tavarekatte and boarded the KSRTC buses.
All credit for the flawless arrangement must go the Police personnel, especially for those who were posted away from the sanctum sanctorum and thus deprived of timely food and refreshments.

pnvijoo July 15th, 2011, 04:42 PM CITY DRENCHES IN FIRST ASHADA RAIN
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4989/imageasp.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/96/imageasp.jpg/)
Mysore, July 15 (RK&KMC)- The city witnessed heavy rainfall last evening, the first of this Ashada season. The skies were dark with overhanging clouds since the morning itself and true to the Meteorological Department’s forecast, it did not rain but poured all over the city and surroundings, halting the day to day activities for a couple of hours.
Rain-water flooded the roads and the storm water drains overflowed, forcing motorists, especially two-wheeler riders to wait for the gushing waters to recede, though the rain had stopped an hour ago.
The rain that came during the peak hour made it difficult for the students on their way home from schools and colleges and also those returning from work.
Many low-lying areas of the city were inundated, with water gushing into huts in the slum areas. Rain-water had also collected in the Devaraja, Krishnaraja and Mandi Mohalla markets, disrupting trade activities. It was the same scenario at RMC and APMC yards too. Electricity supply was cut off for nearly an hour.
Though rain poured incessantly, there was no strong wind blowing and hence no instance of fallen trees, branches or electricity poles were reported in city.
Highest
The city recorded 50.10 mm rainfall yesterday. Total rainfall in the city since January 1, 2011 till date is 402.2 mm. Last year it was 464.4 mm by this date.
Forecast
According to Met Dept, rains are likely to occur in the next three days too.

AT LAST, SARASWATHIPURAM UNDERBRIDGE ROAD GETS REPAIRED
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=29012&type=news
Wrong design, poor quality work lead to this endemic problem
After witnessing the woes of the motorists following the heavy rains that lashed the city on Thursday last, the MCC authorities today began the repair of the otherwise unmotorable Saraswathipuram underbridge road. Picture shows Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna and Corporator Ninganna inspecting the concreting work on the stretch this morning. The road was temporarily blocked for vehicular traffic since this morning by erecting barricades.

REPAIR OF S'PURAM UNDERBRIDGE ROAD: TRAFFIC BANNED FOR 10 DAYS
Mysore, July 18 (KCU)- The Mysore City Corporation authorities have at last woken up to get the road under the bridge at Saraswathipuram in front of Fire Brigade repaired as it was frequently getting inundated during rains inconveniencing the motorists.
The road from Ekalavya Circle (near Maharaja's College Hostel) to Fire Brigade had innumerable potholes and craters forming cesspools and the gradient from either side was aiding inundation. Vehicle riders, especially on two-wheelers, had to do a herculean task to wade through knee-deep water.
Explaining the repairing process to the media, Zone 3 Assistant Commissioner Govindappa said "the underbridge was constructed by the Railways. The water drain channels have got clogged with accumulation of leaves and dust. MCC has taken up the work at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh and will allow free flow of accumulated water under the bridge."
Continuing, Govindappa said "owing to frequent inundation and heavy traffic flow, the concrete stretch of the road was badly damaged. Now it will be re-done with fresh concrete with iron re-inforcement and the surface will be raised by two inches. The vehicular traffic on the road will be banned for 10 days to facilitate the repair work and later re-opened."
Mayor Pushpalatha Chik-kanna, area Corporator Ninganna and other inspected the repair work yesterday.
Poor lighting
Meanwhile, the residents of the area have requested the MCC to improve the lighting on the road as only two bulbs have been functioning leaving the stretch of road dark and unsafe at night.
