Well its not fully complete, and you can not travel from Ravi bridge upto airport since they have blocked the main ring road at GT road interchange & Canal bank road Interchange! but I am sure that in a month or two this northern loop will be completed & then you can derectly go to airport from Ravi bridge!

Yeah I also used to travel through this route to go to airport! (though it was not complete) but after the completion of Package 6 & 7, they blocked main ring road from GT road interchange! and also if you travel from airport side towards canal bank road, then the point where package 7 starts(barki road intersection) , army has blocked the road completely & no one is allowed to go further from that point :bash: army has a camp there & for some security reasons that portion has been blocked

Looking at the current security situation in Pakistan...there is no way army will be removing this blockade anytime soon. Because that'll mean that anyone from outside lahore can come straight to defense, cannt and airport area.

And that just beats the whole point of making the ring road in first place...to allow ease of travel.

First time i have been to this thread, and this LRR looks amazing. I thought the only developement being done in Pakistan, was in Karachi. But this project looks bigger than any project in Karachi. truly amazing.

I was wondering how much work is left? And roughly how long is it going to take before its completed?

It is Pakistan's mega project since its going to set the stage for all major cities and some already have some sort of bypass's but nothing of this caliber.

Initially it was designed to be roughly 68KM but now it is suppose to be 114 km give or take with six lanes for main roads and then two lanes for each service road. It started in 2005 and most likely will take another 2 or 3 years to complete yet as it keep getting larger and modern in process of being built. My KM might be slightly off but indeed it is a mega project in Pakistan not just in Lahore. Next time you are in Lahore please take a drive on world class roads of Lahore.

They should plant eucalyptus trees along this road, especially where traffic is voluminous. They consume a lot of water, like the ones aligning the canal road, but produce a shit load of oxygen in exchange of CO and CO2. Also they live on average for about a 100 years. Whoever planted eucalyptus along canal road pulled off a genius deed.

Sure I will post a new map soon but let me tell you that since you have to go to Wapda town (or Johar town , Am I right?) and you want to go via canal bank road, for that you still need to wait another 2-3 months bro :) though ring road can b used to to canal bank road from airport, the road is partially carpeted , but its blocked by army near barki road intersection and they do not let anyone go further from that point.

I saw this report on TV.
I think its a stupid decision, given the amount of rainfall Lahore educes, which is much more than enough for the eucalyptus. And there are hardly any aquifer siphoning in the region. They are just letting a good amount of rain water go to waste. I can understand a ban on plantations along the Indus, Ravi (which is pretty much exsiccated), and Chenab, but all over Punjab is just ridiculous.

Plantation along canals and rivers are necessary as well due to salination of the land ... but still I would say we should find alternative plants like Neem etc.. instead of this.

The sooner we start caring for the environment the quicker we can curb this trend of not having low rain fall. The two strokes, low grade industrial production i.e, low quality steel production with high amounts of sulfur fumes combined with much road development spewing dust has created a very thick layer in the atmosphere over Lahore. The road construction dust is not all that bad with out fossil fuel mixed in there. So indeed trees, trees, trees are needed everywhere or we just plain run on very clean energy.

I'm all for more plants and such...however BPS is under the impression that we still get a lot of rain...I was just pointing that out.

Also, the problem just isn't in Lahore...its pretty much everywhere around Lahore that went to as well. One of the biggest problem I see is the quality of grass...the government seriously needs to import/create a new kind of grass that stays greener longer and firmly holds the soil together. That'll not only create more greener cities but will also eliminate dust from our atmosphere.

CM opens Ring Road packages 8, 9 today

Wednesday, April 21, 2010
By Our Correspondent

LAHORE

CHIEF Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif will inaugurate Package-8 and Package-9 of the Lahore Ring Road project on Wednesday (today).

The project will provide a signal-free corridor to the commuters which will streamline the flow of traffic in the City and result in saving time and fuel.

A segmental approach has been followed for the completion of the project as it was not possible to undertake the construction of the entire road in one go due to certain constraints.

The road from Harbanspura Canal Crossing to Airport Access Road has been constructed under Package-8 of the project. It has been completed at a cost of Rs 1,524.87 million and consists of a main carriageway, service roads, a flyover and a pedestrian bridge.

The work on Package-8 was initiated on January 15, 2009. An interchange at Harbanspura Canal Crossing has been constructed under Package-9.

It has been completed at a cost of Rs 2,264.88 million and consists of a main carriageway, a canal road, eight service roads, four bridges and two underpasses. The work on Package-9 of the project was started on February 2009.

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has inaugurated Lahore Ring Road Package-9 here on Wednesday.
This project is a gateway of Lahore which has been completed at a cost of Rs 2.26 billion in a record time. This important project will leave far reaching impacts on the development of the province. MNAs, MPAs, Project Director & Commissioner Lahore Khusro Pervez Khan, Sector Incharge National Logistics Cell Brig. Shahid Majeed and other senior officials were present on this occasion.
Talking to mediamen on this occasion, Shahbaz Sharif said Lahore Ring Road Project was planned by Nawaz Sharif and at that time, its estimated cost was only Rs 15 billion but now its cost had risen to Rs90 billion. He said no attention was paid to this important project during previous era and when we came into power, this project was presenting the scene of ruins. Property business was done in the name of this project.
He said now the tenure of plundering was over and no one would be allowed to usurp the rights of the people. He said those who looted the peoples’ money would be exposed.
The CM said corruption-free culture had been promoted again in the province after ten years and not only third party audit system had been made compulsory for all major development projects but timely and transparent completion of development projects had been ensured.
He said this had proved that we were the custodian of each penny of the people and all funds were being utilised for their welfare. He said a signal free route would be available to the Lahorites going from one place to another after completion of this project which would decrease the fuel expenses and save precious time of the citizens as well as smooth flow of traffic.
Shahbaz said horticulture was being promoted in the development projects and maximum tree plantation and land escaping were being carried out for making all development projects green and attractive.
He said the present development projects could be compared with any developed country and Sector Incharge NEC Brig Shahid Majeed, Project Director Khusro Pervez Khan and the entire team deserve appreciation for quality completion of this project.

Not quite - I'm more under the impression that Lahore does not siphon water tables, so ban on eucalyptus is just pointless. I could've understood the ban if the reasoning included aridity & ground water depletion, but if there is no ground water pumping going on, then all the rain water is just going to waste.

Like I said earlier....there is very little rain now as the weather has changed considerably. Also, ground water IS pumped throughtout the city for all water needs...we don't get water from ravi or any lake either. Thats why the underground water level is dropping fast in lahore.

http://www.nation.com.pk/uploads/news_image/large/EraoflootingplunderingoverShahbaz_11393.jpg

LAHORE - Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has said that those who looted national resources deserve stringent punishment for causing a huge loss to the national exchequer in the name of development projects. The era of former rulers was a period of loot and plunder, and the corrupt mafia with the help of unscrupulous elements in the government looted development funds mercilessly. He averred that the plunderers of the hard-earned money would realise the gravity of their crime when they would have to face imprisonment.
He expressed these views while talking to mediamen after his five-hour long visit to the Lahore Ring Road (LRR) project, says a handout issued here Sunday. Provincial Ministers Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Malik Nadeem Kamran, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Members National Assembly Mian Marghoob Ahmed, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Pervaiz Malik, Members Provincial Assembly Imran Nazir, Mehr Ishtiaq, Chairman Planning & Development Javaid Aslam, Sector Incharge NLC Brig Shahid Majeed, representatives of NESPAK and senior officers concerned were also present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister stated that the present leadership had put an end to the era of loot and misappropriation, adding that development resources were now being utilised for the welfare of the masses in a transparent manner. He deeply deplored the ruthless looting of national resources during the last regime, saying billions of rupees were minted through property business under the garb of LRR project.
He said that the 27-km long section of the Ring Road from Sagian Bridge to Allama Iqbal International Airport to be completed by June 30 would be a gift to the people. He added that his visit to the northern portion of Ring Road had revealed that extremely poor planning had been made from Babu Sabu Interchange to Niazi Chowk and even the demands of congested areas had been ignored. He directed that maximum overhead bridges for pedestrians, underpasses and elevated expressways should be constructed in this portion for facilitating the people of the area.

work on package-10 is going on at very slow pace. Service roads of package-8 are being carpetted. New project has also been initiated to make underpass in front of shad bagh area across ring road to facilitate tractor trolleys of local factories and cars of residents. The need of underpass was felt as there was huge gap between niazi chowk interchange & Mehmood booti interchange. Pace of work on package 11 is very fast. They have already made side loops. Also piling work is going at very high speed. The work is not visible from main Ghazi road. work on package-10 is going on at very slow pace. It is at least 500m inside the road, infront of metro store on opposite sideof the store. you can also see large no. of houses and big buildings demolished in the area. the area looks like a big ground.

Babu Sabu-Niazi Chowk elevated expressway okayed
Published: May 03, 2010

LAHORE - Punjab government has decided in principle to construct an elevated expressway from Babu Sabu Interchange to Niazi Chowk and the planning will soon be started.
Similarly, the improvement work of Kalma Chowk and Bhatta Chowk will also start shortly for providing better transport facilities to the masses and streamlining the flow of traffic while the process of provision of alternate routes and survey work is in progress expeditiously.
This was decided at a high level meeting presided over by Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, here on Sunday.
The meeting which reviewed the pace of work of various development projects lasted for more than three hours. Chairman Planning & Development, secretaries of Communication & Works and Irrigation departments, Commissioner Lahore Division, DG LDA, Sector Incharge National Logistic Cell, representatives of NESPAK and WASA and senior officers concerned were present.
Addressing the meeting, the CM said that all-out resources were being utilised for the speedy development of the province and provision of basic amenities to the masses and uplift projects worth billions of rupees were being executed expeditiously. He said that transparent utilisation of every penny of public money was being ensured and a high standard of construction work was being maintained which was comparable with any developed country.
He said that the important project of Lahore Ring Road was evolved by Quaid Pakistan Muslim League-N Muhammad Nawaz Sharif but after the toppling of his democratic government, this project was shelved and served only as a source of property business.

Does it really need to be all the way to Niazi Chowk? The Ring Road is complete from Niazi Chowk to Saggian Interchange, which was made specifically for the RR. Shouldn't the elevated expressway be from Babu Sabu to Saggian?

The area is much more populated between saggian interchange & niazi interchange. yes the ring road is complete from niazi chowk to saggian interchange but the planning was really poor. on both sides of ring road their is a mess of population & people do not use pedestrian bridges that are constructed every 800 meters. so it really gets dangerous to drive through that portion above 60 km/h .

@ Stonghearted

Then they should double the number of pedestrian bridges and make underpasses where necessary.

I've never driven on that section, so you're a better judge of the congestion. It just seems like if the money has already been spent on this section then its a HUGE waste of money to extend the elevated expressway that far (Its about 5 extra kilometers).

BTW nice pic. Which one is Abdullah Gul Interchange?

In developed countries almost all pedestrian bridges are made of concrete. How can you call these ugly when compared to the steel ones with ugly paint on them?

But this is how pedestrian bridges should look like:

they must make sure steel wire mesh fence with steel/conc. small columns half km in length under all pedestrian brides and public entrance areas so people must cross the highway through pedestrian bridges & avoid to cross the highway or walk between the highway directly like some previous pics captured people were walking on the highway. for example student of Punjab university new campus were demanding pedestrian bridge after the death of one student crossing the canal road hit by car but after when they got the bridge they r not using it.
these roads r according to future town planing & after some couple of years ll be full of cars. my dear when they will start p-11 left turn lrr towards phase VIII beside dha commercial Broadway there r some housing schemes at that same location what about to those residences like Divine Group (owner of Divine Gardens) housing projects there.

With the completion of the latest package of the Lahore Ring Road, you can traverse the northern parts of the city and get from the airport to Ravi Road in fifteen minutes. All is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.

I took the road from the airport last week and marvelled at the flashing countryside of Harbanspura, scowled at the hazy sky over the brick-kilns past Mominpur, held my breath past the landfill at Mehmood Booti and, before I knew it, was on Ravi Road, where the majestic Badhshahi Mosque greets travellers entering the city. Normally, through the city, this is at least an hour-long drive. With the Ring Road, it felt that I had travelled at Warp Speed. But all is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.

The Lahore Ring Road project was first conceived in 1984 as a bypass around the city that would ease congestion in the city. In the early 1990s, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) proposed a road loop encircling the entire city and the World Bank prepared a feasibility for a 60-kilometre ring road. Through the 90s and early part of this decade, the circumference and other aspects of the project designed remained in flux and, despite its groundbreaking in late 2004, continue to change. The original completion date of the project was December 2008 but construction on the southern loop, from the airport, through Defence, past Ferozepur Road to the Hudiyara Drain, the dusty little village of Halloki, Bahria Town and Thokar Niaz Beg is still underway.

The enormous affect of the newly opened packages of the Ring Road is immediately clear to anyone who uses it. The accessibility it provides brings hitherto unexplored parts of Lahore into reach. My first impression of the effect it had on adjacent property prices was confirmed, but for good reason. The entire eastern and northern flank of the city is now merely minutes away and new real-estate markets, commercial opportunities and potential industrial zones beckon. Once the southern loop is complete, yet more shall appear. There is no doubt of the awesome potential the Ring Road reveals. But all is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.

The obvious and awesome benefits of a Ring Road cannot be denied. But they do come at quite a cost. The NESPAK website states the 19 packages of the project will run $359 million. But depending on whom you ask, it may be as high $1.7 billion. It's difficult to quantify the returns the project will bring, but the homes, shops, retail centres, offices, factories the minds' eye conjures will certainly generate enough economy to make even this amount worthwhile.

But that's not the way Pakistani cities work. Back in the days the Ring Road project was being dreamed up, you could stand in (what is now) DHA's H-Block Market at night, face east and have nothing but fields between yourself and the glow coming from the lights in neighbouring Amritsar. Now, from that spot, you can go travel east to the fully inhabited Phases II, III and IV. If you venture further, you can drive past the newly constructed Phase V and the still-to-be-inhabited Phases VI and VII.

But the growth of this part of the city has been neither equitable nor environmentally friendly. It makes one wonder whether such development is even worth the name. The houses are for the minority elite, are automobile-dependent and energy-inefficient. There are no sidewalks for those who work in DHA but can't afford cars, while cyclists are routinely harassed and beggars simply not allowed by security staff manning the entry and exit points. Few other planned urban spaces–with the exception of Islamabad–are so unfriendly towards the poor. Yet the DHA is the standard that other private developers aspire to.

Driving along the northern loop of the Ring Road and past numerous villages and settlements, one asks oneself whether the markets and industrial zones that will sprout along the artery will benefit the current inhabitants of the areas. Will the billion of rupees spent on the six-lane road built next to their homes have a positive economic, social or environmental impact? Will their Town Municipal Authorities have the ability to provide the road, sanitation and other infrastructure that will make future residential, commercial or industrial activity feasible? Will there be schools and hospitals to ensure that a minimally respectable habitat exists for the next generation of Lahoris? Will there be parks? Will there be beauty?

Observing the contours of the urban planning path followed by Lahore, one can predict what will happen: The land mafia that has, according to word on "the street," already bought every parcel of land available, will monopolise the residential property market and will develop it at massive profit for the benefit of those few who can afford to invest in land. None of that profit will filter back into infrastructure development, the cost of which will therefore be borne by the local government with money either lent to us by foreign donors or raised by our taxes.

To build and lay down the infrastructure, the local or, more likely, provincial government will claim public purposes and exercise its right of eminent domain to displace families and scatter communities (as the Ring Road has done to the little community that once lived near the Harbanspura Pul). Thus, an economic and social disparity will be created between the people who live next to the Ring Road on the one hand and the people who benefit from the Ring Road, on the other. No, sir, when one drives down the newly constructed northern loop of the Lahore Ring Road, one can distinctly tell that all is changed, changed utterly and that a terrible beauty has been born.

That earlier Master Plan shows Ferozpur Road as a signal free corridor. This plan was proposed earlier, but it doesn't look like there is any movement on it yet. It would be great if it gets done. This is in addition to the Southern Loop of the LRR, so along with the signal free Canal, would criss-cross the ring road.

I think the target is to finish the northern loop first (which can take approx. two more years) and keep the design for the southern loop ready for construction by 2012.

Wht are you saying? northern loop will finish in minimum 2 years:uh: 70% of the northern loop is already completed! the remaining 30 % can be easily completed in this fiscal year if the pace of the works remains the same!

Finance minister wrong here. The total cost of project is more than 100 billion not 25 billion. i have read budget document from punjab govt website. They have allocarted Rs. 12 billion for ring road 4 b for nortern loop 8 billion for southern loop.

Rs. 25 billion is the cost of the Southern loop of LRR, not of whole LRR....

Rs 4bn set aside for Lahore Ring Road

The Punjab government has allocated Rs 4 billion for the Lahore Ring Road Project in the annual budget 2010-11.

According to budget docements, Rs 2,875 million will be spent on the ongoing schemes of LRR project, while Rs 1,125 million would be spent for new schemes.

The government estimated the 100 percent completion of LRR first phase (North Loop) consisted of over 43 KM road including nine interchanges during the fiscal year 2010-11.

The second phase (South Loop) would also be started in the coming fiscal year that would traverse a new corridor about 49 kilometre linking Ferozepur Road Interchange to Shahpur Interchange and finally connecting to the northern arc via Saggian Interchange for completing the peripheral loop.

The detailed feasibility and engineering design for the Southern Loop of LRR would be finalised during 2010-11.

Under the new schemes, Rs 200 million have been allocated for widening/improvement of road from Rehman Villas to Bhatta Chowk, Rs 150 million for intelligence system along LRR, Rs 100 million for fencing of LRR in congested urban areas, Rs 675 million for land acquisition for widening of Ghazi Road.

In his press conference yesterday, Mr. Kaira said that the northern loop to be completed by this year (which i doubt) and the work on southern loop is suspended for time being..
