taseer121 November 15th, 2010, 06:29 PM Great work Strong Hearted, and can u tell me the status of u/c sections of Ring Road?
ychaman November 15th, 2010, 06:51 PM Thanks to Waheed Ashraf for taking such wonderful photos and SH for finding them and posting them......you are the man.
Strong Hearted November 15th, 2010, 09:46 PM Great work Strong Hearted, and can u tell me the status of u/c sections of Ring Road?
Only 5 packages are U/C at the moment, p-11 Ghazi road interchange, p-14 carriage way b/w p-11 and p-15, p-15 DHA Interchange, p-16 carriage way b/w p-15 and p-17,p-17 interchagne near sui gas society! more than 60% work was completed last time when I visited these packages(2 months back), pace of work was and still is very slow, I dont see them being completed in next 6 -7 months where as the deadline is 31st dec!
ychaman November 15th, 2010, 11:47 PM At the same time landscaping work is beautiful, I still can not get the logic of planting palm trees in Lahore. They dont produce shade, wood or food for even squirrels. I know the British raj did that because they liked it for some reason. There are many domestic plants that would look beautiful and show colors in various seasons as well as provide shade, quality wood for furniture or even last for long time.........just cant figure out why throughout the country the palm and date trees are taking over. Anyone has thought about this?
oogabooga November 16th, 2010, 02:10 AM At the same time landscaping work is beautiful, I still can not get the logic of planting palm trees in Lahore. Because we have this inferiority complex and we try to imitate Arbeez. Ramzaan is all a sudden Rama-Dhaan, Namaz is all a sudden Salaaaaaaaaa and regular trees are all a sudden being taken over by palm trees. Can you say "retarded"?
ychaman November 16th, 2010, 02:58 AM You been around the block Ooga.......I know there are grown up Pakistanis like you out there but the ones running the system or controlling country's budgets need to see life beyond what could be imitated......ah someday may we walk free of constant influence.
brightside. November 16th, 2010, 04:50 AM They should plant my favorite type of tree there!
The Oak
http://www.blackburn.gov.uk/upload/img_400/Oak_tree.jpg
Lots of them!
ychaman November 16th, 2010, 06:04 AM I have thought of writing to Shabaz Sharif many times but not sure if it would get anywhere. Not sure how Oak would do in Lahore weather either.
Aadil.Aijaz November 16th, 2010, 07:31 AM I like Neem Trees.
http://www.supremacygames.net/RJSnews/2005_images/neem_tree.jpg
They're already pretty common here in Pakistan and I'd like to see more of them. I have very strong childhood memories attached to Neem Trees.
ychaman November 16th, 2010, 11:00 PM Could not agree with you more about Neem. Great medicinal properties, looks beautiful in the fall (yellow color leaves just like oak etc), looks beautiful in spring (purple blue or white flowers, good for shade during hot summers, perfect for Lahorie environment/climate, grows without much effort and things could be done medically or otherwise....the list just does not end.
We did not solve anything by talking about this but good to know, I am not alone in this thought and hopefully someone like us would get control of such things. Ameen.
oogabooga November 17th, 2010, 02:55 AM We need to find a tree that gives decent shade, doesnt deplete the underground water table, is very low maintenance and should ofcourse be cheap.
I propose a tree which is found in abundance here where I live, its called the ""Boogus terrainius growius biggus maximus lessus waterus cheapus" :colgate: As the name implies, it grows big, doesnt require much water and is quite cheap! Such a convenient name, gives you all the information you might require about the tree.
Heres what it looks like

Yes thats me enjoying the beautiful shade under the tree................yes thats a 5 o'clock shadow..............and yes I have lost weight thankyouverymuch.

Strong Hearted November 21st, 2010, 09:41 PM Work was on a halt due to eid holidays, but you can't say "no sign of work", work is going on but at a very slow pace, as usual there is a problem of payments to the contractartors and sub con's!

Ahmad Rashid Ahmad December 7th, 2010, 06:38 PM Korean Ambassador in Pakistan Choongjoo Choi met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at Chief Minister’s Secretariat here.
Talking to the Korean Ambassador, the Chief Minister said that Pakistan and Korea have longstanding trade and economic relations, however there is need to further strengthen these ties. He said that there are vast opportunities of investment and cooperation between Korea and Punjab in various sectors. He said that Korean company Daewoo had completed Motorway project in Punjab and Daewoo Bus Service is providing efficient transport facilities to the people of the province.
He said that another Korean company has expressed interest in rapid transit project in Lahore.
He said that provincial government is taking solid measure for the provision of modern transport facilities to the people. He said that northern loop of Ring Road has been completed in a highly transparent manner in the provincial metropolis which is a masterpiece of construction.
He said that now work on southern loop will be initiated. He said that Korea can extend cooperation in the construction of southern loop of Ring Road as well as other projects of infrastructure.

Strong Hearted December 17th, 2010, 12:37 PM Has the work on southern loop started and should LRR be linked with BRTS and Rail transit system
If you go through the previous pages then you will come to know that the southern loop will not be started in this fiscal year. And which BRTS and Rail transit system are you talking about, at the moment there is neither any brts nor any rail transit system in Lahore. If you are asking about the proposed LRMTS, then yes it has a line (I guess orange line) that is connected with the Airport Interchange of LRR.
asif86 December 17th, 2010, 06:20 PM If you go through the previous pages then you will come to know that the southern loop will not be started in this fiscal year.
Well were not 4 billion rupees allocated for the completion of on-going and new schemes for LRR during this fiscal budget

How many lanes it has? Is it dual way?

Maybe some civil engineer here could explain?

ychaman January 12th, 2011, 11:35 AM Haji Turbo, I am surprised with your question since your other location is Michigan. Living or having been to the US should help you not to ask such question. The overhead bridges and under passes are necessary for smooth and non stop traffic and high elevation of roads is needed to keep other traffic away since most of the R.R is near neighborhoods and towns and when driving at 70+ MPH you better have the distance from Pedestrians or even cattle's.

Work on new Ring Road loop could start in April
LAHORE: Construction work on the southern loop of the Lahore Ring Road (LRR) could start as early as April if the Punjab government can get funding from the Chinese government, The Express Tribune has learnt.
An official in the Project Management Unit (PMU) said that the provincial government is negotiating with the Chinese for funds for the project.
“We are hopeful that by April funding will be approved and then work can start immediately on the southern loop,” said the official.
Punjab government spokesman Senator Pervaiz Rasheed said various proposals for funding and construction of the road were under consideration. “The offers are being evaluated. Nothing has been finalised yet,” he said.
According to the feasibility study for the project, conducted by the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak), the 48.2-km southern loop of the Ring Road will cost some Rs27 billion to build.
Another Rs22 billion is needed for the acquisition of land, the PMU official said.
The project would involve the construction of a six-lane divided carriageway, interchanges, road bridges, reinforced earth abutments, overhead pedestrian bridges, culverts, sub-ways, underpasses, flyovers and related works.
The feasibility report divides the loop into four phases. Phase 1 is an 8.7-km section from the Sui Gas Society near Defence Housing Authority to Gajju Mata on Ferozepur Road; Phase 2 is a 13-km section from Gajju Mata to Adda Plot, Raiwind Road; Phase 3 is an 8-km section from Adda Plot to Marraka, Multan Road; and Phase 4 a 15-km section to Babu Sabu, from where the road will be linked to the Motorway. A 3.5-km link road from Babu Sabu to Gulshan-i-Ravi will also be constructed.
The southern loop will have six interchanges. The first will be at Gajju Mata, the second at Halloki, the third at Adda Plot, the fourth at Multan Road, the fifth at the Motorway link and the last at Babu Sabu near Gulshan-i-Ravi. At least 30 pedestrian subways are also to be built.
“The PMU will make sure that the project is completed within three years of its commencement,” said the PMU official.
The northern loop of the Ring Road, which is almost finished, will be able to accommodate 100,000 vehicles a day, he said.
He said no road project in Pakistan matched the quality of the Ring Road.
He said every society divided by the road had been provided with service lanes, pedestrian bridges and under passes.
He said the PMU had returned at least Rs16 billion to the Punjab government after land acquisition for the northern loop.

They will complete P-11(74% complete according to HCS on Jan 31st) & P-15(70% complete according to me on 9th Feb) at the end of March Inshallah & then they will start Southern loop. Three years period for southern loop is reasonable...
Northern loop includes Package 1 to 17...

J_Sultan February 16th, 2011, 05:46 PM i would suggest an infrastructure bond by the Govt. of Punjab that can be launched for people to invest in which can raise money for these projects...
Secondly an additional tax (very nominal) to be implemented in punjab could be like additional GST on all products sold here maybe 2-3% on everything, for infrastructure projects in punjab and lahore!! i am willing to pay that tax..!!

Yeah right! If the people of Punjab are anything like the people of Karachi (and I'm guessing they are) they will never pay the tax. Mustafa Kamal completely transformed Karachi and was probably the most honest administrator of Karachi since the pre-partition days. Yet when he tried to impose a very nominal tax (between Rs. 80 - Rs. 1000) on the citizenry for the upkeep of the infrastructure, he caused an uproar! Even staunch supporters of Mustafa Kamal were refusing to pay.
Pakistani's have a sense of entitlement unlike any other people anywhere else in the world.

Ofcourse the people of Punjab are like all other when it comes to Tax! Everyone here finds different ways with which they can either minimize or eliminate the tax. If the authorities decide to bring LRR under tax, I would definitly support this decision! The standard at which this road is being constructed, its no way that the road remains toll free forever!

Ahmad Rashid Ahmad April 12th, 2011, 08:51 PM China asked to invest in LRR
A delegation of Xinjiang Beixin Road & Bridge Construction Company of China, led by its Chief Operating Officer Zhaomingshang, called on Shahbaz Sharif at the CM’s Secretariat here on Monday and exchanged views with regard to cooperation in infrastructure sector in Punjab.
Talking to the delegation, the CM Shahbaz Sharif said asked the Chinese company to consider cooperation in the project of Southern loop of the Lahore Ring Road, and Secretary C&W Department should give detailed briefing to the Chinese delegation in this regard.
The delegation said they had visited Northern loop of the LRR and had been greatly impressed due to quality and best construction of the project. “We will consider cooperation in the construction of Southern loop of the Road.
Our company has already completed four different projects in Pakistan and is working on a number of projects.”
Metropole April 13th, 2011, 05:33 AM ^^ Are they going to make it a toll road? How else will the Chinese recover their money if they invest in the LRR?
And does it mean that they don't have money to complete the road if they're asking the Chinese to invest?

Yes at the moment it is funds that is a problem for southern loop, construction work was supposed to kick off this month but no news so far, it seems that it won't be possible in current fiscal year, next budget will give us a clear picture about the fate of southern loop.
This should have been a toll road but its not possible at the moment because of some poor planing involved in some packages of Northern loop(P-2 specially), but if chinese do invest in southern loop, then it definitely would be on BOT basis, and it might be a toll road after completion then.

Thnxs Dear :)
Ahmad Rashid Ahmad April 15th, 2011, 01:15 AM The Punjab government on Monday handed over four new cars equipped with modern gadgets to the Lahore City Traffic Police for round-the-clock patrolling on Ring Road.
The patrolling is being launched from Tuesday (today) in three shifts on three sectors of Ring Road and drivers for these cars have been imparted special training.
At an inaugural ceremony, MNA Hamza Shahbaz handed over keys to the traffic police highups.
It was informed during the ceremony that each car comprised first-aid box, traffic cons, electric rods and public address system aimed at delivering traffic education to road users.
Chief Traffic Officer Ahmad Mobeen said special funds had been allocated for the maintenance of the cars.
City Traffic Police SSP (headquarters) Sohail Chaudhry told Dawn after the traffic police had formally got control over the Ring Road between Babu Sabu and Lahore airport around three months ago, a proposal was forwarded to the government to ply latest patrolling cars on the pattern of Motorway police.

khalid-don April 23rd, 2011, 06:58 PM Lahore Ring Road Completion
With the completion of the latest package of the Lahore Ring Road, you can traverse the northern parts of the city and get from the airport to Ravi Road in fifteen minutes. All is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.
I took the road from the airport last week and marvelled at the flashing countryside of Harbanspura, scowled at the hazy sky over the brick-kilns past Mominpur, held my breath past the landfill at Mehmood Booti and, before I knew it, was on Ravi Road, where the majestic Badhshahi Mosque greets travellers entering the city. Normally, through the city, this is at least an hour-long drive. With the Ring Road, it felt that I had travelled at Warp Speed. But all is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.
The Lahore Ring Road project was first conceived in 1984 as a bypass around the city that would ease congestion in the city. In the early 1990s, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) proposed a road loop encircling the entire city and the World Bank prepared a feasibility for a 60-kilometre ring road. Through the 90s and early part of this decade, the circumference and other aspects of the project designed remained in flux and, despite its groundbreaking in late 2004, continue to change. The original completion date of the project was December 2008 but construction on the southern loop, from the airport, through Defence, past Ferozepur Road to the Hudiyara Drain, the dusty little village of Halloki, Bahria Town and Thokar Niaz Beg is still underway.
The enormous affect of the newly opened packages of the Ring Road is immediately clear to anyone who uses it. The accessibility it provides brings hitherto unexplored parts of Lahore into reach. My first impression of the effect it had on adjacent property prices was confirmed, but for good reason. The entire eastern and northern flank of the city is now merely minutes away and new real-estate markets, commercial opportunities and potential industrial zones beckon. Once the southern loop is complete, yet more shall appear. There is no doubt of the awesome potential the Ring Road reveals. But all is changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.
The obvious and awesome benefits of a Ring Road cannot be denied. But they do come at quite a cost. The NESPAK website states the 19 packages of the project will run $359 million. But depending on whom you ask, it may be as high $1.7 billion. It’s difficult to quantify the returns the project will bring, but the homes, shops, retail centres, offices, factories the minds’ eye conjures will certainly generate enough economy to make even this amount worthwhile.
But that’s not the way Pakistani cities work. Back in the days the Ring Road project was being dreamed up, you could stand in (what is now) DHA’s H-Block Market at night, face east and have nothing but fields between yourself and the glow coming from the lights in neighbouring Amritsar. Now, from that spot, you can go travel east to the fully inhabited Phases II, III and IV. If you venture further, you can drive past the newly constructed Phase V and the still-to-be-inhabited Phases VI and VII.
But the growth of this part of the city has been neither equitable nor environmentally friendly. It makes one wonder whether such development is even worth the name. The houses are for the minority elite, are automobile-dependent and energy-inefficient. There are no sidewalks for those who work in DHA but can’t afford cars, while cyclists are routinely harassed and beggars simply not allowed by security staff manning the entry and exit points. Few other planned urban spaces–with the exception of Islamabad–are so unfriendly towards the poor. Yet the DHA is the standard that other private developers aspire to.
Driving along the northern loop of the Ring Road and past numerous villages and settlements, one asks oneself whether the markets and industrial zones that will sprout along the artery will benefit the current inhabitants of the areas. Will the billion of rupees spent on the six-lane road built next to their homes have a positive economic, social or environmental impact? Will their Town Municipal Authorities have the ability to provide the road, sanitation and other infrastructure that will make future residential, commercial or industrial activity feasible? Will there be schools and hospitals to ensure that a minimally respectable habitat exists for the next generation of Lahoris? Will there be parks? Will there be beauty?
Observing the contours of the urban planning path followed by Lahore, one can predict what will happen: The land mafia that has, according to word on “the street,” already bought every parcel of land available, will monopolise the residential property market and will develop it at massive profit for the benefit of those few who can afford to invest in land. None of that profit will filter back into infrastructure development, the cost of which will therefore be borne by the local government with money either lent to us by foreign donors or raised by our taxes.
To build and lay down the infrastructure, the local or, more likely, provincial government will claim public purposes and exercise its right of eminent domain to displace families and scatter communities (as the Ring Road has done to the little community that once lived near the Harbanspura Pul). Thus, an economic and social disparity will be created between the people who live next to the Ring Road on the one hand and the people who benefit from the Ring Road, on the other. No, sir, when one drives down the newly constructed northern loop of the Lahore Ring Road, one can distinctly tell that all is changed, changed utterly and that a terrible beauty has been born.
Postscript: My column last week regarding the Lahore High Court’s Facebook ban received more responses than any other. The furore over the immature and highly irresponsible act of provocation has passed and has revealed several interesting things. First, our collective method of responding to blasphemy has become more sophisticated. I’m not saying that banning Wikipedia is a sophisticated thing to do. But it is better than attacking the American embassy in Islamabad (in response to Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses), a cinema in Peshawar (in response to a letter published in The Frontier Post), an MCB (the first Jyllands-Posten cartoon saga).
The international condemnation of violence to express displeasure was so overwhelming that, when the second Jyllands-Posten sage occurred, some people in Lahore put their money where their mouths were and paid for billboards that stated they peacefully protested blasphemy. With the Facebook Shame, had it not been for the Lahore High Court’s prohibition and the overeager enforcement by the PTA, protests were peaceful and, what is more, well-thought-out and -argued. The response and evolution of protests against blasphemy are getting better and may, one hopes, one day win the debate.

Welcome to Mehfil Pakistan!
i plan on buying a plot in DHA phase 6 very soon...what is the latest progress of the Ring road on a whole?
Buy a plot in phase 6 as soon as possible since the prices are going up in this phase.
Work on Northern loop of Lahore ring road is 90% complete, only few packages left that will be completed by the end of May hopefully!
How many phases of ring road are complete and how far is the nearest intersection from DHA phase 6?
Package 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,12,13 are 100% complete, Package 11,14,16,16,17 will be completed very soon
Phase 6 is very very close to ring road interchange, the interchange is located itself in dha phase 6 at the intersection of phase5 and phase6 at bedian road
Also what about the progress of the ring road from defence to Thokar Niaz Baig Motorway Interchange?
Its the southern loop that you are asking about, work was supposed to start this month but new latest news yet!
Finally i want to ask that what is the latest news about the widening of the canal road from Thokar Niaz Baig to Kalma Chowk side? And the latest news about Kalma Chowk Flyover, from where to where will it be built? If anyone would be kind enough to answer my questions in detail i would really appreciate it Take care,AllahAfiz!!!
Canal road has been recarpeted but it cant be widened at the moment because of pathetic NGO that has filed a case in lahore highcourt against the project, Kalma chowk flyover is u/c at a very good pace, flyover is located at ferozpur road 500 meters both sides of kalma chowk

Yes Lahore bachao tehreek!
Gumnaam April 27th, 2011, 07:59 PM This is getting out of hand now, we really need to get rid of Lahore Bachao Tehreek to save Lahore.
Is there any way we can put this NGO on the list of terrorist organizations and ban it for good forever?
Really sick of NGOs. These are doing more harm than good. Their funding and finances should be checked and monitored regularly. No direct funding should be allowed by donors to these NGOs, outside funding must be either channeled through the govt or no outside funding allowed.

you really expect THIS government to do that? a good government will normally watch inflow to the NGO's and stop it if it is deemed to be detrimental to national interest (i know for a fact that was the case before 2007). i dont know what this government has been doing except jerking off.
shakeelahmadch April 29th, 2011, 12:11 AM ^^ lol .. the NGO sector went out of hand in Mush area .. I know it for more than a fact too. Know too many families around my area who just made millions out of NGO businesses (and still are making) etc... nobody kept a check at any point and still no body cares since all these people developed direct contacts in embassies and it's a pure federal subject. The less said the better, it'll go very political, which kills the purpose of this thread.

friendbest123 May 1st, 2011, 12:44 PM Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated Shad Bagh underpass on Ring Road early on Sunday.
The chief minster ordered the authorities concerned to complete the construction of Multan Road by May 31st.
The Lahore commissioner briefed the chief minister about the maintenance work at Multan Road and its opening for general traffic. The chief minister ordered that maximum space should be given to green belts at both sides of the road.
Talking to the media, Shahbaz said that the timely completion of maintenance work on Multan Road was difficult due to encroachments.

Funds are already available for land acquisition of Southern Loop, which is always a major phase of the project and time consuming as well. Land Acquisition has been started on fast track so at the time of awarding work to the contractors sufficients land will be made available for construction work
