This sounds like you have not brought up your densities.

I have actually brought up a medium sized city all the way up to 350,000, but soon after it tops out at about 325,000.

ive got a 2 x 2 city with 460,000 people, and it's full of towers, but it took me many days of playing to get to it.

as a suggestion try to redevelop areas into "grids" of 4 x 4 lots, it supports more people.

Actually I think you'll get a denser city with 6x6 zoning. That makes room for four 3x3 lots in a square. Atleast that has worked very well in my cities lately.

Here's an example of 6x6 from one of my cities (Note: not all 3x3 lots are zoned with high density):

^^Yep, 6 x 6 works well

6x6? that's for the small minded...

go for something like 11x6; you've then got plenty of room for parks and mass transit to go w/in those grids.

i prefer the 4 sets of 4 x 4 with roads surrounding it.

How did you do that...my population has rwached 45k and I am zoning high density already.. Dun tellll me that you reached 325k just with medium density.. :eek2:

make sure you got :
-demand for it [slums can house MANY people]
-neighbour connections, more conenctions the better.
-parks! MANY OF THEM
-education , no need to be full coverage
-hospitals
-good / fair road system.

mlm, yeah 3 x 3 is good for medium density, but when better towers like Ong condos, twin peak towers, zadi apartments and most 3 x 3 lots will grow too.

Are subways really a big help in commute time, does it reduce congestion and does it help much in city growth...?

Subways can really help in reducing your commute times, if used correctly.
You could for example use them to get people that work in congested areas faster from their home to their work, without the congestion (except when the subway gets congested as well ;)) I have experienced the use of subways very helpful in reducing the traffic on my roads.

just for note, i've got a medium sized city with a population of 720,000. of course though, it's a residential-mostly "suburb" of a large city w/2.2 million.

how? lots of parks, and squares of like 10x8...and lots of residential zones for dense towers of 4x4.

No not with medium density alone. I was talking about a medium sized city with maybe 80% high and 20% low.

If you take a long time and put subways in, they will eventually start paying for themselves (maintnence). When that starts to happen, your city gets filled with highrises so close they begin to look like they are touching.
