Dairy Farmers rocks as Cowboys beat Broncos

18 September 2004

North Queensland went into full scale party mode after the Cowboys put a defensive vice on Brisbane to win their NRL semi-final blockbuster 10-0 at a delirious Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Playing as if their lives depended on it, the Cowboys refused to let Brisbane cross their line in a magnificent defensive effort of grand final proportions.

The confident Cowboys, who had won five of their last seven games, fed off an electrified crowd of 24,989 fans who cheered every tackle and every metre made by their heroes.

Five-eight David Myles scored the only try of the match off a deft Matt Bowen grubber but he needed the green light from video referees Graeme West and Mick Stone.

Centre Josh Hannay kicked three goals to complete the 10-0 shut out.

Cowboys halfback Nathan Fien, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, continued his wonderful late season form while Bowen had the big crowd up on their feet with each touch of the football.

Again the Cowboys' no frills pack served it up to Brisbane, prop Paul Rauhihi's off-loads causing Brisbane no end of headaches.

The game started dramatically when Broncos captain Gorden Tallis, born in Townsville, failed to take the field.

Darren Lockyer led Brisbane onto the field with Tallis heading straight to the bench.

Tallis then headed back down the tunnel to the dressing room for some treatment even before the game kicked off.

NRL officials will seek an official explanation from the Broncos on Monday because they were not notified of any change to Brisbane's starting side before the game kicked off.

Later in the game Brisbane prop Shane Webcke appeared to indicate he had been bitten when tackling Fien.

When asked by referee Tim Mander if he was making a complaint, Webcke said "no".

The game was played at a cracking pace, flowing from one end of the ground to the other.

Giant Brisbane winger Gary Tupou almost put Brisbane back in the game when put away down the left hand flank before a magnificent diving cover tackle by Fien put him into touch.

Tupou went close to scoring early in the second half before five Cowboy defenders smashed him and took him over the line.

Tonight's win was the Cowboys' first victory in 17 meetings with Brisbane since 1995 and they now pose a serious threat to the Sydney Roosters' premiership aspirations.

The win followed a week in which the city went loco, fans snapping up 25,000 tickets in three hours on Tuesday and booking out every available bed to be found.

They rode the hype again like a big wave and the roar when the full time siren sounded was deafening.

^The Broncs are my first team but I wanted my second, the cowboys to win. They are in much better form than the Broncs. They can cause an upset and make the big day.

How awesome would that be?

A well deserved win. Brisbane just kept making errors and lost too many opportunities to get on the board.

Don't count your chickens (no pun intended!!) before they hatch CULWULLA, remember, nobody expected the Cowboys to beat the Bulldogs.......... Roosters aren't invincable. As they showed last year in the grand final. Bring it on, The Cowboys won't be overawed by a bunch of chickens.... Haha :) Just on the Cowboys v Broncos match, i did want the Broncos to win as they are my first team, but i'm still happy to see the Cowboys still in the comp, they now become my number 1 team with the Broncos out. GO COWBOYS!!
