SOLWEZI Town Clerk Jim Zya says the construction of the new Solwezi town has commenced, with South Africa’s construction company Africana expected to build 500 houses, shops and schools.

MrZya said in an interview in Solwezi on April 5 that the new Solwezi town will be located between the turn-off in Chief Kapijimpanga’s area and the old Chingola road, about three kilometres from Solwezi.

Mr Zya said Africana will construct high quality houses and highrise flats, a replica of some apartments in South Africa.

He also disclosed that apart from Africana constructing houses for the new Solwezi town, the commissioner of lands has also reserved land for the construction of satellite towns.

He said the National Housing Authority and NAPSA will each construct 100 houses, while another 8,000 houses will be built in satellite towns under the Private Public Partnership (PPP).

“We have also reserved land for the council to construct 100 houses to be rented out to the public,” he said.

Mr Zya said the new Solwezi town is expected to be completed by 2015.

He also said the construction of the first shopping mall in the province will commence as soon as the council completes relocating the old show ground to a new site.

Zambia: K75 Billion Staked for Solwezi Mall

HERRIOT Properties of South Africa will develop an ultra-modern shopping mall in Solwezi, North-Western Province, after being awarded the entire show-grounds premises, town clerk Ronald Daka has confirmed.

Mr Daka said in an interview that Solwezi Municipal Council had already awarded Herriot Properties the show-grounds to start construction of the first shopping mall in the province at an estimated value of US$25 million (approximately K75 billion).

He said the council had worked out the compensation to be given to current occupiers of the Solwezi Show-grounds who would be relocated to Mitukutuku area.

"The process has been concluded and I can confirm that Herriot Properties of South Africa will build a shopping mall at the Solwezi show-grounds. They have already been awarded the contract and should be moving on site anytime soon," Mr Daka said.

Mr Daka also revealed that the local authority has proposed to re-develop the council guest house into a four-storey structure that would have a budget hotel as an anchor investment.

He said the project, which would be carried out on a build, operate and transfer basis, is currently at procurement stage and that, the council had proposed a budget of US$3 million to undertake the exercise.

"As council, we are determined to change the face of Solwezi and we have a number of projects which we would be fulfilling in the next one year to ensure that it was developed to levels befitting a mining town," Mr Daka explained.(SumaSystems/Solwezi Today).
