Brisbane. Experience, skill, poisse under pressure and a semi-home GF as the MCG has been almost a second home over the last few years.

I want Port to win so they can stop brisbane equalling Collingwood's record of 4 in a row.

Having said that, I think Brisbane may just get over the line if they are near strength. However, if Brisbane go into the game with some injured players, I reckon Port might steal this.

Never thought I would say this, but go the Power.

Just on a side note, though this won't count for much, but Port Adelaide and Brisbane have met in a Grand Final before. Admittedley, it was the pre-season Ansett Cup, in 2001, the year Brisbane won their first premiership. I was at that game, in Adelaide.

Everyone will say that the pre-season competition is mickey mouse, which it is, but at that stage, neither team had a trophy in the trophy cabinet so both would have been eager to win it, and no-one at that stage would have imagined that the Lions would go on to be one of the all time great sides in the AFL.

Just for the record, in that particular Grand Final, Port Adelaide thumped Brisbane. Is that an omen for this week?

I did vote Brisbane, but think they are a trifle overrated.

Brisbane, but it's going to be close I think, a lot tougher than last year.

jellyman, i don't understand your comments on Brisbane Lions being overrated?? How can a team that has won 3 premierships on the trot and going for their 4th be overrated? They surely must be 1 of the all time great teams by now for their achievements in the past few years?

jacobsian
September 20th, 2004, 01:12 PM
Wezza - the thing with the AFL grand final is that no matter the ladder positions or past results, anything can happen on the day. Yet people have been saying Brisbane would win the 2004 premiership since a day after last year's grand final. It doesn't matter how good a side is, there is no such thing as any club being guaranteed to win the premiership. I assume that's why one would consider them overrated in that regard.

Port should win, when you have the one side win too many times they become the evil empire - Brisbane is that evil empire which must be overthrown, alas my kittys couldn't do it last week, but they gave them a scare.

yob - Well they've done a darn fine job in 2004 thus far and are looking pretty good for the flag again this year. Judging on previous performances, i think the people who had been predicting them winning the next year the day after the grand final have had a pretty good reason to do so!! And on the past 2 occasions.........They have been right! GO THE LIONS!

Brisbane by 3 goals!!!

Amaruu

But the point is, it's a 2 horse race. What happens if Port come out breathing fire and slam on 5 goals to Brisbane's nil and suddenly the Lions find themselves way behind the 8-ball? Of course it could work in reverse. Of course, it could be tight all day. But thats the point...2 horse race...anything can happen. Its on the day.

I did mean the lions were overrated in terms of their chances of winning, and not in terms of being a champion team. I still think they are favourites for a good reason, but there is no reason why Port can't have a good game and win.

And what really has been the difference between Port and Brisbane the last few years? Brisbane had a few bad games in the home and away seasons to finish second on the ladder instead of first, and Port had a few bad games in the finals, to miss the grand final. Is it better management, or luck that Brisbane's bad games weren't in the finals? Maybe its something as simple as Brisbane being a warm weather team.

And maybe its something as simple as the heat. Home ground is Brisbane where they consistently beat nearly everyone, possibly due to better acclimatisation to the heat. And good form in the finals, when the weather is warmer than middle of winter.

^ I think it all has to do with mental toughness.

jellyman
September 21st, 2004, 10:54 AM
yes that would be an important factor, but maybe not the only factor.

Another aspect of Brisbane's 'invincibility', their record against top 8 teams this year is:

loss West coast twice, St Kilda, Geelong, Sydney
wins Sydney, Melbourne, Essendon, Port Adelaide, St Kilda

for a total of 5 wins, 5 losses.

Will Roy & HG be calling the game on JJJ?

Wouldn't matter - channel 10 telecast on a 3 second delay, just enough to make the lag between radio and television annoying. They do it for this exact reason :(

jellyman
September 25th, 2004, 02:57 AM
how hard would it be to lag the radio by 3 seconds?

and go the lions. Nervous tension is starting to build in my veins.

By the way, the Lions put up a hell of a fight for 2.75 quarters. But, my god, I'm savouring the moment right now. Nothing can take this from me.

I'll post pics soon.

Congrats Pikey. Port really deserved it, and I was hoping they would win (I'm a Geelong fan and Brissy had knocked us out :(). I had tipped the Lions but Port were in top gear and Brissy looked flat. Glad to hear you had a good time here too, imagine the atmosphere when the ground is completed at 100'000 capacity :D
