In December, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq of 20 Hawker Beechcraft T-6A Texan, and 36 AT-6B Texan II aircraft as well as associated support. But as often happens with foreign military sales, the numbers look a bit different six months on.

The deal, according to Hawker Beechcraft executives, now calls for 15 T-6A trainer aircraft, with the first eight scheduled to be delivered this fall, with seven more in the fall of 2010. The company's Dick Norwood said that there is “nothing on the [AT-6Bs] yet for Iraq.

The AT program was delayed for a short period of time until the Iraqis get their budgets straightened out and our LOA for that is uncertain, but it’s anticipated sometime in 2010.”

Russ Bartlett, of the T-6's Business Development, added that the T-6B’s export version is called the T-6C, “which is an upgraded aircraft with a hardpoint wing. Morocco is the lead customer for the T-6C, and they’ve signed an FMS case for 24 aircraft (and two simulators) and we’ll start delivering those in late 2010, though 2012.” The hardpoint wing gives customers the capability to carry external fuel tanks, practice bombs, weaponry, etc. Bartlett pointed out that the Moroccans are using their hardpoint wings for fuel tanks.

The AT-6 model, Bartlett said, is going be outfitted with a new cockpit later this year which includes two Integrated Avionics Computers, two Up Front Control Panels and six Multi-Function Displays, and the aircraft will have “an EO/IR pod on the belly, three hardpoints on each wing, moving map, data transfer capability, full motion video data
links, etc. this would be your counterinsurgency aircraft.” Norwood added that the airplane “has so many applications for border patrol, irregular warfare…it is a low cost platform, we’re trying to provide something that can operate in a low-intensity conflict,” while boasting of advanced surveillance and ISR capabilities.

Morocco's first four Beechcraft T-6C trainers departed the manufacturer's Wichita site in Kansas on 14 January for their delivery to the African nation.

Each flown by two Hawker Beechcraft pilots, the aircraft were transferred carrying their Royal Moroccan Air Force markings. The nation - the first to have acquired the T-6C - will eventually receive 24 of the type under a September 2009 contract worth more than $185 million.

Morocco's new aircraft will enter service at its air force's training school at Menara-Marrakesh air base. The turboprops will be used to prepare pilots to fly the service's new fleet of 24 Lockheed Martin F-16C/Ds, deliveries of which have yet to start.
Featuring a CMC Electronics-supplied glass cockpit, hands on throttle and stick controls and a head-up display, the T-6C can be equipped with external fuel tanks or weapons using its underwing hard points.

Beechcraft T-6 Texan II le cousin américain du PC-9 suisse

Dans les années 80, l'USAF et l'US Navy étudièrent le remplacement de leurs avions d'entraînements de bases, respectivement les Cessna T-37 Tweet et les Beech T-34 Mentor, par un unique appareil commun qui devrait respecter les contraintes imposées par les deux forces aériennes. En 1988, le programme baptisé JPATS (Joint Primary Aircraft Training System) démarra et un appel d'offres fut lancé. En tout, sept constructeurs répondirent à l'appel. Parmi eux, plusieurs firmes (souvent associés à un constructeur américain) présentèrent avec des avions à réaction : Cessna avec son 526 CitationJet, Agusta et son S-211A, Aermacchi avec le MB-339, DASA et le FanRanger, et FMA pour son Pampa 2000. Seuls Embraer et Pilatus proposèrent des appareils turbopropulsés : avec respectivement le Super Tucano et le PC-9.

Au bout de 14 mois d'étude, ce fut finalement cette dernière entreprise, associé avec Beechcraft et Raytheon, qui décrocha le contrat du JPATS, avec un Pilatus PC-9 légèrement modifié à l'origine. Mais au fil du programme, les nombreuses exigences supplémentaires et les conflits entre l'USAF et la Navy entrainèrent des retards et des augmentations de coûts, ainsi que des modifications plus substantielles. Cela déboucha sur un avion presque entièrement nouveau, à 70% modifié par rapport au PC-9 suisse, et 22% plus lourd que le Pilatus d'origine. Le 9 octobre 1998, il effectua son premier vol et l'appareil reçut la désignation que son ancêtre le T-6 Texan en hommage à l'appareil de North American de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

Le Beechcraft T-6 Texan II est donc un avion biplace en tandem, monomoteur à turbopropulseur, construit par la société Hawker-Beechcraft (précédemment Raytheon Aircraft). Son cockpit est pressurisé et muni de sièges éjectables zéro-zéro, d'une avionique améliorée, d'une verrière modifiée à l'épreuve des oiseaux et un moteur Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-A-67 de 1.100 ch. De nouveaux systèmes destinés à reproduire les sensations de piloter un avion à réaction sont ajoutées au système de pilotage, favorisant l'adaptation aux jets par la suite.

Le manche et la manette des gaz à commandes intégrées gèrent la séquence de démarrage des moteurs, le gouvernail se règle automatiquement pour contrer le couple de l'hélice, quelle que soit la vitesse et l'altitude de l'appareil.

Afin de mieux correspondre aux avions actuels, l'avion fut encore amélioré, devenant le T-6B, avec un poste de pilotage comprend un afficheur tête haute (HUD), des écrans digitaux multifonctions et un système de pilotage « mains sur manche et manette » (HOTAS).

Sa mise en service commença en 2001 et à la fin de cette même année, l'USAF demanda une accélération de la production de cet appareil. Les derniers T-37B opérationnels furent retirés du service à l'été 2009. Pour l'US Navy, le remplacement des T-34C débuta en août 2003. Malgré qu'en 2007 le Departement of Defence rapporta un surcoût de près de 50% du programme, le processus de remplacement se poursuit encore. Donc, la fourniture des différentes unités de l'USAF et l'US Navy devrait durer jusqu'en 2017 avec un total de 724 avions commandés.

L'appareil a également été dérivé dans une version armée, désigné AT-6B, destiné à l'entrainement au tir et l'attaque au sol. Ainsi de nouvelles modifications ont été apportées : une structure renforcée, un moteur et un cockpit protégés par un blindage léger et une puissance augmentée à 1600 ch. Il est également équipé d'un système de liaison de données intégré et de capteurs électro-optiques. De plus, il peut recevoir un équipement de contremesure infrarouge composé d'un système d'alerte d'approche de missile AN/AAR47 et d'un système d'éjection de leurres thermiques ALE-47.

Le T-6A Texan II équipe aussi d'autres forces aériennes dans le monde en tant qu'appareil d'entrainement de base : la Royal Canadian Air Force (sous la désignation CT-156 Harvard II), la Grèce , le Maroc, l'Irak et l'Israël. Ils devraient rester opérationnels au Etats-Unis jusqu'en 2040.

Les élèves débutent sur Bravo, puis T6, puis Alphajet, puis F5-F1-F16. A partir du T6 ce ne sont que des glass cokpit.
