The Journey

Kader dan Fullo was born in a Fulani family of scholars from Kurfi, in the state of Katsina, his father, Shehu Sa'adu dan Fullo was a respect Imam in the local mosque and his mother Khadijah the daughter of a noble man from the state of Sokoto of the Hausa stock in Wamakko, her great grandfather was related to the sarki of Kano albeit distant. Kader was a well respected boy, his father being an imam, Kader at only 8 was already performing the adhān (Call for prayer), so was his knowledge of Islam that at 11 he was already a well respected muezzin, his friends called him 'Bilali' (After Bilal) because of his sweet voice, he was a respected performer of Kirari (Praise songs) and was fluent in the Goge instrument,, he sang about the prophet, the sarki, his ancestors, his community, his struggles, his family, his neighbors, his land etc. and for this everyone could relate to him; Kader was every parents dream, right after Dawn prayers he would walk the cattle; Every man wanted his daughters to marry into the Dan Fullo; Every boy wishes he was as knowledgeable as Kader, but Kader was humble, he never thought he was 'different', he saw it as a talent from God which did not come as a coincidence because he worked for it and because he could, any young man of Kurfi, or Katsina, or Arewa, can do it as well, such was his humbleness, he never forgot his roots.

But things were not as simple for Kader, life was a struggle, he was the only child of the family, most of his siblings died before he could walk properly, he had 2 sisters 1 lived in the state of Borno, the other lived in the state of Adamawa all were married and far from home. His parents were ageing and were surviving on their reputation in the community, for what they did to their community, what Kader could afford was not enough for his family but he found solace in God, he was pious and in that he thanked God for the little he had, but life was a challenge and Kader had to make changes in his life, things were developing too fast and Kader could not see himself as a Kirari so he came up to his father and told him "Father, I have to go"; his father paused, and asked him in his softest tone, "Where my son?", Kader looked down, picked up the sand at his fathers feet, looked down for 5 seconds and looked at his father's red eyes and said, "Father. Somewhere that I don't know!", his father was not surprised because he knew that life was a struggle for Kader, 2 weeks back Kader had spoken of what he termed, his own 'Personal Hijrat' or in simpler terms, 'His journey to better his current condition', so his father understood, and he had to respect his son's decision, he had to have a good feeling, even though deep inside, Father knew that he may not be alive when Kader comes back, if anytime soon; So this was taking a strain on the family, but they had to keep strong and together, what's righteous had to be respected, Kader was not a bad boy and the prophet had to perform Hijra so part of it was sunnat, his father knew this.

2 days later, early in the morning, after Fajr prayers (Dawn), he let his parents know, the day before his mother had already prepared the milk/Fura de Nunu in the Tummu de (the Fulani gourd) for the journey, his mother asked, "Why so early Kader? I wanted to decorate the gourd for your journey", Kader smiled and said "Mom" he walked and kissed her, loaded his belongings, his milk, jewelry, clothes, onto his donkey and went into his fathers room, Kader said his goodbyes, jumped on his donkey, put on his hat, loaded his sword and dagger, and went.

He went through all the villages, from Katsina, and Kaduna, not missing a prayer in a week, he was running out of milk, but thankfully he was nearing Akwanga/Nasarawa, there he met a Tiv family he waved and they waved back, hungry and running out of milk, Kader had to reach Lafia, it was all in Gods hands. He went through village after village, waving as he passed through, he was a traveler and his journey was peaceful, although thinner in appearance his journey through the bushes of Nasarawa meant that his donkey was healthy and he was just a few miles away from Lafia where he hoped to meet a few Fulani traders and families or preferably a mosque as well, after all it is not the first time he's been in Lafia and he may come across some familiar faces, but Lafia was not his final destination, that's just where he wanted to 're-fuel' and get enough supply for his final destination, that night he found a bush, he took his sword and cleaned the area from any reptiles that may be hiding in any bushes, he unloaded his mat hut, and slept, for what was supposed to be his final night before reaching Lafia.

Struggle for Lafia

Kader woke up with renewed optimism, it was a matter of hours before he reached Lafia, he was just outside of Gwandere, that makes it a few miles outside of the gates of Lafia, Kader loaded his mat, and rode to his destination, this was turning into an unforgettable journey with everything that he's been through, things were looking brighter for the young man, along the way he met a Fulani couple, and they shouted "Where to?" Kader, with his shining face, shouted back "Lafia, Inshallah", and they shouted "Enjoy". Very thirsty, he stopped and and jumped over a fence into a quiet homestead, attracted by a well, he helped himself to fresh water, his stomach hurting from the contaminated water that he's been drinking for over a week, while drinking and pouring water over himself to keep himself tidy before reaching Lafia, a group of youth from the tight knit Tiv community ran up to him, cursing him and throwing stones, Kader smelled real danger and hid in the bushes, his clothes, wet and dirty he wasn't sure he'd be making it to Lafia in 1 piece, he must've stepped on a few toes, he must have made himself too comfortable for the liking of the local community, he hid there for almost an hour, and went out, breathing fast, tired, scared, to his worst nightmare, he could not find his donkey, he showed restraint by not stepping into danger to seek what was his, he was no match for the local Tiv, he had to move forward empty handed, or move back and find help; Without his belongings, he was worth nothing, how could he trade? He was destined to beg. He went to a rock, his hands and knees bleeding from hiding behind a thorny bush; Sat, and cried, this was not what he expected. "Why? Why did I jump their fence?" He whispered, with tears running down on his cheeks, there was no way he could negotiate his way through his ordeal because he was an outsider, but he was just a few miles from Lafia, he had to move forward.

Nearing Lafia, there he found a young Fulani lady, Kader being a recognizable foreigner because of his appearance and his drained body spotting foreign Fulani marks, obviously worried for the young man, she shouted, "What is wrong?" Coming from a conservative background, Kader was relatively shy in the presence of a woman and could hardly keep eye contact. He shouted back, defiantly in his recognizably thick Katsina accent, "Nothing", he walked on and she ran up to him held him back, she shouted at Kader, "Look at me, something is wrong, tell me what it is, where are you from?!", whipping tears from his face, he said "I came from Kurfi, I lost everything but Alhamdulillah I'm here", she asked him where he was heading to, and Kader replied "I am hoping to reach Lafia", she replied, "We can walk together, I am also going that way", Kader feeling much more comfortable, asked "What is your name?", she replied, "Amina; Yours?", "Kader", he replied.

They reached Amina's home in less than 40 minutes, her parents were worried and eager to hear why Kader was there, where he came from, who he was; As difficult as it was for him to repeat himself, he told them, he went through his ordeal with tears running down his face, Amina's father, replied, "We will not abandon you, you can stay here with us tonight, we'll give you transport, clothing, food whatever you may need to trade at the market, there is a beginning for us all and life is a learning curve, hopefully you have learnt from your experience" he paused, "I can't thank you more, God bless you and your family", Kader mumbled.

To continue...

Artist Yinka Shonibare Creates A Giant Maze To Cover Entire Floor Of Gallery
A gallery employee walks through Yinka Shonibare's maze installation entitled 'Jardin d'amour' at the Parasol unit for contemporary art on March 7, 2011 in London, England. Also showing are works by Yang Fudong, Shirin Neshat, Christodoulos Panayiotou. Each of these artists explores the theme of love in different times and cultures through their personal experiences. The exhibition title takes its cue from a 1960s song written by Bert Berns and performed by The Exciters, in which there is the recurring lyric, ‘I know something about love’ and runs from 9th March to 22 May, 2011.
