View Full Version : Visiting Athens for break, the lesser known spots please?
ArchitectofDesign April 12th, 2011, 04:58 AM Hi,
Actually double Hi, as its my first post :-) (Iv been browsing for much longer!)
I'm visiting Athens in June, Architecture student, apart from Acropolis and usual hot spots, what other Architectural/geological gems are out there that you know of?
Any advice would be much appreciated and i could even post pics when i get back with them in person!!
Thank you!

Here's a great website below to use as a guide, most places of interest in Athens are accessible by the metro (subway). Other than Classical era structures there are many Byzantine Churches, the First Cemetery of Athens (neoclassical), the new Olympic Stadium home of the 2004 Olympics, http://www.oaka.com.gr/default.asp , The Planetarium, http://www.eugenfound.edu.gr/frontoffice/portal.asp?cpage=NODE&cnode=6&clang=1 , and the new Acropolis Museum, http://www.theacropolismuseum.gr/default.php?pname=Home&la=2 ,
Also Don't miss the National Archaeological Museum and if you get a chance go up Lykavittos Hill at night to get the best view of the city from up above. If you want to take pictures of the Parthenon at sunset there is a small hill opposite the Acropolis called the Pnyx Hill, this gives you the best view of the ancient citadel and it is also the site were the ancient Athenians gathered to participated in democratic debates.

mauder April 12th, 2011, 06:17 PM Others places of interest in Athens: old Eastern Airport by Eero Saarinen at Elliniko, Benaki Museum of Islamic Art at Thissio District (metro station Thisio), New Benaki Museum in Pireos Str. (metro station Keramikos or Petralona), Benaki Museum in Vasilis Sofias Ave. (metro station Evangelismos), Christian and Byzantin Museum (metro station Evangelismos) Vuliagmeni Lake (as you said about geological gems), Hellenic World Center (Ellinikos Kosmos) in Pireos Str., USA Embassy by Walter Gropius, fantastic Athens Botanical Garden "Diomidio" and Dafni's Monastery, that is inclused in UNESCO world heritage.

christos-greece April 13th, 2011, 01:14 PM @ArchitectofDesign: First of all welcome to SSC forums. Secondly about your question, the city of Athens has many "unknown" areas you may visit here in Athens. Except of those mauder said, also: the recently opened Onassis Letters and Culture building in Syggrou avenue, the Technopolis in Gazi and more...
Have a nice stay in Athens
