Stupid Question:

When did Universities lose interest in, or responsibility for, providing residential colleges?

It seems to have been a consideration in sandstone times and even in early redbrick times eg Monash or UNSW.

Even Macq has an extensive high rise building program underway, but no emphasis on student accom.

Interesting analysis.

Not sure why the change in mentality, but it certainly does seem strange. Maybe its more about lessening risk, by not having to build and fill buildings full of rooms/apartments. The private sector takes that on instead.

Our cities are starting to fill with lots of these types of developments though, which have little use other than that market. They are just too small to be considered attractive options for other segments of the market at this stage, unless theres a big mindset change in coming years.

Interesting. Perhaps they just decided accomodation wasn't really a core part of the education business? For example, in the past airlines used to have interests in hotels.

It's unacceptable though that some students find themselves such poor accomodation.

I am glad that they are highlighting the issue. That is appaling, even worse with students being ordered to have sex etc and the oral contracts.

The University of Technology here in Sydney has been building additional on campus accomodation for students, which isn't that far off from completion.

Rumor has it that all the houses that university of queensland has brought around the university over the last 30 years are going to redeveloped into an urban village for students.

We need more laws to stop this.

Back to topic, it would be good to see Unis get back into the apartment market for their kids. Certainly those with endless parking land, and the potential for better PT.
