I represent Kyiv, Ukraine. I permanently live there, but I study in America. After studying I will come back to Kyiv.

I can also say that I partially represent Belarus, because my Mother was half Belarusian. So that makes me 25% Belarusian and 75% Ukrainian. But I don't really know what is going on in Belarus, when it concerns construction. There is not much going on there. Although I have visited Belarus about 10 times.

Well, you're quite clearly a libertarian and have your own opinion. That's fine, but the 35 hour work week is proven, by the numbers, to be the productivity peak.

Yes, except freedom is such a silly concept that I can't believe we're still arguing over the apporpriate definition of it. In my world, for example, there isn't an exact definition.

Work as basically a slave or starve, for example, is not freedom to me, but it certainly would be to a libertarian.

Ok, where? There's been a decade of such 'improvement' the world over, and the results are mixed at best. The average GDP growth of the world hasn't been lower since the depression. Not to mention the silly concept of 'free market' which is often just as hierarchical as the government. There's a reason corporations were made - the free market is and was too tough, not to mention Smith's idea of market readjustment just didn't work. But this isn't a political forum, and it's like I'm going to change your mind.

95% of the enterprise are privatized. 35h/per week is only in the law. Really people work +-37h/per week. But worker in France are never satisfied. They wanted 35h, Jospin give them...and has been kicked out. Now they can do more than 35h and they voted for the socialist...

No, of course you ain't gonna change my mind, especially when you obviously don't really know much about the topic.
The problem is, in the last 60 years, since the end of WW2, the shift has always been towards the left - just look at western europe now - if I stretch it a little, it's more socialist then Tito's Jugoslavija ever was.

I've been studying the topic for the last 4 years of my life, if by the topic you mean politics and economics ;)

Anyways, I'm waiting for the benefits of structural adjustment. But a libertarian always has an out by saying 'but it's never been fully realized.' Right, like any other ideology has.

Toronto is the best microcosm of this, seeing as how the last decade has basically let the business plan the city. Not surprisingly, it is precisely the decade that we are now trying to fix.

Please noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Environment is one side where libertarianism has been defeated from anthropology, ecology, biology, everywhere!

BTW, notice I said Toronto in the last _decade_. Gardiner's old. I was talking about decentralized business oriented way of planning out a city. It's turned out real well :|

Well, Infinite, I'm sure you agree this is hardly the forum to express disagreement, and I know I'm partially to blame for taking the thread so amazingly off topic. I didn't see the last post when I posted about TO. In any case, we both obviously like cities and agree on city planning, and seeing as how that's what this forum is supposed to be about, I'm going to stop politicking.

I've been to Slovakia twice, to Kosice and Bratislava. I liked it a lot.

more of us here :) And the changes? I just read an article about Slovakia in Canadian Business Magazine

A European powerhouse

We may have beat them in hockey, but Slovakia can definitely teach Canada a lesson or two

"Canada rolls past Slovakia." That recent newspaper headline referred, of course, to the 5-0 quarter-final rout of our European rivals in the World Cup of Hockey. But while Team Canada may have bested Slovakia on the ice, in the political and economic arena the Slovaks may still have a manoeuvre or two to teach us.

In August, I had an opportunity to spend a couple of weeks in the country of 5.4 million, born after Czechoslovakia's amicable 1993 Velvet Divorce. No matter which of the two nations they are now in, Slovaks speak politely to Czechs in Slovak; Czechs answer politely in Czech--despite the fact that they're two distinct languages. No linguistic animosities there.

After going their separate ways, Slovakia, the traditionally poorer half of Czechoslovakia, struggled with post-communist cronyism and corruption; its economy was a basket case. Today, it's a true tiger and a full member in NATO and the European Union. The Financial Times has dubbed it "the belated high achiever of post-communist central Europe," while Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, has declared it an "investor's paradise."

So what has Slovakia done to turn the corner? For starters, its centre-right coalition government initiated bold reforms, including the privatization of most state-owned enterprises and an overhaul of social benefits. More importantly, an across-the-board flat tax of 19% has replaced a corporate tax rate that stood at 25% and personal income taxes that topped 38%. Inheritance taxes have been abolished. So, too, have taxes on dividends.

On a busy summer night in Bratislava, Slovakia's capital, well-dressed young professionals crowd the terraces and cafés of the lovingly preserved historic centre, their Peugeots, Renaults and Mercedes-Benzes parked on the fringes of the environmentally friendly pedestrian zone. Real estate prices are soaring. Unemployment in the city now stands at just 3.7%, compared with a challenging national average of about 14%.

Expect that number to change, though. Slovakia's economy has been the fastest-growing in central Europe over the past two years. GDP growth for the first half of 2004 clocked in at 5.4%--and analysts say that figure is sustainable. Productivity is rising. Inflation, currently at 7.2%, is on the decline, and the country's trade deficit is swiftly narrowing. "Low direct tax rates and labour costs, a favourable business environment and an advantageous geographical location have increasingly lured foreign direct investment," the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development noted earlier this year.

No kidding. A massive facility on the outskirts of Bratislava pumps out luxury Volkswagen Touaregs and helps make Porsche Cayenne SUVs. PSA Peugeot Citroën has also set up shop. Slovakia beat out Poland to host a new Hyundai plant, expected to produce up to 300,000 Kia vehicles a year after it opens in 2006. The announcements of new factory groundbreakings are getting difficult to keep up with.

This success, of course, doesn't sit well in some quarters. Germany has grumbled. And French Finance Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has proposed the EU slash structural funds to countries whose taxes are lower than the average. Talk about sour grapes. It's absurd to punish nations simply for being competitive. So Team Canada, watch your backs--and get in the game.

Scott Steele, The Executive Editor

Great pictures and article Peter!
It's hard to believe that even after seeing all the positive results this government has achieved and all the praise from respected authorities abroad, majority of the Slovak people are still depressed, angry and they relentlessly bitch about the government most of the time. Stupid tiny affairs, bloathed by the tabloid press are considered by the public as major mishaps. Sure, corruption and such is still present, but it won't ever go away... All other things are rapidly getting better but the approval ratings of the govt. are falling. I just don't get it, seems like a lot of people in this country are just, simply put, dumb.

BTW, do you people like the design of the new bridge? I think it's cool.

BUMP!!!

Yes! I have bumped a thread that will be 3 years old 5 days. Suck it EE!

This thread brings back the memories of another realm and simpler times. So many of these people are gone, banned, or just dead. Now this forum is just plain crap, full of damn newbies. :ohno:

So many noobs, I feel like being here forever, although I've been here for less than 2 years (3 years counting the time I hadn't yet joined though, but I wasn't regularly here then).

There is some conspiracy there!

It writes 3 Bulgarians, but the list of forumers voted for Bulgaria comprises of 8 users :)

Yesterday when i voted we had 9 votes..now only 3. I think this thread should be closed. In 1 or 2 months someone could make a new one. :)

That way we can see how many we used to be, and compare with the latest poll results of last year

by international threads, do you mean the international sections? Then yes. English only.

Here, the local sections, obviously you can use the local language of the thread, but we like if one can at least give some sort of short (and it can be just a few words description) translation of whatever the news article is about. And be couteous when some stranger asks for information, to tell him what he needs to know that might not have been translated. I don't think that's a problem, it's pretty much common sense for people to answer questions.
