New satellite building plan for KLIA
SEPANG: A new satellite building at the KL International Airport will be operational before the airport reaches its capacity in three years time.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said KLIA would reach its capacity of 25 million arrivals in “two to three years.”
“We have started planning to expand the capacity of KLIA by building a new satellite building to the structure.
“The current number of passenger arrivals is expected to reach 19.5 million this year, so in two to three years, KLIA would have reached its capacity,” he said.
Chan earlier performed the ground-breaking ceremony for AirAsia's Simulator Complex here yesterday.
On another matter, Chan said any decision to turn the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang into a hub for low-fare air travel would be based on national interest.
“It is a major decision and we are looking at various aspects like convenience to the public, cost of operating low-cost airlines and connectivity,” he said.
Earlier, Chan said the complex was a boost to the country’s aviation industry and could serve as a training ground for pilots in the region.
He said the Government also welcomed the alliance between AirAsia and CAE, a leading training solutions provider on advance simulation and control technology, as it could propel the country into the forefront of pilot training.

they might build a low cost terminal block for budget air-s or a future airbus380 terminal. Or both?

Passenger volume at local airports hits record high
PASSENGER volume at Malaysian airports rose to record levels in August, backed by higher tourist arrivals and increased landing frequencies by major airlines at the KL International Airport (KLIA).
In August, passenger movement numbers at KLIA had risen 16% to 1.35 million visitors compared with the corresponding month last year. The figure was the highest since the main airport started operations in 1998.
MAHB had earlier projected that total volume at KLIA would reach 18.5 million passengers this year, although company officials had indicated that the actual figures could be potentially higher.
“Normally, the last two months of the year will be one of the busiest times at the airport,’’ an official said at the Airports Council International's World Conference Assembly and Exhibition in Lisbon.
On a cumulative basis, a total of 13.5 million passengers used KLIA during the first eight months of this year, up 24.7% compared with the corresponding period last year.
International passenger volume at the airport was also at a record high in August with 1.16 million travellers using KLIA.
For the eight months to August, international traveller movements at Malaysia’s main airport had improved 28% from last year.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Bashir Ahmad said passenger volume at KLIA had continued to improve this year.
He said the robust growth was attributed to higher tourist arrivals into the country and increased frequencies to KLIA by major airlines to cater for the growing demand by international travellers.
Last month, two new airlines - Indonesia’s Jatayu Airlines and China’s Hainan Airlines - started operations at KLIA. Currently, 45 airlines are operating at KLIA.
Besides KLIA, MAHB also operates four other international airports in Malaysia, 16 domestic airports and 18 airstrips. Overall, 25.54 million people used Malaysian airports between January and August this year, or 22.6% more than last year.
The amount of cargo transported through KLIA during the first eight months had also improved, with 422,000 metric tonnes handled by MAHB, or 12% higher than last year.
Meanwhile, the KLIA bagged three major international awards, including the third best airport in the world, accorded by its global peers at an industry conference in Lisbon, Portugal, last Thursday.
Airports in Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur finished tops among 35 airports participating in the Global Airport Monitor Survey 2003, which reflected passenger satisfaction across a wide range of services.
“The recognition is a major boost for KLIA. Previously, we were ranked fifth in the world and the latest achievement will spur us as the airport operator to further improve our services,’’ Bashir said after the award presentation ceremony.

I'm a bit confused. I always thought that this is such a massive airport, outlined to handle like 50 million passengers. :?

^^^ klia is designed to handle 100 millions - the complete design consists of 2 terminals and 4 satelite buildings, what you see today is just 1/4 of the full design, hence the 25 million capacity

Yes.....the current configuration which consist of a single satellite building and a Main Terminal Building just accounted for a quarter of the airport's projected handling capacity. Its half mark would've realised with the construction of a second satellite building just across from the current building.
The 3/4 mark would be the construction of the MTB mirroring the current one with the control tower in the middle as well as another satellite building (3rd) while the final phase would be the 4th satellite building ;)

But the sign is a bit confusing though...

Where will the new satelitte terminal be? To the right of the current one I suppose (looking from the MTB)? I noticed provisions for future AeroTrain links between the MTB and future satelitte terminal. :)
I've only taken plane from KLIA once, sadly. And domestic flight too.
