Speaking yesterday at Onitsha during the International Stakeholders’ Conference on “Harnessing the potentials of lower River Niger,” the Minister for Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman said the port had been concluded to start operation by June this year. According to Alhaji Suleiman, the port would among other things reduce the sufferings of the importers in the country and enhance the economic activities in the country, adding that importers would not be subjected to untold sufferings they had faced in the other ports. “Onitsha is the centre of commerce and industry and this part of the country is very essential and that is why the Federal Government decided to hold the summit here it would enable it know the extent the dredging of the lower Niger has gone.” “The National Inland Waterway Authority will work in collaboration with the private sectors to make sure the port and other infrastructure are sustained and maintained so that our people will maximize the gains of democracy.” Also speaking, the state Governor, Peter Obi said the dredging of the lower River Niger and the completion of the Onitsha Port was very critical to his administration’s resolve to industrialize the state. Governor Obi, however, lauded the Federal Government for expeditiously concluding the projects of Onitsha port, which he said would enhance industrialization in the state and the country at large. Obi spoke when he led some top government officials on inspection of the project. He noted that the second business park was almost twice the size of the first one and in line with the initiative of his administration to attract back business to Onitsha and restore the glory of the commercial city. He recalled that the site for the project abandoned and neglected over the years by successive administrations has been given huge economic value. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Chuma Okafor, said the park which was coming on the heels of the success of the first Business Park was targeting the information and communication technology and communication companies to create common synergy for business to grow in the state. Okafor explained that like the first business park, which serves as a financial service centre, the second will provide ICT and communication companies with common facilities and common energy to grow and create business and employment for the people. It will be recalled that the first Business Park built in Onitsha has since started functioning. Through letting, the government said, the bulk of the money for the building of the Second Park was realised. http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=32256 Rdokoye April 24th, 2011, 07:33 PM JUBILATION IN ONITSHA AS THE DRAINING OF SACAMORI STARTS Ijeoma Nnodum, Awka Thursday 21st April, 2011 Governor Peter Obi says the on-going multi-billion naira dredging and re-channeling of the Sacamori Drain will provide a permanent solution to the challenges of persistent flooding in parts of Onitsha. Governor Obi was speaking while inspecting work at the drain. According to Governor Obi the dredging project will involve among other things, total clean up of the silted drain, re- channeling to ensure proper discharge of flood into the river as well as concrete work to protect the boarders and other critical parts of the drains. He regrets that poor management of environment over the years resulted to the silting and blockage of the drain and disclosed that the contractor has assured to sustain aggressive work to open up substantial area within forty-five days. The Governor explained that government immediate intervention will save the situation from getting worse. Governor Obi noted that sustained efforts has enabled his administration to attract Federal Government partnership on the project and warned residents of the area to stop the practice of dumping refuse in the drains so that the aims of the project will not be defeated. The Governor said the project was part of the Urban upgrading of Okpoko while many development projects were underway for the community. The traditional ruler of Okpoko, Igwe Benson Muofunanya, while expressing gratitude to the Governor for the dredging project, noted that it will save the road network in Onitsha. Igwe Muofunanya said Governor Obi was the first Governor to put the collective interest of the State above political interest. The least they can do is get that stand covering the entire stadium not just that small section. I've really had it up to here with Anambra state.
