I agree parts of Nigeria have not been noted for development, instead only epidemics and illiteracy, but remember the former state of Abuja and even Dubai before infrastructure became the norm there. Case in point is The east end of London, UK which was a byword of crime and social depravation. Now with the advent of Olympics and the recent opening of one of Europe's largest shopping mall/district there is an expected turn around in development. Abakaliki, Ebonyi State is a rough diamond waiting to be discovered. Being one of Nigeria's most endowed states with over twenty mineral deposits in commercial quantities, it could turn out to be the California of the east (for those who are familiar with the history of the Californian gold rush of the early 19th century as foundation of it's current prosperity) Madubaymi September 24th, 2011, 11:09 PM Nigeria: Elechi Explains Ocho Udo Mega City Felix Uka 16 March 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email|Print|Comment(1) Share: Abakaliki — Ebonyi State government has clarified contending issues concerning the development of the proposed new capital of the state, the "Ocho Udo" mega city project in Abakaliki. Mr. Jonah Egba, the commissioner for Lands, Survey and Housing, made the clarification during the inspection of major projects being executed by the state government in different parts of the state. "The state government has its own portion to develop while Federal ministries, private and corporate organisations had been allotted appropriate potions inside the city to develop. The government will only ensure the development follows laid down structural plans to avoid distorting the original master plan as presently being witnessed at Federal Capital Territory, Abuja," he stated. He remarked that state's new secretariat complex expected to cost N13 billion and which covers 54 hectares of lands inside the city, will be completed in 2012. At the International market complex, Dr. Paul Okorie, the commissioner for Works and Transport, noted that the project would gulp N12 billion and will also covers 54 hectares of land. He remarked that the third phase of the project, which had attained 60 per cent completion, would gulp N3.6 billion as the state government had paid N1.5 billion to the contractor, Edon Nigeria Limited. "This phase would contain 5,000 lock-up shops, trade centers and shopping malls, as its road network will efficiently link it with the other phases," he said. He noted that efforts had been intensified to check flooding usually experienced in the area, as the choice of the site was made due to its accessibility to various parts of the state and beyond Madubaymi March 1st, 2012, 02:01 AM http://www.icnconsortium.com/pics1/011.jpg |
