Events and festivals

Saint Louis is famous for its urban culture. The heritage of the signares lives on in the city’s many festivals and its cultivated sense of public display, and it is helping Saint-Louis emerge from decades of neglect. "Fanals", which are night-time processions of giant paper lanterns, take place at Christmas time. The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival is the most important jazz festival in Africa. Jazz first became popular in the 1930s when records produced in Cuba were aired on the radio. After WWII, visiting U.S. GIs popularized jazz bands and by the 1950s local groups had adopted a "Cuban" sound. Another music festival, 1, 2, 3 musiques, exhibits various genres of music. The annual reggata, or pirogue race organized by teams of fishermen from Guet-Ndar, takes place on the "little branch" of the river, between Ndar Island and the Langue de Barbarie. The Magal of the Niari Rakas, a yearly commemoration of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké’s (the founder of Mouridism) two prayers in the Governor's Palace in 1895, is the city's largest religious gathering.

The city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and cultural tourism has become an engine of growth. As a result, a process of gentrification has set in, with many historic buildings on the island being turned into restaurants and hotels.

Passionné par l'aviation, Jean Mermoz s'engagea en 1920 dans l'armée de l'air.

Pilote breveté en 1921, il fut dépêché en Syrie où son courage et sa grande maîtrise de l'air lui valurent plusieurs citations.

Démobilisé en 1924, il entra au service de la société Latécoère et fut affecté à la ligne Toulouse - Barcelone - Alicante.

En 1925 il vola sur la ligne Casablanca-Dakar.

Le 10 mai 1927, il inaugurait la ligne Toulouse-Saint-Louis du Sénégal sans escale. La même année il fut chargé par la Compagnie Générale Aéropostale d'assurer la ligne Buenos Aires-Rio de Janeiro.

Le 12 mai 1930, à bord d'un hydravion "Latécoère 28" baptisé "Le Comte de la Vaulx" il réalisa pour la première fois en une vingtaine d'heures la liaison Toulouse - Saint-Louis - Natal au Brésil, transportant 130 kgs de courrier.

Rapidement, les 13 400 kms séparant Toulouse de Santiago du Chili furent parcourus en un peu moins de 109 heures dont 20 heures d'escale.

Le 16 janvier 1933 il relia Dakar à Natal à la vitesse moyenne de 227 km/h. Après une dizaine de traversées de l'Atlantique Sud, Jean Mermoz décolla de Dakar le 7 décembre 1936, à bord de "La Croix du Sud". Quelques heures plus tard, on capta le message radio suivant, "Coupons moteur arrière droit". Rien ne fut retrouvé de "la Croix du Sud".

Brand extension for buddha-bar
George V Restauration (GVR) - the group behind the buddha-bar chain - has revealed further details about the new licensing agreements for six new spas under its Buddhattitude day spa concept and its buddha-bar spas.

Each spa will be owned by a separate company. GVR won't own the spas, but instead license its brand names with extensive guidelines including interiors, layouts, recruitment and training. There are also options in each agreement for a separate management contract, of which five of the six spas have taken.

Next to launch in October 2009 will be a Buddhattitude branded spa in Doha, Qatar. In February 2010, a Buddhattitude will open in Dakar, Senegal in the Fann Corniche area.

Further Buddhattitude spas will open in Dubai, UAE, in December 2010 and Shanghai, China, in late-2010. There will also be buddha-bar spas opening in Panama City, Panama, in 2010 and Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt in 2012.

We recently stayed for three days at the new Radisson Blu in Dakar, on our way down to Mbour. It was our first time in Senegal, although we have travelled extensively in Africa. The Radisson was one of the highest quality international style hotels we have encountered in Africa (outside of South Africa).

The hotel is set on the corniche and has great sea views although there is no beach but this is made up for by the stunning pool and outdoor areas which are more like a hotel in Barcelona than West Africa.

Ok, as its a chain its a tad soulless and is in no way a boutique hotel but for a city hotel or a business hotel is is very good indeed. The rooms, although by no means huge, are of good quality and finished to a decently high standard. The hotel as a whole is very attractive with modern art and a crisp contemporary ambience. It does not have any African styling so you could be anywhere but I think that most people would be more than happy to stay a few nights here, away from the heat and dust.

Service is better than you expect with most of the staff being highly trained. English is not universally spoken but most of the staff speak a bit and the front desk staff are fluent and extremely helpful. The restaurants are superb but there is probably better food elsewhere in Dakar (great city with great nightlife, music and dining). A Buddha Bar is under construction.

The gymnasium was not open at the time of our visit and there was some construction going on but it didnt really take away from the experience.

All in al I'd recommend it if you are in Dakar for a few days and I'd recommend Senegal is you want a different beach break away from the norm. It´s an easy country to visit and seems very safe. The people are incredibly hospitable and easy going with a toal love of music and dancing that is infectious!

le senegal doit develloper aussi ces parc et reserves naturelles comme ca y'aura des circuits de safari de trés haut niveau comme dans l'afrique de l'EST au Kenya par exemple , ca va surement booster le tourisme vue que deja le senegal dispose d'infrastructures assez bonne dans le tourisme balnéaire et ce pays et bcp plus proche de l'europe et du Maroc que le kenya ou la tanzanie donc il a tout pour réussir

Pffttttt !!! Alors là je dis respect !!

Hier je suis allé visiter le nouveau centre commercial de Dakar, construit à proximité de l’hôtel Radisson sur la corniche Ouest. Ce nouveau centre (le Seaplaza) est tout simplement formidable. On retrouve enfin un centre commercial digne des villes occidentales. En effet jusqu’à présent nous étions limités sur Dakar à la fréquentation des Casinos (les hypermarchés) avec leur galerie commerciale composée d’une dizaine maximum de magasins.

Dans le cas du Seaplaza il s’agit d’un vrai centre commercial avec environ 170 commerces à l’intérieur, un supermarché mais également un cinéma et un bowling (toujours en construction). Le cinéma sera le premier digne de ce nom à Dakar !! C’est carrément une révolution pour cette ville et ses habitants (aisés..) qui pourront retrouver dans ce lieu des enseignes telles que Benetton,Mango, Hugo Boss, Celio, 1.2.3, …

Bon effectivement les travaux ne sont pas encore totalement terminé, mais comme on est à Dakar ils ont quand même ouvert la galerie en avance histoire de l’amortir au plus tôt ! C’est pas grave, moi j’adore !

Benetton ouvre un premier point de vente au Sénégal

Après les ouvertures au Maroc, Benetton a ouvert le 8 juillet son premier point de vente au Sénégal. Un magasin consacré à l’enfant qui couvre 150 m² au sein de Seaplaza, un centre commercial de Dakar. Deux autres ouvertures (Sisley et Playlife) suivront en automne-hiver 2010/2011 dans un nouveau grand magasin de la capitale sénégalaise.

Benetton poursuit ainsi son développement sur tout le continent africain où il est présent via des partenariats* : en Tunisie, Lybie, Egypte, Afrique du Sud et au Mozambique. L’automne prochain, ce sera le tour de l’Algérie et de la Côte d’Ivoire, avec deux ouvertures.

*Au Sénégal, le groupe partenaire de Benetton dépend de la famille Kawar, très actif dans le pays et en Côte d’Ivoire dans le secteur de l’habillement, de l’ameublement et du textile de décoration.

Créatrice inspirée, Claire KANE est venue à la mode après un parcours atypique fait de voyages et de diverses professions. A dix sept ans, après son baccalauréat, Claire KANE n’a qu’une idée en tête : découvrir l’Afrique. :cheers:Son premier contact avec ce continent, mais aussi avec la couture s’est fait au Maroc, où elle rencontre une styliste ; Holly BAGDELEY qui vit et exerce aujourd’hui à San Francisco, qui lui apprend son métier. De 1980 à 83, elle étudie les métiers de la Communication à Montréal, à l’UCAM.

Son succès est le fruit d’une rencontre culturelle. Aujourd’hui, le style Claire KANE ne séduit plus seulement une clientèle occidentale, mais aussi Africaine. Depuis ces dix dernières années, claire KANE a participé à trois biennales des arts africains. En 1998 elle a obtenue le prix de la créativité pour le design textile “ DAK’ART 98 “.Elle obtient la Kora d’or à Sun City (Afrique du Sud) en septembre 99, aux Awards de la Mode Africaine. Elle participe aux éditions du FIMA à Paris et au Niger et à d’autres biennales notamment celle de St Etienne.

Dès lors, on lui confie des missions de direction Artistique dont celles de défilés prestigieux tels que celui du palais de la découverte, à Paris, en décembre 2004, pour le groupe Dagris. En mai 2006, elle installe à l’Ecole des Beaux Arts à Paris, le plus grand défilé de mode sénégalaise jamais réalisé (BsB). En décembre 2006, l’Oréal lui confie son défilé annuel dans la grande salle du Carrousel du Louvres devant l’intelligentsia de la Haute coiffure mondiale…

Forte de toutes ses expériences, elle monte une société en janvier 2008, avec son mari graphiste, “ la mædina “, spécialisée dans les services de Direction Artistique, développement d’image, Communication, Mode et Evénement.

Elle fut parmi les premiers créateurs de Mode à avoir une Boutique Virtuelle en 1997, et s’installe à Paris dans le quartier du Marais en 2000. Elle sera ensuite présente dans “ l’espace Créateurs des Halles “ pendant deux ans. En décembre 2006, elle ouvre au 157 du Faubourg St Honoré 75008 Paris, avec son fils et un partenaire français, un Showroom et une boutique multimarques spécialisée dans le sportswear de luxe.

Claire monte maintenant ses propres projets et s'est investit particulièrement depuis un an dans un programme culturel d'appui au développement des régions du nord Sénégal.

Avec ses associés, elle a récemment créé une association spécifiquement dédiée à la lutte pour la "propreté". L'Association "SET SETAL" s'apprête à lancer un vaste programme d'actions dans l'année 2010 en partenariat avec la ville de St Louis du Sénégal.

Enfin, en Mars 2010, sur le site exceptionnel du SEA PLAZA à Dakar et parmi les plus grandes enseignes internationale, elle ouvrira avec ses associés un Showroom où diffuser ses collections et nouveaux produits de Mode et de Design.:banana:

Yeap, Abidjan´s downfall somehow had a positive/accelerating impact on Dakar/ Senegal....That´s what a Senegalese recently has told me.

It's far from being little South-Africa but this country has great potential.
It wil never get much credit n this site because it's francophone(hate to say it).

i got some info about projects(without pics) but they're all in french.

Senegal is one of the few countries in WA I want to visit- the other two are CV and Mali. But the economy isnt really doing THAT well, is it? Like 4-5% growth for many years.

In the 1990s when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia, I used to know one of the people who worked at coca cola head quarters marketing department Africa. He told me that the one thing he liked about Senegal is that it has the largest middle class in all of subsaharan Africa on a percentage basis.

That´s why I am highlighting it in here...it´s the language barrier becuase we rarely have any people from francophone countries in here, they don´t visit English-speaking sides due to langauge....but that dooesn´t mean that their countries are standing still and motionless.

Cuisine européenne et quelques spécialités de poisson sénégalaises.
Ouvert 7j/7 de 12h à 23h, fermeture à minuit.

Sur la corniche est, au pied des grands hôtels, le restaurant le Lagon 1 est un des plus huppés de Dakar. Entrée tropézienne, voiturier, parking gardé,... et bien sûr, la mer.

Ce restaurant a littéralement les pieds dans l’eau. Plus exactement, il est perché sur un ponton surplombant une eau bleue.

Côté gastronomie, il ne faut pas s’attendre à trouver des plats typiquement sénégalais. L’essentiel de la carte est en effet composé de plats européens (pâtes, viandes en sauce, salades composées,...). Seule la carte des poissons comporte quelques préparations locales.

Au pied du restaurant, une plage. À quelques dizaine de mètres, la piscine du Sofitel.

Au loin, on aperçoit sur la colline le palais présidentiel. Et en se tournant vers la mer, c’est l’île de Gorée qui s’offre à nos yeux.

L’Oasis de la petite plage

Situé sur la seconde plage de l’île de Ngor, face à la pointe des Almadies, l’Oasis de la petite plage est un restaurant calme, surplombant la mer.

En Asie, la cuisine et sa préparation ont pris au fil des ans un statut de forme d’art. L’Indochine, plus que de la gastronomie, transporte toute la riche et mystérieuse civilisation asiatique. non Du restaurant haut de gamme, au bar original en passant par les serveurs en kimono, le tout avec une forte dominance de rouge et un décor saisissant, l’Indochine devient un oasis en plein désert.
