Presidents of Senegal:
Senegal has had three presidents in its post-independant history
The one that left a heavy imprint on the country´s history and was even well-known beyond French-speaking countries was Léopold sédar Sehghor.
The founding father of independent Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor, has died at the age of 95. He was a literary genius and wrote a great collection of very fine poetry. And his poems are studied in universities in a lot of French-speaking countries. He was one of the first African leaders to allow democracy and a free press, Mr Senghor was a pioneer.
He was also one of the first African presidents to retire gracefully. In 1981 after 20 years in power he handed over peacefully to his prime minister.
Mr Senghor lived long enough to see one remarkable result of his political liberalism. In the year 2000 in a thoroughly democratic election in Senegal, the long standing opposition leader Abdoulaye Wade, who had been a thorn in Senghor's side for many years, won the presidency.
Senghor entertained very strong French links throughout his life
Leopold Sedar Senghor achieved other firsts as well:
Leopold Sedar Sengho was a respected poet
A poet and scholar when not being a politician, he was the first African to join the highly prestigiuos elite French literary institute as one of its key figures, the "Academie Francaise" in Paris. In Senegal and or other African french speaking countries a lot of places, universities and streets were named after him but also streets, a boulevard and a public park has been named after him in France.
Leopold Sedar Senghor left a legacy of free thinking and free debate in Senegal - a legacy which still marks it out as a very unusual African state.

SECOND PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL, Abou Diouf (1981-2000): He currently lives in France after stepping down. He is currently the head of "la Francophonie".

his beautiful Senegalse wife Elisabeth Diouf (by the way Jacques Chirac is the godfather of one of the kids of Elisabeth´s Diouf daughters. It simply shows how personal the relationship even between the elites of the two countries is)

THIRD PRESIDENT WHO IS A TECHNOCRAT: HIS NAME IS WADE (from 2000)

SAINT LOUIS is Senegal´s second largest and oldest city. It was founded in 1659 by the French. The old quarters are full of beautifully restored old colonial buildings (the Senegalese state and a lot of city partnerships with cities in France exist which put a lot of money to restore the old quarters) It is a magnet for tourists and many Europeans who made it their second home. Twice a year there is a huge international jazz festival. :runaway:

senegal is a tourist place. Almost a million tourist visited Senegal last year (only topped by Kenya and South Africa)
as there are TONS of hotels. MANY others are mushrooming along Petite côte and Dakar and its environs as in Saint Louis.... I will just present a fraction of them to you....and I will stick to the smaller ones which are more personal than the Club Meds, Meridien or Sofitels (all of which do exist in senegal, too)

all I can hope for is that senegal finds oil as there is some exploration going on there presently and if Mauritania has oil why not Senegal!? Senegal would leapfrog if it had Nigeria´s oil and gas reserves...Damn!!

mohamed2 May 7th, 2006, 06:11 PM dakar looks clean compared to nigerian cities . what abt that gadaffi tower ????????
Matthias Offodile May 7th, 2006, 08:18 PM mohammed, this is a problem with the Gadaffi Tower. They started building it but I cannot find any pictures nor renders.
Finding renders or photos for projects outside of South Africa is very hard work. There is very little promotion...but I will keep up the work.
Have you been to Nigeria? I lived in Nigeria and Côte d´ivoire. I only know Dakar from two visits and I liked the city although it was much less sophisticated than Abidjan at that time. But things are imroving and Abidjan ´s downfall tuns out to be Dakar´s luck!
As far as cleanliness of Lagos is concerned: Dakar has just two million people as compared to Lagos which has 16+ million inhabitants. (just consider the magnitude.... because Senegal´s entire population is just 10.5 million!!!)
ChrisZwolle May 8th, 2006, 12:43 PM Are there any skyscrapers or Motorways in the Dakar area? are there pics of the trans sahara freeway, which, according to my map, is leading into senegal? (or was it Mauretania?)

Very Controversial September 2nd, 2006, 07:16 PM Senegal has some nice beaches.
mike2005 September 3rd, 2006, 02:21 PM Senegal is a lovely place. By far the nicest country outside of southern africa in terms of liveability. I have only been a couple of times but like Botswana and Namibia living there would be a pleasure.

abesha December 31st, 2007, 11:12 PM I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dakar! I've lived there for 2 years and it was a wonderful time for me. I cried when I left. The people are wonderful, the culture is wonderful, everything really is as great as portrayed.
The women are also very VERY "coquettes"; lots of French and Lebanese people live there too.
If I ever get rich enough, I'd love to eventually buy a vacation home there. A highly recommended country/city.

Hadrami December 11th, 2010, 10:19 PM FESMAN 2010: World Festival of Black Arts and Culture
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/logofesman1.jpg
Initiated by President Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first edition of the World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures was held in Dakar in 1966. The first Festival brought together people from all generations and disciplines in order to make the rest of the world aware of the struggle and persistence of Black peoples in the face of colonization. In 1977, Nigeria hosted the second edition.
The 2010 Festival conveys a new vision of Africa as free, proud, creative and optimistic. With Brazil as the guest of honour, which is a country rich with artistic cross-pollination and cultural diversity, the Festival will emphasize dialogue between peoples and cultures.

The country will also stage two musical shows: The Brazilian Show will feature a variety of Brazilian musicians and musical styles, while The Lusofonia Party will honour all Portuguese-speaking countries.
The celebration will also feature the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira, dance performances and a festive parade. Of course, the party would not be complete without the aromas and flavours of Brazil: restaurants will feature a variety of Brazilian specialities such as moqueca and caruru.

Hadrami December 11th, 2010, 10:53 PM High-Powered U.S. Delegation Heading For World Festival Of Black Arts In Senegal :)
African-American Artists, Mayors, Senators, Scientists To Participate
For only the third time in 50 years, an unprecedented gathering of black artists, writers, filmmakers, academics, scientists, and other leaders in many fields will convene in Africa for an historic celebration. The World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures, under the auspices of President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and his fellow African leaders, begins Dec. 10 in Dakar, Senegal, and will continue through Dec. 31.
A high-powered U.S. delegation of more than 200 African-American leaders will participate in the Festival, including groups from the National Conference of Black Mayors, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, and the African American Unity Caucus (AAUC), who will travel to Senegal from Dec. 8 -- 17 for the event.
In all, thousands of delegates from 80 countries will converge on Dakar.
Among U.S. delegates are Dr. Julius Garvey, son of Marcus Garvey; actor Richard Gant; jazz legend Randy Weston; Professor James Turner, Cornell University; Dr. Johnetta Cole, Director of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution; Professor Leonard Jeffries, City University of New York; Runoko Rashidi, noted historian; Dr. Elsie Scott, the President & CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Mississippi State Sen. Frazier Hillman; New York State Sen. Bill Perkins; Columbus (Ohio) Mayor Michael B. Coleman; Wayne Watson, president, Chicago State University; and Ron Himes, founder/director, The Saint Louis Black Repertory Theater.
In a letter to members of the delegation, President Wade said he looked forward to welcoming them to Senegal. "The African Union has requested that Senegal organize the Festival, which will be the largest global gathering to date of black artists, writers, filmmakers, intellectuals, scientists and other luminaries, and we anticipate that people will travel from all over the world for the occasion,'' said President Wade.
One highly anticipated event is a discussion involving President Wade and members of the National Conference of Black Mayors, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and the National Basketball Association/Africa (NBA/Africa) at the recently completed Monument of African Renaissance on the theme of African Renaissance, looking towards the creation of the United States of Africa in 2017, as declared by the African Union.
While in Senegal, the delegation will meet privately with President Wade and participate in myriad Festival activities, including attending concerts by Rihanna, Jay-Z, Angelique Kidjo, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal; a soccer match between Senegal and Brazil; a visit to Gorée Island, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in commemoration of the painful history of the Atlantic slave trade; and participation in the Forum on African Renaissance.

Well that is a more solid explanation! But I don't believe Senegal have the biggest forest in the world and not even the oldest. Even Congo forest is bigger than your entire country, so how can that be?

Hadrami June 25th, 2011, 01:08 PM Senegal’s Saloum Delta listed among UNESCO’s world heritage sites
June 24, 2011
APA- Dakar (Senegal) The World Heritage Committee has inscribed Senegal’s Saloum Delta and its vestiges dating back more than two millennia on UNESCO’s world heritage list, APA can confirm on Friday.
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/SENEGAL/FR_bateaux.jpg
Fishing and shellfish gathering have sustained human life in the 5,000km property, which straddles three rivers.
The site comprises saline vegetation encompassing over 200 islands and islets, mangrove forests, an Atlantic marine environment, and dry forests.
It is marked by 218 shellfish mounds, some of them several hundred metres long, produced by its human inhabitants over the ages.
Burial sites on 28 of the mounds are fashioned like tumuli where remarkable artefacts have been found.
These sites are thought to be important for our understanding of cultures from the various periods of the Delta’s occupation and give testimony to the history of human settlements along the coast of West Africa.

Hadrami June 25th, 2011, 01:18 PM From Pampered to Primordial: A Delta Journey
by Lydia Polgreen, West Africa bureau chief for The New York Times.
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/SENEGAL/next-pool-600.jpg
I was in the Sine Saloum Delta, a glorious melding of river, earth and sea just north of Senegal’s border with the Gambia, where a handful of hotels have sprung up in the last five years, drawing a new set of travelers.
West Africa has for decades been the province of backpackers — the place to go for life-altering journeys filled with $2-a-night hotels, interminable, jouncing journeys in the back of bush taxis on rutted back roads and gorp for lunch and mystery meat stew for dinner. I made many such journeys myself as a high school student living in Ghana in the early 1990s. But the big-money tourists went east or south for the big game safaris and the luxury resorts on the Indian Ocean and the Cape.
But in West Africa today, in places like Ghana, Benin, Mali and especially Senegal, travelers are searching for the other Africa — more Wole Soyinka and Léopold Senghor than Isak Dinesen and Ernest Hemingway — are finding new and surprisingly sumptuous options.
The Sine Saloum Delta region of Senegal is perhaps the best embodiment of the trend, mostly around the town of Palmarin, a collection villages on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Saloum River. On a recent trip to the delta, my partner, Candace Feit, and I spent a few days comparing two very different but quite luxurious lodges that have sprouted between the river and the sea and plying the mangrove-lined tributaries in massive wooden boats, spotting birds and eating oysters plucked straight from the brackish water.
Our first stop, the Royal Lodge, was a spare-no-expense collection of sprawling suites in thatch-roof bungalows beside a broad beach. The cavernous suites were divided into three spaces of equal gigantitude: a sitting room, bedroom and a showstopper bathroom, complete with a whirlpool tub that looked big enough for a family of four.
With its infinity pool, swim-up bar and oceanfront location, the Royal Lodge is a state-of-the-art beach resort, but few people come here for the beaches, which are nice enough, but nothing compared with the breathtaking scenery. The delta is a place of ethereal beauty: the still, snaking branches of mangrove-lined tributaries, thick with herons, ibises and pelicans; the eerie stands of baobab trees, those mighty symbols of Africa with their gnarled, finger-like branches; the spongy expanses of marshy earth crisscrossed by the pitchfork feet of a million birds.
With that in mind, we hired a horse-drawn cart and a guide named Simon Mbissane Ndiaye through the hotel to take us on a ride through the countryside to a pirogue, a type of wide, colorful fishing boat used all over Senegal, for a cruise. Our cart quickly veered off the main road and into the Palmarin nature preserve, a vast and rich tapestry of plants and animals.

WHERE TO STAY AND EAT
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/SENEGAL/FR_entr_e.jpg
Lodge des Collines de Niassam (Palmarin, 221-669-63-43; www.niassam.com), with its stunning location, tone of earthy luxury, natural materials and emphasis on low environmental impact, has become a popular destination. The treehouse rooms have an unmistakable fantasy appeal, but the three-story configuration may put off some visitors. Rooms are 87 euros a person — about $117, at $1.34 to the euro — which includes breakfast on your terrace and a sumptuous three-course dinner, usually local seafood, cooked with herbs grown in the lodge’s garden. (The euro is commonly accepted instead of the local currency, the Communauté Financière Africaine franc.)
Royal Lodge (Palmarin, 221-957-60-00; www.le-royal-lodge.com) has sprawling, opulently outfitted bungalows along a lovely stretch of beach starting at 250 euros a night for two adults. That includes an excellent buffet breakfast and a huge three-course dinner. Oceanfront bungalows, with their oversize whirlpool tubs that look out on the sea, cost an extra 61 euros a night.
WHAT TO DO
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/SENEGAL/FR_bateaux.jpg
Boat trips, bush hikes and aerial tours can be arranged, and it is best to do so with the hotels, which have the most knowledgeable guides. A half-day pirogue tour through the mangroves, including a guide, visits to several islands and stops at river and sea beaches for swimming, runs about 75 euros, not including tip. If you want to see birds, early morning and early evening are the best times to visit the mangroves. To see the spectacular scenery from above, there is an ultra-light aircraft, operated by a local resident, available for about 40 euros for a 15-minute flight. Fishing and catamaran trips can also be arranged through either hotel.
HOW TO GET THERE
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/SENEGAL/dakar-offer-2.jpg
There are flights from New York to Dakar on South African Airways, as well as from Washington.
Delta flies from Atlanta. Fares start at about $1,700.
Palmarin is a four-hour drive from Dakar on well-paved roads. You can haggle on arrival with a taxi driver, but the best bet is to organize transportation through the hotels, which charge about 60 euros each way for a maximum of four passengers.

Agree with you. Those pictures are great, nice nature and thats what tourists want.
I've visited Senegal twice and its realy a nice country.
And for tourists very important that its a stable country with a currency fixed to Euro.
But I'm affraid for troubles next year with the elections.
Also no police and soldiers (as in some other African countries) who stop you every 500 meter for bribing.
But big forest? Hmm, I don't follow you for that.
I think the oldest forest in Africa is Korup National Park in Cameroon, the biggest is certainly in Congo.

Senegal is currently the West African country with the ‘larger number of UNESCO World Heritage sites’ (6), Hamadu Bocoum , the director of the National Heritage said on Friday evening in Toubacouta, a town located in the central-western region of Fatick.
Bocoum was attending the laying of the commemorative plate symbolizing the engraving of the Saloum Delta as new site of UNESCO World Heritage.
“The inscription of the Saloum Delta as a World Heritage site is an indication that we are now part of the 911 sites inscribed by UNESCO on the list of World Heritage sites.
It means at this moment, Senegal is the leading country in West African with the greater number of UNESCO World Heritage sites,” he said.
The Aloum Delta, which covers 500,000 hectares of swamps is composed of mangroves, shellfish and of islands covered with funeral mounds.
In Senegal, the Director of the National Heritage said, the World Heritage sites include the Goree Island, the Bird sanctuary of Djoudj situated in the Senegal River Delta (northern region of Saint-Louis), and the Niokolo Koba National Park in the south-eastern region of Tambacounda, the city of Saint-Louis itself, the megaliths of the Saloum.
For his part, Christian Ndombi, Cultural Advisor at UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Africa (BREDA), called for the protection, conservation and promotion of this site.
The Saloum Delta is now inscribed as a World Heritage site and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve it, but above this, we should ensure its promotion,” he said.

Hadrami September 29th, 2011, 09:11 PM Senegal: Travelogue - It's Good to Be in Senegal, But...
29 September 2011
http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/_39615333_senegal_cp_map203.gif
Dakar — At last I am in Dakar, Senegal, one of Africa's finest countries. It has always been my dream to visit this part of the African continent and I am happy that God almighty has made it a reality for me. Senegal, I believe, is a country that everyone, including myself, will wish to visit and so when my editor, Moses A. Kargbo, informed me that he had sent my name to attend a training in Senegal organized by the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission in collaboration with the West African Regional Fisheries Program, I said to myself: "Thank God, my dream has finally come true". From that moment, I started celebrating as if it is the first time I'll be traveling out of Sierra Leone. I went ahead informing my parents, wife-to-be and friends of my travelling to Dakar. As a young aspiring journalist, this is my third time travelling out of Sierra Leone.
Moreover, during the week of my travel, all my thinking was Senegal.
We prayed all the way to Dakar and, indeed, Allah answered our prayers as we landed safely at the Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport. I headed straight to the immigration officials to complete my immigration formalities.
Honestly, Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport is first class by every standard. The facilities at the airport are fantastic. The immigration department and other offices are well organized and everything seems to be orderly. After some rigorous questioning by the immigration officers, myself and my travelling (senior) colleague, John Pa Baimba Sesay, boarded a waiting vehicle for Ocean Hotel, where we are being accommodated for the rest of the training.
What I found very strange upon my arrival at the hotel was the fact that all the hotel attendants that received us could only speak French. Yes Senegal is a French-speaking West African country but hotel workers should have at least a little bit of knowledge in other international languages, especially English. They found my conversation with them very strange. What I've learnt from this is that to have a successful stay in Dakar and to make life very comfortable for yourself, you must first have an understanding of some basic French; otherwise you are seen as a clown.
Dakar is a very clean city compared to my (charming?) city, Freetown. You hardly see police officers, not to talk of military personnel, on the street. Don't ask me about what obtains in my native Sierra Leone. There is so much more my country will learn from Senegal, especially in the area of good infrastructure: roads, massive buildings, among others.
For now, I'll rest my case to prepare myself well for the three-day intensive training on fisheries management, which starts today (Tuesday) at Hotel Savana Saly in Mbour, some 80 kilometers off Dakar.
To be continued ...
