A Rate our Talls thread was opened and was successful (thank Dennis, he actually started the thread, not me.) I want to open a Rate our Skylines thread to see how it goes. Post pictures of skylines of any African city over 150,000. Make sure there are at least 10 -15 posts between each skyline post.

Please Note: Not all African cities are bursting with supertalls, so please keep these factors in mind when voting.
-Look at the Architecture
-Look at the Natural Setting
-Look at the city's orginization and infrastructure

I'll start with Freetown, Sierra Leone since no forumers represent this city.

Capetown has developed a cbd so fast...Y is Abuja cbd development so stagnant and snail paced...gosh I'm starting to think those involved in Nigerian cities development has snail paced minds included the FCT minister...

Abuja only recently decided to develop its CBD. There was a height restriction in the past. The reason why Abuja tends to develop a little bit slower is because Abuja is not in a State, it is in a Federal Territory; so their projects tend to be more susceptible to fiscal scrutiny. There is more red tape and more secrecy in Abuja.

But the actual plans and development is there in place. The Abuja Boulevard development is a concrete development that already has the investor in place. The WTC project actually has buildings planned that would rank as some of the highest in Africa (Top 5 - Top 120) and they are under construction.

The investor behind the WTC is actually a proven company that already has a track record of building high/mid rises in Lagos Abuja. They built the Churchgate towers in Abuja and Lagos etc, so yes things are slow but the progress is occurring.

Aye Tbite no more excuses. Abuja should've kicked Cape Town to the ground in development if Nigeria was wise with it's oil money.

Resources is not money. South Africa has more money than Nigeria in absolute terms and per capita. Resources can create money...with value and expansion and investment etc. South Africa has more money than Nigeria in every possible way, they are probably even more resource rich.

Abuja is a Federal State built from scratch, the Federal Government is probably looking at what? 15-20% of Nigeria's actual oil wealth!

Nigeria's Federal Government does not control up to half of Nigeria's oil. Multinationals such as Shell, Chevron etc earn more money from Nigeria's oil than the Federal Government does.

We are currently working on a Tall Buildings Policy in Cape Town. It is a collaborative effort with the City of Cape Town, Province of the Western Cape, WC Economic Development Partnership, Cape Town Partnership, FutureCape etc. Soon, Cape Town should see more tall buildings going up, we're running out of space and must go up. Portside (150m tall) currently under-construction is more than likely, just the beginning.

@ Tbite...Musiccity and the others are actually right...Those in charge of Nigerian development just talk and talk portraying a fantasy of what they would do but don't actually do Sh*t...I'm starting to think Nigerian men talk to much with no action,I presume the women would most probably do better if in charge...lol...besides take a look at the freaking millenium tower in Abuja along with the cultural center which is not even a supertall is taking generations to build...The millenium tower with that height can be built here in SK in like a year if everything is in place (finances)... That's y I'm so happy that us not government that is handling the Eko atlantic dev but the private sector or else it wouldn't see the light of day...Development in the time and period means speed, time is money and very essential, every country is trying to catch up to the developed world so I know Nigerian politicians and developers travel and can see what is being done in SA and other parts if the world...Take GPH city development for example, they r saying it would take 50 yrs to finalize...like wft, the infrastructure from the renders is not even all that is low-mid rise and a few talls which if they wanted to, they could do in 10 years....so great minds just don't talk about their ideas they put it into tangible product, while minds with no vision just imagine and think little of what they can do...Funny enough the rivers state gov is in partnership with SA for the dev of GPHC and those SA developers are deceiving the small minded rivers state gov making them believe that what can be done in 10 years would take 50 f'n years....

You guys realize I was actually explaining to you guys what was happening in Abuja rather than providing excuses (And what I said...is actually what is happening).

There is more to building than construction....there is litigation, there are financial issues etc. Nigeria is actually not swimming in money and we have probably one of the smallest budgets in the world per capita....so there is a lot of scrutiny and buildings in Nigerian traditionally pan out.

I know this first hand. Nigerians do not use mortagages for example for the most part and they build their houses brick by brick - so this is really something that synoblizes the greater construction industry - Where things are built brick by brick - block by block.

Nigeria is not swimming in anything right now. What we need critically is to expand infrastructure - reduce costs of materials, electricity, transportation etc. Increased efficiency then building becomes more fast paced.

You cannot have a high rise boom in Nigeria right now for example - it is impossible. The infrastructure cannot support it. Construction consumes a lot of energy! Nigeria has a energy capita lesser than the African average.

Eko Atlantic City for example is outside of the picture. They have highlighted investors and they have built their own framework and are building their own infrastructure. This is quite integral and is quite different from a very organic boom which one would anticipate and really cannot be supported at this time. Abuja and Lagos are susceptible to these issues and in terms of public works - it then becomes an issue of fiscal scrutiny etc.

Millennium Towers in Abuja is not being built slowly, construction has actually halted and started and halted and started again. That has nothing to do with construction or the vision. That is financial scrutiny.

I do not work with the Nigerian Government. I have nothing to do with the Nigerian economy. I am shedding light. You can contact the Nigerian Government and voice your concerns.

Before Big Bob messed Zimbabwe up, Nigeria was no match to Zimbabwe, intact Zimbabwe was on the same level with SA in the mid 90s, the great skyline you see is just a manifest of the former glory. Infact looking at the quality of infrastructure in second order cities in Zimbabwe like Bulawayo and Gweru would make you ashamed of your country.

With Nigeria and many other African countries, it is a matter of 'if shit had not happened, we would be there' but with Zimbabwe, it is more of 'we were there until shit happened'. you get that? yeah, Zimbabwe was there and though they are no longer there, whatever was built when they were there is still standing making there cities look more modern than Nigeria's (and indeed most of Africa's) who have never been there because they were messed up before they arrived.

It is a shocker to see Zimbabwe, a country with %100 inflation and 50 100 times poorer than having a City whose skyline makes Lagos look like a favela. Im truely stinned>

Harare was already a modern city when Victoria Island was a swamp,Abuja a game reserve and Lagos a colonial out post. For now,Southern African cities will remain prettier than West African cities cos (painfully tho;) their European settlers gave these cities a head start in terms of planning and all,cos they intended to settle. Most West African cities were products of trial and error,no real planning. Abuja on the other hand (tho slow) is worthy of commendation. Actual construction of Abuja started in the 1980s.

That said,New york is not the pretties city in America, but its the greatest.
Skylines is not really a criteria to determine how buoyant a country or city is.

^^^ i love my city and i rate it 10/10 in five -6 years we are gonna have a new transformed skyline.

Kinda disappointed that not more cities were posted here well i might as well change that.

Its good to be patriotic but south African cities beats us hands down
